Alexander has written and I can honestly say that I have not been disappointed. Germ,Pintz,Yak, and Angus are four young men who are in the street's trying to make money. As you know with that life comes a whole lot of problems. Angus is wild and quick tempered and really has no value for human life. Germs is more laid back and he's the thinker. Yak is young and seem to take on Angus same hot headed attitude. Pintz is all about the money but has another side to him also. This is a great story that will have you laughing but it also tells a tale of what happens when trying to live the fast life. Tragedy strikes and sends these young men in different directions in life. They truly go from boys to men. I really love this story because it has a real life feel to it.

The story was HOOD and at times I had to re-read the sentence to understand it's meaning. That slowed me down and caused me to lose interest in the book but the storyline wouldn't let me give up on it. The ups, downs, highs and lows the 4 boyz go through on their journey to manhood made the story read like non-fiction. The characters became real to me and I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what B.S would happen next. This author has shocked me in more ways than one. I would recommend this book but to an audience that understands the struggle and terminology.

Looking at both the fiction and the fact behind Lewis Carroll's Alice

How is the world of Alice in Wonderland linked to that of the young girl who was the inspiration for this much-loved story? The words written by Charles Dodgson (whose pen-name was Lewis Carroll), an Oxford don, were based on college life, word-play, and, above all, his friendship with the Liddell children—Alice and her sisters, Lorina and Edith. The Dormouse was referring to Lorina Charlotte (LC), Lacie is an anagram of Alice and Tillie was Edith’s nickname. This charming little gift book links the lives of the real Alice, the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, and her friend, the supreme story-teller Charles Dodgson. Among other intrigues, the book explains the significance of the Dodo, the old turtle who "taught us," and the treacle well, all interspersed with quotations from both Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Not a daily devotional guy, but if I was this would be the one I'd get By Stuart Dunn A Year with Mary: Daily Meditations on the Mother of God is the fifth and latest daily devotional available from Saint Benedict Press. The other four are A Year with the Bible, A Year with the Saints, A Year with the Angels, and A Year with the Church Fathers. Like the other volumes in this series, this book has gilded pages and is Premium UltraSoft leather, making it perfect for presentation or gifting. The book itself is blue, which is fitting as that is the color we most associate with Mary. Despite the impressiveness of this book, I was a little skeptical to review this book. I personally am not a fan of the daily devotional, which is strange even to me seeing that I came from a Protestant background. However, I decided to give it a shot. The first thing that I noticed about this book is the numbering of the devotions. Most daily devotionals give you a specific date, i.e., January 1. This book instead labels the devotions as Day 1, Day 2, etc. This means that you don't have to wait until January 1 to start this book, which is the fatal flaw of daily devotionals. Also, in case you are wondering, there is a ribbon bookmark, so you won't have to remember which day you are on. The next thing I noticed about this book was that St. Louis de Montfort and St. Alphonsus Liguori were the bulk of the readings. Now, there is nothing inherently wrong with this. They wrote two of the best books on Mary with de Montfort pinning "True Devotion to Mary," and Liguori "The Glories of Mary." I was just expecting a little more variety in reading selections. The last thing that I noticed was the brief section at the end of every day entitled, "In God's Presence Consider." This makes the devotional more than just something to do everyday, but something which you need to ponder, study, and mediate on. Each day then ends with a closing prayer.Overall, this is an impressive book in both presentation and content. The devotions are each one page long, making them just short enough that you don't feel overwhelmed and just long enough that it requires you to put forth a bit of effort in your journey with and toward God. It didn't turn me into a devotional fan, but it did provide me with some sources and texts on Mary to read that I had not heard of before. For example, St. John of Eudes' work "The Admirable Heart of Mary" is a work that I now want to read after the excerpt I read in this book. So whether you are a Mary novice or an expert on Mary, there is enough wisdom in this book that will enrich your life every time you read it.

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Good Content, BUT... By Amazon Customer I'm not sure how to rate this...the content of the book is exactly what I was looking for. Easy, simple-to-read/understand daily devotionals. Gorgeous feel - the leather cover & the slick (but not too slick), gold trimmed pages. I'd rate this a 5-star if it wasn't for the typo on the bottom of EVERY page. Instead of listing the actual book's title (A Year With Mary), every page lists the title of another book in this series (A Year With The Saints - also by Thigpen). Makes me feel like I ordered a knock-off...like the printer made a typo & Amazon bought them at a discount in order to pass along a cheaper price. Now I wish I would have bought this book at our local Catholic Bookstore.

