Written in an elegantly easy style, this book captures a time when New York loved books, specialty bookstores abounded, and The Military Bookman was one of the best. Harris Colt left Wall Street to turn his skill, his experience, and his life-long passion for collecting things military into the reality of a shop that would be a resource for like-minded collectors and scholars. That Margaretta, though taken by surprise was instantly on board with the enterprise the moment Harris announced it, speaks brilliantly to a very special and lively affection that shines through every line of their story. And a Divine Providence must have been on board, too, because good luck seems also to have shone on the project at every turn - good luck and a remarkably extensive circle of friends, neighbors, and family who brought cheerful helping hands to build this Upper East Side treasure. Margaretta Colt has written much more than the memoir of a book store. She has written a wonderful love story.

This is the kind of book that creates its own world, and it's a world you want to retreat into and never leave. The enclosed space in the English basement floor of an 1890s brownstone is warm and hermetic. Colt evokes and describes the idiosyncratic customers and often equally idiosyncratic staff with tolerance and a real eye for the eccentric detail.When the Colts travel to England--and occasionally France and Germany--on buying trips once or twice a year, they seem to have a magnetic attraction for their own kind, so the booksellers lodged in old manor houses or half-timbered village shops are The Military Bookman Abroad.A not inconsiderable pleasure of this book is the expert and mouth watering detail Colt brings to describing the inventory--everything from traditional Japanese wood block prints, but with the subject being the ironclad ships of the 1905 Russo-Japanese War breathing fire and smoke, to a 50 foot long engraving of 1852 funeral of the Duke of Wellington. And of course, the books themselves! They made regular customers of the staffs of West Point and the Pentagon, as well as the neighborhood rich recluses and the occasional bag lady.Like Mrs. Gaskell's Cranford--or even childhood classics such as The Wind in the Willows, Martial Bliss is its own snow globe creation and you only wish you could have lived inside it.

It brings back memories of many mornings the day after receiving the little red catalog, frantically dialing and speed-redialing to the heart-wrenching sound of the busy signal as I stared at my circled choices, heart in my mouth that my selections would still be there. I usually got Harris on the phone, but sometimes Margaretta or Jason. If my top two or three choices were gone, Harris patiently strolled the stacks looking for alternate editions or similar titles. He never failed to come up with something, and they were often better than my original choices. He was a walking , talking annotated bibliography. He, Margaretta and Jason came to know my likes: those British staff histories prepared for Sandhurst classes or for the officer promotion exams and official histories of those little wars of Victorian and Edwardian days---Kipling's army.I am quoted in the book (upon receiving a faithful client gift and a catalog with staff photos) “You all look as friendly as you sound”. Indeed, friendly and caring (and patient) they were. I only regret that during my infrequent trips to Manhattan from DC I never got the chance to visit the store.Margaretta's love for the business she was pulled into pell-mell by Harris shines through as does her love and respect for her scholar/entrepeneur husband. The book world (what's left of it) will sorely miss him.This is an extremely lively book –not something one would expect in a book about a book business—with plenty of human interest stories about the trade and its “characters”. Thanks to the fine collection of military history books I snagged from MB, I became a military and naval historian, now finishing up the ms of my third book (on ancient Roman sea power). As I gaze around at my overflowing shelves and mounds of books about 90% from MB, , I am enjoying browsing through Margaretta's warm yet erudite memoir. I can still hear Harris's nasal twang on the phone as he suggested. “That one is sold, but I think you would love this...” And I inevitably did.Besides the sparkling prose and chatty insider's anecdotes about the world of both the main and the arcane booksellers of Manhattan a world now gone, this is an excellent primer on the military historian's profession. The demise of MB, as well as it's kindred shops, was a victory of electronic media over we poor Luddites who see books as objects to hold and cherish, and yes, to read, bookmark and even annotate in pencil.Margaretta Barton Colt provides as well, and most imporantly to this reader and collector, a grand tour of military history through its rare and long-gone printed volumes. She is quite a scholar in her own right, and yet wears her learning lightly.You need not be a military history afficionado to enjoy this book. The fact that it will appeal to that group as well as a general reading public is a bonus.

