The election of Pope Francis represents not only a great historical event, but also a key moment for understanding the direction of the Catholic Church. In this illuminating work, Massimo Faggioli offers his unique insight into the pontificate of Pope Francis. This is not a biography of Pope Francis, nor a complete chronicle of the early months of his pontificate. It is, rather, an attempt to capture some special moments and some key issues at the heart of the transition from Pope Benedict XVI to Francis, with the intuition that this unexpected transition how it is carried out, and what it has given rise to reveals something which is not only a special Catholic event, but also a particular historical moment in a tradition in flux: a tradition that touches the contemporary world far beyond the borders of Rome and Roman Catholicism.

In recent decades, the church and academy have witnessed intense debates concerning the concept of penal substitution to describe Christ's atoning sacrifice. Some claim it promotes violence, glorifies suffering and death, and amounts to divine child abuse. Others argue it plays a pivotal role in classical Christian doctrine. Here world-renowned New Testament scholar Simon Gathercole offers an exegetical and historical defense of the traditional substitutionary view of the atonement. He provides critical analyses of various interpretations of the atonement and places New Testament teaching in its Old Testament and Greco-Roman contexts, demonstrating that the interpretation of atonement in the Pauline corpus must include substitution.

Defending Substitution: An Essay on Atonement in Paul (Acadia Studies in Bible and Theology), by Simon Gathercole

From the Back Cover Defending Substitution is part of the Acadia Studies in Bible and Theology series. Series editors are Craig A. Evans and Lee Martin McDonald."The meaning of Jesus's death remains controversial. In this short exploratory study Simon Gathercole draws on a range of classical as well as biblical sources to argue that for Paul, at least, the notion of substitution remained central. Many questions remain, but this book will give new energy to the ongoing discussion."--N. T. Wright, University of St. Andrews"Why is Good Friday good? According to one classic answer to this question, Jesus's shameful and violent death belongs to the good news of the gospel because he died in our place. By careful and lucid analysis of key passages, Simon Gathercole shows that this view has deep roots both in Paul's texts and in his Jewish and Greco-Roman cultural heritage. Often criticized and caricatured, the concept of substitution is integral to the New Testament's conviction that Christ died 'for us' and 'for our sins.'"--Francis Watson, Durham University"In this little book, Simon Gathercole carefully and convincingly dismisses false dichotomies. The death of Christ is presented in the Bible as both representative and substitutionary. These learned and lucid lectures use the prism of modern disputes to take us to the heart of Pauline teaching on the cross. I highly commend it."--Mark Dever, pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, DC"Can Christ's work of atonement be substitutionary in nature? Though Reformation Protestantism has replied in the affirmative, much recent scholarship has tended to have a negative view of this atonement motif. Simon Gathercole is to be congratulated for intervening in this debate with a short, clear, and lively book that argues the case for a substitutionary motif from a biblical perspective, and with an eye to both the Christian tradition and recent debates in the literature. This is a work all those interested in the atonement will want to read and engage. It is certainly a book I shall be recommending to my students."--Oliver D. Crisp, Fuller Theological Seminary

About the Author Simon Gathercole (PhD, University of Durham) is senior lecturer in New Testament studies in the Faculty of Divinity of the University of Cambridge and Fellow and director of studies in theology at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, England. A leading British New Testament scholar, he has written several groundbreaking books.