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful devotional By Customer The quality of this book is outstanding, and considering the cost, it doesn't disappoint. This book has the promise of becoming a family heirloom. The meditations are prayerful and thought provoking. In a world where time for devotions is at a premium, each page allows for concentrated reflection on Mary.

DAWNA MARKOVA Ph. D. and ANGIE MCARTHUR are striving to revolutionize the way parents approach their children’s education. A leading educator and psychologist, Dr. Markova noticed in her decades of work that parents tend to focus on correcting their children’s weaknesses. But in this groundbreaking book based on the world-renowned SmartWired program that she co-founded with Angie, Dawna demonstrates a more effective strategy that centers on building a child’s strengths. This approach not only helps children discover their passion and purpose in life but also instills in them a strong sense of self-worth — which in turn makes them highly motivated to learn. In Dawna’s years as a teacher and with their work with SmartWired, Dawna and Angie came to understand that by recognizing and devel¬oping children’s unique assets, parents can help them succeed not just in school but in life. They cite compelling anecdotes across all age groups and reveal practical strategies: the essential principles of the SmartWired approach to learning, the three kinds of attention the human brain uses, and the five categories of children’s assets. Instead of focusing on what a child can’t do, this book helps recognize and utilize all the ways a child is naturally brilliant.

Excellent toolkit for parents By David Allen I read Smart Parenting Revolution by Dawna Markova a few years ago, and it helped me immeasurably with my two children, both of whom were struggling in public schools. I just picked up I AM Smart and it's a quick, easy read with so many practical tools and different perspectives for understanding my children, and what to do about it to support them in school. Highly recommend for all parents with school-age children.

Buddhism and psychedelic exploration share a common concern: the liberation of the mind. This new edition of Zig Zag Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics has substantially evolved from the landmark anthology that launched the first serious inquiry into the moral, ethical, doctrinal, and transcendental considerations of the intersection of Buddhism and psychedelics. A provocative and thoughtful exploration of inner states and personal transformation, Zig Zag Zen now includes an expanded display of stunning artwork from Android Jones, Sukhi Barber, Randal Roberts, Luke Brown and Ang Tsherin Sherpa, and more work by the pioneering visionary artist Alex Grey. Complementing these new images are original essays by such luminaries as Ralph Metzner and Brad Warner; exciting interviews with James Fadiman, Kokyo Henkel, and Rick Doblin; and a discussion of ayahuasca's unique influence on Zen Buddhism by David Coyote (six new text contributions in total); all of which have been carefully curated to extend the original inquiry of authors Joan Halifax Roshi, Peter Matthiesen, Jack Kornfield, Terence McKenna, Rick Fields and many others. Contemporary seekers of spiritual truth know that both Buddhism and psychedelics are inevitably subjects encountered along the journey. By examining them together, the reader can discover truth about the essence of each.

Amazon.com Review The use of psychedelic drugs is that dark little secret behind the popular origins of Eastern spirituality in America, but if they really open the mind in the same ways meditative experiences do, why shouldn't they be legitimated and brought out into the open? In Allan Hunt Badiner and Alex Grey's Zig Zag Zen authors, artists, priests, and scientists are brought together to discuss this question. Opinions fall on all sides. Ram Dass, for instance, discusses the benefits as well as the limitations. Rick Strassman outlines his work in the first federally funded psychedelic study in two-and-a-half decades. Rick Fields sets the historical scene. China Galland offers a wrenching personal experience. Robert Jesse introduces the varieties of entheogens, drugs that engender mystical states. Lama Surya Das tells of his early drug years. And a roundtable discussion with Ram Dass, Robert Aitken, Richard Baker, and Joan Halifax caps it all.

