Back then I was so angry and frustrated that she wouldn’t talk to me or do something as simple as sending a text.Looking back now I realized that those actions were actually the reason that we got back together and I have grown to not just love her more but also appreciate her. This book will help any girl out there who is having a hard time getting her partner back. You will be surprised how your relationship will evolve if you applied the no contact rule.

Very Insightful By Amazon Customer While the advice in this book will not work 100% of the time (nor does it promises to) it offers insightful and practical advice to rekindle a relationship that has ended for a variety of reasons. The No Contact rule is simple but gives both parties a chance to step back and think about what went wrong and what is still right about the relationship. More importantly, it gives your ex the opportunity to miss you. Not all relationships are worth saving, but if you think yours is, this book has some sage advice.

Breaking up is hard to do, and this book really helps to keep your head straight. It's not anything innovative- it's just the way all the information is gathered into one place, all the wisdom. We all know what we SHOULD do, but sometimes we're not sure what is the right move. This book really helps to sort things out. It's also a good read if you want to know how to improve your relationships in the future.

In The Whole Five Feet, Christopher Beha turns to the great books for answers after undergoing a series of personal and family crises and learning that his grandmother had used the Harvard Classics to educate herself during the Great Depression. The result is a smart, big-hearted, and inspirational mix of memoir and intellectual excursion that "deftly illustrates how books can save one's life" (Helen Schulman).

By Odysseus In an era when the race to develop technology and standardized testing have changed the nature of education, reading The Whole Five Feet reminds us why a liberal arts education is important for everyone. Beha, as a cancer survivor, is no ludite, he knows that we must progress in the sciences as well, but all of us will be, as Beha finds himself, more thoughtful people for spending some time with the great books.Ironically, though Beha is well educated, he finds that he needs the Classics as much as the intended working class audience of 100 years ago. Sadly, many of us who are educated were exposed to the great books when we did not have enough life experience to understand them. I hope that The Whole Five Feet will inspire many to turn back to the Classics and to use our leisure time to continue our educations, as well as to think hard about how we are educating young people today. The published reviewers miss the point when they complain that Beha's responses to the Classics were not always profound. First of all, they were sometimes profound, which is enough, and secondly they were honest. It is just as important to admit when a great book does not move us, and to examine why it may still be worth reading (or not). Too many of these "I did this in a year" projects come out too neatly to be true.As to the matter of his age, in some areas he has wisdom beyond his years, and in others he relates to books as a young twenty-something. This does not make what he has to say less important -- in fact, we have plenty of places to find out what the grey haired men think about the classics, the very fact of his youth in undertaking this project makes it that much more interesting and should recommend this book to those who teach the classics and work with young people. As a supporter of young artists, I found it fascinating to see how Beha evolves as both a reader and a writer over the course of the year, and to accompany him on this journey. In this way, the book is well edited, because it is clear that the early chapters were not totally re-written to neatly build to the conclusion. This adds to the honesty of the experience, which is almost documentary as much as memoir. While we readers may not have the luxury of quitting our day jobs to embrace the Classics, we can read while we live, we do not (and, he seems to say, perhaps should not) need to leave the world in order to learn from books. Beha is not so much attempting to give us neat answers to our lives as he is giving us a window on his personal search for truth and wisdom, thereby encouraging us to purue our own. In that way, he honors and extends Eliot's original intent with the Classics.

