Buddy Hartman was adopted by a woman who wanted to get a child to please her husband. When the husband leaves, the woman becomes a prostitute to support herself, and then becomes an addict to soothe the pain. Buddy learns early that life teaches you to be selfish. However, it's Buddy's own drug abuse later in life that leads him to Barry, his "Eskimo," who saves him from a life of addiction. At 31, Buddy is a sober and clean music promoter in Minneapolis, and he writes mysteries on the side, but he is incomplete. He wants to know who his biological mother is. The State of Minnesota informs him that his mother is still alive, living in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, she is a freak who is 1/2 of the famous Hilton Twins, Siamese sisters who were famous vaudevillians in the 1920s and '30s, but who are now living in poverty and working at a Park 'n Shop grocery. Buddy's life is changed forever when he takes his mother and aunt to the 1968 Chicago Democratic National Convention in an attempt to resurrect their entertainment careers and find out his own identity. Buddy learns what being a freak really means, as the power of the State meets the power of the counterculture heroes. But this is the late '60s, and heroes are falling all around him, as Buddy reaches out for a father, finding a substitute in a black Civil Rights leader and a famous Yippie. But his real father, when Buddy meets him, is the biggest surprise of all. As Dundee International Fiction Prize Winner for 2012, Jacob M. Appel, puts it, Freak Story is "Part zany alternate history of the late 1960s, part moving drama of family and personal growth, Freak Story creates a unique and thoroughly engrossing universe all its own."

This novel is truly engrossing, messy, loving, and ultimately beautifully human. The plot, characters, research, and overall story are fantastic. However, there is an intangible quality to this novel that truly pushes this book from really good to I absolutely loved it. The author delved into many issues both historically and those issues that humans have been dealing with for all time. The author dealt with these issues in a way that made it an authentic journey for the reader. Basically, I truly believe that almost any reader will find things in this book that speak to them and will have a great time reading.

The plot line, the characters and the stream-of-consciousness point of view combine to make Freak Story a pleasurable and fascinating read. Freak Story is a narrative of the life of Buddy Hartman who was adopted by a woman who wanted a child to please her husband. After her husband leaves Buddy's new mother turns to prostitution and drugs to support herself and ease the pain of her new life. After struggling with, and overcoming, his own drug addiction Buddy decides to seek out his biological mother and discover his genetic identity. What happens next is perfectly messy and flawed and freakish as Buddy discovers his mother is one-half of the famous Hilton Twins who are actually Siamese Twins and former Vaudeville performers! Buddy then embarks on a mission to restore their entertainment careers and sort out his own true identity. This book won't appeal to a mass audience in quite the same way that Musgrave's O'Malley mysteries do but when the right reader connects with Freak Story it will be poetic and freakishly beautiful. I was definitely the right audience for this book. The characters, the "freaks" if you will, were absolutely delightful! They were lovable, charming and easily stole the show. There were times I actually wished that the book was centered around Daisy and Violet (the Hilton Twins) instead of around Buddy. I could easily sit and read an entire novel based around their Vaudeville performing days. They were optimistic, cheerful and passionate about life; they were a direct contrast to Buddy's adoptive mother who collapsed into sorrow and despair when faced with challenges of her own. This strong character contrast of Buddy's two mothers provided great insight into human behavior. The women in Buddy's life were well-written and really show Musgrave's talent for developing his characters. As for Buddy himself, he has his own attributes that make him a "freak" of his time but how much do I tell without spoiling the book? It's enough to say that the book is set in the late 1960's when society as a whole isn't very accepting of anyone who is different than the norm. There is a lot of racism, prejudice and intolerance, the Civil Rights movement is ongoing and Buddy doesn't really belong to any accepted group. He's a societal misfit and it's easy to relate to him; most people will admit to feeling like an outcast or a "freak" at some point. One minor criticism with Freak Story is the strong shift in writing style during dialogue. I never noticed such a shift when reading Musgrave's mystery, Disappearance at Mount Sinai and I can only assume it's due to the different time period and POV. Disappearance at Mount Sinai is set in the late 1800's in post-Civil War era America involving racist but "normal" people whereas Freak Story is set in 1960's Civil Rights era America during involving "freaks" and a judgmental society. The descriptive narrative of Freak Story was poetic and beautifully written but the same eloquence wasn't captured in the dialogue. At times the dialogue felt cold despite the surrounding script being captivating. It was an odd shift but then again, this was an odd book. It's easy to overlook the flawed dialogue and it may not even be something that the majority of readers notice. It is impossible to compare Freak Story 1967-1969 to any other book I've ever read because it is such an unique and interesting tale. The best I can do is compare it to the 2003 Tim Burton film "Big Fish" starring Ewan McGregor. In both situations a son is trying to understand his parents, his lineage and himself by exploring a family history that consists of people and circumstances that challenge convention. Personally, I loved Freak Story 1967-1969 and would recommend giving it a chance. Even if it doesn't sound like something you would normally read I think you will find yourself in love.Review by Ashley LaMarClosed the Cover

