And when marriage includes step-children, unique challenges may arise that must be overcome in order to maintain stable family dynamics. In The Smart Stepfamily Marriage, authors Ron L. Deal and David H. Olson discuss ways to approach problems to create a healthier family union. This book is a gem, and the advice given to stepfamilies can be used for marriage and relationships in general. I liked how the authors point out that marriages need “check-ups.” Even if there aren’t major problems in a relationship, having regular discussions to check on the health of the relationship is a good idea. This would be a great book to read if you’re about to embark on the journey of a stepparent. And if you’ve been a stepparent for years, the book has a lot of great takeaway points. It would probably be a good tool in couple’s counseling.Deal and Olson address how differing personalities and conflicting approaches to life effect marriage, and the text includes a lot of helpful discussion questions, quiz questions, charts, and graphs. I really liked the section where they compared what money can buy (i.e. flattery) to what money can’t buy (i.e. respect.) Throughout the book, the authors cite research studies and provide interesting statistics. The book also includes a code for a free individual profile at couplecheckup.com, which is handy.I received a review copy from Bethany House.

It was co-written with Laura Petherbridge, and it illuminated a lot of things I hadn’t thought about before crossing the aisle to wedded bliss. I appreciate Ron L. Deal’s insight on stepfamilies. He’s a credible therapist with years of experience and success at helping families cope, as well as being a well known author on the topic of blending stepfamilies. Recently he’s co-written a book with David Olsen, founder of PREPARE/ENRICH, to give necessary tools to help couples who struggle as they try to merge preexisting families. This new book can be added to his other successful works when it comes to pointing couples in the right direction and giving practical advice. This book comes equipped with some in-depth situations and solutions for those situations that normally wouldn’t have favorable outcomes. He also points readers to a tool created by David Olson, The Couple Checkup. If couples take the time to answer the questions truthfully, it can give a breakdown of healthy and unhealthy areas in their marriage that they can tackle together. The Couple Checkup is a report designed to address the following key areas: Communication, Conflict Resolution, Financial Management, Relationship Roles, Affection and Sexual Relationship, Couple Closeness and Flexibility, Family Closeness and Flexibility and Personality.I recommend taking the test at any stage of your stepfamily duration. Once you know about yourself, and your spouse, you have some key areas to strategize over. Also, the book addresses many of these areas, to directly relate to the checkup. I think it’s a great resource for anyone who has chosen to remarry, marry someone with children, has questions about stepfamilies, is looking for meaningful resources to help with relational issues, and needs godly wisdom in seeking resolution. You will not be disappointed.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the Bethany House book review bloggers program. Nine-year old Rachel Thurlow was assigned to write a story as part of her homeschool study of the institution of slavery that preceded the American Civil War. As Rachel’s writing grew longer, she developed this short story narrative of a young slave girl, Tammy, who escaped from her master and rescued her mother to become fugitive slaves on the run for freedom. Tammy met another escaped slave, Gabe, and together they had several adventures, while also learning about the Fugitive Slave Law, which forbade people to help escaped slaves, and the Underground Railroad, in which abolitionists specifically broke the law to assist escaped slaves in their quest for freedom. The end result is this suspense-filled and at times charming tale of escaped slaves on the run, brought to you from the mind of a nine-year old American girl.

By Michelle Carbotte I was blown away when I found out the age of this remarkable young author, Ms. Rachel Thurlow.Tammy’s Story is a charming tale, of a young black slave girl’s plight, as she runs for her life, to escape her slave owner and make it safely to freedom.Ms. Thurlow is wonderfully descriptive with a deep understanding of many of the complex social dynamics of the human experience such as: friendship, death, triumph, gratitude and forgiveness, which shows a maturity well beyond this young writer’s years. This book has everything a person would want in a great story: suspense, drama, romance and humor. It made me both choke up and chuckle, and as a Christian, I appreciated the element of faith that Ms. Thurlow so effortlessly wove into Tammy’s Story.Ms. Thurlow’s natural talent as a fiction writer is clearly revealed in this, her first published eBook, and I can’t wait to see what this creative mind shares with the world next.

