“After four years of hiding my faith from my family, I knew that it was time. I wrote with shaky hands, ‘Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. I refuse to deny him….’ There was no turning back now. I had to get out of that house if I wanted to live. Was this worth risking everything for? Yes.”   Rifqa Bary grew up in a devout Muslim home, obediently following her parents’ orders to practice the rituals of Islam. But God was calling her to freedom and love. He was calling her to true faith. He was calling her to give up everything.   Leaving Islam for Christianity cost her more than she imagined but gave more than she could have dreamed.   Hiding in the Light is the story of Rifqa’s remarkable spiritual journey from Islam to Christianity. It is also the untold story of how she ran from her father’s threats to find refuge with strangers in Florida, only to face a controversial court case that reached national headlines. Most of all, it is the story of a young girl who made life-changing sacrifices to follow Jesus—and who inspires us to do the same.

Hiding in the Light: Why I Risked Everything to Leave Islam and Follow Jesus, by Rifqa Bary

Review “Rifqa Bary’s story is a powerful testimony to standing for the truth in the face of many difficulties and tall odds. In the words of this young woman who has already been through so much, we are painted a picture of stark cultural contrast—that of slavery and liberty, duty and love, and bondage and freedom. As much as anything, this is a story about the first freedom upon which America was built—the freedom to believe and live one’s life according to those beliefs. Rifqa’s inspiring story reminds us why we must continue to stand for faith and freedom!” —Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council “Rifqa Bary’s story unveils God as the Father to the fatherless whose pursuit of His children is fiercely beautiful. Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down. She invites readers to walk beside her on her fascinating road and to see the God she saw when she said her very brave yes to Jesus.” —Sara Hagerty, author of Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet “An extraordinary glimpse into the faith of a Christ-follower and the sovereignty of God. Rifqa’s story informs, inspires, and empowers.” —Max Lucado, pastor and author “This is truly an inspirational story of a young Muslim girl’s journey into the arms of Jesus and the discovery that Jesus is everything that she had been looking for. Her heartbreaking journey is hard to fathom, and yet her suffering was the one thing that led her to Jesus. This story will give you not only insight into what it means for a Muslim to convert to Christianity and the heavy price associated with that, but also the importance of Christians breaking through the stereotypes and reaching out to Muslims in love.” —Naghmeh Abedini, wife of imprisoned pastor Saeed Abedini “Not only does Rifqa Bary’s story bring to light key tenets of Islam we so need to understand, it will show you the courage true faith provides. This is a book you will finish in a hurry, as you’ll want to know what happens next! Thank you, dear Rifqa, for counting all as loss for the sake of our Savior.” —Kay Arthur, cofounder of Precept Ministries International and author of When the Hurt Runs Deep “Enrapturing heart and spirit, Rifqa masterfully shares insights into immigrant Muslim life, tearing the veil of mystery with the power of the gospel. Although chronicling her own account, her words echo the cries of young Muslim women worldwide, and manifest on each page is the signature of our sovereign God. Rifqa’s story is authored by Jesus—come read what He’s written.” —Dr. Nabeel Qureshi, best-selling author of Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus and speaker with Ravi Zacharias International Ministries “I hope you can feel the gentleness of Rifqa’s heart as I did when I read her story—I love it! In my own experience as a child, I had hidden in a cocoon of despair and lived with the brutality of loneliness—I understand how she felt. When you give your heart to Jesus Christ, you have to be brave. I was so touched by the sadness and the joy of someone who never denied Jesus.” —Nicky Cruz, evangelist and author of Run, Baby, Run “Rifqa is my hero, and this book details her amazing story never before told in its entirety. Even though it was all over the national news, if you thought you knew what really happened—think again. I stayed up all night reading this book. Hiding in the Light is a testament to what happens when one ordinary person is touched by the one extraordinary Savior of the World.” —John Stemberger, president and general counsel, Florida Family Policy Council

About the Author Fatima Rifqa Bary, a native of Sri Lanka, moved with her family to the United States at the age of eight. She secretly converted from Islam to Christianity at age twelve. When her family discovered her secret four years later, she ran away from home—and her story made national headlines. Still living in an undisclosed location, Rifqa’s passions are prayer, missions, and people. She also cherishes long talks with loved ones over coffee and eating lots of chicken curry.