McGee Toward the end of this fascinating story, Christopher Beha admits that it isn't the book he had intended to write -- and all I can say is, thank heavens for that. The plan, he says, was to tell a tale that was "essentially a comedy, about a feckless, somewhat lost young man who shuts himself away from the modern world and its cultural white-noise -- from life as it's lived in his own time and place -- to immerse himself in classic literature." In other words, Beha's book was intended as one in a series of what I somewhat flippantly refer to as 'stunt stories', books revolving around their authors' attempts to perform some feat, such as learning to cook like Julia Child, read all of Proust or live Biblically, typically within an allotted timeframe. (In this case, Beha set out to read all 51 volumes of the Harvard Classics within a year.)It's a cute idea, and if that had been the book that Beha had produced, it wouldn't have been interesting enough to review. Because, frankly, the ideas of a 20-something having something profound to say about a century-old compendium of 'great books' is, well, improbable. But what Beha found instead is that the works included the the 'five foot shelf' of books in the Harvard Classics series produced a series of unexpected lessons and insights. First of all, there were no pat answers or easy insights or epiphanies. Secondly, far from removing himself from the events of his life, the books both helped him make sense of that life and drove him back into the world. "Books draw meaning from life, but they also give meaning in return," he concludes. "These books wouldn't let me lose myself."There were times when Beha would have relished being able to do so. The year that he spent reading the classics -- which starts, oddly, with Benjamin Franklin's autobiography and then ranges from Homer's Odyssey and the Greek dramatists, to Oliver Wendell Holmes's writings on medicine and Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle, with stops along the way for Cervantes and Dante -- was a year marked with personal tragedy and trauma. A beloved aunt, dying of cancer, lives with his family and while he is occupying himself with his reading he is also caring for her and trying to cope with her death. Himself a cancer survivor, Beha then must grapple with his own series of illnesses, including a bout of Lyme disease. These all trigger a lot of existential thought, logically enough, which affects how he digests what it is that he's reading and how he reacts to it.His reading cause Beha to question even the nature of knowledge. People would ask him what he had 'learned' from the books; he was all to aware that an honest answer, that he felt as if he was being initiated into a kind of fraternity, that he was "learning how to be in the world", would only sound pretentious.I disagree with the Publishers Weekly review that Beha's conclusions are 'disappointingly pat'. Rather, they are personal. Anyone else conducting the experiment would have written a very different book; should Beha himself return and repeat the experiment at the age of 50, no doubt he will choose to focus on very different works; less about John Stuart Mill, perhaps, and more on Milton or Moliere. And certainly he'll draw very different conclusions, because his life experiences will be different, just as any of us attempting to write a book may (or may not!) have written something as good, but certainly would have written something that was just as personal. But not all of us would have been as prepared as Beha to let events overtake us and divert us from our well-laid plans. And that is Beha's ultimate triumph; that he allowed himself to be forced by the events of the year and by his reactions to what he read to write this book rather than what would have been a self-conscious and suitably ironic book about the nature of Great Books. Maybe the latter would have had more erudite insights, but it wouldn't have been as honest or as compelling for readers. I would have found it hard to take that book seriously; this one reads like an honest self-evaluation at a pivotal point in a young man's life. No, it may not stand alongside Dana's "Two Years Before the Mast" as worthy of inclusion in a future edition of Harvard Classics, but it's a thoughtful and very well-written rumination on the nature of reading, the importance of books and of a life lived thoughtfully. At a point in time when reality television shows are taking over the airwaves and the kind of attention that's required to peruse this kind of writing seems to be hard to find in our overcrowded, hectic lives, it's a relief to find someone of Beha's age finding value in words written centuries ago.Highly recommended for anyone looking for a well-written and thought-provoking but not overwhelming non-fiction book that can be easily packed and taken along on vacation by those who want something a bit more meaty than the latest thriller or romance. For those with Kindles -- Many of the volumes of the Harvard classics that Beha devoured are also available in Kindle editions for a mere 99 cents, thus making the 51 volumes a very cost-effective proposition indeed. (And rather than five feet of shelf space, they take up only part of your one inch-wide Kindle...)

24 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Touching and accessible -- a must-read for any reader By John Carr The Whole Five Feet is a joy to read, and you don't have to be well-versed in the classics to find immense satisfaction in the story of a guy who took a year to read them. In fact, the fun of this story lies in how deeply personal Beha's story becomes. You wind up realizing that reading is never a passive endeavor -- you always bring yourself into it, and what you get out of it will depend to some degree on what's going on in your life at the time. During his year of reading, Beha suffers profound loss and illness. In his reading he finds not answers but comfort, and the repeated urging of authors within the canon to get out and live life. Again and again, he finds that these great writers are really just people of different cultures and eras who were consumed with the very same questions we all wrestle with today.Beha writes in a smart and accessible style, and he seems more a friend to the texts he discusses than a student of them. He seems, in fact, to be the ideal reader, which happens to make him the ideal writer to capture this experience on the page. This book serves an inspiration, both to go back and read those classics, and also to keep moving forward and live a rich and fulfilling life.

