About the Author Amy Lively is a writer and speaker who provides tips, tools, and teaching about loving our neighbors without being weird, offensive, or pushy. Amy draws from her own experience knocking on her neighbors' doors and leading a women's neighborhood Bible study, which grew into an international ministry called The Neighborhood Cafe. She is passionate about helping people identify their unique ministry gifts and use them in their community. By Samantha Lively takes “love thy neighbor” in a literal sense in her book, How to Love Your Neighbor Without Being Weird. She provides practical and simple ways of how to reach those in our neighborhoods. This is not a lose interpretation of the word “neighbor” but those who actually live within our proximity. She shares her testimony of how she came to a saving knowledge of Christ, and how she realizes that Christ commanded every Christian to love their neighbors. Lively barely knew her neighbors even though she had lived in her neighborhood for several years, and the Lord convicted her in this area. She faced the fear of being viewed as weird, and admits that she would “rather go to Africa than across the street” for the Gospel (17).Fears eventually become excuses (98). I have a family to take care of, a job to do, and ministry obligations at church. All of these are great things. However, they have become excuses and reasons to not reach my neighbor and my community. I love how Lively calls out on our excuses and simply state that it’s all due to laziness (109). It is much easier to ignore our neighbors and become emotionally numb to their needs than intentionally reach out to them. So how do we reach our neighbors for Christ?One of the most effective ways to reach a neighborhood is through using our own homes. Lively states that it is easier and less intimidating to invite someone over to our house than to invite them to church. If you’re anything like me, than you’re probably thinking, “Great, I have to have a pristine home in order to reach my neighborhood”. But thankfully, we don’t need a Pinterest worthy home to reach our neighborhoods. There’s a difference between hospitality and entertaining. Entertaining requires finesse and style to impress people whereas hospitality “can happen in a messy house. It can happen over store-bought cookies with mismatched paper plates” (177). The emphasis is not on impressing others with our house, but to welcome others to our homes and our lives.It’s evident that Amy Lively has a passion for neighborhood ministries. She is the founder of The Neighborhood Cafe which provides further resources for Bible studies and neighborhood outreaches. If you think you missed your window of opportunity to meet your neighbors, than Lively’s book will provide great strategies and hope. After living in her neighborhood for several years, Lively was able to build relationships with her neighbors, start Bible studies in her home, and develop conversations with those who are not Christians. The book is applicable for those who have lived in their neighborhood for a few months or several years.If you’ve been in church and ministry for a while, than there isn’t anything new in Lively’s book. She covers topics such as spiritual gifts, conversation starters, and outreach ideas. She also includes three appendices full of resources and websites for further steps. Yet sometimes simplicity is the most effective tool. The strategies aren’t unique but the message is convicting. It’s one thing to become involved with church Bible studies and activities, but it’s an entirely different idea when it comes to loving our neighbors. If we’re willing to praise God on Sunday mornings, than we must be willing to take the Gospel to our neighbors.Though the focus is on loving our neighbors, the strategies are also applicable to reaching our theoretical neighbors as well. This is applicable to co-workers and friends who do not go to church, especially those who are intimidated or skeptical of church. For example, young moms are in need of God’s grace on a daily basis. How wonderful would it be to reach out to our “neighbors”, or other young moms, by inviting them to our homes, develop relationships, and encourage them through Christ?If you are looking for ways to reach your neighbors, than this book is perfect for both individual and group study. By Christine Abraham One of my favorite books to read the summer of 2015 is this book by Amy Lively, How to Love Your Neighbor Without Being Weird. Being the founder of a #BibleCafe I loved the book so much I added it to my Top 10 Favorite Books of 2015 and also pleaded with the author to join her book launch team on Facebook. This book speaks my language about ministering to women in small groups using the gift of hospitality in your communityWhat I like most about this book is the experience and willingness to share Bible study methods that worked and failed in a local community. Amy tackles the most common fears and excuses for leading local studies in your home. She tells the truth about what it required to invest in the lives of your neighbors and to move into your calling.If you want to discover how to obey the Lord's command to love your neighbor then get this book NOW! Amy has literally mapped out the steps