A Heart-Rending, Gospel-Fueled Insight into the Immense Plight of a Young Muslim Woman By Nabeel Qureshi My wife and I read this book a few months ago when I was asked for an endorsement. We had planned on skimming, but after reading for a few minutes, there was no way we could put the book down. We read the book starting in the early evening, continuing into the night, until we finished it in the morning. Yes, I shed tears for Rifqa - I felt like she was my little sister, and that she had been alone for years. It was the extremes of physical, social, and emotional suffering that forged her intimacy with Jesus. And I do mean the extremes. Rifqa suffered more than almost all of us ever will, before the age of 18, for the sake of her God and Savior.Rifqa is the real deal. My heart broke for her as she fought for faith and conscience at an age when many girls are tossed and torn by identity issues and consumerism. She had to fight these battles under the intensely critical scrutiny of international media spotlight. As you go deeper into her story, you see the true depths of her struggles. The curveballs keep coming, to the very last page.Read this book! Get a glimpse into Islam, immigrant life, the plight of many Muslim women, the dark side of Honor and Shame cultures, an incident of real injustice in the justice system, and the cost a young Muslim woman had to pay to receive Jesus here in America. Ultimately and most beautifully, throughout Rifqa's story, it wasn't she who was at the center, but Jesus and His Gospel. I can't recommend it more highly.

43 of 47 people found the following review helpful. The light shines through. By Debra D Hoefs I can't explain how I felt in reading this book. I thought I would feel sorry for this young woman, but instead I want what she has. This amazing relationship with God through Christ. I wasn't expecting to be challenged and inspired in my own walk with Jesus. The scripture, the prayers, the telling of God's perfect timing was amazing. It was not a Story that has a Hallmark ending, it's a Story of life and its realities and how Jesus can bring joy and peace to all who call upon His name no matter the circumstances.

Even after finishing the book I still ponder on choices that were made in the beginning. I am just perplexed but at the same time it brought on reality because as humans we are not perfect. It showed how our emotions can sometimes shadow the truth. We have a desire for something more but that want can cover what is real. We can see and yet be blind. This book was very thought provoking if you carry the concept into other areas of ones life. We can have it all but not even realize what we have at that point in time. It was more than the intimacy even though the moments were beautiful. This book is one to read that brings to you romance but not without the reality of life to bring it back in balance. Good job.

He was to soft had a woman ruling him, and after the way she talked to esme and he did nothing, then she left and come back and he just took her back had me cussing. Not sure about the ending cause he left her after realising she was faking everything again and esme just took him back. I was like Hell No. Esme was the only one I kind of tolerated.

The author lets you experience their point of views with no filter and allows you to place yourself in their shoes. The arrangement allows you to read it with ease and retain the messages of each chapter connecting the previous to the next. The concepts explores the love one has for family, friends, themselves, and others, as well as it gives personal experiences in a very poetic way. I felt as if the writer placed their life in a book of poetry that taught the reader to except life for what it is and how to live with optimism as your main source of energy even when faced with doubt or oppression. There are many subjects in this book that I can relate to, because sometimes I feel like "Will" and I understand the purity of children and animals when it comes to energy. This is a GREAT book and I recommend it to all readers who are looking for an uplifting, truthful, and inspirational reading. I will be waiting for the authors next work!!TEC

By Michael Lynes You Ain't Hungry Until I'm Starving by Vid Lamonte' Buggs Jr is an eclectic read, full of personal vignettes, original poetry, comments on famous cultural icons and deep introspection. This is a kind of 'daily reader' inspirational or thought provoking work. Not meant to be the final word on a particular subject but rather to give the reader an individual point of view from which he or she can continue the 'conversation' and derive new insights.I read this book in short sessions - it is not a narrative - and each piece can stand on its own while also forming part of the complete experience.I gave it a rating of four stars, mainly due to its well written and clear formatting as well as its thought provoking treatment of some sensitive and little discussed subject matter.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book By Andrea Bullington "You Ain't Hungry Until I'm Starving" was hard to put down. I found myself able to relate to a lot that the Author was writing about! He wrote about real life situations, emotions, and perspectives. I loved how the book was broke down into sections from meal courses and had famous quotes. I thought that was unique. The Author is trying to show the world to look at things from different perspectives and I agree. They way the book was written was poetic and unique. The layout flowed and was easy to follow. Excellent read. Its one of those books you'll go back and read mulitple times because it is inspirational and many people will be able to relate.