As a young child Peyton didn’t feel that she had the love and security she needed. Suffering from scars endured early on in her life Peyton began seeking those things that she never had. She assured herself that once she found love, she would hold onto it forever and do whatever it took to keep it. Peyton thought she found that in Jace, a handsome younger guy of whom she’d become very fond of. Jace swept her off her feet, and showed her a world full of love and made Peyton feel safe. What Peyton didn’t realize was that there was another side of Jace, one full of abuse, cheating, and disrespect. Even after all of the constant infidelity, and mistreatment, Peyton stuck around trying to save a relationship that seemed to be doomed from the start. Jace is out for self, and treats Peyton’s love like it’s a curse, but will she ever get that much needed wakeup call and leave him in the gutter where he belongs? Or, will she continue to accept the mental and physical abuse he delivers to her mind body and soul daily?

Their relationship was volatile and very intense. I felt emotions like I was the one stuck in the relationship. And to think of all the kids in the middle of it all. Goodness. passion P gave the readers something authentic and real. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Provides a blueprint for becoming a champion, both on and off the field When Dayton Moore arrived in Kansas City in 2006, the Royals hardly resembled a contender. The general manager inherited a major league club that had just one winning season in the previous decade. Moore, a Kansas native who grew up as a Royals fan, implemented a plan to return the franchise to its glory years. Though not without a few bumps in the road, that plan came to fruition in 2014 as the Royals swept through the American League playoffs to take the pennant and returned the World Series to Kansas City. In More Than a Season, Moore shares how his faith and leadership principles guided his rebooting of the Royals. The general manager describes how he built one of baseball's best farm systems and international scouting departments of out nothing. He shares insight on how he persevered through six consecutive losing seasons and the critical response to controversial trades of Zack Greinke and Wil Myers-transactions that ultimately yielded the foundation of a champion. Full of never-before-told stories from inside the Royals organization More Than a Season features a foreword by star outfielder Alex Gordon and an introduction by William F. High, CEO of the National Christian Foundation Heartland.

As a Royals fan it gives a great picture into what goes into building a championship culture in a "small market", and how opposite it is from the instant gratification society we live in. It also struck me how Dayton refused to blame or use the "small market" as an excuse, and overall how his faith helped him to not focus on all the negatives even when the product on the field was not progressing as hoped or even expected. As a businessperson it provides great principles on how to be a part of an organization and build a great team within that structure. And as a father/parent it gives great insight into how important it is to remember our main priorities and to never lose sight of that. This book has inspired me to be a better father and a better teammate. Thanks Dayton and Matt. And Go Royals!

A book about life-not just baseball By doglover one doesn't need to like or even understand baseball to enjoy this book. it is filled with Christian values which he applies to daily living while explaining his philosophy and his "travels" to his current position. an excellent easy read

It isn't just a book about building the Royals (which was a fascinating accomplishment in itself). It is about building a culture of success that is applicable in business, non-profit, church, or really any organization. Moore has a handle on finding good people, setting goals, and building a team that works together for success. In his example, you can see a blueprint for how to lead effectively, remove obstacle, and win. Well done and congratulations on another great year with the championship. Well-deserved.

I just finished this book and highly recommend it. A, C, Arthur is one of my favorite authors. I am always looking for new books from her. These are two good love stories that you will not want to put down until you finish the entire book. I would suggest purchasing the entire Donovan series. You will not regret it. I highly recommend this book.

I actually read this as part of The Donovans Volume II. I just wish I knew the correct reading order so that I could read the novellas in the correct sequence with the stories. Cole being set up by Bree and Lynn was classic sister activity. Reading how Cole fought them the entire way was also classic. I hope all the friends novellas are this good.Embraced By A Donovan : WOW the Miami Donovans are as hot as the Vegas ones!!! But besides that this being the first book that truly begins to delve into the history of the Seniors was great. Parkers role in the previous books left us with many questions. He is the one Donovan we know to have been married and divorced. Strangely his ex-wife worked for him. This book had so much action that I couldn't put it down. I read this work as part of The Donovans Volume II. I am psyched for the next book that tackles the Seniors.

