A publishing sensation long at the top of the best-seller lists in Israel, the original Hebrew edition of Maimonides and the Book That Changed Judaism has been called the most successful book ever published in Israel on the preeminent medieval Jewish thinker Moses Maimonides. The works of Maimonides, particularly The Guide for the Perplexed, are reckoned among the fundamental texts that influenced all subsequent Jewish philosophy and also proved to be highly influential in Christian and Islamic thought.

Spanning subjects ranging from God, prophecy, miracles, revelation, and evil, to politics, messianism, reason in religion, and the therapeutic role of doubt, Maimonides and the Book That Changed Judaism elucidates the complex ideas of The Guide in remarkably clear and engaging prose.

Drawing on his own experience as a central figure in the current Israeli renaissance of Jewish culture and spirituality, Micah Goodman brings Maimonides’s masterwork into dialogue with the intellectual and spiritual worlds of twenty-first-century readers. Goodman contends that in Maimonides’s view, the Torah’s purpose is not to bring clarity about God but rather to make us realize that we do not understand God at all; not to resolve inscrutable religious issues but to give us insight into the true nature and purpose of our lives.

Review "As Americans show increased interest in Jewish religion and culture in Israel, this English edition is likely to have great appeal."—Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly)"Goodman’s book, a guide to The Guide, is an astonishing achievement. There can be no Maimonides for Dummies, and thus Goodman’s presentation will challenge his readers mightily. It is a challenge very much worth taking."—Philip K. Jason, Jewish Book Council (Philip K. Jason Jewish Book Council)"Goodman's analysis is useful in understanding the purpose and technique of the Guide. It is a must for those with an interest in Jewish philosophy in general and Maimonides in particular."—Randall C. Belinfante, Association of Jewish Libraries Review (Randall C. Belinfante Association of Jewish Libraries Review)“With his characteristic skill and insight, Micah Goodman guides us through the beauty of Jewish philosophy, uplifting us from perplexity to enlightenment.”—Shimon Peres, former president of the State of Israel (Shimon Peres 2015-01-13)“After more than eight centuries Maimonides’s Guide for the Perplexed remains the Everest of Jewish thought, majestic and challenging at the same time. Micah Goodman, one of the brightest of contemporary Jewish thinkers, has provided a superlative introduction to this work. It is engaging, lucid, and a delight to read, enabling Maimonides’s masterpiece to speak compellingly to our perplexities. An outstanding achievement.”—Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, emeritus chief rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Commonwealth (Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks 2015-01-21)“Maimonides and the Book That Changed Judaism presents an exciting and relevant possibility: freeing the mind from the habits of religious discourse and returning the concept of God to the intellectual’s thoughts.”—Ruth Calderon, author of A Bride for One Night, member of the Israeli Knesset, and founder of Alma: Home for Hebrew Culture (Ruth Calderon 2014-09-17)

Stoll This is an amazing book — the best Jewish book I have read in many years.Micah Goodman takes Maimonides' Guide for the Perplexed and makes it accessible and relevant to the modern reader. In doing this, he displays astonishing intellectual range, drawing on ideas from sources as disparate as Groucho Marx, Einstein, Karl Popper, William James, Karen Armstrong, Aristotle, and Bachia Ibn Pakudah. There are a few points where I thought Goodman was slightly off — his assumption on page one about the perfection of God, his treatment of the story of Elisha Ben Abuya, and his handling of the question of anthropomorphism or the corporeality of God. But these are subtleties, and it's not clear in some of the aspects whether my quarrel is mainly with Goodman or with Maimonides. Don't let those quibbles deter you from reading this book, which gave me a new perspective on perplexity, uncertainty, the limits of knowledge, and, as the conclusion puts it "the purpose of life."Though the material is demanding — the Guide was written in Arabic between 1187 and 1191 and deals with deep philosophical and theological questions as filtered through Jewish and ancient Greek law and tradition — Goodman organizes it and breaks it up into brief, digestible chapters. He explains why, as he puts it, "after the failures of modernism and postmodernism" the Guide for the Perplexed is "more relevant today than ever." This reader, at least, came away from the book if not totally convinced, then at least glad to have learned about this way of answering these questions. As Goodman sums it up, "the goal of knowledge is to encounter the limits of knowledge. The full realization of this intellectual project will bring us to a life of awe and wonder in which we are aware that there is mystery at the heart of the world."The fact that this book was, in its original Hebrew, a bestseller in Israel is an encouraging sign. I hope there is an American audience alive to these questions and open to learning from Goodman as a guide to Maimonides' ideas.

By georgehd After reading an excellent review, I purchased this book and am very glad I did. Though Maimonides lived in the 1100s, his writings still can speak to us, whether we be Jewish or some other religion. After recommending this book to our Rabbi, he has adopted it as a book for discussion. Maimonides addressed issues like God, Prophesy, Good and Evil, and a host of other topics that are relevant to modern man. I am going to purchase an additional copy as a gift for a friend, who, while secular and not a member of any religious group, should find reading this work very enlightening.

My copy of that classic I bought in 1948, started to read it, and had to put it aside for some years to get more maturity for understanding it. Now in my old age, 91, comes this invaluable key to the thought of this great thinker.Rabbi Goodman says today we are faced with the extremes of dogmatism and rational skepticism to hinder our search for truth. Maimonides speaks to us in that in his saying that we have two imperatives for finding truth: a certainty that truth is to be found, and a healthy uncertainty that we have ever found it. Think about it.This is a book to read for a few pages and then taking time to digest and assimilate the teachings. As on Maimonides' grave marker in Tiberius are the words, "From Moses to Moses there was no one like Moses."