Coming into your own during a tumultuous time such as the Civil Rights Era must make this basic human struggle all the more difficult. Mr. Musgrave depicts this beautifully.

In their classic bestseller, Grace & Forgiveness, John and Carol Arnott open up these two topics, and show us how intertwined they really are. In a world that demands justice, while promoting a perverse idea of false grace, we can only truly understand the beauty of God s grace when we understand his love towards us. Once we grasp the magnitude of his love and the reality of the grace we have been shown, then forgiveness becomes an essential, non–negotiable component of the Christian life.

By HJ I've been struggling with emotional wounds and depression for 1-2 yrs.(keep Contending for it to break)I tried everything, and it's been a tough and hard season in my life.I bought this book through Amazon Kindle, and read 60% of book and it really really really helped me toget some revealation about Grace and forgiveness. I highly recommend for those who tried toget a Grace based Relationship with God and contending for Encounter with God of Grace. As I read this book, HolySpirit brought me up that my mindset was based on Judgemental not Mercy or his grace. After going through short prayer (hearted) with HolySpirit, I felt lighter and lighter than before.I believe as I finish this book, HolySpirit will give me more revealation about Grace and Forgiveness.I am so Thankful for God who gave John&Carol Arnott, who has hungry heart for God.

Best Ebook Fat Is the New 30: The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Coping with (the crappy parts of) Life, by Jill Conner Browne

The Sweet Potato Queens® are back and bawdier than ever in Southern belle extraordinaire Jill Conner Browne’s ninth edition of the hysterical series. Having experienced pretty much ALL of the crappy parts of life, Browne feels it is her duty to render whatever assistance she can to her fellow sufferers―and she does so in her own inimitable fashion.

Her father taught her there are very few situations in life that we really and truly cannot change, and it is up to us to figure out how to either make fun OUT of them―or make fun OF them. And fortunately for the rest of us, Browne is well equipped for both. Including the exploits of the Queen contingent and her family, she delivers applicable tidbits like:

• Thinking or talking about watermelon can save any negative situation.• If you get drunk in Scotland, you can’t have your cow with you.• When sanity and reason fail, you can always cheerfully resort to ridicule.• Denial means that every situation is perfectly perfect.

More fun than a Cracker Barrel full of monkeys, Fat Is the New 30 will change your life―or at least give you ideas for making fun of yourself.

Fat Is the New 30: The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Coping with (the crappy parts of) Life, by Jill Conner Browne

Amazon.com Review Q&A with Jill Conner Browne, The Sweet Potato Queen Question: The Sweet Potato Queens were born on a gleeful St. Patrick’s Day, back in 1982, when you and a few friends decided to get Queened-up for local parade in Jackson, Mississippi. Did you realize that parade would begin an international movement for women?

Jill Conner Browne: Yes, It was my Five-Year Plan. Are you kidding me? No! I had no idea I would become a cult leader! My only goal was to entertain myself—a goal that endures to this very day, I might add.

Question: Tell us a little about the annual Zippity Doo Dah Parade that happens at the end of March every year. Women come from all over the world, wear sequins, and march with bands, raise money for charity, eat and laugh. How does it all come together? (Let us live vicariously!)