Shows the complex nature of a divorced male working alongside his ex and a model dealing with a body image illness. Liked how they both overcame and family comes together for their children. This book sort of begins the retaliation against the Elder Donovans on a personal basis.Always My Valentine is the Cole Desdune and Loren Knox story. Cole is Bree's brother from "Guarding His Body" and she is married to Lorenzo Bennet of the Bennet family (other books by A. C. Arthur). Glad to see Cole's story written even though his sisters are the ones to bring him back to the person whom he has always loved.

Kissing the Man Next Door, by Devon Vaughn Archer

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Mackenzie Reese decided to do the neighborly thing and introduce herself to the man who had just moved in next door. Never mind the fact that she'd been good friends with the previous occupants and missed them deeply. If not for a job transfer overseas, Joelle and David Schofield would still be living there now. But they weren't anymore and she would just have to deal with it.

Mackenzie wouldn't pass judgment on the new homeowner, at least not until she met him. She'd only gotten a glimpse of the man so far. She estimated he was at least six-four—six inches taller than she. His head was shaved bald and he had a black mustache with just the slightest hint of hair on his chin.

He also had a yellow Labrador, though Mackenzie was not especially fond of dogs these days. There had been too many times when some neighborhood dog had managed to get into her flower garden. Once she'd had the gate to her backyard fixed, there hadn't been any more problems with dogs, and Mackenzie intended to keep it that way.

There was no indication that her new neighbor had a wife or children.

Would he send for them once things were set up? Mackenzie had also noted that his silver BMW had Connecticut license plates.

So what brings him to Cheri Village, Vermont?

She could think of any number of things in this growing town not far from Burlington, and probably would be wrong on every one. It was best not to speculate. She supposed he would spill the beans in due time if they ever became friends.

Mackenzie had no problem making new friends. It was relationships she had trouble with. After a failed relationship with her college sweetheart, James, and then yet another with a cheating husband, Brent, she had pretty much sworn off men. Most were more trouble than they were worth. Her neighbor was probably no exception to the rule, even if he was single and available.

Besides, the man probably wouldn't like a woman with a child, anyway.

Mackenzie had a fifteen-year-old son, Ryan, who had recently decided to live with his father and stepmother in California. It had been the last thing Mackenzie had wanted, as she loved Ryan more than anything and felt she'd done a good job raising him all by herself. He was the one good thing to come out of her failed marriage and she would never have sent him away if it had been up to her. But it was Ryan's choice and she believed he was at a stage in his life where he needed a strong male role model to help guide him in the right direction. Her personal issues with Brent aside, she knew Ryan's father could do that.

This had unexpectedly given Mackenzie more freedom to live her life as a long-distance mom and single woman. As a thirty-seven-year-old with two careers, she had lots of pent-up passion and pleasure to give to the right man, should he ever come along.

Mackenzie moved up the blue cobblestone walkway in her mules toward her neighbor's two-story Adirondack-style home. It had red cedar siding and a shingle roof, giving it a rustic feel. There was a turret on each corner, plenty of windows and a burnt sienna wraparound porch. She glanced over at her own Cape Cod-style house with its gray stone exterior, a white slate roof and side gables. Built in the early twentieth century, Mackenzie considered it a historical treasure, though she welcomed the renovations the home had undergone over the years.

Mackenzie could hear the dog barking as she stood at the fiberglass door. Sensing it was on the other side and in no mood to be friendly, she actually considered coming back another time. Then the door opened.

Expecting to see the dog licking its chops, she instead found herself face-to-face with its owner. He was every bit as tall as she imagined, if not taller. The man was solidly built and wearing a formfitting crew-neck shirt and jeans.

Quite handsome, too.

"Hi," she said, managing to find her voice. "I'm Mackenzie Reese, your next-door neighbor. Just thought I'd stop by and welcome you to the block."

"Kind of you to do that." The man smiled broadly, causing Mackenzie to feel as though she'd melt on the spot. "Ian Kelly."