Substitution is the hallmark of classic Protestant thinking about the way Christ's cross saves us from our sins; however many are questioning whether the language of substitution does adequate justice to Christ's cross and biblical theology. In Defending Substitution: An Essay on Atonement in Paul, Simon Gathercole surveys the contemporary discussion on substitution and its merits, the strongest exegetical challenges to the doctrine, and examines two key texts from the Pauline literature that explore the nature of substitution in Paul's thought (1 Corinthians 15:3 and Romans 5:6-8). Gathercole is not attempting to eradicate the insights of substitution's critics. He merely seeks to demonstrate that the language of identifying, representation and apocalyptic views of Christ's atonement do not do full justice to the totality of the atonement or Paul’s theology of the cross. Gathercole is bringing the notion of substitution back to the table so we can see a richer picture of Chris't work. This book originated as an SBL paper in 2006 which underwent revision as Gathercole presented the material as a academic lecture series at three different institutions (Concorida, Biola and Acadia). Published here as part of the Acadia Studies in Bible and Theology series (ed by Craig Evans and Lee Martin McDonald), it still maintains the accessibility necessary for a public lecture format (10). Gathercole, here, is as brief as he is suggestive of the ways substitution rounds out our contemporary understanding of the atonement. After an introduction, Gathercole's argument unfolds in three chapters, a brief excursus and a conclusion. In his introduction, Gathercole describes the importance of substitution for both Christian doctrine and pastoral care (14). He defines substitutionary atonement as 'Christ's death in our place, instead of us' (15). While substitution is associated with penal models, Gathercole untangles this, claiming, "Substitution is logically distinguishable from related concepts such as penalty, representation, expiation and propitiation" (18). He t sharpens the idea of substitution by profiling the distinctions between substitution and penalty (18-20), representation (20), propitiation (21-2) and satisfaction (22-3). This helps set limits on what Gathercole’s claims in this essay. It is conceptually possible to speak of punishment, representation, divine appeasement and satisfaction apart from the idea of substitution. Substitution does not necessarily entail all (or any) of these other ideas. Gathercole closes his introduction with a survey of various contemporary criticisms of subsititutionary atonement (i.e. that it is a legal fiction, an immoral doctrine, its rejection on philosophical and logical grounds). In chapter one, Gathercole turns to what he feels are three strongest antisubstitutionary exegetical cases for the atonement. He profiles the Tübingen understanding of representative 'place-taking,' Morna Hooker's Interchange, and apocalyptic deliverance. The Tübingen school (building on the work of Gese and Hofius) describes Christ's death through the lens of the Day of Atonement rituals (Lev. 4-5, 16). In the sacrifice of the bull and the goat, the priest and the people were invited to identify in the sacrifice through the laying on of hands. In a similar way we are set free by identifying with Christ in his sacrifice (36-7). Hooker's interchange emphasizes our union to and participation with Christ in his death (41). The apocalyptic view focuses on how Christ's death sets us free from the powers (46). Gathercole praises each of these approaches for the way they handle some biblical texts and describe aspects of the atonement; however, he also observes where each fails to do justice to everything that Paul says on the atonement. One area that he critiques all of these approaches is in their failure to grapple with how Christ saves from our 'sins' (individual infractions) and not just our 'Sin' (our condition).Chapter two and three provide the exegetical case for where Gathercole sees the language of substitution in Paul. Chapter two focuses on 1 Corinthians 15:3, "Christ died for our Sins according to the Scriptures." Chapter three explores the vicarious death of Christ as described in Romans 5:6-8, "For although we were weak, yet at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might dare to die. But God demonstrates his love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Between these chapters is a brief excursus on why if Jesus died in our stead, we still die. Gathercole argues convincingly that 1 Cor 15:3 builds on the notion of substitution with Isaiah 53 in the background whereas Romans 5 describes vicarious atonement with Roman and Greek parallels in the background.Gathercole isn't out to debunk contemporary discussions of how we participate in Christ's death and his atoning sacrifice. He has no bone to pick with idenitfication, representation or Christus Victor undderstandings of the atonement. What this essay highlights is the way these, in various ways, fail to describe all that happens in the atonement (and even all that Paul has to say about it). Nor is Gathercole foisting on us an either/or understanding where we ought to see the atonement as substitutionary only. Rather he helps us see a fuller picture of the atonement where in a very real way, Christ died so we don't have to. This book helps illustrate the richness of God's work in Christ. Personally I found it helpful because while I appreciate some of the developments in atonement theology, I've found the blanket criticisms of all things substitutionary puzzling. Another insight I gained from the way Gathercole profiles the alternative views, is he shows how a totalizing vision of the atonement determined what a passage is allowed to say. When our conceptual framework is too rigid we fail to see the full richness of what is described in Paul’s theology (or other writers). Gathercole has a fuller atonement theology because he allows for the diversity in the meaning of Paul’s material. I give this book four stars.Notice of material connection: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Around this time last year I read Justification Reconsidered. There, he was rethinking a Pauline theme, and in some ways, that’s also what he is doing in his recent book Defending Substitution: An Essay on Atonement in Paul. In both books, he is defending a classical understanding of Paul’s soteriology in light of recent objections and/or recalibrations. Though the titles frame it differently, these books work well in tandem and demonstrate fine Pauline scholarship in relatively bite size form. This book has four chapters, though the first is simply an introduction framing the discussion. Once framed, Gathercole highlights three recent challenges to the traditional understanding of substitutionary atonement and their underlying connection. Then, he defends the classical view in light of these objections. First, he focuses on 1 Corinthians 15:3Open in Logos Bible Software (if available) and Paul’s claim that Christ’s dead for us was “according to the Scriptures.” Second, he focuses on Romans 5:6-8Open in Logos Bible Software (if available) and Paul’s use of vicarious death traditions widely known in his first century context. A conclusion recapitulates this all briefly and next thing you know, you’ve just read a book.Readers who are interested in either Paul’s theology or soteriology (or ideally both) will want to check this book out. Gathercole is interacting with the frontlines so to speak of critical scholarship. In doing so, he models a careful reading of an opposing position and then a gracious response that digs deeply into the Scriptures as well as background historical context in order to defend the traditional understanding of Christ’s death being for us in a substitutionary sense. Because of that, one can learn not only from the content of Gathercole’s argument, but it’s character as well.[I was provided a review copy of this book by the publisher]