I always like reading stories that were written by children because they are so honest, innocent, naive, simple and to the point, all at the same time. It reminds me how to think like a child again. That is something we all need more in our lives.

Helpful for anyone who is married or planning to get married one day By Kat This book thoroughly explores the meaning of marriage from the biblical perspective, and its intended result. The book is well planned and covers a variety of incidents that may transpire in a marriage with out God and also with the plan He wants to be followed. Although there are some minor punctuation and maybe even a few grammatical errors, the paragraphs flow from one to the next with ease. I chose to read this book because I wanted a better understanding of what would be the difference between being in a marriage only for convenience and one that was by God. I am sure, after reading this, that there are legitimate differences and, by keeping in mind the points made in it, I can understand what God wants for all marriages and with this knowledge I can hopefully make a better marriage for myself. I received a free copy of this book in order to give an honest review.

It spoke of the marriage "order", in a positive light, not a demeaning positional notatiin. This was an easy read, very educational and informatative. There were a few grammatical errors, and punctuation errors but overall gave an excellent view or the marital relationship. I received a free digital copy of this book so that I could review it honestly.

By Melissa M Hall Marriage: Conevnient or Covenant explores many complicated aspects of a Christian marriage and gives advice based on scripture. I wasn't familiar with most of the scripture verses that were included and enjoyed the explanations the author gave of how they applied to a marriage. I would say this book is more taylored to someone new to marriage than someone that has a strong long-lasting marriage.I found myself highlighting a few of the questions the author posed. The biggest message I took from the book was, first and foremost, to always think of us as WE. In all actions and decisions we make as individuals, we should always be thinking of the potential consequences for our spouse. Another good thought provoking question posed was, "Why did I get married to you?" I think that when things get rough, I can always look back at why I married my husband in the first place and it puts things back into perspective.Overall, I gave this 4 stars. A lot of the mentalities mentioned in the book are old fashioned. I wish the author could have related the values presented with a more modern-day take on a Christian marriage.

By America Reads Spanish [[VIDEOID:mo18ZRYDONPCHO9]]"A hybrid of the picaresque and existential novel, and taking violence, anguish and the impossibility of progress or redemption as thematic elements, Arlt's novel relates the formative years of Silvio Astier, which are marked by misery and by a series of constant errors and failures, that in the aggregate, constitute his life." As reviewed in "The New Essential Guide to Spanish Reading" which is published by America Reads Spanish: a campaign aimed to increase the use and reading of the Spanish language through the thousands of libraries, schools and book stores in the US.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. the avant-garde enters Latin America By Bálint Hancz El juguete rabioso is the first novel that tried to infuse the avant-garde tendencies in the Latin-American prose and it does it with mixed results. Today the innovations of this novel seem terribly antiquated and cliché, like the utilisation of the street slang in the dialogues and attempts to describe the new urban culture. Its content also tries to touch taboo themes like masturbation and homosexuality, but it merely scratches at the surface. Its psychological approach is also lumpy, the internal monologues are still too tied to the traditional autobiographic form. Still many people like it, maybe because it has some reminiscences with the picaresque form, as it tells the story of a boy growing up in Buenos Aires, and the younger generation can identify with the protagonist's problem whether to succumb to the system or not. Like the picaresque novels, the story-line here is also a string of anecdotes, but it my opinion it is too fragmented, it leaves to many things unclear, jumps over too many details, not always telling what you want to hear. Maybe then it all seemed groundbreaking and it must have confused the literati as not many similar books followed its style. Still as many of the works of the different styles of the avant-garde in the literature, like the futurism or expressionism, contrary to its original intentions, it can still have some antiquated charm for some.

Excerpt from The Colored Girl BeautifulThis volume has been compiled from talks given to girls in colored boarding schools. The first talk was given at the Tuskegee Institute at the request of the Dean of the Girls' Department. It was an impromptu talk after an hour's notice. Just before the Dean closed the door to leave me alone with the girls, I repeated my question, "What shall I talk about?" The reply was, "Tell them anything you think they should know. They will believe an experienced woman like you who travels and knows the world and life."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Horrible Copy! By CJS I wish I could give this book zero stars. I give it one star because the print is completely unreadable and illegible. It's like a bad fax or a photocopy of a bad fax, or maybe a crayon rubbing; it's awful. I don't know where the publishers got this one from, but you'd think they'd have done a better job with this one. I realize this book is very old, but so are many others. Twenty dollars completely wasted, which is a shame, because I really wanted to like this book.