He put out a hand and she shook it, noting his hand was surprisingly soft. For one desperate moment, she wondered how that hand might feel on her body.

"Nice to meet you, Ian," she managed to say, willing her voice to remain steady.

"Likewise. I've been meaning to drop by your place to introduce myself, but I keep getting tied up with one thing or another—"

"That's okay," she said. "We're all pretty busy these days."

Ian twisted his lips. "Yeah, I suppose so. It's still no excuse not to be neighborly."

"I promise not to hold it against you." Especially when she was at least as guilty in not stopping by sooner.

He grinned. "Glad to know. I'd hate to get off on the wrong foot right off the bat."

Mackenzie laughed. "Baseball analogy. Interesting." Could he be a professional athlete?

"Bad habit of mine when it comes to getting to know someone."

"I'd say both feet are solidly on the ground as far as I'm concerned," she told him.

Ian gave an amused chuckle. "I can already tell that we're going to get along just fine."

"Is that what your crystal ball is telling you?" Mackenzie teased him.

"Actually it's more my gut instincts and seeing what's right in front of me."

"Hmm…" She was unsure how to top that.

There was a pause as their gazes met. Mackenzie felt an intense heat radiate from his stare. He had deep, gray-brown eyes that did not blink.

Ian broke the silence, frowning. "Where are my manners? Do you want to come in?"

Though tempted to see what the man had done with the place now that it was his, Mackenzie checked herself. "Maybe some other time. I have to get to work."

He gave her a look of disappointment, but quickly recovered. "That's cool. I was about to take Otis out for a walk anyway."

She cocked her brow. "I take it Otis is your dog?"

He grinned sexily. "Yeah. He gets antsy when he's stuck inside for too long."

"Don't we all," she couldn't help but say. Just be sure to keep him from tearing up my yard and we won't have any problems. "Well, I'll let you get to it. See you around."

"Count on it," Ian responded as though he knew something she didn't.

Ian Kelly watched with more than a little interest as his attractive neighbor sashayed away. He'd been checking her out from afar since he'd moved in, but hadn't been prepared for this up-close look. She was all that and then some.

Tall and slender with just the right curves and bends, she was wearing a coral shirtdress that seemed as though it were made for her body. He liked her shoulder-length, brunette hair. It was brushed back, layered and parted on the side. It went well with her high cheekbones and square face. He guessed Mackenzie was in her mid-thirties or just a few years under his forty.

He'd noted that she wasn't wearing a wedding ring. So she is single, too. And there was no indication that she had any kids. Another good sign. The last thing he was looking for was to become a daddy for the first time. Not that he had an issue with children, per se. He simply wasn't willing to take on that responsibility right now.

Ian definitely liked what he saw in Mackenzie. She was certainly a far cry from his last neighbor in Westport, Connecticut. While seventy-five-year-old Sarah Mae Stevenson was the most likeable person in the world, almost like a mother to him, she wasn't quite what he had in mind for exploring his romantic fantasies.

However, Mackenzie just might be. Something told Ian she would be able to keep up with him under the sheets every step of the way. The very notion gave Ian an adrenaline rush—one he hadn't felt in a while.

Had his neighbor really been able to have such a powerful effect on him in just a couple of minutes? Or had he gotten carried away with his imagination?

The fact was he'd never been able to settle down for one woman. That was because he hadn't met someone who could really capture his attention for very long. But if Mackenzie was half as interesting inside as she was sexy outside, perhaps he would be singing a different tune this time around.

Ian went to get Otis, whom he'd reluctantly put in a downstairs bedroom so as not to intimidate his visitor. The dog was truly harmless, but there was no reason to get off on the wrong foot with someone who might not be comfortable with dogs. He opened the door and the Lab jumped up on him as if reuniting with a long-lost friend. Ian felt the dog's wet tongue graze his chin lovingly.

"Sorry about that, boy. I didn't want you to scare the poor lady to death with your brand of affection. Give her time and I know you'll have her eating out of your hands."

