This sentence sums up the book, MY TIME TO SHINE. Dee, Junie, and Black are raised in a single parent home without the creature comforts that so many Americans take for granted. The brothers are tired of it. They want big cars, palatial houses, lots of jewelry, clothes and plenty of fine women and they make it their business to get those things. Education doesn't seem the way to go because it takes too long so they go the way of the streets. All three brothers know how dangerous it is, but do they really appreciate it?In their own way, they are kind and considerate. They take care of their mother and auntie, who is also a single parent, first and then they deck themselves out. First come the cars, the clothes, the jewelry and then the houses. The women, looking for a way out themselves, aren't far behind. They know players when they see them and they latch on in spite of the treatment they receive from the men. They are referred to as hoes, bitches and hookers - no matter what their station is in life. Beatings are regular and expected. But the money is too good for them to leave.Ed McNair has opened a doorway into a life many of us would have no way of knowing about unless someone told us. The book is an education about how poverty can force strange choices. I still have difficulty accepting murder, mutilation and anything-for-a-dollar as a way of life but he has created a page-turner that is hard to put down.Reviewed by alice Holmanof The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. best street novel By ann757 i loved the author's attention to detail, it pulls you in and makes you feel like you know the characters personally. once the story started to take off, i couldn't put the book down, especially when it came to dee and his situations. you'll love this book, and i hear the author's next book is even better.

It tells the story of Black through his brother Dee and their struggle, dreams and desires, rise in the drug game and the "perks" and blood that comes with it and then the heart aches it eventually bring to those that they love.It was so real that you could feel the emotions of it. I could picture the scenes, that is how vivid McNair writing is in this book. Cannot wait to read more in Black Reign.

About the Author ?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

The reviewer below thinks this is Balzac. It's Zola of course and the Pastore edition is faithfully updated without it being absurdly modernist.Why audible.com says its "public domain" is anyone's guess. It is not. If you like your books read to you--and most readers do especially if they're in a car, this is terrific.

I thought it was a great story told so well. However, it's a bit dark for my taste and not something I would have chosen.The author wove an incredible tale and so many times I wanted to cry or slap someone.I may not ever read it again, but I am glad I read it. I recommend you read it at least once.

By Anonymous Kate Winslet is a wonderful narrator, with her clear, soothing, and well-paced delivery, and her skilled character acting giving life and personalities to the pathetic characters of Zola's dark realist novel. The twisted plot revolves around human despair, lamentable desire, the rawness of passion, and the darkest strains of human psyche. While the theme and plot is simple and close, it is nonetheless compelling: Zola's language flows beautifully in Winslet's narration, and the dark psychology is not without its pessimistic depth. I wish Ms. Winslet could read all my books to me!

Makes clear what happened to Christ's apostles and church By dan young What I liked:This book keeps it simple but gives an abundance of scripture and historical reference. You know a short way into this read that THIS author actually studied and didn't just take anyone's word for it. You also are able to see WHAT HAPPENED to Christianity, how it got so big and so divided. I appreciated that a lot. I also enjoyed the study into the history of Paul, Simon, and where the early apostles and church members went after Christ's death.What I didn't like:It is clear that a great deal of work was invested in the research behind this book. More graphs and timelines or a supporting webpage with an interactive timeline like a museum would have would have been nice additions. I'm visual, and this book makes clear to me the progress of Christ's little flock down through history but more visuals would further enrich the experience of this read.Conclusion:This book makes it plain that if you want Christ's faith then you have to study and find where He is working today. He lived and taught and established a very different gospel and church than what has become popular Christianity. You really have to read your bible, pray and look to find God's truth. This book is a great help in that direction.This was a great read.

Adams For my review (published in a peer-reviewed journal), see http://wp.me/p5Tjr9-69Q.This is a sweeping treatment of navigating the difficulties of engaging a religiously pluralistic culture and offers sage and compassionate advice from one of the leading Christian thinkers today. His special treatment of Buddhism is engaging and should be carefully considered by all. Whether believer, nonbeliever, or none, this book engages all readership with careful research and deserves a wide audience.

