Deep and Meaningful Look at Life/Death/Family/ and Love By poemgirl I have read all of Kate Braestrup's book and up until this one, her first book, Here If You Need Me: A True Story, was my favorite. This one, however, touched me deeply. In between relating stories about the accidents and deaths she and her fellow Maine Wardens have to deal with, Braestrup intertwines her own experiences as a mother, wife, and chaplain. And all of these stories are ones that any parent, (any person, really ) who has ever cared for and worried about another human being can identify with. No one is immune from life's heartaches, but God's grace and love helps us muddle through. I have already recommended this book to friends and family.

Braestrup's third memoir is superb By Paul Allaer "Anchor & Flares: A Memoir of Motherhood, Hope & Service" (2015 publication; 335 pages) is the latest memoir from Maine Game Warden Service chaplain and Unitarian Universalist minister Kate Breastrup. I admit that I was not familiar with her before, and so even though this is I believe her third memoir, it is the first of hers that I've read.As the book opens, we get are introduced to the author's family situation. Turns out that her husband, a Maine State Trooper, was tragically killed in a car accident in the mid-nineties, but that she eventually found a new partner, and among the both of them, they have six children to raise. The book is a reflection of the hopes and fears of a mother as she guides her four kids and two stepkids through youth and young adulthood as best as she can. The best protracted story line (if you can call it that) relates to her oldest, Zach (whom by my calculations is the same age as my oldest), who confesses to be interested in joining the military, and the conflicted feelings that generates for the author, whose father also was in the military. "The mission and purpose of the United States military is not to provide job training or career opportunities for young people. It is not to foster social bonds between a diverse set of Americans, nor is it to serve as a vehicle for desirable social change--even if it has at times done those things. The mission and purpose of the military is to fight and win wars." Apart from the reflections on her family's life, the author also relays a number of heartbreaking stories involving her duties as the chaplain for the state of Maine's Game Warden Service (think: when someone drowns in a lake, or someone get accidentally shot during hunting, etc.).Throughout the book, the author brings these memories and reflections on life with respect and charity, and mostly, with a love of life and family. She makes it easy for us to relay to those stories. They are not unique, even if they certainly are interesting. Reading this book makes me realize how universal those feelings are. I can't wait to check out Braestrup's previous memoirs. Meanwhile, if you are, like me, a fan of non-fiction and in particular memoirs, you will "Achor & Flares" is irresistible, and it comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

She is a fabulous storyteller who can share deep emotional topics but often presents them with her unique perspective. Once again, another book so very well done, Kate.

By Terry Tyler Reviewed by me as part of Rosie Amber's Review TeamThis is an intelligently constructed, fairly complex drama that deals with the changing social attitudes of England since the 1970s, written from the points of view of three main characters. It opens with Roger, who has written a book about a recently deceased soap star. He meets a young woman who claims to be the soap star's daughter, which opens up old wounds and secrets from four decades before. Roger is forced to face up to his own guilt about his part in the cover up, which involved family friends and a local MP, and deal with the impact of the revelations on his own relationship.The book covers many decades, with nostalgia-worthy details in each. I was a teenager in the 1970s, and this book did make me think about how far we have moved on in terms of prejudice and 'the permissive society', as it was called back in those days; sometimes for good, sometimes not so much. As the story goes on, suggestions of historic sexual harrassment are uncovered—very topical and sinister.I found the subject matter quite interesting to read about; after all, soap operas and dramas themselves are so often based around hidden affairs and secret offspring; you can't go far wrong with a bit of family intrigue of this type! I'm afraid, though, that I found it all a bit flat. The main problem was the dialogue; each character used similar vocabulary, tone, mood and rhythms of speech; I kept forgetting who was who because they all spoke in the same way, the dialogue being mostly used to deliver facts, as was much of the narrative, as opposed to telling a compelling story with atmosphere and emotion. A trait I've noticed in many self-published mystery type books with intricate plots is that characters have lengthy conversations in which they discuss the whys and wherefores of a situation, in order to impart chunks of information to the reader, but if the characters have not leapt off the page and become real people, it's hard to care. I also felt that some of the references to social media and popular culture were a little forced.Having said all that, the writing did improve when it moved onto the second character, Mabel, and more so again I reached the third, Douglas. The book's other good point was that the plot strands worked together well; I didn't find any inconsistencies or parts that weren't feasible, a huge plus. To sum up - it was just okay for me, but I daresay readers who care more about a carefully constructed plot than character connection would enjoy it more.

