A More Thorough Book on the Mass is Hard to Come By By TJ Burdick -A 75 source Bibliography.-Just under 1,000 Biblical references.-200+ references from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.-1 thorough book that weaves all of the aforementioned stats into stellar cohesion.The Biblical Roots of the Mass by Thomas Nash is a complete resource for those who as the question: And the Mass? Where do you find that in the Bible?Starting with the Old Testament, Nash delves deep into the Jewish customs and practices as laid out by Levitical law. He visits and revisits the prophecies of the Old Covenant and those of the New making striking comparisons that result in a consistent synthesis of how and why we celebrate the Mass. From Adam to Abraham and Christ and the Apostles, Nash provides the most comprehensive and thorough Biblical synthesis regarding the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.This book is essentially a study guide. At the begging of each chapter, the author provides the reader with several background readings from the Catechism and the Bible. They are meant to set a firm foundation for the reader before delving into the reasons for their being.He then guides us in a thorough explanation as to how each verse and commentary coincide with the most Holy Liturgy, puling from other resources including the Church Fathers and Papal documents, as well as contemporary Bible scholars like Scott Hahn and Mark Shea.At the end of each chapter, Nash provides study questions making this an ideal book for RCIA candidates and book clubs. Nash.The Biblical Roots of the Mass successfully sets out to show that the Catholic Mass is of divine origin.Begin At the BeginningNash begins with a deep examination of the Old Covenant, beginning with Creation itself in Genesis with the tree of life and how it ultimately points to the Eucharist. I liked how Nash begins at the beginning and in each chapter lists out the relevant Scripture passages for the topics he covers. Then at the end of each chapter he has discussion questions for a small group, RCIA class, or Bible study.This book is dense. It is not a book you read in an evening. In fact, I read it during my weekly Holy Hour of adoration over the course of a few months.Having written books myself, I have an appreciation for Nash's work here: the level of research and scholarship required to write even one chapter of his book must have been incredible.In Depth ExplanationsFor instance, I have always wanted a thorough and clear explanation of how the mysterious figure of Melchizedek relates to Christ and His priesthood. The allusions in the Bible to this association are few but obviously of great significance to Jewish people at the time of Christ and to the first Christians. Nash delves into this relationship and elucidates the background and importance of it.From an apologetics standpoint, Nash answers the common Protestant objections to the Mass and the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Such arguments, like "Catholics re-crucify Christ every Mass", he analyzes, rebuts, and then goes one level deeper in explaining why they don't work and what the actual Church's teaching is on the subject. Another one he tackles is whether and how Christ could have been present in bread after consecrating it during the Last Supper.The Biblical Roots of the Mass is an eye-opening book to understanding how the central sacrament of our Faith is directly connected to all the major events of salvation history.

" To better understand the Catholic Mass By Martin Pitsitck In this in-depth and well-researched study, Tom Nash shows the overwhelming scriptural evidence for the fulfillment of the Old Covenant in the New Covenant, which culminates and is celebrated in the Catholic Mass. He shows us that God did not start from scratch with Jesus. Rather, everything that God did prior to sending His Son to us has lead up to and is fulfilled in Christ. When Jesus instituted the Mass at the Last Supper, it pulled together and fulfilled all of the ways that God had taught His People to worship for millennia. In "The Biblical Roots of the Mass" Tom Nash traces these connections throughout salvation history. His explanations often highlight and contrast how Protestants and Catholics approach certain topics that relate to the Mass. I believe that it is safe to say that he convincingly answers the question: "Where is that found in the Bible?" To better understand the Catholic Mass, we need simply to probe more deeply into Scripture. Topics covered include: the various types of priesthood in the Old and New Covenant, the Jewish feasts of Passover and the Day of atonement, the Temple and various types of sacrifice and worship in the Old Covenant, the significance of Jesus as the "Lamb of God," Calvary, the Last Supper, the Exodus, the Bread of Life Discourse of Jesus in the 6th chapter of the Gospel of John, the Book of Hebrews and Revelation, Paul's epistles (examining close to 1,000 passages from the Bible in all). This systematic study is made more accessible by the way he begins each chapter with a list of "background reading," and then concludes the chapter with questions that could be used in a small group discussion or bible study. In addition, he includes both a scripture and a subject index to enable one to quickly find a particular topic or explanation of scripture. While not a "light read," this book is rich with scriptural insights that will help you to "connect the dots" to see how the Mass truly is the source, heart, foundation and summit of Christian life.