New Book by Catherine Thomas Author of "Light in the Wilderness" The God Seed: Probing the Mystery of Spiritual Development

Release date: Feb 24th 2015 "For behold, the mystery of godliness, how great is it!" (D&C 19:10) "...So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast a seed into the ground; And should sleep, ... and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how. " (Mark 4:26-27) We believe many things but don't always know how to implement them. We believe that human beings can grow into Gods; we accept the importance of coming to Christ and also of awakening our divine attributes and powers -- but how to do that seems obscure. Likely a list of spiritual to-do's ceases to serve. So we may find ourselves seeking a more fulfilling path -- but where to set our foot? In recent years, studies in adult developmental psychology have cast unexpected light on the path to Godhood. They illustrate that human beings already possess the potent seeds for unfolding into more highly developed beings. We learn that spiritual practices can shape the mind into and instrument for facilitating spiritual growth and experience, that is, for continuing from "grace to grace." Along the way, venturing into the unknown, we shed false concepts about ourselves, about our reality, and about God Himself. The purpose of this book is to explore the path of spiritual development.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Great Book! By Mark Ponder This is another terrifically interesting book by Catherine Thomas. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a deeper relationship with the Savior.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. My favorite book By redweston Perhaps my unique life experiences have prepared me to so enthusiastically embrace the concepts explored and expounded within this book at this particular point in my life. However, I genuinely believe that every person will benefit greatly from a heartfelt application of the principles of mindful living. It is not an exaggeration to state that applying the principles of mindfulness have empowered me to effectively accept the transformative power of Christ's atonement. The book presents a seamless integration of the concepts of meditation and mindfulness together with latter day saint doctrine. I have arrived at an understanding of these concepts from a multitude of sources but this book is my favorite. I wholeheartedly and unreservedly recommend this book to anyone who is earnestly seeking to live more fully and completely.

Lmaooooo a must read By Joan Brooks This book is something else Cherelle going around being jealous of everyone when all she had to do was stop sleeping around and get a job just like Pam and Christina did. I still don't understand why Christina would step up her husband and cousin so that they could sleep together. Am very happy that Cherelle got exactly what she deserved in end I was laughing my butt off that was the perfect ending to a GREAT book. Lmaooooo

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Suprisingly Good By M. Serrette I wasn't too sure about the book at first but you know what they say, "Don't judge a book by it's cover." Seeing that this was my first urban book it made me a bit hesitant. I picked it up because I was taking a flight to Australia and knowing it would be a really long flight I thought I would read something that I would usually never pick up. I am strictly Tom Clancy or Steven King reader and I thought it would be a trip to try something totally outside the box. Being a baby boomer and a white male this book was totally out of character.Once I began reading it all I had in my mind was that I was going to laugh at the errors and writing style. I was totally wrong, the writing was superb and the plot kept my attention to the last page. I might not have been a fan of drama and all those shenanigans before but I surely am now.If you are into the genre you will love it and even if you aren't it is still an overall good read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very Good Read By A. Downing I enjoyed this book. I was able to slip into the world Ms. Scott created and care about the characters. A very easy read. I couldn't put it down and finished it within the day.

It had moments where I felt anger, sadness and joy. It made me think about the stories I see in the news media today. It also provided a different perspective on how to address and what I do to bring change. This was worth the read.

Part coming-of-age story and part slice of life, this remarkable novel explores the issues of abortion, illegitimacy, adultery, and skin color.

Rural Virginia, 1948. Belly Anderson is now in the autumn of her life. She cannot help but reminisce about the last summer of her childhood and the events that transpired which irrevocably changed her.