Ian watched the dog race out of the room and down the hall. There was plenty of room for him to roam inside. That had been one of the main selling points of this house. Another plus was the incredible view of the Green Mountains. The Lamoille River was practically at his beck and call. Then there was the proximity to the resort town of Burlington. It offered an easy escape for fun and frolic outside of Cheri Village.

He considered it an added bonus that his next-door neighbor was a real hottie. Ian wondered just how long it would take to get to know her better.

Mackenzie was still thinking about her encounter with Ian when she got to work. She didn't expect to be impressed by the guy next door, but there was no getting around the fact that Ian Kelly was a sight to behold—broad featured, fit and tall enough to be able to handle a woman like her. He was all man and he made Mackenzie wonder why she'd waited so long to introduce herself.

But even that wasn't enough for her to fall all over the next-door neighbor. Assuming he didn't already have a lady, she wouldn't allow herself to get too carried away after one brief meeting anyway.

Why don't you see if a friendship develops before trying to get the man into bed?

Mackenzie walked through the doors of Magnificent Hair Salon, which she co-owned with her best friend, Sophia Rock-ford. They had bought the salon three years ago and now had a st...

By Urban Reviews McKenzie Reese is co-owner of a salon with her best friend, she sings jazz at a club every other Saturday, and her new neighbor is everything she could ask for in a man. Ian Kelly is the DJ of a jazz radio station, he is forty and has never been married, and his new neighbor is making him feel and want things that he never had before. There is just one little problem...McKenzie has a fifteen-year-old son that has recently decided to move to California to live with his father and stepmother. Ian has never really thought about having kids, and he is enjoying the time he is spending with McKenzie. When McKenzie's son calls and says he wants to come home, everything could change.Kissing The Man Next Door is an excellent read by Devon Vaughn Archer. The relationship between the main characters is very realistic and relatable. The characters are also very well developed which helps to make the overall story more enjoyable. Vaughn Archer also has a laid back writing style that flows and makes for an easy read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. interesting contemporary romance By A Customer In Cheri Village, Vermont, Mackenzie Reese actually feels pretty good about the empty nest when her fifteen years old son Ryan moves to Los Angeles to live with his father Brent and stepmother. She looks forward to enjoying life with no relationship entanglements especially fostering her career as a jazz singer while feeling Brent will be good for Ryan who needs a male role model.Leaving Westport, Connecticut, Ian Kelly accompanied by Otis the Labrador move next door to Mackenzie. The DJ at KRDQ, the jazz all the time radio station, Ian is attracted to Mackenzie and likes the idea her son moved out as he never dates any female with children. As their lives are jazzed up by their attraction, Ryan returns home with am angry chip on his shoulder; he hassles his stressed out mother. His ugliness forces Mackenzie to choose between her love for Ian who reconsiders his wisdom of no child left behind with him and her son who she still cherishes but has been difficult since returning to New England. The "triangle makes for an interesting contemporary romance as the teen nukes the relationship between his mother and his enemy next door. Ryan makes the tale as he comes home filled with anger and resentment as he takes his ire out on his mom and indirectly her lover. His actions force the lead couple to decide whether love is enough. Although Ian is never fully developed, fans will enjoy Mackenzie's heart breaking dilemma between KISSING THE MAN NEXT DOOR and dumping the man next door.Harriet Klausner

As I went through "Mindfulness for Beginners", I decided to implement some of the exercises right after reading them. Each mindfulness technique I followed put me in a relaxed state within a couple minutes. I am a very anxious guy who always seems stressed (my wife will attest to this), so I thought I would see little or no results. To experience any form of relaxation in a couple minutes blows my mind, so this book was a Godsend for me. And the state of relaxation I experienced deepened even more past the first couple minutes for each mindfulness exercise I tried. Don't take my word for it. Read this book and implement it so you can experience this goodness yourself :)

Good book By Brian Perry I hear a lot about mindfulness and its benefits, and so I was eager to get my hands on a guide that would explain to me in detail how to readily apply it in my life. I’ve been pleased with the information I’ve found inside, and the methods as well as points made in this book have been really useful for me. Mastering one’s emotions is tremendously important, and it can be beneficial in so many aspects of one’s life. Glad I found this one.

