MULLIGAN A collection of long poems and short stories by Amy Lowell (February 9, 1874 Brookline, Massachusetts, Died May 12, 1925 age 51) , an American poet, critic, biographer and 1925 Pulitzer Prize winner for her poetic collection What's O Clock, for which Time magazine put her on it's cover (March 2nd 1925). For that reason I have excluded all purely lyrical poems. But the word "stories" has been stretched to its fullest application. It includes both narrative poems, properly so called; tales divided into scenes; and a few pieces of less obvious story-telling import in which one might say that the dramatis personae are air, clouds, trees, houses, streets, and such like things. It has long been a favourite idea of mine that the rhythms of 'vers libre' have not been sufficiently plumbed, that there is in them a power of variation which has never yet been brought to the light of experiment. I think it was the piano pieces of Debussy, with their strange likeness to short vers libre poems, which first showed me the close kinship of music and poetry, and there flashed into my mind the idea of using the movement of poetry in somewhat the same way that the musician uses the movement of music. It was quite evident that this could never be done in the strict pattern of a metrical form, but the flowing, fluctuating rhythm of vers libre seemed to open the door to such an experiment. First, however, I considered the same method as applied to the more pronounced movements of natural objects. If the reader will turn to the poem, "A Roxbury Garden", he will find in the first two sections an attempt to give the circular movement of a hoop bowling along the ground, and the up and down, elliptical curve of a flying shuttlecock. From these experiments, it is but a step to the flowing rhythm of music. In "The Cremona Violin", I have tried to give this flowing, changing rhythm to the parts in which the violin is being played. The effect is farther heightened, because the rest of the poem is written in the seven line Chaucerian stanza; and, by deserting this ordered pattern for the undulating line of vers libre, I hoped to produce something of the suave, continuous tone of a violin. Again, in the violin parts themselves, the movement constantly changes, as will be quite plain to any one reading these passages aloud. In "The Cremona Violin", however, the rhythms are fairly obvious and regular. I set myself a far harder task in trying to transcribe the various movements of Stravinsky's "Three Pieces 'Grotesques', for String Quartet". Several musicians, who have seen the poem, think the movement accurately given. These experiments lead me to believe that there is here much food for thought and matter for study, and I hope many poets will follow me in opening up the still hardly explored possibilities of vers libre.A good many of the poems in this book are written in "polyphonic prose". A form about which I have written and spoken so much that it seems hardly necessary to explain it here. Let me hastily add, however, that the word "prose" in its name refers only to the typographical arrangement, for in no sense is this a prose form. Only read it aloud, Gentle Reader, I beg, and you will see what you will see. For a purely dramatic form, I know none better in the whole range of poetry. It enables the poet to give his characters the vivid, real effect they have in a play, while at the same time writing in the 'decor'.One last innovation I have still to mention. It will be found in "Spring Day", and more fully enlarged upon in the series, "Towns in Colour". In these poems, I have endeavoured to give the colour, and light, and shade, of certain places and hours, stressing the purely pictorial effect, and with little or no reference to any other aspect of the places described. It is an enchanting thing to wander through a city looking for its unrelated beauty, the beauty by which it captivates the sensuous sense of seeing.I have always loved aquariums, but for years I went to them and looked, and looked, at those swirling, shooting, looping patterns of fish, which always defied transcription to paper until I hit upon the "unrelated" method. The result is in "An Aquarium". I think the first thing which turned me in this direction was John Gould Fletcher's "London Excursion", in "Some Imagist Poets". I here record my thanks. For the substance of the poems—why, the poems are here. No one writing to-day can fail to be affected by the great war raging in Europe at this time. We are too near it to do more than touch upon it. But, obliquely, it is suggested in many of these poems, most notably those in the section, "Bronze Tablets". The Napoleonic Era is an epic subject, and waits a great epic poet. I have only been able to open a few windows upon it here and there. But the scene from the windows is authentic, and the watcher has used eyes, and ears, and heart, in watching. My Favorite -"Spring Day"BathThe day is fresh-washed and fair, and there is a smell of tulips and narcissus in the air.The sunshine pours in at the bath-room window and bores through the water in the bath-tub in lathes and planes of greenish-white. It cleaves the water into flaws like a jewel, and cracks it to bright light.Little spots of sunshine lie on the surface of the water and dance, dance, and their reflections wobble deliciously over the ceiling; a stir of my finger sets them whirring, reeling. I move a foot, and the planes of light in the water jar. I lie back and laugh, and let the green-white water, the sun-flawed beryl