Matichuk There is an increasing awareness of religious diversity in the West due to globalization. Harold Netland, professor of philosophy of religion and intercultural studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School is someone with keen insights into the implications of the modern religious climate for those of us with Christian commitments. In Christianity & Religious Diversity he untangles issues facing Christians today.Netland states that this is not an introduction to religion, but "a selective treatment of issues related to religious diversity and Christian commitment" (xi). He divides his exploration of the topic in two parts. In part one, he explores the nature of religion in the modern, globalizing world. In part two, Netland discusses 'Christian Commitments in a Pluralistic world.' Part one describes the lay of the land, and part two is designed to help Christian religious philosophers, missionaries and apologists navigate it.Part one begins with Netland recounting recent academic debates about the nature of religion, its definition and its relationship to culture. He observes several important features of our contemporary religious climate: (1) a direct link between a religion, worldview or culture cannot be assumed; (2) religion and culture cannot be reduced into each other; (3) religions and cultures are fluid and change overtime; (4) People have already had multiple cultural identities, and increasingly people have multiple religious identities too (35-39). Chapter two explores the way that modernization and globalization have changed religious commitments by making choices available while simultaneously eroding our epidemiological certainty. Chapter three examines Buddhism and the way it has adapted with modernism and globalization. Chapter four shows how Jesus Christ has been adopted by many different religious and cultural traditions. Examples include the Hindu Renaissance (such as Mahatma Gandhi's use of Jesus), John Hick's pluralism and Shusaku Endo's novels.Chapters five through seven of part two deal with the problem of making Christian truth claims in a pluralist age. Chapter five answers the question, "Can All Religions Be True?" [Spoiler Alert: No]. Chapter six explores the notion of 'Christianity as the One True Religion' and chapter seven talks about the reasons for belief in a diverse age. Netland, earned his doctorate under John Hicks and he unpacks many of the the problems with Hicks pluralism. Netland's final chapter forms a conclusion to these essays. Netland urges missionaries, apologists and evangelists to both remain faithful disciples of Jesus and to be good neighbors, respectful in dialogue with those in other faith traditions.Netland is brilliant at synthesizing the literature from diverse disciplines such as philosophy of religion, missiology, sociology, economics, biblical studies, and theology. He offers a comprehensive analysis of our post-colonial, global religious landscape. Anyone interested in the effects of Globalization on religion will find this book informative. Netland's prose is careful and circumspect and what I appreciated most was his descriptions of religious trends. This will be most useful for apologists and students. I can't say enough good things about this book and recommend it most highly. It is many things: Part etymology -- exploring the definitions and conceptual content of the difficult-to-define-words "religion", "culture" and "worldview". Part cultural history -- outlining the debates over "secularization" and tracing the ways European and various Asian cultures have responded to major shifts. Part philosophy of religion -- a serious, honest, and fruitful engagement with several major worldviews and thinkers. Part epistemology -- navigating the questions of how to engage in reasoned persuasion in our current context. Part discipleship manual -- faithfully situating the follower of Jesus in the midst of pluralism (and the plurality of views about pluralism). On top of that, his familiarity with the bewildering array of secondary literature in all these areas is impressive. Of course, this will not be the last word on this vital topic, but it is a substantial and fitly written one nonetheless.