What is heaven on earth? The answer lies in this true story of one young man's journey to find hope and purpose with the help of an unlikely teacher--a compassionate and wise old nun, whom the world had long-forgotten. By the time Harvard-educated John Schlimm turned 31 years old, he had worked with some of the biggest superstars in Nashville and served under the most powerful people in the White House. But something was missing. His life had come to a standstill, lost in a whirl of questions about belonging, faith, rejection, and purpose. He soon decides to return to his small-town roots in search of a new beginning.Returning home, John meets 87-year-old Sister Augustine, the beguiling self-taught artist-in-residence at the ceramic shop on the sprawling grounds of the local 150-year-old convent. John is instantly bowled over by Sister's quiet grace and vision. Before long, his weekly visits to Sister's shop become a master's class in the meaning of life, love, humility, and second chances. As she directed him on the road to self-discovery and salvation, John returned the favor by putting Sister Augustine on the front page of newspapers and showing his friend that her life still had one very important and unexpected final chapter yet to go.In Five Years in Heaven, John shares the wisdom, humor, grace, and inspiration he experienced during his hundreds of visits with Sister Augustine. Five Years in Heaven reminds us that we can find love and joy in the most unlikely of places, and that the building blocks of peace and happiness are always within our reach.

By Russell Fanelli The title of John Schlimm's new book, Five Years in Heaven, may give some people the false idea that John has actually visited heaven, when in reality what he has experienced is what some might call "a little slice of heaven." From the first moment John was introduced to Sister Augustine in the ceramics shop of St Joseph's Monastery in John's home town of St. Marys PA, he knew that a special and unique person had entered his life. The year is 2002 and John is thirty-one years old. He has had experience working for Tipper Gore in Washington D.C. and Naomi Judd in Nashville, but none of that experience would prepare him for the astonishing new world he was about to enter. Are there saints on earth? John would say that if being a saint means living a holy and blessed life than yes, there are saints among us and Sister Augustine, now sadly dead, was one of them. For five years John visited Sister Augustine, an eighty-seven year old Benedictine nun, and helped her promote her wonderful ceramic pieces. John, an artist himself, realized immediately that Sister Augustine was an impressive talent. But as important as the ceramics were to John, far more important were the lessons in living imparted by Sister Augustine to him, not simply in words, but in the very manner of her life. That last point about lessons in living is important to note because John's book is subtitled "The Unlikely Friendship That Answered Life's Greatest Questions." Readers of this review should know up front that while this statement may have been true for John, that it may or may not be true for the rest of us.What, then, are some of these lessons? "Embracing the joys and the sorrows of life with gratitude; forgiving those who have hurt us and seeing them as teachers; connecting with our fellow living beings through love and patience; opening our hearts and minds to tap into our true potential and gifts, then using these gifts to help others and the world...." This summary is incomplete; John learned many other lessons from Sister Augustine as he watched her work and talked with her about himself, his goals and objectives, and the frustration working in Washington D.C. and Nashville that brought him back at thirty-one to his home town to start again.Sister Augustine was a great listener who not only accepted this young man who had come into her life, but treasured her interactions with him. For John Schlimm those five years of being listened to and understood were five years in heaven, and I think many of us would agree that this gift of listening and love by a woman approaching the end of her life would be welcomed and appreciated by all of us.From first to last Five Years in Heaven is a well told story that engages our attention and, in the end, genuinely touches our emotions. Sister Augustine lived one precious day at a time and any day for her would have been a good day to die and join her Savior in Heaven. Like John, we knew the end would come, but that did not make it any easier for us. That said, John has left us a memory of an exceptional woman who lived a holy and saintly life. We won't soon forget her.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Sweet story, but a bit too sweet. By melissa John Schlimm's book called 'Five Years in Heaven' is a compilation of stories which take place during a period of time he spent with a nun who lived in St. Joseph's Monastery in Pennsylvania (which has since closed). And while I appreciate the sentiment of his tales, his writing lacks something to be desired."The snow was scalloping the porch's edge in undulating patterns, as if Mother Nature were gentling [sic] wielding a wide brush dipped in ivory paint." Or this one: "The snow crunched like toasted bread crumbs under my feet as I hurried toward the long porch leading to the shop."Snow is snow. A writer doesn't need to tell us what snow is like in order to draw us into the book. Now, I don't intend to be cruel, but while the premise of the book is sound---Schlimm's relationship with Sister Augustine and the insights she shared with him about life, the real truths are lost in his effusive writing. Forget all the descriptions. Get to the heart of the talks and stop the flowery writing. He holds the story together well, but with all his endless light-hearted comments about her cat, Blitzen, and overly-descriptive sentences, the urge to throw the book was strong.Way too precious for me. I did appreciate his sincerity, but some strict editing over his dialogue would've made the book more serious reading and less like a schoolboy bragging on his favorite teacher.(i received this book free to review from waterbook/multnomah)

