Taylor This is a fair enough tract small tract of 76 pages(dead tree) but it is mostly of historical interest. It is a social essay not a sex manual but it is not self-righteous or overbearing in tone and the author comes out as pleasant in tone if somewhat overidealistic. It often deals with problems that have simply changed their emphasis as time went by. While sex and problems related to it will always be with us, the way we react changes, and I suspect no generation gets it right; she would certainly be as opposed to modern looseness as she was to post-victorian uptightness. The writer was in her time a noted feminist, which is to say a 1920's feminist, not a 2010 feminist. She however was not an ideologue like those who get wrapped up in political causes so often are and in fact is noted for her mercy and forbearance for everyone's point of view. She doesn't have the painful air of shrillness that make all moral questions into a tribal vendetta in the way all factions concerned sometimes treat them today. What is interesting, is that though some of her concerns are dated in the since of being directed at the troubles of her time rather then ours a surprising number are remarkably similar. And the same arguments that were used then were often rehashed. More gently to be sure, but one can recognize them. Her urging of mercy on those who don't succeed in moral rectitude is noted. In some ways she is to idealistic; her demands for love in marriage are well taken but she fails to take account of how so often in history spouses normally never met each other before the ceremony(though she does touch lightly on the "mail order" solution to population disproportion). To say that marriage "with no love" is "not a real marriage" as she almost seems to do, seems to me to be an overhigh standard, and a rather unintentionally cruel one. The author does give a plea for the state of single women which I can identify with being an involuntary celebate male myself. I would disagree with her opinion on no-fault divorce both because I think you simply have to live with the promises you make, and because I come of a generation that has had to live with the consequences of the policy.I can't agree with all her solutions. Partly this is of course, because I am not quite sure what she is proposing. But insofar as I can understand her I can see problems from hindsight. Be that as it may, I think the greatest benefit from reading this comes from perspective. It is less easy to get upset when one realizes that our ancestors dealt with many of the same difficulties, had the same arguments, and frankly they messed it all up too. They just messed it up in different ways-but not so different that one cannot recognize things. The past may be a foreign country but in some ways it is not that foreign. One can see from this that our descendants will mess things up as well and their descendants will too. It is a decent relaxant to know this and it drains worry and factional anger away. For this reason, this tract is worth reading.

Therefore some of the debates, like the divorce referendum seem to the modern reader to be irrelevant. Yet after just a little thought it shows to still be interesting as these were the issues of the day. What will people think of the same sex marriage bill in 90 years time? What would the Royden have thought of it? Although I would consider this to be a book to read for historical value, I still found aspects of it to be challenging today. After all, is it right that values change with time? And should we be looking to the authors of our past for guidance on today's issues of sexuality? What I liked about it was Royden's unbiased perspective. Granted she was a woman writing in her time, yet she seemed to me to be fair to both men and women in a manner that contemporary feminists sometimes lack. She wrote in a balanced manner and invited the reader to think rather than writing for a cause. I couldn't help but like Royden herself. Her personality shone through the pages as a caring and extraordinary sharp writer. The fact that she was a women writing in the 1920's did not seem to bother her. She must have met resistance being a Woman writing in a man's world, writing so openly about sex and sexuality. But you would never have guessed that any such issues were present going from her writings. What I didn't like about the book can all be put down to Royden being a product of her time. Some of her ideas are not up to modern scrutiny, but if the reader keeps in mind when she is writing there is nothing not to like. She has a better understanding of the human condition than even Freud. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the social sciences, especially those involved in psychology, sociology and ethics. This is also a good book for any Historians.

