1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Could have been so much better! By Jody This book was pretty good. I like this series so far. Kori, Kendyl, Drew and Baliegh seem to attract drama at every turn. Most of the drama is brought on by them. Well, at least Kori is trying to do the right thing and grow up. The rest are just stupid and immature. I don't understand anything about Baliegh and Hampton's marriage. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON??!! Every time Baliegh's chapter came up, I wanted so badly to just skip over her B.S. The things she was allowing to go on in her marriage and the things she herself were doing was just unbelievable. How do you do those things to each other but yet you say you love and want to spend the rest of your life with that person. These two people are just pathetic. It was hard for me to even read anything about them. They actually annoyed the hell out of me.Then there's Drew. She was just plain dumb. All of her problems were self inflicted. This dumb chick just doesn't get it. On one hand, she is screaming about how much she wants her family and would love for her and Hunt to be together. Then in the very next paragraph, she's meeting someone new and getting their number for "just in case" things don't work out. Bitch, they aren't working out because you can't stop being stupid and doing stupid s***! Everything she does always comes back to bite her in the ass and now she might not get another chance to make this right with Hunt. I really hope the baby is Slim's. Hunt needs to just move on and co-parent with her. He seems to have Kaleb with him most of the time anyway. In my opinion, he's been way more patient with Drew than he really should be. Even in the end, she is about to do more stupid s***..Kendyl is something else. I know that I was probably in the minority, but in the first book, I kind of liked Kendyl. After reading about her trifling ass in this book, I hope karma take a BIG chunk out of her ass. She is pure evil. She has no morals at all and she regrets nothing that she does to cause pain in other people's lives. It would be great if she got knocked down a couple of notches. But from the way things are going for her, she will continue to be the evil person that she is and have no consequences.I love me some Kori. She was starting to piss me off for a minute but she finally came to her senses. I wonder though, if Jackson had not have seen her at lunch with Trey, would she still be holding a grudge over stupid crap? She knew what she wanted and that was Jackson, but she wanted to be mad over something so stupid. Even his family and her friends told her that it was nothing and yet she wanted to make it bigger than what it really was. I hope that Kori and Jackson's relationship continues to blossom. They are good together and once Kori let her wall down, she realizes what she has in Jackson and that's someone who will love her no matter what. Hopefully, they will be smart and steer clear of everyone else's drama and live like grown people should live.I gave this book 3 ***s because there were sooooo many mistakes it wasn't even funny. It got very annoying after a while. I mean, the word "patients" was used instead of "patience". I really hope you didn't pay your editor because they did a horrible job. You have a chance to have a great series here and I would hate for it to be ruined because someone isn't doing their job. There were just way too many mistakes. My other issue is why were the events in this story told over and over again? I get the characters having their own point of view on how things happened, but damn!!! I mean, the last four chapters were told four different times. The last part of the book was kind of painful to read through. After the party, there really wasn't much to read about. I hope the next book is better. Definitely looking forward to reading it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I like this story! By MszJXOXO I liked this book it hate the fact that I have to read the same thing over and over again from everybody's point of view. Overall good storyline but geesh it's really only half a book because the author is just telling the same things from a different perspective!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Secret Lovers 2 By tani8604 I swear these secret lovers were still doing the most. Drew was something else. She put herself in a messed up position but she should've just came clean to Hunt about her little secret. She may have been frustrated but there were other options. I understood why Hunt questioned her after their incident. Poor Baleigh! Yeah I felt for Hampton because he was hurt but the more I read, the more I felt he could've handled things better. He was doing way more than he should and I couldn't understand why he felt any good would come from sticking around Ken. His six year secret was priceless and I was waiting for Baleigh to get his ass back. It's clear he doesn't like when the roles are reversed. Kori seemed to be the only one that actually didn't have much problems. Jackson was just what Kori needed and I was glad when she finally let her guard down. She was being stubborn and it was beyond time for her to allow herself to enjoy the happiness she deserved. I had to give Jackson a thumbs up with how he handled the Rae situation and how he knew she was lying. I'm still shaking my head at Kendyl. You can't knock anyone's hustle but she's doing a lot and I wonder how it'll feel once everything catches up to her. I'm ready for part 3 to see what other craziness they will have going on. Will all of Kendyl's wrong doing come back at her full force and things go downhill, will Drew get herself together and fight for her family knowing she was wrong or charge it to the game, will Baleigh continue to show Hampton how everything he's put her through felt, will Kori's relationship continue to blossom without anymore issues, and will those who have secret lovers realize it's not worth losing their relationship over?!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Empowering story By Sarah Rush This story was beautifully written. It is a short novel, so the story line progresses quickly. The characters are witty and someone you can relate to. I was able to feel all the emotions of the main character as she went through the story dealing with her baggage from domestic violence. I think this is a great novel to help share there is life after awful moments in our lives. We all have the power inside us to pull up from the ashes and overcome! I will be reading more from this author!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A good debut book By Terrin Nickels A good debut book. A solid start for a new author. I enjoyed the book. Has some difficult material in it. I can't wait to see where the next book in the series goes. I was gifted this book for an honest opinion. I would recommend.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Amazing author!!! By Ivette Pacheco I was gifted this book at a party and my TBR its a little bit long, but something about the blurb got me hooked and said ok lets start this book first...It's a little hard to read something related to abuse, its not that the storyline scares me, its just that sometimes there's something not right or simply not well written; but when I started to read Fearing Love I knew that this book was not the case. The story of Jessica sometimes is so real that you cry, doubt and scare like her, its so good and captivating from the start, there are times that the story reflex some real issues that women go through life like self esteem, trust, insecurity, out of control, self worth, fear at something or someone that there is empathy with the character.I ugly cried while reading it but so worth it, because at the end you are left with an amazing story well written and emotions all over the place.