By Dwight Gingrich "There is a strong tendency in current scholarship on Paul to resist seeing Christ’s death as in our place, instead of us. Rather, scholars prefer a view of Christ’s death with us—where he identifies with us rather than dying a unique death alone for us. Indeed, the point that Christ’s death is representative and therefore not substitutionary can often be made briefly in passing, as if it were understood to be an uncontroversial thought." (Gathercole, 29)It is this “uncontroversial thought” that Gathercole aims to challenge in this brief (128 pp.) book. I think he does so well.It is important to recognize what this book is not: It is not a systematic discussion of the doctrine of substitutionary atonement. It is not a survey of all the texts that may support this doctrine. Nor is it a defense of any particular version of substitutionary atonement, such as penal substitutionary atonement. It is certainly not an attempt to assert substitutionary atonement as the only or even the chief theory of the atonement. What Gathercole does aim to do is to provide evidence, based primarily on two Pauline passages, that substitution is one biblical and valid way of understanding Christ’s cross-work.Defending Substitution is based on several lectures given by Gathercole, but it reads very well as a book. Here is the table of contents:Introduction The Importance of Substitution Defining Substitution: Christ in Our Place Criticisms of Substitution1. Exegetical Challenges to Substitution The Tübingen Understanding of Representative “Place-Taking” Interchange in Christ Apocalyptic Deliverance The Omission or Downplaying of “Sins” Conclusion2. “Christ Died for Our Sins according to the Scriptures” (1 Cor. 15:3) The Importance of 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 “According to the Scriptures” Substitution in 1 Corinthians 15:3 ConclusionExcursus: An Objection—Why, Then, Do Christians Still Die?3. The Vicarious Death of Christ and Classical Parallels (Rom. 5:6-8) The Translation of Romans 5:6-8 A Sketch of the Exegesis Vicarious Deaths in Classical Tradition The Comparison in Romans 5:6-8 ConclusionConclusionBibliographyIndex of SubjectsIndex of AuthorsIndex of Scripture and Other Ancient SourcesIn the Introduction, Gathercole defines substitution as “Christ’s death in our place, instead of us… He did something, underwent something, so we did not—and never will—have to” (pp. 15-16). He carefully emphasizes scope and aims of his study: "The matter of what precisely it was that Christ bore in our stead will not be treated here… Substitution is logically distinguishable from related concepts such as penalty, representation, expiation, and propitiation… The investigation here is to be focused not on these other themes but quite narrowly and specifically on substitution… To repeat…, the aim here is not to say that Scripture teaches substitution rather than representation but to say that both are important parts of biblical teaching." (pp. 18-23)Despite not focusing on penal substitution, Gathercole does provide three helpful responses to those who say that this doctrine makes Jesus the victim of “cosmic child abuse”: “First, such theological criticisms neglect the obvious fact that the death of Christ is not that of a third party but is the ‘self-substitution of God’… Second, …Jesus offers himself as a sacrifice in line with his own will… Third, …a response can also be offered that is more subjective but… certainly no more subjective” than the caricatures of “certain atonement theories as cruel, violent, unjust, and the like”: “this is not how millions of Christians over the centuries have experienced such teaching.” Indeed, criticism of penal substitution seem to come more from academia than from “the world’s lay Christians” (pp. 24-25).In Chapter One, Gathercole responds to three atonement theories which aim to leave no room for substitution. The “Tübingen understanding of representative ‘place-taking’” (popular in parts of Germany) draws on a particular interpretation of Levitical sacrifices to assert that “when Christ dies, all die with him” (p. 36). A second theory, promoted by Morna Hooker, “considers substitution to be not only un-Pauline but actually something criticized by Paul” (p. 38). “Paul’s understanding of the process is therefore one of participation, not substitution; it is a sharing of experience, not an exchange. Christ is identified with us in order that—in him—we might share in what he is” (Hooker as quoted by Gathercole, pp. 40-41). A third theory, popular particularly in North America, is “apocalyptic deliverance.” This view, associated with scholars such as J. Louis Martyn, asserts that it was Paul’s opponents who emphasized that Christ died to provide forgiveness. For Paul, in contrast, “the human plight consists fundamentally of enslavement to supra-human powers; and God’s redemptive act is his deed of liberation” (Martyn as quoted by Gathercole, p. 44).Graciously, Gathercole finds much of value in all three theories. (So did I.) But he faults each on several points, and all for downplaying the problem of sins (individual acts of evil), as opposed to Sin (singular, evil personified). He presents abundant evidence to show that sins were a frequent and important focus of Paul’s writings.Chapter Two takes a refreshingly positive turn, with its constructive exegesis of 1 Corinthians 15:3. “Dying for sins,” Gathercole notes, is not the same thing as “dying for us” (p. 55). “The aim of this chapter, then, is to examine Paul’s theology of the atonement through the lens of the words ‘Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures’” (pp. 56-57). After demonstrating the importance of his chosen text, Gathercole assembles impressive linguistic evidence that Paul is alluding to Isaiah 53 in 1 Corinthians 15:3. This is important because “vicariousness—in the sense of exclusive substitution—is clearly present in the Hebrew text” and Greek versions of Isaiah 53 (p. 68). Multiple OT texts present a norm that forbids substitution (Num. 27:3; Deut. 24:16; Josh. 22:20; 1Kings 16:18-19; Jer. 31:30). “In this sense,” Gathercole observes, “Christ’s death is not according to the Scriptures” (p. 71). But Isaiah 53 turns the OT norm on its head, describing salvation being achieved through an innocent individual bearing the sins of others. “The default Old Testament position would be ‘he died for his sins’ or ‘we died for our sins.’ The miracle of the gospel, however, is that he died for our sins” (p. 73). Paul’s allusion to Isaiah 53 suggests that he understands Christ’s work as being, like the Servant’s, substitutionary. In a brief excursus Gathercole explains why, if Christ died for us, believers still die. He suggests that Paul writes about death in four ways: (1) the physical death of believers, which he often “undermines” by language like “falling asleep”; (2) “the death to sin and burial in baptism that occurs in Christian initiation”; (3) the death of unbelievers, the penalty for sin and living according to the flesh, which Paul describes without softening, using language like “perish”; (4) the death of Jesus, which Paul never softens with terms like “falling asleep,” nor finalizes with terms like “perishing.” “The main point to conclude is that believers do still go on to die death #1 above but will not ‘perish’ (#3 above)… Christ has undergone a death like death #3 above to save us from death #3; therefore death #1 is not nearly so serious—it is a mere falling asleep” (pp. 80-83).In Chapter Three, Gathercole asks what examples Paul might have had in mind when he writes that “for a good person someone might perhaps even dare to die” (Rom. 5:6-8). He concludes that “the most natural link in Romans 5 is with examples of vicarious death in classical texts (broadly understood). There are a number of such classical works… where this same substitutionary language is used” (p. 90). The most prominent of such classical examples is Alcestis, who was referenced by writers spanning a time from Euripides (c. 438 B.C.) to the second century A.D. and beyond. The story of Alcestis was part of common culture in Paul’s day: “An exact contemporary of Paul, the philosopher Musonius Rufus, uses Alcestis” as a positive example (p. 96). There are interesting parallels between accounts of Alcestis and Paul’s language in Romans 5 and elsewhere: classical writers said that Alcestis “dared” to die “on behalf of,” “in place of,” or “instead of” her husband, who is described as a “good” man. Other substitutionary deaths are described by classical philosopher and writers, but they are understood to be rare (cf. Paul’s “one will scarcely die… perhaps… one would even dare to die”), occurring only in the contexts of conjugal love, the institution of friendship, and family ties. “Paul sees that there is common ground between these pagan instances and the death of Christ”but “for Paul the differences are more striking than the similarities,” for Jesus dies for “the ungodly… sinners… enemies” (p. 104). Yet the core similarity remains: in these classical examples, “the death ‘for’ another is not merely a death ‘for the benefit of’ another—‘for their sake’ in a general sense. Nor is it death with them. Rather, it is… a death that averts death” (pp. 106-107). Thus Paul’s apparent allusion to these classical examples supports the conclusion that he sees Christ’s death as being substitutionary.I find little to fault in Gathercole’s book. A few times I wondered if there was a bit of slippage in his logic, with him (a) proving that Paul was interested in our need for forgiveness for individual sins and then (b) using that evidence as proof that Paul believed in a specifically substitutionary atonement. But might not representation also be—at least theoretically—a solution for the problem of sins, with us dying with Christ for our sins (rather than he dying for our sins)? But this tentative critique is peripheral to Gathercole’s main arguments. This book left me hungry for more. Other texts should be tested for substitutionary theology (Rom. 4:25; Gal. 1:4; 2:20; Heb. 2:9; etc.), and I would like to read an equally careful defense of a specifically penal substitutionary atonement. But what I liked best about this book—besides the excellent exegesis of its two main texts—was Gathercole’s repeated insistence that we allow for the NT’s multiple images of the atonement.Let me end as Gathercole himself ends: "The choice between salvation as dealing with both ‘trespasses’ or ‘debts’ (plural) and with liberation from the power of (the) evil (one) was a choice apparently not faced by Jesus in his formulations of the Lord’s Prayer. Similarly, we need not be forced to opt either for Jesus’s substitutionary death, in which he deals with sins, or for a representative or liberative death, in which he deals with the power of evil. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder!" (pp. 112-13)Gathercole achieves his goals well in this book. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.-------Disclosure: I received this book free from Baker Academic through the Baker Academic Bloggers program. By a friend of Jesus Ms. Snow has truly provided a wealth of tools and techniques to successfully prevent and/or address overwhelming negative and harmful emotions experienced by every type of person, including those with personality disorders, mood disorders, phobias, sensory-input challenges, etc., as well as the generally emotionally-stable person. Ms. Snow draws upon her broad and in-depth and thoughtful knowledge and understanding gained through her many years of study and interest in the mental/emotional health field. Due to her widespread, practical knowledge on this subject, a panel of experts could not have provided better recommendations for coping with and conquering disabling emotional energies. There is something for every person, here, relative to their finding useful and sensible and up-to-date answers which can and will assist them in emotional self-regulation. My hat goes off to Ms. Snow, again, for this well-written piece of health literature! Sincerely, Mack Ethridge, President, New Frontier Health Research, and researcher, author, and developer of the world's first and medically endorsed OCPD deliverance program.