water, flow over me. The day is almost too bright to bear, the green water covers me from the too bright day. I will lie here awhile and play with the water and the sun spots. The sky is blue and high. A crow flaps by the window, and there is a whiff of tulips and narcissus in the air.Breakfast TableIn the fresh-washed sunlight, the breakfast table is decked and white. It offers itself in flat surrender, tendering tastes, and smells, and colours, and metals, and grains, and the white cloth falls over its side, draped and wide. Wheels of white glitter in the silver coffee-pot, hot and spinning like catherine-wheels, they whirl, and twirl—and my eyes begin to smart, the little white, dazzling wheels prick them like darts. Placid and peaceful, the rolls of bread spread themselves in the sun to bask. A stack of butter-pats, pyramidal, shout orange through the white, scream, flutter, call: "Yellow! Yellow! Yellow!" Coffee steam rises in a stream, clouds the silver tea-service with mist, and twists up into the sunlight, revolved, involuted, suspiring higher and higher, fluting in a thin spiral up the high blue sky. A crow flies by and croaks at the coffee steam. The day is new and fair with good smells in the air.WalkOver the street the white clouds meet, and sheer away without touching. On the sidewalks, boys are playing marbles. Glass marbles, with amber and blue hearts, roll together and part with a sweet clashing noise. The boys strike them with black and red striped agates. The glass marbles spit crimson when they are hit, and slip into the gutters under rushing brown water. I smell tulips and narcissus in the air, but there are no flowers anywhere, only white dust whipping up the street, and a girl with a gay Spring hat and blowing skirts. The dust and the wind flirt at her ankles and her neat, high-heeled patent leather shoes. Tap, tap, the little heels pat the pavement, and the wind rustles among the flowers on her hat.A water-cart crawls slowly on the other side of the way. It is green and gay with new paint, and rumbles contentedly, sprinkling clear water over the white dust. Clear zigzagging water, which smells of tulips and narcissus. The thickening branches make a pink 'grisaille' against the blue sky.Whoop! The clouds go dashing at each other and sheer away just in time. Whoop! And a man's hat careers down the street in front of the white dust, leaps into the branches of a tree, veers away and trundles ahead of the wind, jarring the sunlight into spokes of rose-colour and green.A motor-car cuts a swathe through the bright air, sharp-beaked, irresistible, shouting to the wind to make way. A glare of dust and sunshine tosses together behind it, and settles down. The sky is quiet and high, and the morning is fair with fresh-washed air.Midday and AfternoonSwirl of crowded streets. Shock and recoil of traffic. The stock-still brick facade of an old church, against which the waves of people lurch and withdraw. Flare of sunshine down side-streets. Eddies of light in the windows of chemists' shops, with their blue, gold, purple jars, darting colours far into the crowd. Loud bangs and tremors, murmurings out of high windows, whirring of machine belts, blurring of horses and motors. A quick spin and shudder of brakes on an electric car, and the jar of a church-bell knocking against the metal blue of the sky. I am a piece of the town, a bit of blown dust, thrust along with the crowd. Proud to feel the pavement under me, reeling with feet. Feet tripping, skipping, lagging, dragging, plodding doggedly, or springing up and advancing on firm elastic insteps. A boy is selling papers, I smell them clean and new from the press. They are fresh like the air, and pungent as tulips and narcissus. The blue sky pales to lemon, and great tongues of gold blind the shop-windows, putting out their contents in a flood of flame.Night and SleepThe day takes her ease in slippered yellow. Electric signs gleam out along the shop fronts, following each other. They grow, and grow, and blow into patterns of fire-flowers as the sky fades. Trades scream in spots of light at the unruffled night. Twinkle, jab, snap, that means a new play; and over the way: plop, drop, quiver, is the sidelong sliver of a watchmaker's sign with its length on another street. A gigantic mug of beer effervesces to the atmosphere over a tall building, but the sky is high and has her own stars, why should she heed ours?I leave the city with speed. Wheels whirl to take me back to my trees and my quietness. The breeze which blows with me is fresh-washed and clean, it has come but recently from the high sky. There are no flowers in bloom yet, but the earth of my garden smells of tulips and narcissus. My room is tranquil and friendly. Out of the window I can see the distant city, a band of twinkling gems, little flower-heads with no stems. I cannot see the beer-glass, nor the letters of the restaurants and shops I passed, now the signs blur and all together make the city, glowing on a night of fine weather, like a garden stirring and blowing for the Spring. The night is fresh-washed and fair and there is a whiff of flowers in the air.Wrap me close, sheets of lavender. Pour your blue and purple dreams into my ears. The breeze whispers at the shutters and mutters queer tales of old days, and cobbled streets, and youths leaping their horses down marble stairways. Pale blue lavender, you are the colour of the sky when it is fresh-washed and fair... I smell the stars... they are like tulips and narcissus... I smell them in the air.