Christine Jenkins is a high school math teacher who has never heard of Kinyarwanda or Kigali. Sonia and Eugene are Rwandan teenagers who have just set foot on American soil. Assuming they need a parent, social worker, and miracle maker, Christine enters their lives with naïve notions of how their relationship will unfold. Her attempts to overcome cultural barriers come in the form of awkward conversations, forced smiles, material gifts – and lasagna. Lots of lasagna. A series of life-changing events throws Christine’s plans off course, destroying her sense of security and control. As she slowly discovers what matters most, Eugene and Sonia gift her with lessons of faith, love, and resilience. Based on actual events, Fake Smiles and Lasagna is a tale of the transformative power of unlikely friendships – and how to find joy in unexpected places.

Heartfelt and Personal Story By klavierstucke The title of this book, “Fake Smiles and Lasagna” intrigued me, and was probably the initial impetus to read it. I’m glad I did, as I learned a great deal about the difficulties refugees face adjusting to new lives in a strange country, all the while carrying around momentous emotional baggage from their (often) war-torn homelands. But I also learned a lot about the ups and downs of volunteerism, of finding the “right fit,” and the great responsibility that comes along with committing to being a volunteer.“Fake Smiles and Lasagna” also left up to interpretation as to who the true protagonist was; at times it was the author/narrator, at other times it was one of the other main characters. In the end, I found myself consistently rooting for Ms. Jenkins, who time and time again had to deal with both the everyday stresses of life, juggling career, family and now extended family, as well as coming to terms with more than her share of emotional hardships throughout her life. She is never “preachy;” she just tells her sometimes complicated, self-deprecating, funny story and lets the reader take it from there. One of things that I enjoyed most about reading this book was that I felt a lot of anticipation in wanting to know what would happen next. This was because Ms. Jenkins very cleverly and consistently intertwined her personal story with that of the Rwandan refugees she was becoming friends with. There were times where these stories overlapped, and times where they didn’t - and all for sound reasons. One chapter would talk about an activity the family had with the Rwandan refugees – something as simple as bowling, or going to the Olive Garden, but Ms. Jenkins adds the details necessary to understand that even every day activities like these take on great weight given the circumstances. Next would be a chapter that contained childhood memories on Cape Cod; also somewhat commonplace in the abstract, but again, Ms. Jenkins use of recurring symbols, such as crossing over the Sagamore Bridge onto Cape Cod, and the dissolution of stress all adds resonance and depth to even lighthearted passages. Particularly touching for me were two story lines in the book; one, where Ms. Jenkins gains the trust of the elusive and bottled-up Eugene, and the other, where through the course of multiple chapters she deals with her mother’s cancer diagnosis and outcome.“Fake Smiles and Lasagna” is filled with humorous family anecdotes, often describing personality quirks that we can all relate to. It also contains a great deal of sadness, something not always easy to write or read about, but Ms. Jenkins does so without pretense or melodrama, and the end result is a sincere and heartfelt memoir about self-acceptance, family and friendship.

When Chris and her husband--together with their two daughters-- decide to support two newly-arrived Rwandan refugees, they couldn't know the ways that Sonia and Eugene would challenge but also enrich their lives. But this is more than a tale of the way a family expands by welcoming others into it; the novel explores the loss of beloved parents on both continents, the growth of teenaged daughters born to the author as well as those "adopted," and an evolution to "African time"--and with it, a lessening of structures and opening of hearts. Whether it's explaining bowling, body surfing, and sledding, or learning how to negotiate the vagaries of food stamps and English language acquisition, Chris shares her stories with an honesty and humor that make a reader feel as though she's sitting alongside a dear friend--waiting, always, for the next detail or anecdote. Spanning graduations, deaths, and childbirth, the book chronicles the moments in which we become a family and discover ourselves. Readers' smiles will be anything but fake as they laugh, empathize, and care for the gloriously flawed but wonderfully real families of this immensely readable first book. I'm already eager for the sequel.

