During his lifetime, William Gaddis (1922–1998) evaded biographical questions, never read from his work publicly, and didn’t allow his photograph to appear on his books. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. one like the Ister By schlmiel #32 Reading about Gaddis is as valuable as reading Gaddis. There is probably in general terms too little of either. A film should be made of his life and work, one like the Ister, a remarkable film about Heidegger, in which cinema serves as a text of translation and transcription for thought and opinion. Gaddis saw America in its great sham of mercantile and financial capitalism lurching toward the absurd political comedy it has become. Reading Gaddis is like laughing on the way to a public hanging; enjoyable, but dark, and filled with insinuations of a more nearly ultimate form of dread. Had he lived another ten years, he could've been seen as prophetic.

WILLIAM GADDIS AT LAST GAINS RECOGNITIONS By lee hopkins Here is a long overdue, superb biography of one of the greatest of all American authors, who made Pynchon possible, and is grounded inthe equally underrated master Thomas Wolfe. Gaddis chronicles the debasement of American life to illiterate corporate control and digital vulgarity. During his prime yearsthe preeminent writer was loud, fat pathetic Norman Mailer who wrote about Marilyn Monroe, and whose alternative was seento be the posturing epicene Gore Vidal. Though critical consensus favors his JR, Gaddis' masterpiece is The Recognitions, a depiction of modern America as a hall of mirrorsof endlessly refracted forgery of art, life, perception. But his depiction, like that of Pynchon, is hilarious. For it is better to laugh thanto cry, though thinking may be painful.

Paul Muccigrosso II One does not have to be a student of postmodern American Literature to find fascinating the life of William Gaddis and Dr. Joseph Tabbi writes a magnificent biography that makes getting to know the author valuable and rewarding. Touched by the warmth of the author and by the mysteriousness of his ways and ideals I found Gaddis to be somewhat of a hero – perhaps to other authors, to idealists, to those whose need to “do the right thing” might otherwise result in regret or lost opportunity, and to me. Tabbi doesn’t just introduce Gaddis to the reader, he inserts him into the everyday world of the reader allowing the reader to witness and to feel much of Gaddis’ life – the promising and the not so much so.I found Gaddis’ connection with John Kennedy Toole’s novel Confederacy of the Dunces – especially while nearing the end of his own life – quite remarkable. It is the chaotic life led by Ignatius Reilly that might very well be that connection which bound me to William Gaddis, after all. It is easy to discover in William Gaddis a very different sort of heroism and Dr. Tabbi teaches it brilliantly.