I scrambled to find a therapist and resources that could applet adults attempting to develop the strengths and moderate the negativity and deficiencies that obscure any glimmer of positivity. This being one of the few materials aimed at results, I soon and easily found and procured it. However, I was disappointed with the generalities in which it is framed and the lack of concreteness in the proffered "strategies". A well-intended effort to comfort and educate, without question, but this book falls short of the ambition its title bears.

Review "Kate Braestrup is funny, reflective, and--above all--honest. In Anchor and Flares, she has proven, once again, that she is a writer upon whom nothing is lost, even when her mind is reeling."―Phyllis Theroux, author of Night Lights: Bedtime Stories for Parents in the Dark"Kate Braestrup is at the very top of her game with Anchor and Flares. She's working to understand the very heart of parenthood--the weave of attachments that make it almost impossible to do what we know we must: let go."―Kelly Corrigan, author of Glitter and Glue and The Middle Place"Reading Anchor and Flares is like having a fiercely compassionate and comically no-nonsense best friend meandering with you through meditations on faith, war, death, and parenting. Why? Why? Why? Braestrup asks a million times, in a million different ways. Sometimes the answer is courage or grief or hope. But usually it's love."―Catherine Newman, author of Waiting for Birdy"Sensitive and wholesomely charming, the book is refreshingly free of preachy proselytization and instead addresses the bittersweetness of parenthood and perennial nurturing. Braestrup delivers another appealing, tenderhearted memoir braiding faith and family."―Kirkus