Burtt My first thought after reading Fake Smiles and Lasagna was that I wanted to drive to Cape Cod and spend a long weekend talking with Christine.Chris describes the book as a journey of self-discovery. While reading it I found myself wondering what I would find if I too went on such a journey. I realized while reading this book that you can’t really know a person, maybe even yourself, unless you open yourself up to scrutiny , overcome self-doubt and “open yourself up to new possibilities”. I was engaged from page one. I love the way Chris begins each chapter with a quote from Eugene or Sonia. I had to keep reading to explore what the quote would lead to.My new mantra after reading Fake Smiles and Lasagna is “everything is going to be OK.”

Howell Not since Elmer Kelton have I enjoyed a western author as much as I enjoyed Patrick Dearen's storytelling in his recent novel, The Big Drift. For a native West Texan, reading it was like enjoying a double scoop of ice cream with a cherry on top. Not only are Dearen's characters gritty and believable, they are also forged, it seems, from real cowboys. I highly recommend this book. It's a delight for historical fiction and western fans alike.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Big Drift: an excellent read! By ozonagardener The Big Drift depicted a long-gone era of ranching history in Southwest Texas. Because my family lives near the affected areas mentioned in the book, it was of great interest. I believe that Patrick Dearen's work is well researched and written and would be much appreciated by people with ties to the area or to those who want to learn the history of ranching and how it developed and changed. The interesting characters in the novel came alive on the page. I think our parents and grandparents would have found Dearen's work quite an accurate depiction of the times of which he wrote.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Worthy of the Spur Award it Won By Jane A. Kirkpatrick Based on true events, The Big Drift takes us to Texas in the 1880s and the experiences of cowboys dealing not only with a weather phenomenon but with coming to terms with their own earlier choices. Full of western authenticity and the larger themes of forgiveness and living with regret, this novel won the Spur Award from Western Writers of America in the Traditional Western category. It is a well-deserved award. This is the first book of Mr. Dearen that I've read. He's written many and I'll look for more!

From the Upper Room of Pentecost to Azusa Street in Los Angeles, God has used prayer movements throughout history to change the world. Over fifteen years ago, a group of students gathered for a prayer vigil in Chichester, England—and the prayers they started haven’t stopped. Out of that first meeting came 24-7 Prayer: an international movement of prayer, mission, and justice that has reached Chinese underground churches, Indian slums, Papua New Guinea jungles, ancient English cathedrals, and even a brewery in Missouri.Red Moon Rising is the story of how that movement continues today—and how each of us can be a part of the miracles God is doing through a new generation.

For over 20 years remote viewers have been hearing about the imminent arrival of global destruction through the "kill shot," a burst of solar radiation that causes massive destruction. One group of remote viewers, however, foresees imminent, regional, deadly destruction that most people will be able to escape, if they are only prepared. This summary of 150 remote viewing sessions paints a picture of non-military destruction in the Middle East and unexpected consequences of global warming not related to "climate," with 10 suggestions of how most readers can weather the crisis.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Very Interesting By No Zombies This short book (really booklet) was very interesting. It talks about catastrophes that remote viewers see coming for the Middle East and the east and west coasts of the United States. As a side note, the viewers see a female president who wears pantsuits in 2016, succeeded by a president named Julian Castro, and then succeeded by Marco Rubio. (I had to Google Julian Castro -- he apparently was the mayor of San Antonio for a long time and is now the Secretary of HUD.) I found those tidbits just as interesting as the main focus of the book, the catastrophes and what will happen after. Are the predictions true? Only time will tell. The authors say that multiple remote viewers see the same events. I'm going to hang on to the book and revisit it in the future -- the timeline is 2017 and out. I'm also going to use some of the authors' suggestions on finding and securing a safe home because, unfortunately, I do find the events plausible.

I wish that they would put out a book every month. Whether or not any of the events manifest is not important. It is just interesting to note that at the time they viewed, certain events seemed likely because of the convergence and trajectory of other events. I am still trying to understand how remote viewing truly works and the events mentioned are in the near future so it will be interesting to note what actually happens!