A strong-willed and free-spirited eleven-year-old, Belly reluctantly leaves her home in rural Pharaoh and goes to Jamison to help her mean Aunt Rachel recover from surgery. Belly has two reasons for deciding to go to Jamison: She's left alone when her only friend becomes pregnant and is sent away, and she hopes that she'll be allowed to take piano lessons from Miss Ophelia—her mother's childhood friend.

While taking lessons from Miss Ophelia, Belly soon grows very fond of her teacher and forms a deep bond with her. Then, she learns a terrible secret about Miss Ophelia—a secret that forces Belly to grow up and learn what it really means to be an adult.

Compelling, moving, and deeply absorbing, Miss Ophelia is an unforgettable, timely story that will resonate with readers long after the final page is turned.

Miss Ophelia: A Novel, by Mary Burnett Smith

From Library Journal Through the poignant reminiscences of her 11-year-old protagonist, a shy bookworm in 1940s rural Viginia, retired schoolteacher Smith shows that "abortion, adultery, deceit, religious hypocrisy, and interracial discrimination" can be balanced with "filial and romantic love, loyalty, and forgiveness." Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews A gently affecting tale set in the apartheid-striated Virginia of 1948, where a young girl in a rural ``colored'' community learns something about the complexities of adult love. Eleven-year-old Belly (Isabel) lives with her bravely buoyant widowed mother Lizzie and her compassionate uncle Willie, who muffles his emotional wounds from the war with booze. Belly is a spikey, resilient kid who loves reading and banging on a neighbor's ancient piano, and who hates the prospect of going to the nearby town of Jamison to care for mean Aunt Rachel after her operation. She is deeply lonely there, but things look up when she begins taking piano lessons from Miss Ophelia, Lizzie's childhood friend, and days with gloomy Rachel are brightened some by her husband Avery, a real gentleman with a sense of fun. Little Jimmy next door is a pest who adores Belly and tags along, even to her lessons with Miss Ophelia. But Ophelia, meltingly kind, is a quiet goad to an adolescent conscience, and Belly learns better Jimmy-management. The three weeks Aunt Rachel is in the hospital are paradisiacal, as Miss Ophelia's music, lemonade, and the scent of summer flowers serve to bring together in companionship young and old alike, offering them a fragile shelter from the unpleasant facts of their existence: Avery (his odd marriage); Jimmy (abused by his parents); and Belly, beginning to emerge into a muddled awareness of adolescence. Lovely Miss Ophelia, though, has a secret, a shocker, having to do with a hidden love. Its revelation will help Belly to understand that there is a kind of triumph in commitment, sacrifice, and deep, true love. Smith has richly realized the ritual courtesies and dynamic village unity of an isolated community, and her people are as warmly familiar as good neighbors. An attractive first novel, then, told with a smooth pro confidence, and with the style and ambiance of postWW II popular fiction. It started out slow for me in the beginning, but after reading one-third of the book I had a hard time putting it down. My favorite character was Uncle Willie. He didn't believe in keeping secrets from his 11-year old niece Isabel which I felt was very important. He also had a great sense of humor. When you're open and honest with young people you can prevent them from making the same mistakes you and others have made in the past. I wish someone had done that for me.

The characters: Belly, Willie, Miss Janie, Miss Rachel, Mama, Uncle Avery, Miss Pheenie, And of course, the lovely and dearest of all, Miss Ophelia. When I first got into the book,( first quarter of the book),It primarily focused on teen pregnancy and the main character (Belly's) best friend, Teenie getting sent away to get "rid of her problem", which hurt Isabel Anderson/Walker.The way the book portrays Miss Opelia, and her warm and kind personality was so well-written, that in the end, I cried, thinking about the True love that could never be, between...Oh!!!!! By SHUNDA.BLOCKER@US.PWCGLOBAL.COM My book club recently read "MISS OPHELIA" as our March Book Selection and over 80% of the sistahs in the book club (Circle of Friends II) rated this book a "10". It is a wonderfully written novel that you will find hard to put down. After meeting Belly, her mom, others in the town and Lord...UNCLE WILLIE, you will not be able to put it down until the last page...and then you will be sad...because the story comes to an end. If you are looking for a good book...gift...you definitely need to pick this one up!!!!!