By Gaele Romance is sweeter the second time around, especially when the mercenary heroine finally realizes what is important in life, and grows up a bit, at 40.I’ve read a few of these stories, Shelly Ellis builds amazing characters that are sure to make you love or hate them equally. This storyline is further laden with conflict as all of the sisters have been raised with an eye to the ‘bottom line’, not the character or kindness of the men they target. While I won’t moralize on the wrongness of that trait, I will say that making me enjoy a book despite that major deficit as I enter the story is a testament to the writing.Cynthia is a 40 something divorced woman, with a 19 year old daughter. Time is coming for her to find her next meal ticket, and goes to some fairly outlandish steps to set up her conquest. But, it all goes horribly wrong when her first real love from high school reappears in her life, seemingly still inappropriate for her ‘black card’ dreams.Korey is also divorced with a 19 year old son, but he’s worked hard to get what he has: a chain of successful auto repair shops, but he still prefers simple and honest to Cynthia’s snobby ways. He’s never been able to get her out of his head though, and these two have TONS of baggage and bad feelings to get past. And they have to get past them quickly – since their kids have eloped to Vegas to marry, against everyone’s wishes.What Ellis does with great style is bring us into their history and present, as they battle and make up – with Cynthia’s dramatic overreactions and Korey’s doing his best to NOT lose his temper. Their relationship from anger and avoidance to speaking terms, and more.We also get a chance to check in on the sisters: Stephanie, Lauren and Dawn and see what a bit of maturity and ignoring the “gold digger rules’ has actually done for their own lives. Okay By Book Referees Cynthia Gibbons and her sisters are well-known around town as ‘gold diggers.’ What do you expect when their mother laid out the rules to gold digging and landing a rich man.? The problem is Cynthia’s daughter refuses to adhere to the rule book. She’d rather follow her heart, and that’s exactly what she does when runs off to elope. As soon as Cynthia finds out that her daughter ran off to Vegas to get married she is determined to stop the wedding. The question though is what is the real reason that Cynthia is hell-bent on stopping the nuptials? Will she be able to stop the wedding in enough time?The Sisters:Lauren is married to Cristano, and she is deeply in love with him. The problem is with Cristano running for mayor she is worried that her past will affect his chances of winning. Stephanie is engaged to private detective Keith Hendricks. Unfortunately Cynthia feels like Keith is beneath her sister since she feels like Keith doesn’t make enough money to support the luxuries her sister is used to. Meanwhile, Dawn has fallen head over heels for a younger man, Xavier. Xavier wants kids, and would like for Dawn to have his children, but she’s not quite sure because of her age. Will Cynthia let go and let love in or will she still be on the quest for her next rich husband?The Best She Ever Had by Shelly Ellis was the 4th installment in A Gibbons Gold Digger series. Although the story mainly centers around the main character Cynthia and the fact that her daughter has run off to elope, there is a few other storylines going on within the story. The story moved slowly, but mainly because it was very repetitive. At times, it felt like the story was just going on in circles. After she finds her daughter, the story picks up some and then picks up a steady pace then abruptly fast forwards a year. To make matters worse, the thing that should have made me drop my mouth in shock, only aggravated me. I easily figured out early on in the story how it the story was going to play out. By Affaire de Coeur The Best She Ever Had is a humorous, entertainingly insightful guide on how NOT to live your life. Cynthia is little hard to warm up to, while, at the same time, the reader will feel sorry for her. Korey is rightfully very uptight with her and her shenanigans, but when they have to team up to find their kids, they discover things about each other that will pull at the readers’ heartstrings. And the secondary plotlines of her happily married sisters are a nice foil to Cynthia’s bitterness. It is not often that the characters in a diverse romance are academics. The author does a good job of weaving in campus issues with a burgeoning taboo relationship. So, in addition to the push and pull of the attraction between the protagonists, you have issues surrounding change when a new campus leader takes over, mini fiefdoms on campus, and rogue faculty. Throw in a crazy ex boyfriend with his own secrets and family dynamics and you have a great story.You may be taken aback by the manner in which this relationship develops because Mr. College President assumes a lot of risk, but just go with it. The outcome will satisfy you.

By Romance Novels in Color Love Under Attack (FRCC Book 1) by Xyla Turner, if you can sift through all the gratuitous sex scenes, was actually not a bad book. As an avid reader of most genres of books from erotic to children’s, I like a sex scene just as much as the next person, but not when I feel it interferes with the plot. I chose to try and ignore those scenes and focus on the actual plot of the book, but want all readers to be aware that they are a major part of this read.Imara Winters has been an adjunct professor at Far Rockaway Community College for three years. She is loved by her students and her students meet academic success in her classes. In arrives Dr. T.R. Matthews, new college president, who has been brought on board to help revive the college. One of his major revival plans is to get rid of adjunct professors and replace them with more stable, long term professors. As you can see by this set up, this puts Imara and T.R. on a direct collision course. In real life, Imara would have been fired after her first, extremely rude encounter with the college president, but since this is a story, the plot thickens even more. T.R. initiates an intimate relationship with Imara, that she does not rebuff, all while claiming to hate the man and what he is doing to the college.The author does a great job delving into the issues that make Imara act the way she does personally and professionally. I must say that the subplots in this book, with Doran, Tee, Liz and T.R.’s family, saved a book that otherwise I would have stopped reading halfway through. I truly hope the next installment in this series lends itself more to this author depending upon what is obviously great writing ability and less on sensationalized sex scenes.-Reviewed by Selina

Finally a novel that isn't about drug dealers, addicts or the uneducated! It had two professional African Americans who I didn't need an urban dictionary to understand. The sex scenes were very explicit but pretty much worked and weren't as vulgar as I have seen in some other novels. Did I mention they were hot as well?The fact that this is part of a series but was a stand alone was a big plus for me as I hate it when books end abruptly without solving anything or satisfying the reader enough for them to want to buy the next installment. There were a few editing errors but not enough to distract me from the whole story. All in all I very much enjoyed Ms Turner's newest release.