By Mustang Kat Rose was recently featured in the Vancouver Sun as an up and coming new young author, and she did not disappoint. Building it Up was full of an aftermath of a terrible tragedy between 3 friends. the struggles they all faced and how it left scars that needed time to heal. So full of twists and turns I never saw coming. It had some surprises that were entertaining and kept you guessing how was it going to end. I absolutely enjoyed it and cant wait for her next novel to come out. I Loved it as much as her first novel The Loss. They were both so different, yet she writes with so much emotional weight. Soooooo Good

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Must Read Novel by Briana Cole; You won't be disappointed! By Shalonda Bonds First two words that come to mind after reading this book is NEW FAN! This book kept me engaged throughout. I am an avid reader and have a few authors that I would purchase their novel without knowing the storyline. I am so impressed by the well thought-out plot and developed characters, that I would do the same with any novel written by Briana Cole. Unlike a lot stories, the actions of the characters kept me in suspense and unable to guess what the next move would be. The story was filled with just enough erotica to satisfy the "adult" in me without it seeming like a poorly written porno translated into book form. This book was so well written that it pulled me into their world and the characters became people that I knew, pitied and disliked. Although a new author, I would definitely place this book among the Zane's, Cairo's and Allison Hobbs. I am just a down to earth person who loves to read and this book gave me a brief escape from reality. The only critique I have is - why didn't you immediately release a sequel so that I can continue my descent into the maddening world of Jayla?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Freaking Awesome-ness!!! By Carrie Where do I begin? This book is everything and more. The author did such an amazing job developing her characters, even after finishing the book there is still so much more to learn about the main character as well as other characters. From beginning to end there was never a moment I was bored reading this book. Mind-blowing plot twists had me saying out loud "Oh no she didn't!!". With a mixture of suspense, comedic relief as well enough hot and steamy scenes, this book does not disappoint and you will not be able to put it down! I literally had a movie playing in my head as I was reading due to the thought and details that Briana Cole incorporated in her book. I really encourage everyone to go out and purchase this book, I promise you will love it. I am currently waiting on PART 2. Great Job Briana Cole, I look forward to many more great reads from you.

It took me one day and an extra two hours to get through it because I binge-read, not wanting to put it down. You don't know what to expect or what will happen next. The main character is so heavily developed but yet a mystery at the same time. There are so many layers to her. The different events taking place- one after another- never leaves a dull moment. It makes the climax so fast paced and thrilling; you're constantly experiencing the ride with her, as it all unfolds. One moment you're happy, the next you are: nervous, anxious, sad, disgusted, disappointed, confused- possibly all at the same time. Even when you have "successfully" figured it out, Cole has something else up her sleeve! It's Hot! It's sizzling! It's sexy! It's CRAZY drama you couldn't get on a reality show- a great read to kick off the summer!

The Perfect Stranger, by PJ Kavanagh

Review 'To hear the truth so devastatingly and yet so joyfully encountered is rare in an age where autobiography has been flattened by the massed weight of political and public reminiscence. This autobiography, from its beginning to its bitter end, is a celebration of joy: joy in youth, in woman, in male camaraderie, in the struggle of art, in married love.' Times Literary Supplement

About the Author P.J. KAVANAGH was born in England in 1931. Wounded in the Korean war, he later went to Oxford. He has worked as a lecturer, actor, broadcaster and columnist and has written novels, two volumes of autobiography and essays, and edited anthologies. His name is closely associated with the poetry of Ivor Gurney, a seminal edition of whose work he prepared in 1982. Carcanet publish two books of his poems and The Perfect Stranger.

Love's mysteries, that no one can explain By bossa_nova This slim volume recounts the author's young life, and his struggle to find the meaning of existence. When he met Sally, everything became suddenly clear. The author says this is not an autobiography, but the story of a rescue: he talks about himself only to explain what he was rescued from. He tries to express something which cannot be expressed directly, but only as if 'to be seen out of the corner of the eye'. So the reader may be disappointed that he says so little about his great love. The book ends abruptly with Sally's early and sudden death. It is good to have evidence that perfect love and perfect happiness are possible on this earth, though given to very few.You can read more about Sally in Rosamond Lehemann's 'The Swan in the Evening'.