About the Author ABOUT THE AUTHOR I've had stories running through my head all my life. I tried writing a book when I was younger, but after a very nasty rejection I stopped. At the time I needed to support my family. I'm the father of eight children and rejections wouldn’t feed them. Now that I'm semi-retired I have the time without the worry. I live on seventeen acres in south eastern Arizona with my wife of over fifty years. If I never sell one book I have no regrets I'm enjoying writing them. I’d love to hear from readers. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Pleasant Feel Good Read By JCGriffin I read Mr. Mortensens work at the suggestion of a friend at work. I went at it with rather low expectations, I've been asked to read a lot of inspirational fiction books and usually find them hum-drum; a lot of false dilemmas. While the pacing started slow the characters are likable enough and the lead persistent enough to catch you and keep you involved. Moreover, I'd liken it characteristically to being the fly on the wall of your own family's interactions. So there is a really pleasant home factor to it. It kept me reading. Also, there is a world of tragedy and sorrow, sometimes its nice to see it receive some resolution, sometimes that makes a great story too.

George Needless to say, I was just giddy when asked to review this book being a great fan of both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings as well as other books by JRR Tolkien. It comes as no surprise that there are beautiful Catholic themes woven throughout The Hobbit since JRR Tolkien was a lifelong Catholic. The themes are not quite as obvious in The Hobbit as in the The Lord of the Rings which makes this book quite an interesting treasure to read. Although some points from The Lord of the Rings are also included which I much appreciated and enjoyed.Professor Pearce takes us on a journey~Bilbo's journey~which is also the journey of a soul. This is the journey of a soul that dies to self in order to be reborn again in Christ. One that leaves the comforts and pleasures of a self-centered life to embark on a pilgrimage filled with trials, dangers, and temptations. As in the spiritual life, this is how the soul is purified and tested.Bilbo's journey is an adventure in which the virtues of loyalty, patience, self-sacrifice, prudence, peacemaking, forgiveness, courage, and faithfulness are acquired. When Bilbo finally returns to his home from his journey, he is truly *a new man*.It's timely release is a perfect companion to those picking up The Hobbit for the first time, those looking forward to the movie's release this December, and those seasoned readers who have a dog-eared copy. I would also recommend this to late middle school and high school students who are encountering Tolkien's literature in school or at home.Professor Pearce has really opened my eyes to the implications of many of the characters and situations in The Hobbit that has allowed me to see it in a new light...a spiritual light. I will never read it the same way again.