If he were alive today, what might Heidegger say about Halo, the popular video game franchise? What would Augustine think about Assassin’s Creed ? What could Maimonides teach us about Nintendo’s eponymous hero, Mario? While some critics might dismiss such inquiries outright, protesting that these great thinkers would never concern themselves with a medium so crude and mindless as video games, it is important to recognize that games like these are, in fact, becoming the defining medium of our time. We spend more time and money on video games than on books, television, or film, and any serious thinker of our age should be concerned with these games, what they are saying about us, and what we are learning from them.Yet video games still remain relatively unexplored by both scholars and pundits alike. Few have advanced beyond outmoded and futile attempts to tie gameplay to violent behavior. With this canard now thoroughly and repeatedly disproven, it is time to delve deeper. Just as the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan recently acquired fourteen games as part of its permanent collection, so too must we seek to add a serious consideration of virtual worlds to the pantheon of philoso-phical inquiry. In God in the Machine, author Liel Leibovitz leads a fascinating tour of the emerging virtual landscape and its many dazzling vistas from which we are offered new vantage points on age-old theological and philosophical questions. Free will vs. determinism, the importance of ritual, transcendence through mastery, notions of the self, justice and sin, life, death, and resurrection—these all come into play in the video games that some critics so easily write off as mind-numbing wastes of time. When one looks closely at how these games are designed, at their inherent logic, and at the cognitive effects they have on players, it becomes clear that playing these games creates a state of awareness vastly different from that which occurs when we watch television or read a book. Indeed, gameplay is a far more engaged process—one that draws on various faculties of mind and body to evoke sensations that might more commonly be associated with religious experience. Getting swept away in an engrossing game can be a profoundly spiritual activity. It is not to think, but rather simply to be, a logic that sustained our ancestors for millennia as they looked heavenward for answers.Today, as more and more of us look screenward, it is important to investigate these games for their vast potential as fine instruments of moral training. Anyone seeking a concise and well-reasoned introduction to the subject would do well to start with God in the Machine. By illuminating both where video game storytelling is now and where it currently butts up against certain inherent limitations, Liebovitz intriguingly implies how the field and, in turn, our experiences might continue to evolve and advance in the coming years.

God in the Machine: Video Games as Spiritual Pursuit (Acculturated), by Liel Leibovitz

Review “Many dismiss video games as a worthless pursuit, and some even go so far as to consider them a harmful and addictive activity that sets individuals towards violence. Liel Leibovitz defies those assumptions while explaining gaming’s allure and place in the world… . this work is a thoughtful, well-written, and concise scholarly analysis of a popular pastime. As such, it is a recommended resource for college and university libraries.” —Sarah E. Keil, Trevecca Nazarene University, The Christian Librarian

About the Author Liel Leibovitz is a visiting assistant professor at NYU Steinhardt focusing primarily on video game and interactive media research and theory. Having received his PhD from Columbia University in 2007, Leibovitz continues to study the ontology of electronic game play, exploring such diverse issues as human-machine interaction, gaming and the construction of player subjectivity, and representations of death and violence in video games. He is a member of the advisory board of the New York chapter of the Digital Games Research Association, a founding member of the NYU Faculty Council on Games, and a member of the academic advisory board of the American Jewish Historical Society. He is also the author or co-author of several books, including, most recently, The Chosen Peoples: America, Israel, and the Ordeals of Divine Election, co-written with Todd Gitlin, as well as contributor to newspapers and magazines such as the Los Angeles Times, the Atlantic, Dissent, and Tablet.

It clearly shows the moral dimension of video games and the value of game play in our spiritual lives. Extensively researched but very readable. Dr. Leibovitz explodes the conventional media narrative of games as immoral. I think a few heads are going to explode, too.