It has a searchable table of contents and some of her best work. Reading it whet my appetite to buy one of her anthologies. I highly recommend Googling her poem, "A Decade". Billy Collins totally ripped off a lot of that poem.

By Mjolnir This isn't a collection to be plowed through in a day or two but a treat to be savored over weeks. I didn't find any problems with formatting or the transcription problems so common to inexpensive e-book versions of other classics, this was nice.

It is filled with simple and practical advice for knowing and hearing from God. The Holy Spirit can speak to you in may different ways at any time and any place. I have been a born again, spirit filled, christen for over 50 years and as I read this short little book, the Holy Spirit again spoke to me about how to apply the truth of what I was reading to my life. It wasn't as if I didn't already know this particular truth or read about it in the bible many times but just the same the Lord spoke in His soft gentle voice about how I should apply it to my current circumstance. From new Christians to old, I would recommend this book.

Wendt I reviewed this book online and then purchased copies for my entire administrative team. The feedback has been very positive from my administrators. They like the direct and no-nonsense approach in this book. The index offers an easy reference with quick access to good material when difficult questions arise from students. One administrator was happy to get it for use with their own Family. Dr. Reichel has used real-time questions that will help parents and professionals with the age-old problems we all face when confronted with either short or long "Puberty Talks." Her knowledge and experience make this book a timeless tool and a must-have resource that can be used for years to come. I will recommend this to my colleagues and friends. Thank you Dr. Reichel for bringing the puberty issue to all of us at a level that is user-friendly for health professionals, educators and parents. Those interested in providing good information for a complicated and sometimes uncomfortable topic will find this a valued resource when the need arises.

Cook As a health educator, I frequently purchase and assess books about adolescent sexuality health. This book hit the mark. This book is geared for parents, however I would argue that young people will benefit from reading this book on their own as well. The questions presented are actual questions from young people which makes the book ideal for parents and educators to use as a conversation starters with kids. The book is in Q and A format which makes it an "easy read" to quickly learn facts and information. The questions and answers presented address a wide variety of topics, some of which parents may not have even considered. The answers are concise, clear, and medically-accurate. This book is a resource that every parent of pre-pubescent children should have at their fingertips.

The questions and topics are realistic. Today's teens and parents need clear and honest explanations. Parents are faced with more questions than when I was a teen over 30 years ago. Thirty years ago we learned about 'the birds and the bees' and 'your friend.' Today the issues around sexuality and sex have become more complicated. This book is a great ice breaker and I highly recommend this to all parents of pre-teens and up. Kudos to the author for using language that is comfortable and appropriate.

It's almost a year since Noah told Matty they needed to cool it, believing it was the sensible thing to do. After all, they were too intense, and they were both failing uni. Now, with Matty just weeks away from taking up his place at a prestigious London dance academy, Noah is desperate to make the most of the little time they have left. It's only a temporary separation, and they are forever. Or so he'd thought.

I was so over for moon to see that there was another book out with all these guys. I love the bond between the two boys I think they were meant to find each other and fall in love. This was written perfectly and with heart you can see it in every word from beginning to end. I pray we see lots more from them all as they grow and go through life.Matty and Noah are just wonderful and they help each other. I love the little moments between them the cute and romantic ones. They really made me smile so big and talking out loud to them.Cannot wait to see more from them allPlease everyone go buy this and the others and they will reach your heart and stay like they did with me.

It jumps right in to view relationships that are already established and the situations that they face. The main characters, Matty and Noah have the support of family for the most part so not much time is spent dealing with having to gain the acceptance of friends and members of their family. They are past that and are dealing with the growing pains of a developing relationship. It is well thought out and well written. It is indeed all 'British' and uses terms that challenge you to find an Americanized equivalent. Examples would be ' coot' (for chicken) and 'fruit machine' (for slot machine) or 'garden' (for backyard). I found using the common British terms a delightful part of the story. This really is a must read story. Matty and Noah are two characters that you will all in love with.