JCB: We simply out-grew the other parade and started our own, which has been fantastic for the Queendom, the city of Jackson and most importantly, for Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children. Queens (and Spud Studs) start arriving on Wednesday of parade week--March 21-25 for 2012--and overnight the city is overcome with sparkle. It is four days of fantastic: Arts, Eats & Beats in the Fondren Arts District, The Come On In Party, Big Hat Brunch, SPQ Big Hair Ball, Sal & Mookie's Kids' Carnival, Patty Peck Honda Car Giveaway, the beautiful "Night-Time Zippity Doo Dah Parade" immediately followed by the street dance, Pearls & PJs at the Hilton, and ending with the Bathrobe Brunch on Sunday morning. And it all raises money for sick kids—what could be better?

Question: Fat is the New 30 is your ninth book. Is there a theme that runs through all of your books, other than being stitch-in-the-gut funny?

JCB: Life is too short—and too LONG—to spend it doing ANYTHING that doesn't make your heart sing.

Question: You believe that humor is the best medicine, which is evident throughout the book since you make us laugh at even the "crappiest parts of life." How are you able to mix humor and happiness into nearly every life situation?

JCB: Oh, my Daddy taught me many useful things! One of the most important was this: There are very few situations in life that we really and truly cannot change. But when we do encounter one of those, the task at hand is to figure out how to either make fun out of it--or make fun of it. I am extraordinarily gifted in this department.

Question: Nearly all of your books, including Fat is the New 30, include some "you’ll have to roll me out of the kitchen" recipes. Do you test them all out? Which of the new recipes is your favorite?

JCB: Did I test them all? Have you SEEN me lately? If and when you do see me, you will note that I am wearing a very long jacket. Suffice it to say that if I am ever found dead in a short jacket, you will know that I was dead before the jacket went on. Yes, I tested all the recipes and they are poison! If you eat this stuff all the time, you WILL DIE--and you will die with a HUGE bee-hind--however, they are VERY good for your disposition. My fave? Why, I love them all, obviously! Can happily go from Scott-apeno Dip to Viney's Floor of the Hilton Minner Cheese to I-Can't-See-My-Feet Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding.

Question: You’re a Southern Girl but there are Queens from all over the world. Do you think we all have a little Southern in us?

JCB: My "voice" is that of a Southern woman--on account of that's what I turned out to be (luckily)--but the experiences are universal so no Southern is required. However, if you are lacking in Southern, you can certainly get you some in my books and it will make you happy!

Question: What’s next for you and the Queens?

JCB: The Sweet Potato Queens Musical! I just got the first draft from Melissa Manchester, Sharon Vaughn and Rupert Holmes! It's always been my dream--and now it is happening! Of course, that doesn't require ANY effort on my part--which is so perfect--I can be entertained while lolling. Heaven.

From Booklist Hilarious . . . Poignant . . . The Sweet Potato Queens’ chronicler returns with the ninth in the series and this time takes on the more serious parts of life, such as raising children, getting older, and surviving a recession, with her trademark bawdy humor. As before, she peppers each chapter with her and others’ personal anecdotes. . . .Legions of Sweet Potato Queens, now boasting 6,200 chapters in 20-plus countries, will line up for the latest book in Browne’s popular series. —Booklist

Sweet Potato Queen's Humble Subject By Love my Lab I laughed so hard reading just the first few chapters last night that my Lab jumped off the bed and slept on the floor. This is my 1st SPQ book and look forward to getting to the whole bunch of 'em. I am now one of Her Majesty's loyal subjects. Long live the Queen!