So here it is:A young lady's indiscretion at the beginning of her woman hood launches her on a journey of self- discovery, self-doubt and a struggle with co-dependence as she rises like a star; hometown girl turned celebrity on the small screen.The man involved in this indiscretion had also done something to her to make her uncomfortable in certain ways around men for many years after, while also leaving her pregnant after the single encounter.The circumstances and resulting child were hidden immediately with the help of a mutual friend, in order to protect both her potential acting career and his political career and family.Forty years later those secrets are threatened to be spilled despite the carefully laid plans and also in spite of the biography that was written to keep Madge's life and character cast in a positive light, even after her death.The story is split between three POV's. Each POV character is well rounded and their personality shines through in their actions and reactions throughout the story. They are built through interaction with the world and people around them, and not through basic descriptions. The story is ultimately about Madge, but you tend to really care for some of the other characters even more as their life story is told. Their involvement in Madge's life is only a part of their story, and the other parts are just as interesting to read about.The author really shines in his portrayal of human inner thought and reflection. I could really feel how that particular character felt, and see the world through their eyes. His easy way of capturing dialogue kept the story flowing well, and the scenes interesting. The descriptive parts were in depth but kept to the point so as not to go overboard or bore the reader.This book is out of my "normal" type of read, but I really enjoyed it for all the reasons listed above. The only thing I am left wondering, is what really happened that night that caused Madge to become the person she was?All in all this is a very in-depth read that grabs your attention and doesn’t let go until you’ve read the last page.

What are the consequences of a seemingly meaningless sexual romp between a man in his late twenties and a girl in her teens when the encounter leads to the birth of an unacknowledged child? What is the fallout 40 years later, after the girl has become a well-known actress and the man has become a respected Member of Parliament?

Promising start By AM I bought this book because of The New Yorker's glowing profile of Ms. Zink and the first chapter of the book published as a short story in the same. It's good to have friends in high places! The first half of this book raced by and was witty and thoughtful - I laughed out loud during the commute to work. The last half, though, descended into slapstick and circled its way to a nice pat ending. A promising start with a disappointing finish but worth the read for the first half's vivid, funny prose.

I won this book through Goodreads First Reads.I really wanted to like this book but in the end I found myself not really caring what would happen. Peggy is really the most unlikable lead character I’ve come across in a while. The book starts off basically with Peggy declaring she’s a lesbian then starting college only to sleep with a male teacher and end up pregnant. Lee marries her to do the honorable thing which to me is the least honorable thing to do when he does nothing but cheat on her for the 10 years they do spend together.Peggy finally has enough and leaves the joke of a marriage behind but she also leaves behind her son and only takes her young daughter with her. Instead of getting a divorce and making something of herself she ends up getting false identities for herself and her daughter and hiding. Then of course the only logical step from there instead of doing something as obvious as getting a job or going back to school is to end up in business with a drug dealer.There are a few funny moments throughout the book but I spent too much time just shaking my head at the choices and actions of all the characters to rate this any higher than maybe a 2.5.

I found this novel eminently readable and enjoyable replete with witty writing and amusing observations - but the characters seemed a little forced to me as if they were invented like mannequins to serve the author's literary purposes rather than real life men, women and children.The main character, Meg, is a lesbian who gets herself into a marriage with a fairly unstable homosexual, Lee, who edits a poetry magazine at an obscure Virginia college. They manage to have two children together, a boy and a girl, before the marriage collapses in a welter of bitterness. Meg flees, taking the little girl but leaving the eight-year-old boy behind with his father.Meg reinvents her daughter as black (even though she is blond) and gets her a new identity. They live under the radar in great poverty, sustained only by Meg's activities as the sidekick of a local drug dealer. Meanwhile Lee continues to search for his missing daughter. We know that at some point a reunification will happen and when it does, the author engineers and fairly successful comic denouement.The book is often insightful and full of sly little observations. In fact, the chief pleasure of this book is the writing. Whether one is invested in these people and their lives is another matter.

By Hrostoski I consider myself an undercover healer, meaning it's not how I explicitly show up in the world. I really enjoyed reading Robin's journey as it strangely paralleled mine, even with the decade of partying and boozing. Although this book is written for the aspiring healer, it's a good read for any human being. We could all use a little more humility, a little more integrity, and a deeper connection with God. There were some parts in the book that really made me question how I'm showing up in the world, even after doing a ton of deep inner work and self study over the past several decades. There is so much yet to learn and unlearn and Robin's book is a great start.