About the Author Halko Weiss, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and lecturer on mindfulness, couples therapy and body-centered psychotherapy for, among others, the Bavarian Licencing Board for Psychotherapists, ZIST Academy, University of Marburg, and the University Hospital in Tuebingen, Germany. Dr. Weiss initiated the largest multi-center scientific research project to date on body psychotherapy, authored 20 scientific publications and six books, and co-founded the Hakomi Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Leading hundreds of workshops and training courses throughout Germany, the US, Canada, and Australia, Dr. Weiss has been instrumental in developing the Hakomi Method and its curricula used worldwide. He also established a successful coaching training program in Germany and became the market leader there in Emotional Intelligence trainings for executives.Greg Johanson, MDiv, PhD, LPC, NCC, a founding trainer of the Hakomi Institute, has a background in therapy as well as theology. It is one of the original mindfulness-based psychotherapies and has flown under the radar for far too long. Hopefully this elegant and impressive book will change that. I can’t recommend this compassionate and effective modality strongly enough. If you are looking for an experiential method that creates real change in unconscious beliefs and behaviors in a collaborative and non-pathologizing way, Hakomi is that method. This book is also timely to what is going on now in the fields of neuroscience, trauma, attachment theory and emotional regulation. The multiple authors create a coherent and articulate volume that I hope becomes a doorway for many into this transformative practice.

By Phil Aud Hays set’s out his “twofold thesis that the OT teaches us how to read the Gospels and that–at the same time–the Gospels teach us how to read the OT.” He boils this down even further in saying that “Scripture is to be reinterpreted in light of the cross and resurrection.” If we under scripture as unveiling God’s story, this should seem obvious. And yet, how often is such reading discouraged. Goldingay, for example, acknowledges that “The biblical gospel is…a narrative about things God has done.” And yet in his method he does not “discus the way what is concealed in the Old is revealed in the New.” “Moses” he writes, “suggests that his teaching, and the Old Testament by extension, is not a repository of concealment but a repository of revelation. The New certainly assumes that there are things that are revealed in the New, but that is not a basis for reading them into the Old. They are new.” Hays disagrees. For example, in writing about Jesus’ claim to be the “bread of life” in reference to the the crowds question about manna, Hays writes that “According to John’s Gospel, that is the true meaning of what Moses wrote.” The Gospel writers are teaching us how to re-read scripture in light Jesus death and resurrection.Hays brilliantly lays out the diverse ways in which all of the Evangelists do this, and concludes with a final chapter on why such diversity is important, albeit complicated. One reason why such reading is crucial is that allows us to see (as intended, I believe) that all of the Gospel writers, and not just John, have a “high Christology” if we are reading correctly.I’ll end with this quote, which seems appropriate for the review, from Hays:“To read Scripture well, we must bid farewell to plodding literalism and rationalism in order to embrace a complex poetic sensibility. The Gospel writers are trying to teach us to become more interesting people–by teaching us to be more interesting readers.”Hays “Reading Backwards” helps us to become such people.[As an aside, I do hope this book comes down in price. It is very expensive for a 109 page book.]

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. I appreciate the intertextual reading of the Scriptures By Richard Carr Richard B. Hays’ new book is a short read but there is a lot to digest in its 109 pages. Each of the four Gospels is given a chapter. In this post I will limit my reflections to his chapter on the Gospel of Mark.By way of review about the book in general, in the preface Hays states clearly that the book is an "account of the narrative representation of the identity of Jesus in the canonical Gospels, with particular attention to the ways in which the four Evangelists reread Israel’s Scripture, as well as the ways in which Israel’s Scripture prefigures and illuminates the central character in the Gospel stories."For Hays, the concept of ‘mystery’ is essential for understanding how Mark crafts his narrative around the person of Jesus. He points out that Mark is generally more cryptic and allusive than Matthew (who much more often states explicitly “This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet , saying…”). Mark’s strategy of indirect reference and subtle allusions to the Old Testament cautions us against speaking too quickly about the mysterious identity of the Carpenter from Nazareth. In other words, there is something crudely wrong with stating so blatantly and matter-of-factly that “Jesus is the God of Israel.” Such a brash declaration fails to do justice to the transcendence and profoundness of the truth contained in the affirmation. And some might even say that kind of statement oversimplifies an incredibly complex identity; Hays quotes Rowan Williams, “There is a kind of truth which, when it is said, becomes untrue” (31). The point is that the identity of Jesus cannot be boiled down into such an unqualified two-dimensional statement. Instead, Mark chooses to drop dynamic hints about the identity of Jesus by way of careful selection of stories (and careful telling of those stories), hints that leave the reader to silently ponder who this Jesus was, drawing his categories from the Old Testament.Here is how Hays concludes his interpretation of Mark’s figural Christology (an interpretation which he notes is not far from the way Mark’s Gospel is read in the Orthodox tradition):"So, if we seek to read Scripture through Mark’s eyes, what will we find? We will find ourselves drawn into the contemplation of a paradoxical revelation that shatters our categories and exceeds our understanding. We will learn to stand before the mystery in silence, to acknowledge the limitation of our understanding, and to wonder. The ‘meaning’ if Mark’s portrayal of the identity of Jesus cannot be rightly stated in flat propositional language; instead, it can be disclosed only gradually in the form of narrative, through hints and allusions that project the story of Jesus onto the background of Israel’s story. As Mark superimposes the two stories on one another, remarkable new patterns emerge, patterns that lead us into a truth too overwhelming to be approached in any other way."I do have some questions about how Hays establishes an Old Testament allusion. As one example, at times Hays seems to rest his reading of the OT allusion on the repetition of a couple key phrases (and perhaps also thematic similarity?). I want to ask, is the repetition of phrases enough to establish an admittedly cryptic allusion? It would be nice if more evidence could be adduced to demonstrate the presence of an allusion.Notwithstanding my unanswered questions, I deeply appreciate this kind of reading of Mark’s gospel. As a footnote, I think it provides a convincing explanation of the shorter (in my opinion, genuine) ending of Mark. If the shorter ending is original, then Mark ends his gospel with this authorial comment: “Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid” (Mark 16:8). This mysterious concluding statement has generated a history of complex textual emendations and additions by scribes in the centuries to follow Mark’s writing. Why would Mark end his gospel in such an unexpected way? Well, if Hays’ reading is correct then it should not be so unexpected after all. Mark has been preparing his readers for this kind of reaction all along. As Hays puts it, "readers who listen carefully to the resonances of Israel’s Scripture in Mark’s Gospel and then see how the story drives toward the passion narrative may find themselves, like the women in Mark’s artful dramatic ending, reduced, at least for a time, to silence…The fear of the women is, of course, a response to the message of the resurrection of Jesus the Crucified One. I would suggest that a similar response of reticent fear and trembling is equally appropriate when we read the story of the crucifixion, if we have rightly followed Mark’s narrative clues about the identity of the one on the cross."To this I simply offer a hearty AMEN and AMEN!