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Southern entertainment at its best! By Donna McBroom-Theriot I have to say that Jill Conner Browne is one of my favorite authors. Her humor has been my entertainment from the very first book she wrote. I could not tell you when I've laughed and cried so much while reading a book. She captivates you with her down-to-earth, tell-it-like-it-is humor from the first page to the last.I have every single one of her books so imagine my delight (jumping up and down here) when I received an email asking me to review her new book. As I said, I have been an avid follower of Jill since her book first appeared in Southern Living Magazine umpteen years ago along with an article about the Sweet Potato Queen's Parade.Fat Is the New 30 does not let the reader down. It picks up where any of her previous books leave off, making you laugh from start to finish. Through her words, the author has the unique ability to bring you into her life, holding you confined to your seat as you turn page after page.By the time you finish the last page and close the book, you feel as though Jill has invited you into her life and confidence; and she just wants to help you through life's vicissitudes. She teaches us how to survive raising those children (lovely as they might be) from infant to teenager to adulthood with humor and a little denial (well, a LOT of denial) thrown in. Because after all, isn't that the best way to survive life?Southerners are going to love this book. And, well, if you're not a Southerner, you are going to wish you were! So, grab this book, the biggest tiara (and most sparkly) you can find, and a tall glass of Southern style sweet tea (you'll want to refrain from drinking as not to snort the stuff as you become pomaded from laughter and thus, it WILL come out of places we Southern ladies don't like to mention) - where was I - oh yeah - grab that tall glass of iced tea and sit and read for a while. You'll be glad you did.

Avid Leo Reader By avid leo reader Well part two picks up with the characters up their same old shenanigans looking for new side pieces and dealing with their situations at home. Being caught up in lust will definitely have a lot of them thinking what will they gain and lose at the same time. As some enter new relationships, New alliances will be formed and payback will definitely be a bitch . Will love survive or will lust win? Well read and find out. I see there will be a part three to this complex situation.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another great Roxy Wilson read By ShaSeli I received a copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.Ms. Wilson has done it again. She has written a great novella that not only entertains, but informs. She has tackled not only the topic of plus size modeling and some pitfalls that go with it, but also tackled the topic of alopecia in women. The intersection of these two issues creates a story that is very touching and important. What was even interesting was how the people around Layla treated her, good and bad, when her hair issues manifested. My only concerns about the story was that the issues with her mother, while I feel were critical to her life, were glossed over. I continue to LOVE Ms. Wilson's writing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Amazing Short, yet Telling Read... By Dst4T Clint and Layla's story was a very touching and moving one. How does one feel when others see them as imperfect? This was a short, but very telling story. Layla had a lot of issues to deal with that didn't include the loss of her hair. I enjoyed the read and the story flowed very well. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys seeing the good guys come out on top for a change.T

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Stay Positive!! By stella1999 I received this story in exchange for an honest review. Layla was a model going thru issues and Clint is a Doctor dealing with issues with his patients. Don't wanna give any details but this story hits home on real issues in everyday life. I loved it and learned a couple of things along the way. True friends will help you thru anything. Great Job Roxy!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I really enjoyed this book! By Hannah D. Spivey I'm back with another book review. It has taken me a few days to read Ashea's, Count it all Joy." It consists of a newly wed couple, Joshua and Alex Bennings. Joshua is a Minister and an accountant. This is his second marriage and he has a daughter from his previous marriage. Joshua has aspirations of starting his own church while Alex wants to adopt a Kenyan boy named, Kaino. With mounting debt that was accrued by his late wife Delilah, it drives a strain into their marriage, making the adoption nearly impossible. Besides that, Alex and Joshua are trying to have another baby, which is intertwined with a secret that nearly destroyed their relationship prior to marriage. Not only is Joshua desperate to impregnate Alex, but he does the unthinkable. If the Benning's financial and marital woes aren't frustrating enough, add Joshua's controlling mother, Mrs. Benning to the equation. Not only does she not care for Alex, but she's determined to make Joshua shut down his own dreams to pastor his ailing father's church. Author Ashea Golden shows how a couple that has so much plight hanging over their shoulders still manage to overcome adversities. The moral of the story is, the creator will never give anything you can't handle.

Another great read from Ashea Goldson By 1vir2ouswoman In Count it all joy which is the sequel to Joy comes in the morning (which is a good book as well) we continue on the journey with Alex and Joshua as they endure the first years of marriage. As with any journey, there are good times and then there are difficult times. I was impressed with how both Alex and Joshua handled their issues. It shows that we all go through tough times but it is in those times that we should turn to God and not away from Him. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good read that will leave you both encouraged and inspired.

I purchased the sequel and left it on my TBR pile for far too long. I read it last weekend and couldn't put it down. I cried. Ashea Golson is a great storyteller. I'm sold on her work for life. She's a sleeper. Don't pass this book by.