I've been part of prayer groups where incredible healing has occurred. I know that we are not just flesh and bone, but also spirit. I love that this book isn't actually about the healer at all, but rather about God and the relationship that the healer has with Him. In Chapter 4, Robin says, "Above all else, the healer who makes a difference is a man or woman of God." To be honest, there are some concepts in here that I'm not sure about (which is why only 4 stars). However, there is one thing I know for sure... the world needs more healers. In particular, we need healers who are connected to God and making a difference.

Pope A few short years ago, I realized my soul’s calling had nothing to do with the way I was earning a living and serving in the world. I was being called to become a healer of hearts, primarily broken hearts. Boy, I wish I had this book at that time in my life. If you think part of your life’s work is to be a healer in some way, this book is a beautiful roadmap through the divine so that you can create a business that will align your passion with your gifts. Being a healer is important work and it helps to have guides like Thompson along the way.

Scene 1

Enter two Gentlemen.

FIRST GENTLEMAN

You do not meet a man but frowns. Our bloods

No more obey the heavens than our courtiers'

Still seem as does the King's.

SECOND GENTLEMAN But what's the matter?

FIRST GENTLEMAN

His daughter, and the heir of 's kingdom, whom

He purposed to his wife's sole son -- a widow

That late he married -- hath referred herself

Unto a poor but worthy gentleman. She's wedded,

Her husband banished, she imprisoned. All

Is outward sorrow, though I think the King

Be touched at very heart.

SECOND GENTLEMAN None but the King?

FIRST GENTLEMAN

He that hath lost her, too. So is the Queen,

That most desired the match. But not a courtier,

Although they wear their faces to the bent

Of the King's looks, hath a heart that is not

Glad at the thing they scowl at.

SECOND GENTLEMAN And why so?

FIRST GENTLEMAN

He that hath missed the Princess is a thing

Too bad for bad report, and he that hath her --

I mean, that married her, alack, good man!

And therefore banished -- is a creature such

As, to seek through the regions of the earth

For one his like, there would be something failing

In him that should compare. I do not think

So fair an outward and such stuff within

Endows a man but he.

SECOND GENTLEMAN You speak him far.

FIRST GENTLEMAN

I do extend him, sir, within himself,

Crush him together rather than unfold

His measure duly.

SECOND GENTLEMAN What's his name and birth?

FIRST GENTLEMAN

I cannot delve him to the root. His father

Was called Sicilius, who did join his honor

Against the Romans with Cassibelan,

But had his titles by Tenantius, whom

He served with glory and admired success,

So gained the sur-addition Leonatus;

And had, besides this gentleman in question,

Two other sons, who in the wars o' th' time

Died with their swords in hand. For which their father,

Then old and fond of issue, took such sorrow

That he quit being; and his gentle lady,

Big of this gentleman our theme, deceased

As he was born. The King he takes the babe

To his protection, calls him Posthumus Leonatus,

Breeds him and makes him of his bedchamber,

Puts to him all the learnings that his time

Could make him the receiver of, which he took

As we do air, fast as 'twas ministered,

And in 's spring became a harvest; lived in court --

Which rare it is to do -- most praised, most loved,

A sample to the youngest, to th' more mature

A glass that feated them, and to the graver

A child that guided dotards. To his mistress,

For whom he now is banished, her own price

Proclaims how she esteemed him; and his virtue

By her election may be truly read

What kind of man he is.

SECOND GENTLEMAN I honor him

Even out of your report. But pray you tell me,

Is she sole child to th' King?

FIRST GENTLEMAN His only child.

He had two sons -- if this be worth your hearing,

Mark it -- the eldest of them at three years old,

I' th' swathing clothes the other, from their nursery

Were stol'n, and to this hour no guess in knowledge

Which way they went.

SECOND GENTLEMAN  How long is this ago?

FIRST GENTLEMAN  Some twenty years.

SECOND GENTLEMAN

That a king's children should be so conveyed,

So slackly guarded, and the search so slow

That could not trace them!

FIRST GENTLEMAN Howsoe'er 'tis strange,

Or that the negligence may well be laughed at,

Yet is it true, sir.

SECOND GENTLEMAN  I do well believe you.

FIRST GENTLEMAN

We must forbear. Here comes the gentleman,

The Queen and Princess.

They exit.

Enter the Queen, Posthumus, and Imogen.