Staying together through all the challenges and unexpected twists of everyday life can put strain on any relationship, especially when you're young and inexperienced. For the heroes in 'Taking Him On', becoming a couple is only the beginning. They might have taken the important step of confessing their feelings, but they still have a great deal of growing up and soul-searching to endure if they're going to build something that will stand the test of time.Noah refuses to make the same mistake twice. Almost a year ago, he told the boy he loves that they needed to put their relationship on hold and concentrate on their studies. He nearly lost Matty then, and now they're back together, Noah has no intention of letting him go. They have a whole summer to spend in one another's company before Matty moves to London to take up his position at a renowned dance academy. How their fragile romance will fair long-distance, Noah hardly dares contemplate, but until then he is determined to take advantage of every moment.Of course, reality is rarely that straightforward. The summer has scarcely begun when family tragedy, withheld secrets, and miscommunication combine to conspire against them. Noah and Matty's plans of hiking and music festivals, surfing and relaxation, falter before they have even come to fruition. Verbalizing his emotions has never been Noah's strong suit, and Matty tends to retreat inside himself when he is troubled. Unless both boys are able to open up and share their hopes and concerns, it could put their entire future in jeopardy. This is a gentle story, in equal part sweet and sensual, about two young men navigating life's obstacles and learning to trust. Debbie McGowan writes with such warmth and sincerity that I found it impossible not to fall in love with her style as well as her heroes. Anyone can see Noah and Matty are made for each other, so different in temperament, and yet just as strong in their own way. Featuring some likable secondary characters, and the perfect balance of conflict and tenderness, this is a truly wonderful read.

Your Mind and How to Use It: A Manual of Practical Psychology by William Walker Atkinson. Mind is defined as "the faculty or power whereby thinking creatures, feel, think, and will." This definition is inadequate and circular in nature, but this is unavoidable, for mind can be defined only in its own terms and only by reference to its own processes. Perhaps the simplest method of conveying the idea of the existence and nature of the mind is that attributed to a celebrated German teacher of psychology who was wont to begin his course by bidding his students think of something, his desk, for example. Then he would say, "Now think of that which thinks about the desk." Then, after a pause, he would add, "This thing which thinks about the desk, and about which you are now thinking, is the subject matter of our study of psychology." The professor could not have said more had he lectured for a month.

Your Mind and How to Use It: A Manual of Practical Psychology, by William Walker Atkinson

About the Author William Walker Atkinson (December 5, 1862 – November 22, 1932) was an attorney, merchant, publisher, and author, as well as an occultist and an American pioneer of the New Thought movement. He is also known to have been the author of the pseudonymous works attributed to Theron Q. Dumont and Yogi Ramacharaka. Due in part to Atkinson's intense personal secrecy and extensive use of pseudonyms, he is now largely forgotten, despite having written more than 100 books in the last 30 years of his life. (He obtained mention in past editions of Who's Who in America, Religious Leaders of America, and several similar publications—-but these are mostly subscription based, and reflect more on his desire to be known than his contemporary fame.) His works have remained in print more or less continuously since 1900.

Excellent book by Atkinson, excellent Kindle formatting By Aimee Phillips I agree with the other reviewers that this a is a great book for understanding the mind and learning to improve your concentration, thinking and understanding of things going on around you. Even though it's over 100 years old, the writing is still very accessible and understandable.I also want to comment on the exceptional quality of the formatting. So many public domain books are thrown onto Kindle with little or no cleaning up or formatting. This one is clean, no errors, the chapters are linked and it is excellent. Thanks to the publisher!