DNt buy By Amazon Customer first off Tatiana is 11 when she's raped by her stepdad/dad best friend fastfoward a few years she has a child and is in love with this same man. The man who is the father to her brother is also the father to her child and she is willing in a relationship with him. The most disgusting thing about it is that it's no secret to anyone everyone walks around as if this is ok. Desmond jokes about Tati being his baby mama like its a badge of honor let's not foget that she is now 17 sleeping with about 4 different people her stepdad who is now her fiancé, her current baby dad , her ex gf and a few other chicks . The story is a mess don't waste your time

Tower of the Hand: A Flight of Sorrows was a book jam-packed with insightful analysis of the Song of Ice and Fire series, but it only barely scratched the surface of the huge and complex world that author George R.R. Martin has created. A second anthology, then, is not only desirable, it’s absolutely critical to unearth all that Martin has tucked away into the many dense folds of his narrative. Here’s how we’ve expanded A Hymn for Spring in order to make it the most comprehensive exploration of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros yet:

  • Updated to cover the newly published Song of Ice and Fire material, including The Princess and the Queen, The Rogue Prince, and The World of Ice and Fire.
  • Four brand-new authors, who hail from some of the most authoritative Ice and Fire websites and podcasts, in order to provide fresh perspectives on the main series.
  • More than twice the size of A Flight of Sorrows, allowing not only for more essays on a wider range of subjects, but also for longer, more comprehensive analysis.
  • A huge swath of bonus material, including additional essays from the Hymn for Spring authors and their special guests.
NEW AUTHORS Steven Attewell, the mastermind behind Race for the Iron Throne, brings his political and historical expertise to bear on the effectiveness of Machiavellianism in the game of thrones and the economic gamesmanship of Lord Petyr Baelish. The founder of Wars and Politics of Ice and Fire, Jeff Hartline, makes readers fundamentally question their understanding of King Stannis Baratheon. And History of Westeros co-hosts Aziz and Ashaya offer the single most authoritative account of the history – and mythology – of Harrenhal, while Tower of the Hand/Wars and Politics of Ice and Fire contributor Jim McGeehin does the same for Robert’s Rebellion. RETURNING AUTHORS Stefan Sasse, from the Boiled Leather Audio Hour and The Nerdstream Era, determines the effects that patriarchy and civil war have had on the Westerosi psychological makeup. A Podcast of Ice and Fire co-host Amin Javadi investigates the nature that songs and singers play in the various cultures of the Seven Kingdoms, and, even, in the nature of the narrative itself. And Tower of the Hand co-founders John Jasmin and Alexander Smith expand the focus to include both an exploration of how HBO’s Game of Thrones simultaneously improves and degrades Martin’s original story and a look at traditional games to help predict the success of all those who play the game of thrones.

R. Martin's ''A Song of ice and Fire'', you write essays online but why should I pay for it. What's the difference between one lengthy post on a forum and works by these fans, except that these latter can organize it by themes and specific ideas, oh and they back it up by research, and they can consolidate their ideas by careful thinking and boil it down to specific essences, oh and they write very well...okay aside from that, what's the difference? If you are a fan of A Song of Ice and fire and the TV show Game of Thrones, then A Hymn for Spring is an essential book. It broadens and deepens your fondness for the book, introduces a web of connections and allusions to take with you on your next re-read of the books and mostly directs your view to the broad tapestry of George R. R. Martin's richly deconstructive and strongly allusive work of fantasy/alternate history. The essays look at various aspects. Amin Javadi studies the prominent roles music plays in George R. R. Martin's world, Stefan Sasse analyses the character of Ser Barristan, Steven Attewell likewise studies the influence, real and cultural, of Renaissance humanist Niccolo Machiavelli on the overall series, as well as a solidly educational look at how medieval finances actually worked and how its represented here. Alexander Smith, likewise analyses the transition of characters from page to screen. If I have a quibble its that the books are so vast that these essays feel like mere scratching the surface. It's both too specific and too general. It is also compounded by the fact that the books in question are still not complete and await two volumes, so that can be expected. Still here's hoping there are further volumes which broadens the entire books. I would especially like one studying the innovative dramaturgy in the series, the critique and challenge to "main characters" as opposed to "supporting characters" which is the major achievement of George R. R. Martin's ensemble.