Very Valuable with lots of bonuses in different languages By Charles A 6-Week Meditation Guide For Finding Peace, Live in the Present, Stress and Anxiety Free. Just by the title alone, one will see that this book offers demonstrated steps and techniques on the most proficient method to alleviate stress through care based activities. Care for Beginners is an exceptionally pragmatic aide. I generally had a major uncertainty with books about "Care" in light of the fact that the name itself covers numerous things. I never truly knew the subject of these books. This book gives accommodating understanding into what I allude to as the specialty of care. It gives supportive procedures, for example, positive self talk, that can help you to accomplish a condition of care. It helps you to concentrate on things that you would somehow underestimate, for example, brushing your teeth and it shows that straightforward things like this should be possible mindfully to enhance your general wellbeing and prosperity.

in the seedy New York of 1976, Harris Colt, a Wall Street refugee, invented and with his wife, Margaretta, ran a specialty antiquarian bookstore, The Military Bookman. The store, in a brownstone in New York's Carnegie Hill, was a confluence of old and rare military, naval and aviation history books, with the rare characters, near and far, who wanted them. Those who love books, bookstore, and New York will savor this light-hearted memoir of a fantasy turned reality, a unique enterprise which flourished in the late 20th century. Many customers thought of it as "'Cheers' without the booze."

From Kirkus Reviews Most of all, it’s the story of a couple who dedicated their lives and livelihoods to a small, peculiar field, and the community that arose to embrace them. Colt is a surprisingly urgent and elegant writer… An engrossing, delightful descent into a life of books.

Review The story Margaretta Barton Colt has to tell in her charming memoir, “Martial Bliss” — do not misread its title as “Marital Bliss” — takes place only a few decades ago. But it seems to emerge as if from a time machine. Ms. Colt returns us to 1976, when New York City was a seedier and stranger place. Ms. Colt’s husband, Harris Colt, had lost his Wall Street job. Rather than seek a new one, he and the author pursued his unlikely dream: They opened a specialty antiquarian bookstore unlike any other, one that sold only military titles… Would there be enough books to sell? One pleasure of reading Ms. Colt’s account is learning about significant and unusual titles in a sweeping number of military genres. The store covered warfare from “rocks to rockets,” Ms. Colt comments. … If you can read about all of this without ordering some of these books (online, sadly) you are a stronger person than I…. Would anyone come? Another pleasure of Ms. Colt’s book is feasting on details about the store’s offbeat band of customers: the regulars, the cranks, the autodidacts, the dandies, the lurkers, the charmers, the cheats, the mouth-breathing Soldier of Fortune types…. Ms. Colt’s voice, in this memoir, is lively if low-key. She clearly kept a diary. There is minutia about nearly every book-buying trip the couple took in America or Europe, what they drank, where they slept. But these exacting details are also this book’s gift. She recalls the names of dozens of now-forgotten bookstores and experts. If a book dealer stiffed her, she names names. Her volume is a kind of secret history of Manhattan’s book trade, and in some ways it’s a deep slice of the English-speaking world’s. “Martial Bliss” cracks open a whole world. It has a real if accumulative emotional impact, and it made me laugh out loud more than once. Dwight Garner, The New York Times

Review … the Military Bookman was that kind of bookshop--one where personal relationships with customers mattered. One regular called it “Cheers without the booze.” But unlike other booksellers’ memoirs, it’s not nostalgia that fuels the telling. She shares her memories in a pleasant, matter-of-fact way, as if setting straight the record for posterity--or for her former customers, who will, no doubt, adore reading her account. As will those with an interest in antiquarian books, bookselling, or military history. “The fine line between passion and obsession was probably crossed many times in the stacks of the Military Bookman,” she writes… For those who missed out on this New York City institution, Martial Bliss invites us in. Written in an elegantly easy style, this book captures a time when New York loved books, specialty bookstores abounded, and The Military Bookman was one of the best. Harris Colt left Wall Street to turn his skill, his experience, and his life-long passion for collecting things military into the reality of a shop that would be a resource for like-minded collectors and scholars. That Margaretta, though taken by surprise was instantly on board with the enterprise the moment Harris announced it, speaks brilliantly to a very special and lively affection that shines through every line of their story. And a Divine Providence must have been on board, too, because good luck seems also to have shone on the project at every turn - good luck and a remarkably extensive circle of friends, neighbors, and family who brought cheerful helping hands to build this Upper East Side treasure. Margaretta Colt has written much more than the memoir of a book store. She has written a wonderful love story.