Interspersed throughout are stunning full-page, full-color images of spiritual art by the likes of Robert Beer, Bernard Maisner, and, of course, Alex Gray. A fascinating look at a complex topic, Zig Zag Zen is worth appreciating and pondering. --Brian Bruya

Review Zig Zag Zen is a treasure trove--inspiritng, frightening, powerful, funny, eye-opeing, and a source of great wisdom on a subject that our society finds endlessly confusing. --Mark Epstein, M.D., author of Thoughts Without a Thinker, Going to Pieces without Falling Apart, and Going on BeingZig Zag Zen shines by its fairness: its authors squarely face the Zig as well as the Zag. That's Zen at its best. --David Steindl-Rast, OSB, author of Gratefulness: The Heart of PrayerZig Zag Zen is a must read for anyone who is concerned about the future of Buddhist practice. --Tenzin Bob Thurman, chair of Indo-Tibetan studies at Columbia University

About the Author Allan Badiner served as the editor of Zig Zag Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics (Chronicle Books, 2002), as well as two other books of collected essays, Dharma Gaia: A Harvest in Buddhism and Ecology (Parallax Press, 19901) and Mindfulness in the Marketplace: Compassionate Responses to Consumerism (Parallax, 2002). Allan is a contributing editor of Tricycle Magazine, and serves on the board of directors of Rainforest Action Network, Threshold Foundation and Project CBD. He has been a student of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh for more than 25 years.Alex Grey is a renowned American artist specializing in spiritual and psychedelic (visionary) art. His work spans a variety of forms including performance art, sculpture and painting. He is a member of the Integral Institute, on the board of advisors for the Center of Cognitive Liberty and Ethics and is Chair of Wisdom University's Sacred Art Department. 35 of 39 people found the following review helpful. The Elephant in the Room By Luminous Numinous It's the elephant in the room. Everyone knows it's there, but few feel comfortable talking about it. It's the relationship between Buddhism and Psychedelic drugs in the West. Zen centers, sanghas, and meditation retreats are littered with former (and current) psychonauts and trippers. You can take one of three tenable stances on the issue: 1.) Psychedelics are intoxicants and are, therefore, antithetical to true Buddhist practice OR; 2.) Psychedelics are not intoxicants at all, but are powerful sacraments that have had an undeniable historical influence on Tantra, Vedanta Hinduism, and Vajrayana Buddhism OR; 3.) you can take the middle path, acknowledging that psychedelics are powerful, but also admitting that they can be dangerous, for they are full of "raja", full of fire that can transform but that can also consume. One of these three views holds the truth. Psychedelics are tools that help Buddhist practice, they are hindrances that obstruct Buddhist practice, OR psychedelics are value-neutral, possessing the power to help or harm depending on context. But anyway you cut it, psychedelics are hardly IRRELEVANT to Buddhist practice. The position that they are is untenable and, frankly, provincial. Why are there so many psychedelic Buddhists and so many Buddhist psychonauts? What do psychedelics and Buddhism have to do with one another? Both psychedelic exploration and Buddhism center around the quest for non-ordinary states of consciousness--states of profound unity, where the subject-object dichotomy--the boundary demarcating self and cosmos dissolves. That's not to say that Buddhism and psychedelics are the same. As Terrence McKenna says in his part of the book, "Buddhism is a theory out of which a practice can be teased; Psychedelics are a practice out of which a theory can be teased. There are those who believe that psychedelics can never produce the same experiences as Buddhist practice. There are those who think that psychedelics provide a much richer and more immediate experience than sitting on a mat and counting the breath could ever hope to. And there are, again, those who think that the advantages and disadvantages of mixing psychedelics and Buddhism need to be weighed on a case by case basis. You'll find all the arguments here in "Zig Zag Zen." Alex Grey is careful to provide as many perspectives as possible. You'll hear from Robert Thurman, the chair of Buddhist Studies at Columbia. You'll hear from Rick Strassman M.D. and from the mystical shaman McKenna, of course. Don't make up your mind until you've carefully considered them all. An open mind is an essential tool on the path to enlightenment. In this particular work, Grey doesn't take a stance on whether drugs can or cannot help you achieve liberation (although if you've ever seen his paintings, it's pretty clear that he has a penchant for tryptamines). Grey's position is that you ought to figure out such matters for yourself. Those who say this book has nothing to do with Buddhism are short-sighted. It has EVERYTHING to do with Buddhism. Buddhism, a religion stripped of metaphysics, is a do-it-yourself theology. No God is posited. No savior has been sent to save you. The Buddha can perhaps show you the way, but as Herman Hesse's epicly brilliant Siddharthaillustrates, it is up to you to follow your own path. "None but ourselves can free our minds."That's what the zig zag means in "Zig Zag Zen." You've got to "roll your own." If you meet the Buddha on the road...kick his ass and take his lunch money.Alex Grey is an as of yet undiscovered national gem. People are going to be marveling at his artwork and contemplating his philosophical musings for millenia to come. I believe, in the end, that Grey's contributions to the Perrenial Philosophy and to the ontology of art will be as historically significant as his contributions painting. Showing people the subtle energies and subtle bodies that make up the self, illustrating the soul that arises just as assuredly from mind as mind does from life and life does from matter, Grey is one of the most convincing advocates for the existence of Spirit in these troubled and turbulent times. He may just be the brightest guy on the planet.Buy the book!

