By Anna Erishkigal This is a totally and thoroughly BIASED review because somebody told me I was mentioned in this book, so I bought it and, lo!!! I -am- mentioned in this book, so I am very happy about that.Okay, now onto the non-biased part. Women authors have always gotten short-shrift in the male-dominated science fiction publishing field. Women make up more than half of science fiction readers, and yet there are so few of us who get recognized by traditional publishing houses and the big award organizations such as the Hugos. For decades, women's science fiction was mis-categorized as romance or women's fiction. They took away our spaceships and scientific devices, put a bare-chested man on our covers, and shelved us in other places in the bookstore or library. 'Women's' issues such as interpersonal relationships, love, marriage, and family are pigeonholed that way, even when it's Sigourney Weaver picking up a pulse cannon and shouting 'get away from her you b!tc#' to a shape-shifting xenomorph on an alien planet. Now science fiction READERS are a particular bunch. Most won't get caught dead in the romance section, so for decades women science fiction writers could only be 'found' if they published under a male pseudonym or used their initials to hide their gender. That is slowly changing, but change comes slowly and you still need to SEEK OUT science fiction tales written by women writers. In THIS guide you will find listed eighty (80) fine female science fiction writers, a brief history of their work, and Sandra's impressions as she read the books of all the authors in this listing.