Deep and Meaningful Look at Life/Death/Family/ and Love By poemgirl I have read all of Kate Braestrup's book and up until this one, her first book, Here If You Need Me: A True Story, was my favorite. This one, however, touched me deeply. In between relating stories about the accidents and deaths she and her fellow Maine Wardens have to deal with, Braestrup intertwines her own experiences as a mother, wife, and chaplain. And all of these stories are ones that any parent, (any person, really ) who has ever cared for and worried about another human being can identify with. No one is immune from life's heartaches, but God's grace and love helps us muddle through. I have already recommended this book to friends and family.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. 4.5 stars... Braestrup's third memoir is superb By Paul Allaer "Anchor & Flares: A Memoir of Motherhood, Hope & Service" (2015 publication; 335 pages) is the latest memoir from Maine Game Warden Service chaplain and Unitarian Universalist minister Kate Breastrup. I admit that I was not familiar with her before, and so even though this is I believe her third memoir, it is the first of hers that I've read.As the book opens, we get are introduced to the author's family situation. Turns out that her husband, a Maine State Trooper, was tragically killed in a car accident in the mid-nineties, but that she eventually found a new partner, and among the both of them, they have six children to raise. The book is a reflection of the hopes and fears of a mother as she guides her four kids and two stepkids through youth and young adulthood as best as she can. The best protracted story line (if you can call it that) relates to her oldest, Zach (whom by my calculations is the same age as my oldest), who confesses to be interested in joining the military, and the conflicted feelings that generates for the author, whose father also was in the military. "The mission and purpose of the United States military is not to provide job training or career opportunities for young people. It is not to foster social bonds between a diverse set of Americans, nor is it to serve as a vehicle for desirable social change--even if it has at times done those things. The mission and purpose of the military is to fight and win wars." Apart from the reflections on her family's life, the author also relays a number of heartbreaking stories involving her duties as the chaplain for the state of Maine's Game Warden Service (think: when someone drowns in a lake, or someone get accidentally shot during hunting, etc.).Throughout the book, the author brings these memories and reflections on life with respect and charity, and mostly, with a love of life and family. She makes it easy for us to relay to those stories. They are not unique, even if they certainly are interesting. Reading this book makes me realize how universal those feelings are. I can't wait to check out Braestrup's previous memoirs. Meanwhile, if you are, like me, a fan of non-fiction and in particular memoirs, you will "Achor & Flares" is irresistible, and it comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Kate's books are ALWAYS worth a read. By Jane Woodruff Kate's books never disappoint. She is a fabulous storyteller who can share deep emotional topics but often presents them with her unique perspective. Once again, another book so very well done, Kate.

A contemporary novel tackling issues of sex and sexuality. Forty years ago four people conspired to conceal a teenage pregnancy. Now one of them is dead and a book about her threatens to expose a Member of Parliament's guilty secret. For how long will Roger be able to prevent Sally getting at the truth of her parentage? Can he prevent the break-up of his own long term gay relationship? We've come a long way from the prudery still prevalent in post WWII Britain to the acceptance of gay marriage. Did the new found sexual freedoms of the 1970s send the wrong signals to men who regard young women as 'fair game' for predatory behaviour and make recently exposed scandals involving celebrities inevitable?

Review According to award winning Irish author and playwright John MacKenna:"A wonderfully absorbing story with characters who came alive and a narrative that really carried me through the book in just three sittings."Another awarding Irish author, Niamh Boyce, called it: "A well written, intriguing and topical political mystery."

About the Author Frank Parker was born and lived in England until he retired in autumn 2006, when he relocated to Ireland, where his son had already made his home. Although drawn to writing since childhood his career as an Engineer, and the need to support his family, limited the amount of time available to practice the craft. With retirement he was able to find time to concentrate on fiction. In recent years he has produced numerous short stories and self-published 3 previous novels. His short stories have appeared in 3 limited edition anthologies. He likes to write about the lives of ordinary people and is especially drawn to periods in history when the struggle to survive was much harder than it is today. The role of politics with a small 'p' in that struggle fascinates him, especially the politics of gender. He believes that women have, in the past, suffered more than men whilst achieving much more than they have been given credit for. He tries to reflect this in his writing. He lives with his wife of 52 years in the Irish midlands.

By Terry Tyler Reviewed by me as part of Rosie Amber's Review TeamThis is an intelligently constructed, fairly complex drama that deals with the changing social attitudes of England since the 1970s, written from the points of view of three main characters. It opens with Roger, who has written a book about a recently deceased soap star. He meets a young woman who claims to be the soap star's daughter, which opens up old wounds and secrets from four decades before. Roger is forced to face up to his own guilt about his part in the cover up, which involved family friends and a local MP, and deal with the impact of the revelations on his own relationship. The book covers many decades, with nostalgia-worthy details in each. I was a teenager in the 1970s, and this book did make me think about how far we have moved on in terms of prejudice and 'the permissive society', as it was called back in those days; sometimes for good, sometimes not so much. As the story goes on, suggestions of historic sexual harrassment are uncovered—very topical and sinister.I found the subject matter quite interesting to read about; after all, soap operas and dramas themselves are so often based around hidden affairs and secret offspring; you can't go far wrong with a bit of family intrigue of this type! I'm afraid, though, that I found it all a bit flat. The main problem was the dialogue; each character used similar vocabulary, tone, mood and rhythms of speech; I kept forgetting who was who because they all spoke in the same way, the dialogue being mostly used to deliver facts, as was much of the narrative, as opposed to telling a compelling story with atmosphere and emotion. A trait I've noticed in many self-published mystery type books with intricate plots is that characters have lengthy conversations in which they discuss the whys and wherefores of a situation, in order to impart chunks of information to the reader, but if the characters have not leapt off the page and become real people, it's hard to care. I also felt that some of the references to social media and popular culture were a little forced.Having said all that, the writing did improve when it moved onto the second character, Mabel, and more so again I reached the third, Douglas. The book's other good point was that the plot strands worked together well; I didn't find any inconsistencies or parts that weren't feasible, a huge plus. To sum up - it was just okay for me, but I daresay readers who care more about a carefully constructed plot than character connection would enjoy it more.