The book and chapter selection is nice and WAY more than I ever expected. I definitely did not expect to find such book treasure.I would recommend it for anyone.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Perfectly Imperfect By Laura Hix #UPDATED REVIEWHaving gone back and re-read the book a 4th time, there is one small statement in the book that I missed all three times before. Andrews states "The true definition of perfection is an impossible standard to hold ourselves to and can often end up being an unhealthy practice, So, for the purpose of this book, let's settle on the definition of perfect as "the best something can possibly be." We are out to create moments that are as good as they can be, lives as good as they can be, and ourselves....,as good as they can be. - -this being said, changes my review ...completely.. I still hold to the fact, just like Andrews states, there are no perfect moments and that was what nbothered me the most - - Him, Not saying that, but he does. So in that retrospect. I retract my initial review and apologize to Mr. Andrews for not giving the book a 5 star review to begin with. Here is an updated review: (the first is below this)This book tells you exactly how God put us on this earth. In HIS perfect world, living an imperfect life. However, when you go through your days, the way you live it, is how you will see it.PERSPECTIVE - It is all in what you make it.Life is, what you make it. This is where we agreed. If you choose joy, you have joy, if you choose to be sad, you have sad. Even in the very hard times, you can still find happiness. In the death of a family member - all the great memories you have with them. In a car accident - are you okay and are others okay. In a financial disaster - working things out means you are a better stronger person and above all - do you still have family (2nd disclaimer: this is barring any medical complication like depression or anxiety) and we aren't going there, That's a completely different issue. So in true definition of the meaning of perfect, if you choose your perspective, your life will be so much happier because of it. I am so guilty of living with perfection and seeing the disaster I create of my life every single day, I KNOW that I am not in control.Living Intentionally - oh wow. LIVING INTENTIONALLY - choosing to get up to your family instead of for your family, choosing to see that vienna sausages and sardines with an ocean view is really surf and turf with an ocean view!!Blessings, Gifts, good and bad. They make us who we are, because of the life we live when we face each one. Now, not mentioning God at all, or putting our focus back on the Bible and backing it up with verses would have completely solidified my acceptance of these statements BECAUSE of my faith. However, in this book, because of the one statement above. I think it's abundantly clear Andrews's meaning. Even though I had to look up that he was a Christian based on this book.I am going back and changing my review as soon as I can to five full stars, because I can now see the underlying intent of taking the lesson in this book THROUGH your faith is there. I just didn't see it. I am so glad I went back to re-read the book a 4th time.Andrews's one statement that he makes that "ultimately the direction of your life is up to one person - - you" still bothers me stated by itself. looking at the big picture of the book and Andrew's disclaimer of what perfection is on this book alone, I can see this as true statement the way it he said this for the book.I have left my original review below so that some of this makes sense. Thank you for re-reading and coming back on this journey again! Go check out Andrews book at Family Christian Stores here, where you can get this and so many other books on Spirituality and Religion and Faith.my original reviewHave you ever read a sentence that just sends you over the top and makes you think hard about your life? Giving you the mindset to get to complete satisfaction in your life? The concept of the book was great and I will share this in a momentI didn't find that this book aligns with Christian spirituality, as I know it. There were some conflicting phrasing that left me baffled…Now all this being said, I know that the belief behind Andy Andrews’s words in The Perfect Moment, is because of his belief in Christ. However, I didn't know that until I was able to look it up. For me, that makes the book a little jaded. So remember this that the only thing Perfect in our life is God. Perfect Moments, Perfect People, Perfect whatever, just doesn't exist.I 100% believe that Andrews intentions were great with where he goes in this little book.Andy Andrews states - PERFECT, the best something can possibly be. Stop waiting for contentment, comfort, and happiness. The reality is that they are the ones waiting for you..Take a little time to think and reflect deeply about your "perfect moments"I love this. This really hits home! I try so hard to make moments perfect and to make that perfect memory, however, there aren't any perfect memories. I am a sinner and every moment I have is flawed. My own skewed thinking is what gets me into trouble. God gives me every perfect opportunity and I fail miserably because I am a sinner. This, THIS is perfect. What is this? It's your day, it's your life, and it’s your moment. Whatever that moment is? If you choose to let it be perfect. Even with all the imperfections. It can still be bliss! When you choose to be sad, unhappy, angry, whatever emotion you can pull out of a hat, then you will be sad, unhappy, and angry.God gives us a perfect world. We are already here. Our lives, in retrospect, aren't ever perfect however, they are pretty close. When you slow down and remember that your moments can only be as good as you let them be In spite of your emotions on any given day.Choose Joy, Choose Happiness, Choose to be content. Choose Jesus.Andrews gives you three questions to help you determine what those perfect moments in your life will be.What excites you more than anything else, what people do you particularly enjoy being around and If this were your last day, what would you do?After sitting down and thinking about these things. It just solidified what I already knew, I had a long way to go. I was so far from having my life in order and I knew that. I didn't need a book to tell me, but oh the tears fell as I read this precious book this morning. What would you do if this were your last day? No, seriously, “What would you do if this were your last day?"How on earth do you answer that? Get my hair done, go to the spa, and get a massage. Eat a huge steak, and lobster?Or call your children, your grandchildren, spend time with your spouse? In MY honest opinion, this book didn't go into enough detail though in how all of this relates back to Jesus Christ. If I remember correctly, God is not even mentioned once. However, being the strong Christian that I am, I know that there is no perfection without Him.In the book, there is a statement that says ultimately, the direction your life is up to one person you.I don't believe that and will continue to believe that God is in charge of my life and only God. Yes I choose to decide what I do with it, but ultimately without viewing my life, through the eyes of my Lord and Savior, I have failure and sin and messes and life is way too short to live in a hot mess all the time.So for me, the concept of the meaning of the book was great and I loved the way it worded some statements. My faith leads me to believe that there is never a perfect moment.

