An excellent guidebook for transforming your thinking and emotions By David Mills “Rethink it!” is a superbly-written tool kit for anyone hoping to overcome problems of anger, depression, jealousy and other emotional maladies. It is written by Michael Cohen, who authored the bestseller “The Power of Accepting Yourself.” “Rethink it!” teaches the reader how to transform his or her thinking and behavior — and therefore how to transform dysfunctional emotions into healthy, rational emotions. This book is especially enjoyable and beneficial for the average, lay reader.There are several factors that I particularly like about this book. First, it is indeed practical. Michael Cohen goes out of his way to write in a clear and entertaining way. He frequently enumerates (1,2,3,4,…) the precise steps you need to take to surmount a specific psychological block or affliction. This might be a problem with dieting or smoking or drug abuse. He even covers such issues as fear of blushing, fear of embarrassment, panic attacks, and common phobias like agoraphobia (page 49). He also reveals his own techniques for relaxation and staying at peace with yourself — techniques which do not depend on any particular religious belief or affiliation. The book is applicable to literally anyone. Cohen reiterates the phrase "Rethink it!" throughout the text of the book to encourage the reader to reevaluate bad psychological habits and to fix them. He shows you exactly how to accomplish your behavioral and emotional goals.Yet another factor I loved about this book was Cohen’s explanations as to how and why we develop psychiatric issues to begin with. Cohen describes how today’s dysfunctional emotions may have been, at one point in human history, beneficial or even life-saving (page 22). But Cohen points out why today’s modern society no longer requires us to suffer death-like fears about what are, today, non-threatening situations, such as social disapproval. I must say that I found Cohen’s explanations much more plausible and satisfying than a lot of Freud’s wild and complicated speculation about the origin of human emotional suffering. But as Cohen points out here and elsewhere: the origin of your problem is not as important as the cure — a cure which this book provides to those willing to employ its suggestions.Page 85 begins a brief section on what Cohen calls “practicing mindfulness.” As in other parts of the book, Cohen details how to concentrate on the moment at hand and on your empirical surroundings, rather than focusing fruitlessly on vague anxieties about “dangers” that will never actually occur.I have never met Michael Cohen. But I know from roundabout observation that he is a man who definitely practices what he preaches. He is a kind, generous man of a peaceful, happy demeanor. By Lloyd G Sometimes the most useful tips in life come in the form of a simple message. This easy to read book delivers a simple message in a clear and easy to read way. Being positive is easier than it sounds and easy to say and hard to achieve. This book helps to narrow that gap in thinking. Well worth a read.

Makes light of problems by suggesting you should just give yourself positive self-talk and it will all go away By Sunshine on a Rainy Day SUMMARY: This book is broken down into three parts: 1) Be Your Own Best Friend, 2) Relax and Heal Negative Emotions and 3) Change your Behaviors. The first section talks about building your own self esteem through positive self thought and self talk. The second section deals with specific problems such as anxiety, depression, and jealousy and techniques that can be used to overcome them. The final sections deals with behavioral issues such as weight loss, smoking, and blushing.REVIEW: First, Cohen spends a good portion of this book explaining what the problems are in a classic psych textbook way. For example, under anxiety, he describes each type of possible anxiety you could have. I found this to be incongruent with the rest of this book. It felt too textbook-like for this simple guide.As a right-brained person, I have never had success with "think your problems away" type strategies. Has anyone, I wonder? Cohen's theory is that if you can look at your problem for what it is and turn your negative thinking into positive thinking, then it will be all good. For example: For anxiety, he suggests you write down times when you have had anxiety, write down your negative thoughts, look for a pattern, then rethink those negative thoughts into positive ones. He also suggests using the stop method when you go into panic by saying things like "stop this nonsense." "It is the catastrophic thoughts and feelings you are silencing, not yourself." I find this to be unhealthy behavior. A person should never separate himself from his own feelings. They are important and vital to the moment. The rest of his advice is to practice relaxation, eat well, exercise, and don't avoid your fears.I found this book to be over simple with problems and to make it seem like simply giving yourself positive self talk would make everything cheery and well. The book was short, but I felt like it needed a lot more explanation and examples of the techniques rather than the problems to be helpful to the every day reader.NOTE: I received a free e-reader copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