So here it is:A young lady's indiscretion at the beginning of her woman hood launches her on a journey of self- discovery, self-doubt and a struggle with co-dependence as she rises like a star; hometown girl turned celebrity on the small screen. The man involved in this indiscretion had also done something to her to make her uncomfortable in certain ways around men for many years after, while also leaving her pregnant after the single encounter. The circumstances and resulting child were hidden immediately with the help of a mutual friend, in order to protect both her potential acting career and his political career and family.Forty years later those secrets are threatened to be spilled despite the carefully laid plans and also in spite of the biography that was written to keep Madge's life and character cast in a positive light, even after her death. The story is split between three POV's. Each POV character is well rounded and their personality shines through in their actions and reactions throughout the story. They are built through interaction with the world and people around them, and not through basic descriptions. The story is ultimately about Madge, but you tend to really care for some of the other characters even more as their life story is told. Their involvement in Madge's life is only a part of their story, and the other parts are just as interesting to read about. The author really shines in his portrayal of human inner thought and reflection. I could really feel how that particular character felt, and see the world through their eyes. His easy way of capturing dialogue kept the story flowing well, and the scenes interesting. The descriptive parts were in depth but kept to the point so as not to go overboard or bore the reader. This book is out of my "normal" type of read, but I really enjoyed it for all the reasons listed above. The only thing I am left wondering, is what really happened that night that caused Madge to become the person she was?All in all this is a very in-depth read that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go until you’ve read the last page.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Seeds We Sow By John Another fine novel from Frank Parker. What are the consequences of a seemingly meaningless sexual romp between a man in his late twenties and a girl in her teens when the encounter leads to the birth of an unacknowledged child? What is the fallout 40 years later, after the girl has become a well-known actress and the man has become a respected Member of Parliament?

"Nell Zink is a writer of extraordinary talent and range. Her work insistently raises the possibility that the world is larger and stranger than the world you think you know." (Jonathan Franzen)

Virginia, 1966. The motionless deeps of the lake outside Stillwater College are being ruffled. Lee, a blue-blooded poet and professor, is determinedly fondling Peggy, an ingénue freshman with literary pretensions, in his canoe. So begins a long affair, but the two are mismatched from the start.

The story that follows rocks the boat in every sense. Nell Zink's hugely entertaining, totally unique Mislaid explodes the nuclear family and topples every foundation of identity - black and white, gay and straight, "normal" and very very strange....

Promising start By AM I bought this book because of The New Yorker's glowing profile of Ms. Zink and the first chapter of the book published as a short story in the same. It's good to have friends in high places! The first half of this book raced by and was witty and thoughtful - I laughed out loud during the commute to work. The last half, though, descended into slapstick and circled its way to a nice pat ending. A promising start with a disappointing finish but worth the read for the first half's vivid, funny prose.

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Not for me. By Carrie G. I won this book through Goodreads First Reads.I really wanted to like this book but in the end I found myself not really caring what would happen. Peggy is really the most unlikable lead character I’ve come across in a while. The book starts off basically with Peggy declaring she’s a lesbian then starting college only to sleep with a male teacher and end up pregnant. Lee marries her to do the honorable thing which to me is the least honorable thing to do when he does nothing but cheat on her for the 10 years they do spend together.Peggy finally has enough and leaves the joke of a marriage behind but she also leaves behind her son and only takes her young daughter with her. Instead of getting a divorce and making something of herself she ends up getting false identities for herself and her daughter and hiding. Then of course the only logical step from there instead of doing something as obvious as getting a job or going back to school is to end up in business with a drug dealer. There are a few funny moments throughout the book but I spent too much time just shaking my head at the choices and actions of all the characters to rate this any higher than maybe a 2.5.

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Witty writing By Alan A. Elsner There has been a lot of buzz about this author and her peculiar take on life. I found this novel eminently readable and enjoyable replete with witty writing and amusing observations - but the characters seemed a little forced to me as if they were invented like mannequins to serve the author's literary purposes rather than real life men, women and children. The main character, Meg, is a lesbian who gets herself into a marriage with a fairly unstable homosexual, Lee, who edits a poetry magazine at an obscure Virginia college. They manage to have two children together, a boy and a girl, before the marriage collapses in a welter of bitterness. Meg flees, taking the little girl but leaving the eight-year-old boy behind with his father.Meg reinvents her daughter as black (even though she is blond) and gets her a new identity. They live under the radar in great poverty, sustained only by Meg's activities as the sidekick of a local drug dealer. Meanwhile Lee continues to search for his missing daughter. We know that at some point a reunification will happen and when it does, the author engineers and fairly successful comic denouement. The book is often insightful and full of sly little observations. In fact, the chief pleasure of this book is the writing. Whether one is invested in these people and their lives is another matter.