Winner of the prestigious Prix Goncourt award for biography, this remarkable portrait sheds new light on Virginia Woolf's relationships with her family and friends and how they shaped her work. Virginia Woolf: A Portrait blends recently unearthed documents, key primary sources, and personal interviews with Woolf's relatives and other acquaintances to render in unmatched detail the author's complicated relationship with her husband, Leonard; her father, Leslie Stephen; and her half-sister, Vanessa Bell. Forrester connects these figures to Woolf's mental breakdown while introducing the concept of "Virginia seule," or Virginia alone: an uncommon paragon of female strength and conviction. Forrester's biography inhabits her characters and vivifies their perspective, weaving a colorful, intense drama that forces readers to rethink their understanding of Woolf, her writing, and her world.

Virginia Woolf: A Portrait, by Viviane Forrester

Review

Virginia Woolf was the object of considerable mystery. Viviane Forrester not only tells us about this mystery but clarifies it. At the beginning, the biographer announces that she will shatter equivocal and false portraits. She does precisely that. The result marks a decisive break in the knowledge we thought we had of this English writer. Forrester crosses the threshold of truth. Without reproving those who wrote before her, knowing what was said and how, Forrester provides a staggering analysis of the youth, marriage, work, and world of Woolf. She tracks, close up, the internal defense mechanisms and means of protection that veil the truth. In a style as poetic as the novelist/poetess deserves, Forrester throws light on the life and the death, Woolf's two tragedies, and reveals the price of her scintillating work.

(Alice Ferney Le Figaro)

Over the years, Viviane Forrester has read and annotated all the journals of Woolf, the five volumes of her correspondence, including, among other things, the letters from her father, Leslie Stephen, and those from her sister, Vanessa Bell, whom Virginia idolized and envied her entire life. Such a considerable quantity of fragments of a vast, complex mosaic, assembled here by the biographer, provides a new vision of Woolf. We discover her close up, fleeing, uncatchable, by turn fragile, ferocious, resplendent, or perverse.... In a lively and limpid style, Forrester attacks first the myths that have calcified around Woolf. First among them, that of her 'madness.' Under the sharp pen of Forrester, therefore, Virginia is not mad, nor is she a martyr.

(Lila Azam Zanganeh LE MONDE)

An engrossing, intimate, and deeply empathetic portrayal of a brilliant and enigmatic woman.

(Kirkus Reviews)

Nimbly moving from one fragmentary impression to another, Forrester challenges the idea (proposed by Woolf's nephew, Quentin Bell, in his biography of her) that Woolf was afflicted with mental illness and suicidal impulses when she was a teenager. Instead, Forrester offers the portrait of a woman who strove to strip away any illusions and capture the rhythms of reality in her writings.

(Publishers Weekly)

Intriguing.... Illuminating.... Readers interested in Virginia Woolf, the Bloomsbury circle, and early twentieth-century modernist writers will require this biography.

(Library Journal)

[A] brilliant, provocative biography.

(Jocelyn McClurg USA Today)

[Virginia Woolf: A Portrait] offers unexpected insights and useful challenges to settled ideas about Woolf, her friendships, her marriage, and her imagination.

(Anne Fernald Open Letters Monthly)

A provocative portrait, richly woven with Woolf's distinctive voice and Forrester's faithful echo.

(Maureen McCarthy Star Tribune)

Review

With psychological subtlety, critical sophistication, and the novelist's art, Viviane Forrester's intimate family biography portrays the suffering, creating Virginia Woolf as a writer of genius and a woman of great personal strength and courage. Forrester's page-turner of a narrative tracks Woolf's richly documented life as it unfolds within a complex web of relationships, re-created in new depth and meaning by Forrester's vivid, lyrical, beautifully translated prose. A provocative and very welcome contribution to our understanding of Woolf's life and work.

