About the Author Geboren am 16.02.1497 in Bretten, gestorben am 19.04.1560 in Wittenberg. Melanchton war seit 1514 Magister und Lehrer für alte Sprachen in Tübingen. Er kam 1518 nach Wittenberg und war ein enger Mitarbeiter von Martin Luther und hat an allen wichtigen Religionsgesprächen teilgenommen. By frank william sonnek and it is also the most rewarding for those who make the effort.It is important to read it in context.This book is the Lutheran response to Roman Catholic Thomist Natural Law theology.It is a direct challenge and rejection of it.St Thomas was the most eminent disciple of St Augustine and also Aristotle.There is no theologian who was ever so brilliant.The Lutheran Theologians, led by Melancthon and Luther, take up the aristotelian philosophical categories overlayed upon christian theology by first Augustine then taken up by St Thomas , both guided by Aristotle. This writting is a careful rearranging and redefinition of those categories to re align from Augustine-aristotle back to St Paul.Words such as original sin, law, natural law, concupiscence, etc are all completely redefined by the Lutherans away from Thomas and Augustine back to St Paul, while remaining in the conceptual framework of Aristotle as the common basis for reasoning and organizing of ideas and for Lutherans to engage the scholastics on common ground.Next to the Small Catechism of Dr Martin Luther, this Lutheran Confession stands as the linchpin of Lutheran Confessions and thelogy. The later Formula of Concord simply cannot be understood without first thoroughly digesting this writing.My recommendation is to take the time to personally try to outline the argumentative threads in each article. It is sheer brilliance.. it does not turn its back on scholasticism, but rather enters its world completely and implodes its errors from within.The real difference here between Roman Catholic Thomist Scholasticism and Lutheranism is not justification by faith alone. The start of departure is the definition of what Original Righeousness and the Image of God consists of.Lutherans: Original Righeousness = Image of God = faith in the Works of Christ .Rome: Original Righeousness = Conformity to the Divine Law of God . It is this point where Rome and John Calvin agree and the Lutherans do not.So the restoration of the Image of God and Original Righeousness for Lutherans is , alone Christ, who is the end of the Law for obtaining righeousness. Once righeousness of faith is restored, the Law is no longer needed. The Law, incarnate in Christ, becomes existentially who we are, incarnate now in new man.For Rome and Calvin Christ is the vehicle to return to..... the Law. Ultimately then the Gospel serves the Law.

The book explains much of how to set a clear course with faith and belief. This is the confession that truly made Luther's protest into a way to follow.