A Needed book on understanding the Bible By Steven Gunderson I am so frustrated with the majority of sermons I hear using the Bible as a fix-it manual ("how to fix your finances', 'how to fix your marriage', etc.). What I love about writers like Hays is that he shows us that (surprise! surprise!) the Bible is really about God, who he is and his plans to deal with an alienated world. Whether one agrees or not, Hays shows Jesus to be truly divine (somehow the Hebrew God in human form), plus shows that the New Testament cannot be fully understood without understanding the OT. This is a wonderful contribution to BIBLICAL hermeneutics as well.

It is a blessing and timely read. Is it perfect? no, thank the good and ever loving God. It makes known the relevance of being human in process. That, to me is beauty. Enough with white washed tombs - this book is an honest read. Yeah. A snippet from page 32 reads: "Many of us are living in Egypt under cruel bondage, banished from Eden with no sense of purpose and confused about the very reason for our existence. But God is calling our name, asking for our shoes.....". Just one of many beautiful passages calling out to confused generations. As a creative business coach & business owner, this is going on the recommended reading list. Mark's candor about his past and the GRACE that covers, makes REAL faith practical. A few years ago, I sought the Lord and asked: "where are you moving". I felt directed to a few ministries, one of which was Mark Casto's in Tennessee. I had never heard of him but we watched and prayed on line via an old ustream channel in an old building. That old building turned into a blessed ministry with Perry Stone (Omega Center International). It is an honor to recommend the book, the man, the family, the ministry and those who led him. Give honor to whom honor is due. I can hardly wait for the study guide (hint hint!).

The added info on King David is astoundingly fascinating...and the parallel of those of us who aren't as efficient at everything, but must forge ahead, anyhow, this was so hopeful that everyone does, indeed, have a place in the Puzzle of Life that God has chosen for each individual. The young pastor/writer is so honest one could experience his intense pushing against the Lord as he waited for directives continually! A great testimony to how God guide, for sure! Thank you!

By Jennifer Matthews I have been blessed to hear Mark Casto preach at Perry Stone conferences in Cleveland, Tennessee. It didn't take long to see that this young man of God was truly anointed. His messages were powerful and always touched my heart. The youth that go to the "Extreme" and other conferences where Mark speaks are truly blessed because Mark is someone who truly cares and has a heart for them. So when I heard Mark wrote this book, I wanted to read it, especially since I've been a misfit most of my life and needed encouragement. Mark did an excellent job sharing what it means to walk with God and have an intimate relationship with Him. Seeking first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness is indeed the only way to live a fulfilled life and a life anointed with God's power and direction. Mark shares how we need to be surrendered, not only to God, of course, but to those in authority over us; how to persevere in trials; and how to be obedient even in the small, seemingly insignificant tasks. I love the stories he shares about how God brought T.L. Lowery and Perry Stone into his life to help Mark "in the process" of reaching the destiny God intended for him. It's a process and not always easy, but as we humble ourselves and seek His face, God will be our Strength and provide for us. It is an exciting and heartwarming adventure. Best of all, it inspires us to draw closer to God than ever and be about His business at such a time as this.
