In The Spiritual Child, psychologist Lisa Miller presents the next big idea in psychology: the science and the power of spirituality. She explains the clear, scientific link between spirituality and health and shows that children who have a positive, active relationship to spirituality:

* are 40% less likely to use and abuse substances* are 60% less likely to be depressed as teenagers* are 80% less likely to have dangerous or unprotected sex* have significantly more positive markers for thriving including an increased sense of meaning and purpose, and high levels of academic success.

Combining cutting-edge research with broad anecdotal evidence from her work as a clinical psychologist to illustrate just how invaluable spirituality is to a child's mental and physical health, Miller translates these findings into practical advice for parents, giving them concrete ways to develop and encourage their children's-as well as their own-well-being. In this provocative, conversation-starting book, Dr. Miller presents us with a pioneering new way to think about parenting our modern youth.

A Brilliant Study: Relevant for the Self-Awakening of Adults as well as the Nurture of Children By jdb This book is mesmerizing, fascinating, and absolutely brilliant.Allow me to say from the outset, the work presented in this volume far exceeds relevance to insight toward child development. It is not only a window into the mind, psyche, and soul of a child... No, it is a portal peering into the great mystery of each of us.Be advised, this book is not a book about religion nor does it purpose an agenda. This is likely, in my opinion, one of the most object treatments of the concepts relating to human spirituality that I have encountered. I have appreciated the science behind Lisa Miller's (author) observations as much as I have appreciated her "real-life" observations and anecdotes. As I have read through The Spiritual Child, I have been aware of my own thoughts getting carried away with considerations and critical reasoning of the thoughts presented to me. In other words, I am being fully engaged by this book. I am engrossed and invested...I'm considering my own upbringing as well as the raising of my own children and I'm considering the implications of my involvement as I prepare for the welcoming of my first grandchild in the coming months. This, to me, is the sign of a well-written, well-researched, and well-presented book. Honestly, I was hooked even from the introduction. It is evident from dialectical flow of this book that Lisa Miller is a scientist (Clinical Psychologist and Director of Clinical Psychology at Columbia University). Do not let this revelation lead you to consider the book is written in academic speak; it is not. Dr Miller writes as a parent as much as a scientist and presents her thesis and findings in a conversational tone. As I mentioned earlier, I was drawn in to the discussion as early as the introduction. I appreciated the hard data from biological studies that helps to move this subject from nebulous subjectivity to observable, tangible, objectivity. Chapter two, "The Science of the Spiritual Brain," was a helpful introduction and foundational piece for the remainder of the book.Chapter seven, "The Six Spiritual Strengths," is exceedingly thought provoking. This chapter continues to stir thoughts about my own childhood and moves me to consider how I will engage my grandchildren relative to their developing spirituality. The results of avoiding the relevance of these findings and information is revealed in the following chapter eight, "Window of Awakening," where Dr Miller presents some disturbing statistics and correlates-connects "data dots" with real life. The final chapters of the book (chapters 10 through 13) offer many helps and much hope with practical suggestions for engaging children in the development of their spirituality ...their development as human beings. I think, these chapters are just as helpful for the adult who might be reading them and still working through their own self-awareness. I'm convinced the information presented in this book can be the first steps for much inner healing for many people and likely holds the possibility of a second awakening and second chance for better life for them as well.I am looking forward to reading and rereading this book, hopefully in a group of people, so I might glean from the insights of others. Truly, a brilliant study and presentation. 5-stars!

I assumed that this book was about raising a child in a religious environment. I teach preschool in a Christian school and thought that this was another book instructing how to teach a child to love God and study his word. I've read a ton of those, and yes, I enjoy them. But The Spiritual Child: The New Science on Parenting for Health and Lifelong Learning is not about religion. This book is about the spirit of the child, nuturing that inner spirit and documenting it's effect on a child's health and general well being.I absolutley loved this book. It is about buidling a spiritual bond with your child. I have a 12 year old and I could easily apply it's principles to my relaionship with her. And I could also apply it's teaching to my preschool classroom. This book should be recommended reading for all parents and teachers. If all our kids were taught with this type of empathy and love, the world would be a much brighter place.

Courageous inspirational writing in a new approach to parenting By Benjamin This is a book that may have a chance to enter in the realm of essential readings for parenting this 2015. The book is written by Lisa Miller, Ph.D, who has more than a decade of cutting-edge scientific research and broad anecdotal evidence from her work as a clinical psychologist. The peculiar approach, though, for this parenting manual is that it tackles the spirituality of us humans to address healthy growing and ongoing-life long learning. The six spiritual strengths the boos is based on are: 1. A child spiritual compass: trustworthy and good for life; 2. Children are hardwired to hold family sacred and sustaining; 3. Spiritual community gives your child an expanded family of kindred spirits; 4 .Spiritual multilingualism is your child's passport (I was so happy to find this among the essentials, so true in the 21st multilingual world we currently live, this is what really gives your children the edge! This is also very courageous given the circumstance that the U.S. is a substractive bilingual society, which means we have people from all over the world here, but our assimilation process has traditionally expected people to learn English and only English the quicker the better and to forget their home language); 5. Spiritual agency empowers children to create a culture of love; 6. Transcendent knowing: dreams, mystical experiences, and other special knowing. Here is what part one ends. The second part of the book though continues with topics addressing adolescent and young adults, with many inspirational quotes to shake the most skeptical parent. Seven right things (Opportunities for spiritual parenting) are shared (I won't list them not to spoil the book, read it!).I enjoyed this reading and as I said above, I suspect this could be one of the essential readings in this topic for this 2015. The writing is inspiring, full of evidence (notes at the end of the book to support arguments), and brave (thus the 'new science' in the title).