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Lucid and insightful By Bud Valley This book is one of the most comprehensive and lucid treatments of the topic of Buddhism and psychedelics. I came away from it with a much better understanding of how the two might be reconciled in the context of a "serious" spiritual practice. What struck me most was the extreme lucidity and potency of each of the essays. There were a few I skipped over, but for the most part I was very impressed with the eloquence and insight offered by each contributor. If you are at all interested in Buddhism, psychedelics, or both, this book is great food for thought. Highly recommended.

Ancient folklore and modern myth come together in these stories by author Craig Laurance Gidney. Here are found the struggles of a medieval Japanese monk seduced by a mischievous fairy, and a young slave who finds mystery deep within the briar patch of an antebellum plantation. Gidney offers a gay teen obsessed with his patron saint, Lena Horne, and, in the title story, an ailing tourist seeks escape at a distant shore but never reckons on encountering an African sea god. Rich, poetic, dark and disturbing, these are distinctive tales not soon forgotten. A finalist for the Lambda Literary Award for Best Gay Fantasy/Horror/Science Fiction!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Can't wait for my copy to arrive By M. Kirshner I was lucky enough to catch a public reading by the author a few nights ago, and the book promises to live up to its name. The story he read was full of vivid imagery, beneath which seemed to lurk both the cold starkness of reality and a twist of sly humor. I imagine that I will feel swallowed up in these stories ... as soon as my copy arrives!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a vivid rainbow of promise By Thomas Cardamone Anyone who caught Kara Walker's retrospective at the Whitney was immediately challenged to think about race and art. Her surreal silhouettes carved meaning out of every room. Regardless if the viewer came away with a positive or negative impression, it was obvious that existing concepts had been broken, challenged, expanded and, as someone who was blown away by the show, I would add rightfully so. I discovered the same powerful intonations within Craig Gidney's collection, Sea, Swallow Me and other stories. In the opening tale, The Safety of Thorns, the trappings of the plantation meld into the realm of myth and discovery with strong poetic imagery, yet the characters rise from up off the page with a stark realism. A slave boy is given a powerful elixir by a devil, but still has to find the strength he needs to grapple with reality from within. Equally impressive stories follow. It would be easy for the casual reader/reviewer to exclaim delight at discovering a gay black writer introducing gay black characters into the otherwise lamely heterosexual elf-white worlds of fantasy, but I found the author's pallet much more assured than that; like Walker, his art is not only arresting, subversive and naturally erotic, it stretches boundaries and genuinely puts the speculative back in speculative fiction. Importantly, the stories are as engaging as challenging; no one will close the book thinking they've been slipped a thesis a' la latter-day Delaney. The three best stories, the aforementioned The Safety of Thorns, the titular Sea, Swallow Me, and A Bird of Ice, respectively open, support the middle, and (nearly) close the book. Sea, Swallow Me allows the reader to swim within some spectacular writing and nearly drown in a feeling of otherness. A Bird of Ice takes place within the snowy confines of an ancient Japanese monastery. A young monk is courted by a member of the fairy folk and ends up confronting much more than the homoerotic awakenings of adolescence. Not that the remaining stories are by any means filler. The few pieces I suspected of being early work still possessed all of the strengths exhibited in the best work. All offered a diversity of setting and theme, making the book one of constant exploration. In fact, when not paying close enough attention while reading the story Strange Alphabets, I thought I'd caught the author making that obnoxious freshman blunder of naming a character after a beloved writer: Rimbaud. I was genuinely thrilled to realize my mistake as the story concerns the train-bound sexual (and quite sticky at that) adventures of the actual poet, a nice historical twist, which, like the exceptionally short Magpie Sisters, keeps the book off-balance. Meaning it surprises. This is not your comfortable Renaissance Fair of modern fantasy and that's a good thing. Hell, it's startlingly refreshing.Fantasy is seriously lacking in gay fiction written by gay men. Funny, that in writing this review I was initially hesitant to bring up race, for fear that by implication I would give potential readers the impression that in some way the polemic (as if that's somehow inherent to discussions of equality) shapes or invades these stories. Not so. The artist Kara Walker deftly works in black and white with obvious, evocative success. Craig Gidney wields a vivid rainbow of promise.