You can tell these writers are huge fans of the series and they all make interesting points in their respective chapters. If you're an obsessed ASOIAF fan who digs into the theories and discussion on Internet forums I really recommend this book.

I highly recommend this book to single and married ladies By Michelle Nichols I purchased this book for my daughter and before I gave it to her, found myself engrossed in each chapter. The title rings true....it is a journey of self exploration. Dr. Bell has shared from her own journey, but it is certainly a journey that each of us as women need to explore, regardless of our marital status. Waiting on God to prepare us and to adorn us will only strengthen our relationships, not only with our spouses but our relationships with one another. I highly recommend this book to single and married ladies, and fellows, it's certainly a book that can benefit you as well. Thank you Dr. Bell for sharing this insightful gift and for guiding us with your words of wisdom through a journey of reflection and exploration of ourselves.

Perfect for those single and Waiting on God to uncover our mate or those that are in a relationship just looking to perfect the relationship and bring a spiritual foundation to the relationship. It was eye opening to complete the questions at the end of each chapter. I finished the book in half hour becausei couldn't put it down and then went back and re read in order to fully process the questions asked. Would definitely recommend this book to those looking to put God first in their relationship and to those wanting to approach a relationship clean. Would love to see a sequel talking about married life and maintaining the relationship through kids and jobs.

This book is amazing, I am a 30 year old single woman who was lost until I began to read and meditate over this book. I have always prayed for my interpretation of that "Perfect Man" and was wondering why I kept meeting loser. After going to one of the Traveling Book clubs hosted by Dr Ebonie Bell, things have become more clearly to me. I was searching for something and praying for something that I wasn't yet ready for and still preparing for. As you take your own personal journey through this book you will truly learn more about you and what changes you may need to make in order to be ready for Gods blessing. It's definitely a MUST READ!

I'm Happy for You (Sort Of...Not Really): Finding Contentment in a Culture of Comparison, by Kay Wills Wyma