Nice, But Not Exciting By Reader from Washington, DC "Five Years in Heaven: The Unlikely Friendship That Answered Life's Greatest Questions" is a memoir of a friendship between an 87-year-old nun and a 31-year-old writer and publicist whose career crash had driven him back to his small, rural hometown.I'm an Anglo-Catholic Episcopalian, so I was looking forward to see what kind of spiritual advice Sister Augustine would give John Schlimm. While their friendship seems to have been wonderful for both of them -- she encouraged him to successfully restart his career and he publicized her ceramics, making her regionally famous -- the spiritual and psychological advice she gave him didn't seem that unusual, didn't answer life's greatest questions -- though it did answer many of Schlimm's questions -- and frankly was a little on the dull side. For example, pages and pages are devoted to Sister Augustine's cats -- I like cats, but briefer descriptions would have worked better.Sister Augustine and Schlimm shared common interests as artists and teachers, but reading their conversations is like sitting in a room where you can hear a happily-married couple discussing their daily concerns in the next room -- whose turn is it to mow the lawn? The couple is clearly very happy and deeply intertwined in their shared interests, but their conversations may not have much relevance for the listener's life.

In Love, Again, Eve Pell beautifully and thoughtfully concludes that life experience adds dimensions to the art of connection - and that we all stand to learn something from unexpected romance. How do old people meet new loves? Eve Pell was 68 when she convinced a friend to set her up with Sam Hirabayashi. Ten years her senior, Sam, a fellow runner, was handsome and sweet. Soon Eve and Sam were plunged into a giddy romance that began with a movie date. "It was crazy," Pell writes. "It was wonderful."

Pell wrote about their romance in a New York Times Modern Love column and received a wave of responses from people who recognized their own stories in hers. This thing, this late-in-life love: It's growing, it's everywhere, and it's transformative. In staggering numbers, old people are meeting and falling in love - in senior living facilities, in retirement homes, in bars, in grocery stores, on cruise ships, on the Internet - brazenly, quietly, unexpectedly. People once written off as too old for intimacy are having romances, beginning intense affairs once thought to be for the young.

Part memoir, part journey to a new frontier, Love, Again is illuminating and heartwarming. Speaking with poets and artists, a retired nurse and a retired coach, environmentalists, philanthropists, and teachers - couples whose partners' ages range from 61 to 96 - Pell reports on their relationships, from saying hello to knowing they'd found the one, from blending routines and traditions to overcoming judgments and challenges. These widows, widowers, divorcés, and never-marrieds open up about old love versus young, the thrill of sex, and the looming shadow of mortality. At the core of this book is wisdom: what we all can learn from the experience, regardless of age.

  • Fall in love with who someone is now - not who they someday might be.
  • Always be honest, but don't feel pressure to share everything.
  • And most of all: The heart can continue to expand.

By DC Guy Eve Pell is not a stranger to me.I read her "Modern Love" column in the NY Times a few years ago, where she spoke of her meeting a man, so unlike any of the men she had ever experienced in her life, married to or otherwise. And beyond meeting this man, within a year, deciding that this man would change her life more profoundly, than any before him, and so within a short time, she married him.But to many, such events were the plot lines of romance novels for men and women four to five decades younger.Because all of us, thanks to western society's cultural "programming" think of a single woman of 68 and a single man of 78, meeting, falling in love, getting married two years later, then leading enriching active lives, as a low probability and or impossible event. As in "act your age grandma or grandpa," as in act elderly, as in act out the remaining years of your life as a dried up emotionless prune, as many, young and almost old, in our society would opine. Thanks to Eve Pell's personal experience of teaming up with her "Sam," for very deep and fulfilling intimacy with happiness in the autumn of her life, as well as his, we who are past 60, are blessed. After her beloved Sam passed, Eve Pell set off to find out if she had experienced something rare, or something common, and what shape or form creating a shared intimate life together with another person would take when both are post sixty. As a result, she tracked down others, post 60, who had found each other and created intimate, enriching lives together with caring, character and grace for each other and the world around them.Such events, as Eve Pell points out come only with the wisdom that personal experience with the ups and downs of life gives to anyone now post 60.In fact it is with that wisdom, based on experience, that makes for such a rich and shared life, that many younger, may never find.Yes, with the substantial experience of life, for any post 60 year old, if you open up your heart and your mind, you can find that someone special and the special you create together may only be because of your collective experiences in life prior to teaming up.This is a totally inspirational book.Because with Eve Pell's clear and concise writing, woven in sections between the life stories of older couples, who found each other late in life, you can find out what everyone written of in this book, post 60 has come to understand. The "understand" is about life and how to live it with love, care and affection for their partner, to the fullest with the time that is left. And with such understanding, such post 60 couples can look past the reality of no longer being a 20-30 year olds and making it work, perhaps better than it ever did, in prior relationships where with their youth, they squandered many opportunities for living much more deeply intimate, caring , exciting lives with a partner.