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Sea, Swallow Me and Other Stories by Craig Laurance Gidney By Elisa This is really a strange anthology and not a romance at all; some of the characters are gay men, both modern or myth or figures from the past, but it's not them being gay that linked all the story, it's more the unexpected and the legend, the faith and the myth mixed together. The Safety of Thorns: Israel is a slave boy who lives in a plantation; he is very young (don't know exactly the age but he is still working little jobs around, so I believe he is nothing more than a child). One day, near the briar patch he sees a strange man. Israel believes him to be the Devil, even if the man reassures him that it's not true. But from that moment on, Israel's life is no more the same and terrible things happen around him. Maybe the man was not the devil, but probably he opens Israel's eyes to who he is and where he stays, and that was worst than a damnation.Etiolate: Oliver is an African American artist; as an artist, with an artist's eyes, he likes the pretty thing, above all the pretty boys. But Oliver is not an handsome man and he is not even wealthy and famous, and so the pretty boys don't like him. One more night he sees the reject in the eyes of one of that boys, and probably his desire is so strong that he unveal something terrible, a curse or similar... or maybe he only frees his true self, one who sees the beauty also in the horror of death. Her Spirit Hovering: Howard was a young man with big dreams of becoming a famous and adored artist. He had the skills, he was good, but he had also a overbearing mother who always crushed his dreams. Not only that she also managed to ruin every important relationship Howard had, first with Kamela, a young Indian girl he met at school (and being of a different culture was not good for his mother) and then with Ned, a talented man he lived with (and obviously being a man was not good for his mother). Now his mother is passed away, and Ned is probably thinking that he know can start living, but grudge and regret are bigger than the wish to start, and the weight of his presence is almost as present as when she was alive. But it's true that it's all his mother's fault, or maybe it's Howard that doesn't have the courage to take his life in his hands?Come Join Me: Aime is a young boy with a gift, he can see the spirits of his dead relatives. But only his grandmother thinks at that like a gift, all the others, his mother first, want to cure him. Will Aime learn to live with his spirit friends, or will he join them?Sea, Swallow Me: Jed has always searched for something, someone bigger than life. And maybe he finally meets him in a seaside village, in the deep of the sea.Circus Boy Without a Safety Net: C.B. is a boy with a wonderful voice and a love for the old stars, in particular Lena Horne. When he was young his parents supported his dream allowing him to dream day and night about his favorite star, but when he became a young man, a teen, and this passion still was wih him, they feared him being gay and try to repress his dreams. He was a good singer, but he couldn't be himself in the choir of the church. When C.B. finally will leave home and enter the unknown world of New York, so far and strange in comparison to his little town, will he be finally free?Strange Alphabets: in this short story the author romances a moment in the life of Arthur Rimbaud, when he first left his family home and his mother to find his true self in the big and alluring Paris. Arthur will learn that being free it is not always so good, and great pain will wait him, but the lure of poetry and the extasy of flesh is too strong to resist.Magpie Sisters: a little scene on a little thief girl who is drawn by shiny little thing.A Bird of Ice: Ryuichi is a Japanese monk; he lives in a peaceful monastery along a lake and one day he "saves" a swan which is drowning. Despite the warning of his brother, he takes care of the animal, and he is strangely attracted but it. And when the animal leaves, it marks Ryuichi with a kiss / bite. From that moment on Ryuichi is no more the same and he will have to see deeply inside himself to understand what he wants and who he is.Catch Him by the Toe: Sambo is an African tamer and Simba is his beautiful Asian tiger; Sambo and Simba, Africa and Asia, man and animal, they are both strange and beautiful. Maybe too strange and beautiful for the little American town of Azalea, which can't see beyond its own fear of what is unknown and extraordinaire. As I said, the anthology is not simple, but it's mesmerizing. It's full of color and flavor, an intoxicating mix that catches you while reading and lingers afterward. All the tales are mostly sad, but not without hope; the romance is not the target of the characters and so it's not even the final point of the stories; they are almost all self discovery journey, and the ending point of the journey not always is a light and beautiful paradise.