Review Praise for I’m Happy for You (Sort of…Not Really) “Kay Wills Wyma once again champions a much-needed culture shift—with heartfelt insight she challenges us to choose contentment over comparison. I’m Happy for You gently exposes the growing obsession with self-promotion and one-upmanship that’s wearing us all out and, thankfully, offers wise solutions.” —Tracey Eyster, Founder of FamilyLife’s MomLifeToday.com; author of Be the Mom and Beautiful Mess “Kay Wills Wyma captured my attention with her belly-laughing good storytelling steeped in reality as she tackled a question that’s long overdue for an honest answer: What should we do about this comparison trap we find ourselves falling into daily? When comparison steals contentment, it’s a problem that demands a solution. Kay gives it to us in a way that is easy on the heart and good for the soul.” —Elisa Pulliam, author and life coach “Who knew comparison was so prevalent and destructive? Awakening to this alone is worth the time invested in reading this honest and sometimes raw literary gem. Comparison’s thievery of joy is arrested by the ‘just let it go’ practicality Kay offers so transparently and humorously. It might just put you on the path toward contentment and gratitude, a road less traveled.” —Robin Pou, executive coach and attorney mediator; coauthor of Performance Intelligence at Work “Kay Wyma has managed to address what we’re all dealing with on a daily basis—the ability to instantly compare our life to someone else’s with just a mere look at our phone. There we can see all the ways we are failing to be the best mom, the best wife, the best friend…and the list goes on. In the pages of I’m Happy for You, Kay offers insight into why we do this and how we can stop the cycle. If you’re looking to live a life of contentment and authenticity and to be okay when your kid is the C student and not the valedictorian, you’ll find comfort and realistic solutions in the pages of this book.” —Melanie Shankle, New York Times best-selling author of Sparkly Green Earrings “I’m Happy for You is honest and funny, while tackling a serious problem that is stealing our joy: comparison. Kay creatively uses stories and personal confession to reveal the pitfalls of comparing, while offering a solid ladder—built on godly wisdom—to help us climb out of that pit. I wish I could pass this book on to every woman who has worn herself out trying to achieve unrealistic standards. There’s freedom on these pages.” —Jennifer Dukes Lee, author of Love Idol “Kay Wyma hit a home run on the Focus on the Family radio program when she talked about ways moms can combat the entitlement mentality in their kids. In her new book, she scores another hit with an insightful discussion of the pitfalls of comparing your life to others, especially through social media. Her advice is timely and relevant.” —Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family “Victims of comparison drive-bys litter the Internet. There are virtual warehouses of new ways to covet your neighbor’s home, decorating skills, summer vacation plans, or Pinterest-perfect kids’ birthday parties. In this paralyzing culture of obsessive comparisons, this book is the detox we all need. With a sense of humor and an unrelenting honesty, Kay walks us through the steps to finding our worth again in the God who never compares us but always only calls us by name.” —Lisa-Jo Baker, community manager for (in)courage; author of Surprised by Motherhood “There is no joy to be found in comparing ourselves to others. Fortunately, with both cultural relevance and biblical foundation, Kay Wills Wyma accurately defines not only the comparison problem, but offers a solution. I’m Happy for You is a must-read for anyone caught in the comparison trap.”—Joshua Becker, best-selling author of Simplify; founder of Becoming Minimalist “For years I’ve said ‘Comparison is the kiss of death of gratitude.’ Whether we stroll the shopping malls, thumb through catalogs, shop online, or inadvertently compare ourselves to others, we are imperceptibly overwhelmed with longings to be like someone else, to have something else, believing it somehow enhances our identity. The pursuit of bigger, better, newer, and more never stops. With a compelling lilt, Kay Wills Wyma’s pen pulls us along only to expose and confront our comparison battle. From one co-struggler to another, Kay brings us perspective and relief.” —Dr. Michael Easley, former president of Moody Bible Institute; teaching pastor; host of Michael Easley inContext “Kay Wills Wyma has opened a powerful window on the reality of comparison and how it’s impacting all of us, including vulnerable young lives. With social media, instead of just keeping up with the Joneses, we’re now keeping up with the world. Kay navigates us through the pressures we all face and teaches us how to be genuinely happy for others and deliberate about our current situation and future plans at every stage of life.” —Kathy Ireland, chair/CEO/chief designer at kathy ireland Worldwide

I was excited about the message: Being happy with who you are and what you have. Living in the moment. Don't risk missing precious moments because you're too busy wanting to be like someone else. In fact, one early quote really resonated with me:"Looking at what we lack prevents us from noticing how sweet the world already is. But when we shift our focus from what could be to what actually is, we find extraordinary joy in our ordinary lives." What a lovely and positive sentiment. Plus I liked the book's catchy, humorous title.I really hate when I'm one of the few people who isn't raving about a particular book, but I had some difficulty raving about this one. Early on I began to feel as though the author and her friends spend a great deal time envying everyone around them. For me, the constant "comparison obsession" just didn't seem realistic. Real, everyday life is just too darn hectic to spend so much time ruminating over what everyone else has or does - at least for me it is. Maybe a fleeting thought here and there, but all the time? Highly unlikely. Yet the author confides that she "struggles with comparison almost from the minute (she) gets out of bed." This is an actual quote from the book. At one point she went on for several pages about how she had agonized over what embarrassing things her friend might have seen in her refrigerator when she brought over some brownies. It also struck me as though Ms. Wyma was trying very hard to make her case for what she's coined, "obsessive comparison disorder". Even going back to biblical times to suggest the story of Adam and Eve is really about Eve's sudden knowledge that "someone had something she didn't" (and perhaps not about temptation and disobedience to God as we may have originally thought?).When the author started discussing the impact of social media on society and the obsession with achieving the perfect body I thought I'd find some good information. But instead I found generalized and empty statements that served to further group everyone together as a dysfunctional whole. Things like "each of us carries a mental mirror..." and "Glamour magazine recently conducted a follow-up survey from thirty years ago...the results revealed that women feel worse about themselves today." A Glamour magazine survey is in no way reliable enough to sway me one way or another about anything and I'm too darn busy to carry a mental mirror around with me all the time. I have a difficult time with books that try to group all of society together in order to make a point.I do have to say that the author has included some positive and encouraging tidbits in the form of quotes, sayings and footnotes. She's clearly intelligent and her writing is easy to read. She's also a woman of faith and that comes through in her words. (Although, when she talked about buying flowers for a woman who stole her parking spot at the grocery store I admit I did a mental eye roll.) There is a definite religious element in this book that readers may or may not appreciate, depending on their own beliefs. I think the author's heart was in the right place, but the delivery just wasn't there - at least it wasn't for me.2.5 StarseBook Review Gal received a complimentary copy of this book from Net Galley and Blogging for Books in exchange for an honest review.