An introduction to Badiou's philosophical thought and its implications for other humanistic disciplines and the social sciences. There is little doubt that Alain Badiou is one of the most challenging and controversial figures in contemporary philosophy. This volume of essays brings together leading commentators from both sides of the Atlantic to provide an introduction to Badiou’s work through critical studies of his more productive and controversial ideas.Over the course of three decades, his numerous and extensive texts have challenged traditional views on ontology, mathematics, aesthetics, literature, politics, ethics, philosophy, and sexual difference. His texts on Plato, Saint Paul, Pascal, Lacan, Althusser, Heidegger, MallarmeŒ, Pessoa, and Beckett are among the most perceptive and penetrating essays on contemporary philosophical and literary culture. In addition to providing insight into the basic conceptual apparatus of Badiou’s philosophy, the essays also offer a more substantial critical assessment of the import of his main theses for different disciplines.Gabriel Riera is Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature at Princeton University.

Review "This collection of essays is very timely, given the recent upsurge of interest in the work of Alain Badiou in America. A book such as this can make a much-needed contribution to the growing discourse on Badiou."

I got so tired of reading Da'zyer's and Marcus' name it was driving me crazy. The storyline moved a little to fast, just like Da'Zyer and Marcus relationship. Her mother gets on my nerves and the fact that Sarge and Natasha wants Marcus out of the way is so crazy. I'm slowly reading part 2 and I hope that this series is only a trilogy. Not sure how much of the storyline I can take

Omg I feel so sorry for Da'Zyer By Jasmyne Poor Da'Zyer the girl that didn't even know what she was getting herself into by crushing on a nice looking man at work. Lord hell mercy but I hope Marcus can get her out of this situation. Ugghhhh that damn Natasha she gots to go ASAP that girl was the most annoying ass person in this book but I hope she meets Karma after what her scandalous ass did to Marcus and Da'Zyer smh she better leave town on Sunday or Fyer will make her ass disappear for sure and awwww that ending I knew I knew who ice will appear to be now they both can get rid of Sarge snake ass. Lol I really love this book now on to part 2 cause I need to solve more mysteries or find out what will happen in part 2 lets go

The one thing that I find annoying, is that the authors don't spell check, or write the correct word(s) Organisms?? who has an organism?? that would have been an orgasm. While I really liked this book, Desire ( My way of spelling it) just appears to bee toooo clueless, gullible, and if she truly had a ghetto girlfriend/sister, she would have know or heard something about Fire ( again my spelling) when she first heard his name... Marcus as a king of the dope game, was not very smart. I did like the book, and we shall see what happens after the reunion...

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The new SF Women Guide is here! The new SF Women guide is here! I'm SOMEBODY now!!! By Anna Erishkigal This is a totally and thoroughly BIASED review because somebody told me I was mentioned in this book, so I bought it and, lo!!! I -am- mentioned in this book, so I am very happy about that.Okay, now onto the non-biased part. Women authors have always gotten short-shrift in the male-dominated science fiction publishing field. Women make up more than half of science fiction readers, and yet there are so few of us who get recognized by traditional publishing houses and the big award organizations such as the Hugos. For decades, women's science fiction was mis-categorized as romance or women's fiction. They took away our spaceships and scientific devices, put a bare-chested man on our covers, and shelved us in other places in the bookstore or library. 'Women's' issues such as interpersonal relationships, love, marriage, and family are pigeonholed that way, even when it's Sigourney Weaver picking up a pulse cannon and shouting 'get away from her you b!tc#' to a shape-shifting xenomorph on an alien planet. Now science fiction READERS are a particular bunch. Most won't get caught dead in the romance section, so for decades women science fiction writers could only be 'found' if they published under a male pseudonym or used their initials to hide their gender. That is slowly changing, but change comes slowly and you still need to SEEK OUT science fiction tales written by women writers. In THIS guide you will find listed eighty (80) fine female science fiction writers, a brief history of their work, and Sandra's impressions as she read the books of all the authors in this listing.