you'll want for inviting neighbors, planning your groups and identifying your purpose.I'm in a local leadership group with twelve ministry leaders and I hope they will select this as one of the monthly books for discussion. It's really encouraging and once you finish reading the book you'll get off the sofa and meet those neighbors who walk by your home each day. By Jon Gibson I’m not really the target audience that Amy Lively had in mind when she wrote “How To Love Your Neighbor Without Being Weird.” This book was really written to and for women who are seeking to (or struggling with) reaching out to their neighbors. Just because I’m not the target audience doesn’t mean that I can’t learn anything from it, and learn I did from Amy’s insights, stories, and helpful tips.In “How To Love Your Neighbor Without Being Weird,” Amy Lively shares her own story, how her parents had become Christians before she was born and how she had grown up in the church. She shares about her journey away from the church, her rebellion from God, and her journey back again. She reveals a lot about herself, warts and all, in hopes that it would be an encouragement to her readers. Just like the observation of the leaders of the Sanhedrin in Acts 4 that Peter and John were “ordinary men,” I get the feeling that Amy Lively wants everyone to know that she’s ordinary…..and that’s not a bad thing.Lively shares about her motivation to reach out to her neighbors in an effort to get to know them better. She shares about how it’s too easy to go from our living room, to our cars in our attached garage, to our parking garage at work, to our cubicles, and then we come home. It’s possible to completely eliminate any interaction with our neighbors if we aren’t intentional about making that interaction happen. When those interactions don’t happen, we are much more likely to speculate and imagine what our neighbors are like, possibly imagining the worst rather than seeking out the best. She shared that one fifth of Americans admit they judge their neighbors on what they see, what their properties and houses look like. Lively shares about some of the thoughts that she had about her neighbors before she had met them face to face.Jesus’ command is to love the Lord with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength and to love our neighbors as ourselves. It’s not a recommendation, it’s a command. As lively says, “it’s pretty hard to love someone when you don’t even know their name.” We need to know their names, know what they like, know their needs, know their concerns, and as we begin to learn all of these things about our neighbors, we find ourselves caring more for them and loving them in the process.While the traditional approach towards introducing people to Jesus has become inviting them to church, Lively suggests that is the equivalent to inviting a vegetarian to a pork barbecue, it just doesn’t work well. Instead, we need to build relationships of trust and love. Inviting your neighbors to church is a good thing, but it’s not the first thing. The first thing is getting to know them. In fact, insisting that everyone you become friends with enter through the door of religion first is just weird.Throughout the book, Lively shares her own excuses, the excuses that she used to NOT reach out to her neighbors. She is honest about her fears, the ones that she has overcome as well as the ones that she is still overcoming. She shares about her tendency towards procrastination, for avoidance when things are hard, and she’s honest about the struggles. This kind of honesty is what makes this book such a draw, at least to me, and she shares that people don’t trust people who act perfect but instead relate to vulnerability, transparency, and honesty. People don’t want to hear stories about success that seems unachievable, they want to know that that success can be achieved even by ordinary and average people, and that’s what Lively does, she shares in such a way as to let the reader know that success is not a pipe dream, but it’s easier than they might have imagined.Amy Lively also has a chapter on spiritual gifts and unpacks the various spiritual gifts that are shared in the Bible. She gives a helpful description of all of them and even shares how other gifts can be used, gifts that might not have been mentioned in the Bible passages that she shared.Throughout the book, Lively has a set of questions at the end of each chapter to help to encourage the reader to think through these concepts and ideas. She has suggestions of non-weird ways to reach out and engage your neighbors. She offers encouragement, insight, wisdom, and even warning. The best part about this book is that when the reader is done, they’re really not left with any excuses as to why they can’t try at least one of the suggestions Lively has given.While Lively has written this book for women seeking to reach out and befriend their neighbors, there are insights in here that are helpful for anyone who has the same desire. It’s a worthwhile read whether you’re just starting out or need an extra boost and if you’re doing you best to love the people around you without being weird.(This review is based upon a copy of this book which was provided free of charge from Bethany House Publishers.