It is so relevant to what happens on social media that I found myself nodding in agreement the whole time I was reading "I'm happy for you (sort of… Not really.)" Sadly I couldn't agree more with the authors assessment that we live in a culture of comparison. With the holidays upon us there's no better time to remind ourselves that the comparison trap just breeds unhappiness and discontentment. How many times have you scrolled through Facebook and seen someone's holiday decorations and felt completely shabby? Or searched Pinterest for a new holiday recipe and realized that you are completely inadequate. Not good enough. Not creative enough. Not rich enough. Not smart enough. The messages are loud and clear. But is that the message that's being sent or the one we are receiving? Often what we receive is not the intended message and is more a reflection of our own inner demons than anything else.Kay writes with a wit and humor that I can relate to and made me feel comforted and less alone that I am not alone in my assertions or interpretations. The question remains, what do we do about? How do we learn to feel contentment and stop comparing ourselves to everyone else?We are our own worst enemy Kay helps squash some of the myths and messages that we think we are receiving and reminds us what life is all about. It's not about what the Jone's are doing. What is in YOUR heart? It's time to let go of the comparison game and learn acceptance and love of ourselves and our life. You only get this life. Why waste it thinking of what you aren't and spend it being grateful and embracing who you are? I found so much relief just in the past couple of years letting go of a clean home. I don't care anymore. I let it go. Sometimes I see other friends with clean homes but it no longer makes me feel inadequate. It is where I am in life right now and I fully accept that and even embrace it."I'm happy for you (sort of… Not really)" is a great read just in time for the holiday season. Don't fall into the trap. You are so much more!

Much-needed book for our culture By Denise McFarland I'm Happy For You {Sort Of...Not Really}: Finding Contentment In A Culture Of Comparison by Kay Wills Wyma is a much-needed breath of fresh air for our current culture that measures people's worth on the size of their house, the model of their car, how many likes their Facebook and Instagram posts get, and what clothes they wear. I notice that I've struggled with the problem of contentment and comparison much, much more since Facebook and social media was created: people frame their lives by snapshots of the best moments, the best meals, the best outfits, and more - but no one sees the reality behind the scenes and feels like they don't live up to the false standards. I'm Happy For You is a decisive attack on the culture of comparison. The book description reads:"Is comparison living hijacking your life?Do you find yourself measuring your value against your friend’s house, body, marriage, resume, paycheck, organic garden, or Pinterest-worthy holiday décor, and coming up lacking? Do your college roommate’s Instagram snapshots bear little resemblance to the scene at your house this morning?Excessive comparison and competition sap our energy and steal our joy. Our friends become our audience and judges, and our kids become part of our brand. Add social media’s constant invitation to post and peruse, and it’s no wonder that we’re left exhausted, discontent, and lonely. Thankfully, there is another way! With refreshing candor and humor, Kay Wyma shares her experiences with comparison living and offers readers the simple remedies that helped her and her family reboot their perspective and discover freedom, authenticity, and joy."This book is divided into 12 chapters, covering keeping up appearances, our obsession with others, coming to terms with the inequalities of life, and more. Kay writes in an easy to read, interesting, and funny style. This is a pretty quick read, but there is a lot of truth to soak in. I feel like this should be required reading for everyone today - personally, I have had to step back from much of social media and I'm a much happier person as a result. Our focus needs to shift on being content with what we have rather than comparing what we have with everyone else we know. We can't find peace in God when we're constantly struggling with discontentment. Kay has a way of cutting to the chase and offering practical solutions and steps to true contentment. I highly recommend this book to everyone struggling in this area.I received a copy of this book from Blogging For Books in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