By Alice Bingham Gorman Love Again: the Wisdom of Unexpected Romance is a treasure of wonderful older-age love stories: warm, funny, intelligent, sensitive, heart-rending, and up-lifting. Who could imagine at age 18 that at age 68 he or she would fall in love and that his or her heart would beat every bit as wildly! But, as witnessed by all the couples in Eve Pell’s revealing and inspiring book, it happens. In fact, as she discovered in her own story, at an older age the heart is not fettered by the problems of raising kids or struggling to be successful in business or any of the challenges of young marrieds. The heart is free to do nothing but enjoy life with a spouse or partner or lover of choice for as long as possible. This book is the perfect Valentine’s gift for anyone at any age with a heart!

It was such happy surprise when the book arrived in my mailbox. The book arrived at just the right time in my life. I am 42 years old and have been single for over 7 years. I found myself divorced after being married and in a relationship with the same man for nearly 23 years. I had just about giving up hope of ever finding love again when I received this book. It is as if there was a message in there for me. Eve Pell has renewed my hopes and make me believe that love is possible again at any age. This book is a must read for person who finds themselves single whether it is from divorce, death, or from never having found someone to love throughout their lives. There are lessons in there that both men and women can learn from. The stories of every single one of the couples were heartfelt, and I have learned quite a bit from the experiences and advise shared by all of the couples. I love how well written and organized Love, Again was. It is so nice to know that no matter how old we are, the possibility exist that we might find love again, even in our later years, unexpectedly. I really enjoyed reading the book!

You won’t find Birch Lake on a Wisconsin road map, but after you finish this book you’ll want to go there. Maybe stop in at Aunt Flo’s diner for a cheeseburger and then up Main Street (you can see where they repaired the hole left by the exploding elephant) to the Bluegill Bar for a cold Bruenig’s Lager. The grumpy looking little guy on the last bar stool might be Uncle Al. You could ask if he’ll guide you on a fishing trip but if you aren’t nice to him, he’ll probably tell you to go to hell. You could go down below the dam and cast around the wreckage of the quarter million dollar pickup truck. There’s not much to do in this north woods Shangri La and most of the people are really nice. Avoid Ethel Warburton–she’s a bitch. Birch Lake is set in the state of Wisconsin – but it really exists in the state of mind. Joel Vance has lived in this sun lit little town for decades. Come along with Bobby, his alter ego, and find out what goes on behind the scenes (and often right in front of them).

By jennifer senger The Exploding Elephant , a novel by author Joel Vance is set in the small resort town Birch Lake, Wisconsin. The narrator is a teenager named Bobby. He begins the introduction of his hometown by following his uncle's labrador around town to see where he went and what he did. That tour completed, Bobby took us on many adventures and misadventures involving his many relatives, town characters, and a few strangers. Many of the events were very funny but even Birch Lake was not immune to the social and political ills that permeate our society today. When Michelle Obama accepts Bobby's invitation to speak at his commencement all hell breaks loose!I found the Exploding Elephant a delightful book and my time reading it was ell spent.

By HappyMomof2 I was up into the early morning hours reading this book. I didn't want to put it down. There are just enough twists and turns, surprises, and drama to make this a great read. The characters are intriguing and I couldn't help but wonder what REALLY goes on behind closed doors in the church. One of the best books I've read recently and would highly recommend.

It might possibly be the worst written book that I have ever read. The grammar was horrible. The spelling mistakes were numerous. I mean spell check is on most devices, computers, etc. What woman goes to a drugstore to buy a "paternity" test to see if she's pregnant? Please, please if this was self-published, have someone else at least proof-read your next book.

Even though Little was a complete JERK, I never believed he was a murderer. He was man of God, but he was WEAK. He is not alone. Still, I never anticipated the ending. Good job!!! There is no "perfect murder" so I'm awaiting Book 2 to see what happens with Carla.
