Harry Cocque is a quick-witted young lad living in rural Dorset at the outbreak of World War Two. Everything changes with the arrival of thousands of American troops in Dorset, when Harry is called upon to assist in training and helps arrange a showpiece baseball game between the GIs and the villagers. Desperate to meet the enemy face to face but denied transfer to a combat unit, a frustrated Harry devises a plan to join the GIs for the D-Day landings. What could possibly go wrong?

After slogging through a truly arduous book, it was such a delight to pick up Harry Cocque. I found myself laughing out loud, not just soft titters but hearty guffaws. We follow the adventures of Harry and his friends in his village in Dorset.His adventures and observations of his neighbours, and the world around him as we travel with him through the onset on WWII in 1939 to its resolution are sidesplitting. Harry wants to do his "bit" and he does albeit his "bit" is a little less tradtional than most.It is a very funny book that also touches on some serious subjects but does so in a fairly light hearted way for the most part. If you enjoy British humour, which I do, you will love this book. If British humour baffles you, give it a miss. If you do, you will have missed something special.