They remind me of the best and kookiest things about the happiest marriages I've seen. They make me smile and laugh - and occasionally howl with glee at a reminder of some of the more adorable foibles of my favorite couples.

All that nagging. Worst part is it's endless. Megan has no mute button and God knows her husband of forty years, Emmett would rejoice if she came with one.Emmett is more of the laid back, chilled dad, husband and grandpa. He keeps Megan grounded and stops her from popping a vein. After counting down the time, all 8655 minutes, he is retired, and does some pretty important stuff while enjoying his days at home. Here is just a few of his antics: creating a raincoat for his granddaughter out of duct tape, or as the five year old calls it, 'duck tape'. His grocery shopping mission with his wife. Let's just say it cost them a carton of heavy cream. And I can't forget the time he put on his chef hat and decided to bake a cake for Megan. How sweet. The thought anyway. As for the cake......burn baby burn comes to mind.I lived for the interactions between these two characters. However, I wished I got to see how the pranks played out. God knows I wanted to be there when Emmett stuffed his face with cookies and sweet toothpaste. Darn. The story also introduces us to their daughter and two grandchildren. To clear the record, it wasn't tears in my eyes during the moment when they watched the video of Paul, husband and father who perished in a vehicle accident. It was.......sweat. Yeah, that's what it was. During the breezy night, somehow, I can't and won't explain, a few beads of sweat formed on my forehead, and casually rolled in my eyes. Sounds plausible enough. So you see they weren't tears people.Laughs after laughs kept rolling out. Too bad I chose to read it at night..... I was being shushed and all. Try as I might (didn't try much) I couldn't suppress the laughs. The jokes in my opinions didn't seem forced and managed to effortlessly flow out of the mouths of the characters. Short and entertaining to the very end. I loved the read so til. Happy reading!-Chantol Aspinall