By Hrostoski I consider myself an undercover healer, meaning it's not how I explicitly show up in the world. I really enjoyed reading Robin's journey as it strangely paralleled mine, even with the decade of partying and boozing. Although this book is written for the aspiring healer, it's a good read for any human being. We could all use a little more humility, a little more integrity, and a deeper connection with God. There were some parts in the book that really made me question how I'm showing up in the world, even after doing a ton of deep inner work and self study over the past several decades. There is so much yet to learn and unlearn and Robin's book is a great start.

I've been part of prayer groups where incredible healing has occurred. I know that we are not just flesh and bone, but also spirit. I love that this book isn't actually about the healer at all, but rather about God and the relationship that the healer has with Him. In Chapter 4, Robin says, "Above all else, the healer who makes a difference is a man or woman of God." To be honest, there are some concepts in here that I'm not sure about (which is why only 4 stars). However, there is one thing I know for sure... the world needs more healers. In particular, we need healers who are connected to God and making a difference.

Pope A few short years ago, I realized my soul’s calling had nothing to do with the way I was earning a living and serving in the world. I was being called to become a healer of hearts, primarily broken hearts. Boy, I wish I had this book at that time in my life. If you think part of your life’s work is to be a healer in some way, this book is a beautiful roadmap through the divine so that you can create a business that will align your passion with your gifts. Being a healer is important work and it helps to have guides like Thompson along the way.

The secret marriage of a king's daughter sets off a chain reaction of slander, jealousy, and divine intervention in this fairy tale-like romance. Shakespeare based his play on myths of an early Celtic king of Britain, incorporating historical elements from classical Rome and Renaissance Italy. With a cast that includes an evil stepmother, scheming suitor, and devoted lovers, the drama is heightened by duels, kidnappings, and disguised identities.Cymbeline offers captivating storytelling that's crowned by the beauty of its language. Virginia Woolf, T. S. Eliot, Samuel Beckett, and countless others have quoted Act IV's funeral song: "Fear no more the heat o' th' sun/Nor the furious winter's rages;/Thou thy worldly task hast done,/Home art gone and ta'en thy wages." A moving story of loss and recovery, Shakespeare's drama promises that a leap of faith can lead to miracles.

FIRST GENTLEMAN

You do not meet a man but frowns. Our bloods

No more obey the heavens than our courtiers'

Still seem as does the King's.

SECOND GENTLEMAN But what's the matter?

FIRST GENTLEMAN

His daughter, and the heir of 's kingdom, whom

He purposed to his wife's sole son -- a widow

That late he married -- hath referred herself

Unto a poor but worthy gentleman. She's wedded,

Her husband banished, she imprisoned. All

Is outward sorrow, though I think the King

Be touched at very heart.

SECOND GENTLEMAN None but the King?

FIRST GENTLEMAN

He that hath lost her, too. So is the Queen,

That most desired the match. But not a courtier,

Although they wear their faces to the bent

Of the King's looks, hath a heart that is not

Glad at the thing they scowl at.

SECOND GENTLEMAN And why so?

FIRST GENTLEMAN

He that hath missed the Princess is a thing

Too bad for bad report, and he that hath her --

I mean, that married her, alack, good man!

And therefore banished -- is a creature such

As, to seek through the regions of the earth

For one his like, there would be something failing

In him that should compare. I do not think

So fair an outward and such stuff within

Endows a man but he.

SECOND GENTLEMAN You speak him far.

FIRST GENTLEMAN

I do extend him, sir, within himself,

Crush him together rather than unfold

His measure duly.

SECOND GENTLEMAN What's his name and birth?

FIRST GENTLEMAN

I cannot delve him to the root. His father

Was called Sicilius, who did join his honor

Against the Romans with Cassibelan,

But had his titles by Tenantius, whom

He served with glory and admired success,

So gained the sur-addition Leonatus;

And had, besides this gentleman in question,

Two other sons, who in the wars o' th' time

Died with their swords in hand. For which their father,

Then old and fond of issue, took such sorrow

That he quit being; and his gentle lady,

Big of this gentleman our theme, deceased

As he was born. The King he takes the babe

To his protection, calls him Posthumus Leonatus,

Breeds him and makes him of his bedchamber,

Puts to him all the learnings that his time

Could make him the receiver of, which he took

As we do air, fast as 'twas ministered,

And in 's spring became a harvest; lived in court --

Which rare it is to do -- most praised, most loved,

A sample to the youngest, to th' more mature

A glass that feated them, and to the graver

A child that guided dotards. To his mistress,

For whom he now is banished, her own price

Proclaims how she esteemed him; and his virtue

By her election may be truly read

What kind of man he is.

SECOND GENTLEMAN I honor him

Even out of your report. But pray you tell me,

Is she sole child to th' King?

FIRST GENTLEMAN His only child.

He had two sons -- if this be worth your hearing,

Mark it -- the eldest of them at three years old,

I' th' swathing clothes the other, from their nursery

Were stol'n, and to this hour no guess in knowledge

Which way they went.

SECOND GENTLEMAN  How long is this ago?

FIRST GENTLEMAN  Some twenty years.

SECOND GENTLEMAN

That a king's children should be so conveyed,

So slackly guarded, and the search so slow

That could not trace them!

FIRST GENTLEMAN Howsoe'er 'tis strange,

Or that the negligence may well be laughed at,

Yet is it true, sir.

SECOND GENTLEMAN  I do well believe you.

FIRST GENTLEMAN

We must forbear. Here comes the gentleman,

The Queen and Princess.