QUEEN

No, be assured you shall not find me, daughter,

After the slander of most stepmothers,

Evil-eyed unto you. You're my prisoner, but

Your jailer shall deliver you the keys

64 of 72 people found the following review helpful. A late, loony, self- parodying masterpiece By A Customer "Cymbeline" is my favourite Shakespeare play. It's also probably his loopiest. It has three plots, managing to drag in a banishment, a murder, a wicked queen, a moment of almost sheer pornography, a full-on battle between the Romans and the British, a spunky heroine, her jealous but not-really-all-that-bad husband, some fantastic poetry and Jupiter himself descending out of heaven on an eagle to tell the husband to pull his finger out and get looking for his wife. Finally, just when your head is spinning with all the cross-purposes and dangling resolutions, Shakespeare pulls it all together with shameless neatness and everybody lives happily ever after. Except for the wicked queen, and her son, who had his head cut off in Act 4."Cymbeline" is, then, completely nuts, but it manages also to be very moving. Quentin Tarantino once described his method as "placing genre characters in real-life situations" - Shakespeare pulls off the far more rewarding trick of placing realistic characters in genre situations. Kicking off with one of the most brazen bits of expository dialogue he ever created, not even bothering to give the two lords who have to explain the back story an ounce of personality, Shakespeare quickly recovers full control and races through his long, complex and deeply implausible narrative at a headlong pace. The play is outrageously theatrical, and yet intensely observed. Imogen's reaction on reading her husband's false accusation of her infidelity is a riveting mixture of hurt and anger; she goes through as much tragedy as a Juliet, yet is less inclined to buckle and snap under the pressure. When she wakes up next to a headless body that she believes to be her husband, her aria of grief is one of the finest WS ever wrote. No less impressive is her plucky determination to get on with her life, rather than follow her hubby into the grave.Posthumus, the hubby in question, is made of less attractive stuff, but when he comes to believe that Imogen is dead, as he ordered (this play is full of people getting things wrong and suffering for it), he rejects his earlier jealousy and starts to redeem himself a tad. There's a vicious misogyny near the heart of this play, as Shakespeare biographer Park Honan observed, kept in balance by a hatred of violence against women. The oafish prince Cloten, who lusts after Imogen, is a truly repellent piece of work, without even the intelligence of Iago or the horrified panic of Macbeth; his plan to kill Posthumus and rape Imogen before her husband's body is just about as squalid and vindictive as we expect of this louse, and when a long-lost son of the king (don't even _ask_) lops Cloten's head off, there are cheers all round.Shakespeare sends himself up all through "Cymbeline". I wonder if the almost ludicrously informative opening exposition scene isn't a bit of a gag on his part, but when a tired and angry Posthumus breaks into rhyming couplets, then catches himself and observes "You have put me into rhyme", we know that Shakespeare is having us on a little. Likewise, the final scene, when all is resolved, goes totally over the top in its piling-on "But-what-of-such-and-such?" and "My-Lord-I-forgot-to-mention" moments.Yet the moments of terror and pity are deep enough to make the jokiness feel truly earned. When Imogen is laid to rest and her adoptive brothers recite "Fear no more the heat o' the sun" over her body, it's as affecting as any moment in the canon. That she isn't actually dead, we don't find out until a few moments later, but it's still a great moment.Playful, confusing, enigmatic, funny and shot through with a frightening darkness, this is another top job by the Stratford boy. Well done.

22 of 26 people found the following review helpful. misleading and outdated By A Customer This is probably one of the most outdated and misleading of the Arden editions. Nosworthy really doesn't like the play and dismisses it as an experiment leading up to _The Tempest_. Even his editing of the text is affected by his reading of the play. Only scholars who know something about Shakespeare should venture here.

22 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Simply Magnificent By Sean Ares Hirsch A combination of "Romeo and Juliet," "Much Ado About Nothing," "As You Like It," and "King Lear?" Well somehow, Shakespeare made it work. Like "Romeo and Juliet" we have a protagonist (Imogen) who falls under her father's rages because she will not marry who he wants her to. Like "Much Ado About Nothing," we have a villain (Iachimo) who tries to convince a man (Posthumus) that the woman he loves is full of infidelity. Like "As You Like It," we have exiled people who praise life in the wilderness and a woman who disguises herself as a man to search for her family in the wilderness. Like "King Lear," we have a king who's rages and miscaculated judgement lead to disastorous consequences. What else is there? Only beautiful language, multiple plots, an evil queen who tries to undermind the king, an action filled war, suspense, a dream with visions of Pagan gods, and a beautiful scene of reconciliation at the end. While this is certainly one of Shakespeare's longer plays, it is well worth the time.

From the beginning it held my interest and this would have made a great standalone but the last 5 minutes wasnt realistic at all. I dont even know how to feel. I dont want to spoil this but really Christine? Devine? you could have just stalled a little more on here procedure to part 2 . Smh