By Reviews on Amazon This book is simply stunning and inspirational! Whether you are new to or thinking about starting yoga (and are looking for a background rather than a guide, more on that later) , have been practicing for some time or are a committed Yogi; this book will have something for you!To begin with this is a large, well written and simply stunning book! Filled with amazing imagery of stunning scenery from around the world, yoga poses and people simply being in the moment; it is worth it just for the quality and depth of the photography. But, if course, this goes far beyond that! This book was authored by -among others, Jeff Krasno - the Cofounder of the Wanderlust Festivals. As stated in the introduction "The dictionary describes wanderlust as an innate desire to travel"; and with that "Wanderlust is a base camp for ideas and practices from master teachers, provocative thinkers, mind/body experts, cutting edge artists and conscious business leaders that set the coordinates for your journey" , helping you "cultivate your own best self, to find your true north". This culture and with it the guiding principles in this book are a great tool in helping you become the best that you can be. As stated, it will take you from simple daily practices to a pathway to becoming a leader in this world; but it is also pointed out that this is a life long journey and this book just "gets you out of the harbor. You must skull ahead"So what is this book? It is comprised 8 chapters loaded with yoga, recipes, advice for living well, written exercises (with areas of the book that you can write in as you work through those exercises), stories , quotes, learning. It really is a 360 approach.Chapter one is finding your practice with detailed information about yoga, meditation, daily intentions. There is a thirty day challenge centered around yamas (moral principles) and niyamas (observances). A spot to begin journaling, and this is a pathway to get started.Chapter two is finding your direction; thinking about what path you want and how that can help us get to where we want to be in life and includes a guide to breathing, or rather being present with the breath. There is a interesting guide to Hindi deities; an exercise in thinking about your future self and creating a vision board.Chapter three: Find your core and includes being truthful ( I chuckled a little at the exercise of documenting and owning lies; as I will admit to resorting to white lies to get out of things or avoid hurting people which is never a great idea in the long run.) There is a also a really great guide to hand and foot acupuncture - Sujok, which I found fascinating! It is in chapter three that we also find the first photography of yoga poses tied into chakras and those new to yoga might want to be aware that in the previous two chapters, the routines are illustrated via stick figures, so those new to practicing will likely have a hard time following along!Chapter 4 is find your heart , learning to love yourself then others, including guides to places you can go to find solitude or adventure and a written exercise looking at things, people and places that you love. Chapter 5 centers around community looking at everything from volunteering to community supported agriculture ; and exploring famous faces and their yoga exploration.Chapter 6 I really love - finding your creative spark; which I believe we all have, but it can often be suppressed as we work , work , work then end our day exhausted as we try and keep up with life and others; as opposed to finding what makes us happy. Also, side note, as a chocolate lover, I was happy to see a section on "yoga and chocolate". Chapter 7 is finding your center and looks at building an alter as your own sacred space . Also dealing with stress and in particular the cortisol that is making the nation, fat, inflamed, chronically ill and leads to premature aging with tips to "rehab cortisol and get reentered".Finally chapter 8: finding your true north full of shared stories; putting the onus for change on you , the reader, being successful and accordingly., just like we do at the end of yoga, finishing with a reflection on Savasana , Om and Namaste. This book will live on my nightstand for some time to come as I will want to look at it, read it and refer to it again and again. I simply love the message, the challenges, the thoughts, and the stunning, amazing pictures! As noted earlier, this is a guide for discovering your best self, encompassing amongst other things, yoga ; so those new to the practice, might want to note, this is not a guide how to do yoga, but the base for becoming a new you and exploring the practice some more. Those familiar with yoga will love this and I really feel in this rat race we all live, in , slowing down and becoming our best selves is a mantra we can all live by!

Pruitt Note, half the photos including the cover are taken by my cousin Sasha Juliard, so I'm biased. Also many of the pictures are of his girlfriend Nicole who is one of the authors. That being said this is a beautifully designed book that combines yoga poses, philosophy, recipes and many scenic gorgeous photos in a coffee table book level book, with heavyweight paper pages. I think it is a good value, and if you subscribe to the Wanderlust movement or know someone who does it would be a good gift for yourself or that friend of yours.

It is full of stunning images, recipes, yoga sequences, and lots of helpful texts about how to better yourself and your practice. I have had this book for about a week and I feel that I have learned so much about myself through the journaling prompts, my practice through the texts, and so much history and understanding about all aspects of yoga practice. I wish I could put into words how important this book is to me. It is a book I will constantly reference in the future--not just a book that will constantly sit on a shelf. My heart is full and the wanderlust of my soul is so very happy that this book exists. Thank you so much for publishing/printing/creating it. It's something every yogi new or old should have in their library.

Not sure why there are so very many books that feature this ridiculous plot device. It's demeaning and stupid. The books that portray a handsome billionaire dropping out of the sky and suddenly wanting to be your baby's daddy OR suddenly falling in love with you after you get pregnant in a one-night stand with him - these plots send the wrong message to the world about young, smart black women. So please stop. Kids don't belong anywhere near steamy, escapist fiction - these kinds of books are what you read to block out all of those relentless parenting responsibilities for a just a little while.

