"A former Calvinistic Reformed Baptist minister and now a Professor of Theology, recounts his theological journey in and out of Calvinism. In so doing, Professor Flowers’ sets out to help his readers understand a non-Calvinistic “Traditional” Southern Baptist interpretation of one of the most quoted and relied upon chapters for defending Reformed soteriology: Romans 9. Flowers writes, “Paul is not attempting to distinguish between those vessels eternally blessed with effectual salvation and those vessels cursed with reprobation; instead the apostle is drawing a distinction between those vessels blessed to carry out the noble purpose of fulfilling God’s promise and those vessels hardened in their rebellion in order to ensure the fulfillment of that same promise…it is all about The Potter’s Promise to bring the Word to all the families of the earth!” “Confused by the issues surrounding Calvinism? Does Romans 9 teach unconditional predestination? Want to cut through some of the red tape? Then read Leighton’s book. He is charitable but gets right to the point, making a strong, biblical case for a God who is glorified by sacrificing Himself for creation and not by sacrificing creation for Himself. He makes a strong case for the God of Jesus Christ.” - Austin Fischer, Pastor and author of Young, Restless, No Longer Reformed."

Speer I think “The Potter’s Promise” is best summed up in a statement Professor Flowers makes in Chapter 1: “God is most glorified not at the expense of His creation, but at the expense of Himself for the sake of His creation.”The assertions in this book are backed up with multiple Scriptural references in context, since Scripture itself is best at interpreting the Bible. Here are the contents of the chapters:Chapter 1 - Changing Your Perspective of the Potter: The characteristics of God; God’s sovereignty, or control, compared with God’s mercy; Professor Flower’s journey into and out of Calvinism; views of some prominent Calvinists.Chapter 2 - The Potter’s Choices: Three kingly choices of our Kingly Potter according to Jesus; “unconditional” choices versus conditional choices.Chapter 3 - The Potter’s Freedom: God’s sovereignty versus autonomous will; the sovereignty of God examined; the omnipotence of God; God’s omnipotence versus sovereignty; Scriptural passages on “authorities” and “powers”; God and a linear timeline and the eternal now; God’s nature.Chapter 4 - The Potter’s Promise: The Potter keeps His promises; judicial hardening; examples of God’s sovereign control over moral evil; quotes by John Hendryx on God’s determinism; two types of hardening; the sinfulness of mankind.Chapter 5 - A Commentary on Romans 9: A verse-by-verse commentary on Romans 9; common views that Calvinists hold about these verses.Chapter 6 - The Potter’s Plan: Professor Flower’s experience with Calvinism; God’s genuine desire for the reconciliation of every individual; the Potter’s redemptive purpose.Summary Commentary of Romans 9: An outline and summary commentary of Romans 9 with Scriptural references to further explain Professor Flower’s points; there are 48 end notes. Before reading this book, I suggest you read Romans 9-11 in one sitting. Consider the context of Romans 9 and how the Old Testament passages relate to what’s being said about Israel. Challenge yourself to consider soteriology from another viewpoint whether you are Calvinist or non-Calvinist. Interact with the all of the Scripture presented in this book as you develop your theological ideas; this process will help you grow in Christ.

Flowers expresses his desire for the readers to fully understand why he had to denounce his belief in Calvinism. He leads the reader through his personal journey of discovery and shares the struggle he faced having learned that his long held, beloved beliefs had been wrong. His desire to know God's intended truth, leads to a wonderful, in-depth analysis of Romans 9. Flowers breaks down a relatively, difficult topic and passage in a way that is understandable, even to someone who is not knowledgeable of Calvinism. His writing stays on topic and in context making the reading easier to understand. I learned so much more about Calvinism and Romans 9. For me personally his analysis of this chapter is spot on in reconciling the text to the Living God in whom I serve. It could not have been easy for Leighton Flowers to openly, publicly denounce this belief. He stood to lose far more than what he would gain. It is refreshing to know there are still some men of God today who will hearken to The Lord and follow truth no matter what it costs. I highly recommend everyone read this commentary and then follow Flower's instruction and "stop and re-read Romans 9 through 11 all the way through from start to finish with this merciful motive in mind. See if you find a divine Father shamefully cutting off children before they are even born, or see if you find a Father mercifully seeking and even longing for the reconciliation of all." All I can really say is, this is wonderful. Anyone who reads this with a heart to really want to know the truth, will come away with truth. Thank you Brother Flowers.

I loved the chapter that went verse by verse on Romans 9. One of my favorite quotes from the book is "In short, I believe God knows the choices of His creatures because He is omniscient, not because He is “omni- deterministic.”Definitely worth your time as you seek to better understand God's plan of salvation and difficult passages like Romans 9.