By Jeffrey Simpson by Jeffrey Simpson, author of American Elegy and Rose Cumming: Design Inspiration.Martial Bliss: The Story of the Military Bookman by Margaretta Barton Colt recounts the thirty year ownership by Colt and her late husband, Harris, of a rare military history bookshop on New York's East 93rd Street. This is the kind of book that creates its own world, and it's a world you want to retreat into and never leave. The enclosed space in the English basement floor of an 1890s brownstone is warm and hermetic. Colt evokes and describes the idiosyncratic customers and often equally idiosyncratic staff with tolerance and a real eye for the eccentric detail. When the Colts travel to England--and occasionally France and Germany--on buying trips once or twice a year, they seem to have a magnetic attraction for their own kind, so the booksellers lodged in old manor houses or half-timbered village shops are The Military Bookman Abroad.A not inconsiderable pleasure of this book is the expert and mouth watering detail Colt brings to describing the inventory--everything from traditional Japanese wood block prints, but with the subject being the ironclad ships of the 1905 Russo-Japanese War breathing fire and smoke, to a 50 foot long engraving of 1852 funeral of the Duke of Wellington. And of course, the books themselves! They made regular customers of the staffs of West Point and the Pentagon, as well as the neighborhood rich recluses and the occasional bag lady.Like Mrs. Gaskell's Cranford--or even childhood classics such as The Wind in the Willows, Martial Bliss is its own snow globe creation and you only wish you could have lived inside it.

It brings back memories of many mornings the day after receiving the little red catalog, frantically dialing and speed-redialing to the heart-wrenching sound of the busy signal as I stared at my circled choices, heart in my mouth that my selections would still be there. I usually got Harris on the phone, but sometimes Margaretta or Jason. If my top two or three choices were gone, Harris patiently strolled the stacks looking for alternate editions or similar titles. He never failed to come up with something, and they were often better than my original choices. He was a walking , talking annotated bibliography. He, Margaretta and Jason came to know my likes: those British staff histories prepared for Sandhurst classes or for the officer promotion exams and official histories of those little wars of Victorian and Edwardian days---Kipling's army.I am quoted in the book (upon receiving a faithful client gift and a catalog with staff photos) “You all look as friendly as you sound”. Indeed, friendly and caring (and patient) they were. I only regret that during my infrequent trips to Manhattan from DC I never got the chance to visit the store.Margaretta's love for the business she was pulled into pell-mell by Harris shines through as does her love and respect for her scholar/entrepeneur husband. The book world (what's left of it) will sorely miss him. This is an extremely lively book –not something one would expect in a book about a book business—with plenty of human interest stories about the trade and its “characters”. Thanks to the fine collection of military history books I snagged from MB, I became a military and naval historian, now finishing up the ms of my third book (on ancient Roman sea power). As I gaze around at my overflowing shelves and mounds of books about 90% from MB, , I am enjoying browsing through Margaretta's warm yet erudite memoir. I can still hear Harris's nasal twang on the phone as he suggested. “That one is sold, but I think you would love this...” And I inevitably did.Besides the sparkling prose and chatty insider's anecdotes about the world of both the main and the arcane booksellers of Manhattan a world now gone, this is an excellent primer on the military historian's profession. The demise of MB, as well as it's kindred shops, was a victory of electronic media over we poor Luddites who see books as objects to hold and cherish, and yes, to read, bookmark and even annotate in pencil.Margaretta Barton Colt provides as well, and most imporantly to this reader and collector, a grand tour of military history through its rare and long-gone printed volumes. She is quite a scholar in her own right, and yet wears her learning lightly. You need not be a military history afficionado to enjoy this book. The fact that it will appeal to that group as well as a general reading public is a bonus.