They exit.

Enter the Queen, Posthumus, and Imogen.

QUEEN

No, be assured you shall not find me, daughter,

After the slander of most stepmothers,

Evil-eyed unto you. You're my prisoner, but

Your jailer shall deliver you the keys

That lock up your restraint. -- For you, Posthumus,

So soon as I can win th' offended king,

I will be known your advocate. Marry, yet

It has three plots, managing to drag in a banishment, a murder, a wicked queen, a moment of almost sheer pornography, a full-on battle between the Romans and the British, a spunky heroine, her jealous but not-really-all-that-bad husband, some fantastic poetry and Jupiter himself descending out of heaven on an eagle to tell the husband to pull his finger out and get looking for his wife. Finally, just when your head is spinning with all the cross-purposes and dangling resolutions, Shakespeare pulls it all together with shameless neatness and everybody lives happily ever after. Except for the wicked queen, and her son, who had his head cut off in Act 4."Cymbeline" is, then, completely nuts, but it manages also to be very moving. Quentin Tarantino once described his method as "placing genre characters in real-life situations" - Shakespeare pulls off the far more rewarding trick of placing realistic characters in genre situations. Kicking off with one of the most brazen bits of expository dialogue he ever created, not even bothering to give the two lords who have to explain the back story an ounce of personality, Shakespeare quickly recovers full control and races through his long, complex and deeply implausible narrative at a headlong pace. The play is outrageously theatrical, and yet intensely observed. Imogen's reaction on reading her husband's false accusation of her infidelity is a riveting mixture of hurt and anger; she goes through as much tragedy as a Juliet, yet is less inclined to buckle and snap under the pressure. When she wakes up next to a headless body that she believes to be her husband, her aria of grief is one of the finest WS ever wrote. No less impressive is her plucky determination to get on with her life, rather than follow her hubby into the grave.Posthumus, the hubby in question, is made of less attractive stuff, but when he comes to believe that Imogen is dead, as he ordered (this play is full of people getting things wrong and suffering for it), he rejects his earlier jealousy and starts to redeem himself a tad. There's a vicious misogyny near the heart of this play, as Shakespeare biographer Park Honan observed, kept in balance by a hatred of violence against women. The oafish prince Cloten, who lusts after Imogen, is a truly repellent piece of work, without even the intelligence of Iago or the horrified panic of Macbeth; his plan to kill Posthumus and rape Imogen before her husband's body is just about as squalid and vindictive as we expect of this louse, and when a long-lost son of the king (don't even _ask_) lops Cloten's head off, there are cheers all round.Shakespeare sends himself up all through "Cymbeline". I wonder if the almost ludicrously informative opening exposition scene isn't a bit of a gag on his part, but when a tired and angry Posthumus breaks into rhyming couplets, then catches himself and observes "You have put me into rhyme", we know that Shakespeare is having us on a little. Likewise, the final scene, when all is resolved, goes totally over the top in its piling-on "But-what-of-such-and-such?" and "My-Lord-I-forgot-to-mention" moments.Yet the moments of terror and pity are deep enough to make the jokiness feel truly earned. When Imogen is laid to rest and her adoptive brothers recite "Fear no more the heat o' the sun" over her body, it's as affecting as any moment in the canon. That she isn't actually dead, we don't find out until a few moments later, but it's still a great moment.Playful, confusing, enigmatic, funny and shot through with a frightening darkness, this is another top job by the Stratford boy. Well done.

Nosworthy really doesn't like the play and dismisses it as an experiment leading up to _The Tempest_. Even his editing of the text is affected by his reading of the play. Only scholars who know something about Shakespeare should venture here.

22 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Simply Magnificent By Sean Ares Hirsch A combination of "Romeo and Juliet," "Much Ado About Nothing," "As You Like It," and "King Lear?" Well somehow, Shakespeare made it work. Like "Romeo and Juliet" we have a protagonist (Imogen) who falls under her father's rages because she will not marry who he wants her to. Like "Much Ado About Nothing," we have a villain (Iachimo) who tries to convince a man (Posthumus) that the woman he loves is full of infidelity. Like "As You Like It," we have exiled people who praise life in the wilderness and a woman who disguises herself as a man to search for her family in the wilderness. Like "King Lear," we have a king who's rages and miscaculated judgement lead to disastorous consequences. What else is there? Only beautiful language, multiple plots, an evil queen who tries to undermind the king, an action filled war, suspense, a dream with visions of Pagan gods, and a beautiful scene of reconciliation at the end. While this is certainly one of Shakespeare's longer plays, it is well worth the time.

Excerpt from The Morality of Woman: And Other Essays"The law condemns to be hung those who counterfeit banknotes; a measure necessary for the public welfare. But he who counterfeits love, that is to say: he who, for a thousand other reasons but not for love, unites himself to one whom he does not love and creates thus a family circle unworthy of that name - does not he indeed commit a crime whose extent and incalculable results in the present and in the future, disseminate far more terrible unhappiness than the counterfeiting of millions of banknotes!" C. J. L. Almquist. The simplest formula for the new conception of morality, which is beginning to be opposed to moral dogma still esteemed by all society, but especially by women, might be summed up in these words:Love is moral even without legal marriage, but marriage is immoral without love.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By Pat Turner Mitchell The 'Morality of Woman: and other essays' gives a woman of today a picture into the struggle of our time. It gives painful examples of how we began climbing out of the culture fostered on us by religion and conventional mores of convenience.