So concludes Liel Leibovitz, senior writer for "Tablet Magazine" and visiting assistant professor focusing primarily on video game and interactive media research and theory at NYU-Steinhardt, in his recent work "God in the Machine: Video Games as Spiritual Pursuit." This short, 144 page hardback will intrigue gamers and religious alike. Though written more on an academic level, well educated readers will be able to fathom much or most of the author's material. This book unfolds in four chapters where Leibovitz seeks to make the case that gaming, unlike television, literature or warfare, is more attuned to religion. Not that it is an alternative to religion, but that gaming "is a practice in rituals, ethics, morality, and metaphysics" (x). Similarly, religion is modular, rule-based, moved my metaphysical designs that are governed by earthly designs (xi). To make his case, Leibovitz draws in Descarte, Hume, Kant, Kierkegaard, Rabbi Akiva, Maimonides, Augustine, Plato, Aristotle, Wittgenstein, Heidegger, and a host of other communications theorists and philosophers. The author's reason for bringing in such a vast regiment of thinkers is "not to delve deeply into abstract philosophical issues but rather to appropriate their theoretical frameworks and, in some cases, language, to address the distinct realities of video games" (115).For my part there were two issues that made the book a bit stiff. Firstly, the second chapter was all based on the author's gaming experience, described in great detail over 39 pages. It was quite a tedious section to labor through. The second has more to do with the connections the author makes between gaming and some aspects of religion. Sometimes the logical connection Leibovitz perceives is not so clear. I found myself scratching my head on occasion, unable to see what the author saw.On the other hand, I was delighted by some observations. For example, toward the end of the book the author brings into the discussion the old debate between Pelagius and Augustine. Leibovitz surprised me by seeing that Pelagius's "enlightened doctrine" was actually "far more rigid than it sounds; it places upon people an onus no individual could bear" (124). Whereas Augustine offered "a much more humane approach ( . . . ); while life under the shadow of the original sin might appear unjust, divine grace emerges to kindle the torch that illuminates the path to redemption" (125). This brings the author to shockingly conclude, "Video games, then, should be seen as an Augustinian simulator, a rule-based environment into which one enters, abandoning the pursuit of reason and receiving instead a chance to transcend the irresovable anxieties of modern media" (126)."God in the Machine" shows depth as well as breadth. It would be a fitting addition to a book discussion group or theological reading circle. Whether you come to the same conclusions as the author or not, "God in the Machine" will change the way you see gaming here on out. I recommend the book.

By Stephen Rubio I immensely enjoyed this book from cover to cover. It is the first book about video games I've read where I had to stop and think for a decent chunk of time before moving on. I spent about an hour trying to dig into about five pages of content, writing stuff down to figure out all the amazing ideas that had been packed in. It moves between explanation, exploring games, and exploring the structures/impacts of religion beautifully. I disagreed with Leibovitz's points often, but that did not at all impede my enjoyment of this book. This book asks a lot from the reader. You have to be willing to seriously engage video games on an intellectual level, and that can be tough sometimes, but this book seriously pulls it off.

It covers the most important concepts in full and with clarity. It also caused me to absolutely hate critical theory (theories). They are nothing but the fantasies of academics, who have never lived a real life in the real world.

By Dixie Great story line with a few unexpected twists and turns throughout and a BIG surprise in the end. I loved the character development each character held his/her own in the story. This book is definitely a page turner. i found myself saying "no he didn't!, What? She did what?!" I am a big fan of Kennedy's work and certainly pleased with this new one. I found myself captivated with the characters and their stories about their relationship ups and downs. I felt compassion , sorrow and even, oh well you did it to yourself, thoughts about their situations. Wanted to support Gino and kick Black Bill. This book is a great bookclub selection and a good read for men and women as it definitely will get the relationship dialog flowing. 5STARS!!!!! Kim

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting story! By SavaFiend76 What happens when players can't stop playing? This book mainly follows the story of Gino, whose player ways have landed him in prison. While there, he listens to the life stories of several fellow inmates who have also ended up there as a result of their relationships with different kinds of women. Of course, the plot is not that cut and dried! :) It is full of insights into why men behave the way they do - very interesting and thought-provoking. It's a very engrossing read, especially because, as a reader, you want to find out how/why Gino ended up where he is, and of course he tells his story last :) Well-developed characters, well-structured narrative, five stars all the way!