This commentary to the Ethics adds much interesting information By Israel Drazin Jews and non-Jews have recognized the practical wisdom of many of the sayings in Pirkei Avot, “The Ethics of the Fathers,” and many Jews can quote its teachings from memory. Jews considered the Ethics of the Fathers so significant that many excellent commentaries have been written on the Ethics and the custom arose to read one chapter a week during the summer months.But this Koren volume is unique in half a dozen ways that make it special. The Hebrew script and English translation are broken down, as is usual in Koren books, into easy to read phrases with excellent print. The translation of the six chapters by Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks is in modern English, with Rabbi Sacks sometimes paraphrasing the Hebrew text when it makes more sense to do so rather than presenting an awkward literal English translation. Rabbi Marc D. Angel has given a very learned introduction in which he points out, among much else, that “Great sages in ancient civilizations have provided teachings to help guide humanity to harmonious, happy, and wise lives. Among the wisest and most influential teachers were those of ancient Israel.”Rabbi Angel offers explanation of all of the wise ancient sayings, presenting both traditional commentaries as well as learned thoughts by others, Jews and non-Jews, which add depth to the teachings of the fathers. He supplements the wise lessons of the ancients with modern information such as the following. An Israeli Nobel Prize winner described the “illusion of validity”: people tend to think their judgments are valid even when based simply on first impressions or relatively short observations and are often badly mistaken. A psychiatrist wrote that “We establish irrational ideals of the ‘real’ man and the ‘right kind’ of woman, which not only separates us more and more from our genuine potentialities, but in the long run also lead us into self-destructiveness.” The philosopher of the late first and early second century CE, Epictetus, warned “Know you not that a good man does nothing for appearance sake but for the sake of having done right.” An American scientist observed: “One human trait, urging us by our nature, is the drive to be useful.”Rabbi Angel adds historical information. He tells how there are sayings of nineteen sages who lived prior to the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE; sixteen who flourished from 70 through the early second century when Israel was under the harsh dominion of Rome; fourteen between the early second century through the Bar Kokhba rebellion against Rome in 132-135; eleven sages following the rebellion through the late second century; and eight scholars who lived between the late second century through the early third century; sixty eight wise men in all.The book is filled with a wealth of other information, inspiring stories, and the results of psychological experiments. For example: the psychologist Erich Fromm noted that most people fail in life because they are unable to make a decision when they come to metaphorical forks in the road; people are so impressed by being watched that when a picture of two eyes is painted on an honor box to pay for beverages, people paid more than twice as much for their drinks; nations perish when its people forget where they came from.In short, while other commentaries on Pirkei Avot have much to offer, this volume will teach readers very much in an interesting, thought-provoking, and enjoyable manner.

He was rich but his attitude was straight out of a guide on how to be nice. He was really genuine but Cherise was having a hard time believign because of her relationship with her ex. She was really hurt and thought men just weren't worth the effort. UNTIL Jasper. Jasper courted her the old fashioned way with flowers and dates. She started to have feelings for him and after that it was on. She decided to give him a chance. I also loved her brother and best friend Mona in this book. They were great side characters.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. enjoyable By Cherish J I enjoyed reading this book. A lot of secrets were exposed. Devina is one crazy nut that can't no for an answer. There were some parts that didn't seem realistic but it quickly picked up. The only thing I didn't care for was the long flashbacks. Overall, it is a great read and you will not be disappointed.

Nina and Marcus both have secrets that could come back to haunt them. They are a few days from getting married, and trying to contain their lustful desires for each other. They both agreed not to have sex until after the wedding. This book has a little bit of everything, including Marcus' best friend and his mother. This is definitely a must read.

Wow By Tonya Greene I couldn't put this book down I loved Nina and Marcus together Devine was crazy I also loved Rochelle and Maxwell at one point I thought Devine was really going to succeed, Jeremy was a good dude and Miss DAVIS was a mess the author really did a great job and I will be looking forward to reading more of her work