Very few laypeople know the story of how the church received the New Testament Scriptures. Christians looking into this important topic for the first time are quickly confronted with alarming claims from critical scholars. Some offer accusations that most New Testament books were written late, forged under the apostle’s names, went through many revisions and were then thrust upon the church through a questionable process four centuries after Christ. This view is not consistent with the church’s long-held belief in inspiration, infallibility and inerrancy. In contrast this short, easy-to-read book attempts to show that an early New Testament canon is consistent with a high view of Scripture. Evidence is given showing that the formation of the canon would have been a perfectly natural occurrence in the early church. This evidence is based on the fact that Jesus taught the coming of further revelation after his ascension through the apostles he commissioned. These apostles were confirmed through miracles, were aware of their God-given authority, and imposed their writings on the church. These writings were then received by men of God who recognized their divine origin (inspiration). There is finally an overview of events leading up to the formal ratification of the canon in the fourth century. It is hoped that laypeople will recognize that the central core of the New Testament was already well established after the books were written. And by this, Christians can be all the more confident that the New Testament Scriptures before them today is inspired, infallible and without error.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. shows canon not created by a church council but tradition from the Apostles By Mary C. Erikson very good, shows list of books taken as authoritative by various Church Fathers.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A bit more theological and less secular than my tastes. By Darin R. Swan Although not completed yet, I have a good "feel" for the book at this point. I would prefer my books on historicity/dating be more academic and less theological and this book does not find the balance I'd prefer. Falling more on the conservative side and a bit stronger on theology than I'd prefer, it is still a good book worthy of exploration. However, I'd find a counterpoint book more focused on historicity in support of its theses. For the authors' efforts, I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars; however, if there was a 2.5 rating, this is probably where it should actually fall. Not groundbreaking and a bit conservative theologically, versus a more broad secular/academic view.

I felt Codie's character was immature, gullible and weak. I was hoping that would change, at some point. I was hoping that she would figure out that since Scott couldn't afford for his wife to find out about his baby and he had never legally acknowledged paternity; Codie actually held all the power. Why would she move into a house and accept a car; without insisting they both be in her name? That's just dumb. And why wouldn't she use the opportunity of being his paid mistress, to at least continue her education or take vocational training? Short-sighted, to say the least. And how does her 2-yo disappear from the home and she "assumes", his father must have snuck in and snatched him. No real mother would sit around and gamble on their child's safety like that. They would call the police, because their toddler has just been abducted from their home! Just craziness. And the Hugo storyline is pathetic. He's arrested for hitting Scott; when Scott had initiated the physical altercation by slapping and pushing him. Codie was a witness to the altercation. Why would police only arrest Hugo? Unrealistic.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Frustrated By purplegal30 I really don't know where to begin with this story. It was truly one of the most frustrating books I have ever read! Basically Codie the main female character is a "side chick" who falls in love with Scott a married man and believes he's going to leave his wife for her. Well surprise side chick gets pregnant & Scott wants her to "get rid of it". When she doesn't he leaves her. So fast forward 2yrs & although she's still in love with this jerk she moves on, lands a job and starts showing interest in another man named Hugo. Well cutting story short Scott comes back into her life & the story nosedives from there. Codie starts acting like a complete idiot, Scott tells her he bought a house & car for her and is divorcing his wife. He also turned Codie against Hugo which really didn't take much doing. Now not only did Codie not ask for some kind of proof of Scott's divorce, this dummy quits her job and moves into the house Scott bought but is not living there himself! Then when the situation once again blows up in her face, she starts "looking" for a way out of the relationship but doesn't want to move out of HIS house and wants to wait until she finds a job. Ok if a man that told me to first get rid of my kid, then leaves my life for 2yrs, comes back blackmails me the last thing I'm going to do is stay in his house!! I got so frustrated with this book I just skipped pages. Anyway Codie is an idiot who somehow is written to be a victim but is really a side chick borderline gold digger, Scott just a true jerk, Hugh a firefighter pushover. Really the only tolerable character was Alba the sister, Will the little boy, and Madeline the wife.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I really loved the story By Gwen Cage I really loved the story. Scott was a manipulative jerk and should have been kicked to the curb when they became pregnant and insisted that she have an abortion say he would go with her and then not show up. The hurt she endured. There is not that much love in the world for a low life like that. Unfortunately Codie thought she loved him and he took her through too many changes for me but she had to learn about him for herself. Thank goodness for her sister Alba and her neighbor and friend Shantay. Along comes a decent guy who is a fireman and he falls in love with her and her son Will. She almost lost him because Scott was brain washing her and she fell for his bullsh.... The story started off as a typical love affair with a married man who promises to divorce his wife and marry her.....sure!!!!!! but the plot thickens and turns out to be a really good read.