(Christine Froula, author of Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Avant-Garde)

Woodbury As an advid fan of the romance genre, and having read over 270+ romance books I can honestly say you learn the writing skills of many authors. These four, which I have read all of their published work, still remain as some of the best writers in their field. Even in an anthology, which are short stories at that, they still maintain to hold your interest. Well, Rochelle, Donna, Francis and Felicia, you did it once again, came back after Rosie's Curl and Weaves to give us another winner. Congratulations to all of you!All four stories were outstanding: Donna Hill who presents us with a story about the owner and the tax man..WOW I enjoyed this one. The plot itself, about the taxes, well that is a story that leaves you wondering about the IRS? Read it and when you finish you'll see what I mean.Francis Ray - well, I loved it! For those who read Francis's story in Rosie, you'll see some folks you remember from before. The story ended making me wonder, is Shelton next?Rochelle Alers - this author put me on notice it had to do with a widow and being one myself, this was my favorite story. I truly loved the development of the relationship between Maria and Cameron. The story touched me as it was eloquently done so well. Thanks Rochelle!Felicia Mason - Enjoyed this one likewise, and the message it offers to us. You defintely have no control over who you fall in love with and in this case the story was done so well showing us.Well ladies, we look forward to many more anthologies by all of you! Thanks again for Della's House of Style.

Young Four very talented and well know authors come to us again in the follow-up to Rosie's Curl & Weave.Della's House of Style was a great treat. The four stories were well written.Donna Hill's It Could Happen to You was excellent. I really liked Della finding a Love of Her Own. I was glad to see a soft side to the hero in this story. Della just seemed to bring out the best in him. Ms. Hill is a thorough writer and gave us a wonderful story.Francis Ray's story A Matter of Trust was warm and very sincere. I liked the characters of Hope and Sebastian. Hope's son and landlord really rounded out the story.Rochelle Alers' story Sweet Surrender was touching. Maria Parker a very young widow was afraid to love. She meets Mr. Cameron King, a man that looks tough on the outside, but is a sweet person once you get to know him.Felicia Mason's story Truly, Honestly was great also. I think it shows you don't always choose who you fall in love with, sometimes it just happens. No matter where you come from and what you do in life, love should be the most important. Each story held its own, but together they made a wonderful novel all surrounding Della's House of Style. Great job ladies!

The pages were littered with wordy, unrealistic dialogue woven throughout ridiculous fairy-tale plots. The concept behind Della's was, in fact, clever: four stories about four women looking for love in the same beauty salon. However, the substance that authors Rochelle Alers, Donna Hill, Felicia Mason and Francis Ray offer up fell way short of my expectations. Each story depicted weak, 'damsel-in-distress' female characters falling for the generic tall, dark and handsome male. Alers' Cameron King and Ray's Sebastian Stone could be easily interchanged between their respective stories. Both men are gorgeous, rich and powerful, but bland. The only exception to this being author Felicia Mason's male character, Daryl Desmond, an average looking, 'round-the-way bus driver. What weakens Della's House of Style even further is the lack of consistency among the authors' tales. While the title character, Della Frazier, appears in all four stories, the supporting characters vary from story to story. Most appalling was the reincarnation of the stereotypical gay male stylist as Reggie in Hill's "It Could Happen To You," Antoine in Ray's "A Matter of Trust," and Maurice in Alers' "Sweet Surrender."Della's does succeed in providing avid readers and aspiring fiction/romance writers with an example of poorly written African-American romance. I would recommend this book to any instructor of writing or African-American literature who seeks to school students on the absolute "don'ts" of writing romance. However, if you're looking for an empty-calorie romantic thrill, along the lines of a cheap screw-top bottle of wine, pick up Della's House of Style.