He's profiled many literary icons like Shakespeare, G.K. Chesterton, and C.S. Lewis. His book on J.R.R. Tolkien remains my favorite Tolkien biography. Thus I was excited to hear about Pearce's new book on The Hobbit, published alongside its December film adaptation.Bilbo's Journey: Discovering the Hidden Meaning in The Hobbit (Saint Benedict Press, 144 pages, paperback) goes beyond the fantasy to unearth the profound Christian truths hidden within Tolkien's classic work.Tolkien himself described the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which The Hobbit precedes, as a "fundamentally religious and Catholic work." This underlying dimension is often noble, as in the virtue and self-sacrifice we spot in Bilbo, the dwarves, and the elves. These characters, Pearce notes, embody Jesus' beatific teachings. But there are also darker dimensions like the pride, lust, and greed we see in figures like Smaug, which affirm Jesus' warning that "where your treasure is, there will your heart be also" (Matthew 6:21).When examined through this Catholic lens, The Hobbit becomes a multi-layered spiritual journey:"[The Hobbit] is a rite of passage from ignorance to wisdom and from bourgeois vice to heroic virtue. Its main character, Bilbo, represents each of us journeying toward God and moral perfection."Pearce also shows how this journey is aided by religious forces like providence.Though Tolkien never mentions God throughout his fiction, his characters consistently face dire odds but emerge through the help of so-called "luck." Yet this is no mere chance, Pearce explains. Tolkien's aim was to show how God is constantly operating in the world, and even today guides history with intention and love.Bilbo's Journey closes with two interesting appendices. The first offers a short summary of Tolkien's important essay, "On Fairy Stories," and the second presents Pearce's own thoughts on the importance of wonder. Readers may actually be helped by reading these appendices first, before the rest of the book.In all, Bilbo's Journey is a timely, invigorating read by a foremost Tolkien scholar. Pearce's own background in Catholicism and English literature enable him to uniquely probe the hidden meaning of Tolkien's classic work. Whether you read this book alongside the film or the original book, it will shine new light on an old story.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Excellent insights into how The Hobbit reveals Divine Providence By Terryn I thought this book was excellent. Pearce goes through the story and unlocks the hidden meanings that Tolkien put into the book. I especially liked how Pearce showed the parallels between Bilbo's comforts at home in the beginning vs. the Dragon's comfort with the gold, and his description of "dragon sickness". I also liked how Pearce unlocked this not only as a "coming of age" story for Bilbo, but of how Divine Providence works through our lives as we partake of our own journeys, and how Providence is really at work when we think of it as luck. I gained some good insights into how Providence and free will work together through this book. Plus, it was fun to go through The Hobbit story again through a different lens.Be aware that Pearce expects that you have read both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings before you read this book.

When the Game Is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box, by John Ortberg

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Pastor and bestselling author Ortberg (God Is Closer Than You Think; Everybody's Normal Till You Get to Know Them) offers a thoughtfully written instruction manual for Christian game players of all ages. Using games as a metaphor, Ortberg presents carefully considered tactics for succeeding in life from God's vantage point. Each chapter weaves the rules of gaming with the Christian journey: understanding the object of the game (being spiritually rich toward God); the setup (keeping score, taking turns, preventing regret); how to play (with rules, gratitude and a mission); hazards (competition, greed, losing); and winning (choosing the right trophies). Christians will especially appreciate Ortberg's wise counsel on being the kind of player other people want to sit next to, as he exhorts readers to learn to lose with grace, win with grace and forgive with grace. Perspective is key; after all, when the game is over, it all goes back in the box. Ortberg demonstrates some finesse in bringing together the extended game imagery with various real-life stories that are by turns comical and poignant. With excellent tools for personal and group study alike, this book's strategy offers a win-win solution. (Sept.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Christians will especially appreciate Ortberg’s wise counsel on being the kind of player other people want to sit next to, as he exhorts readers to learn to lose with grace, win with grace and forgive with grace. WHEN THE GAME IS OVER IT ALL GOES BACK IN THE BOX by John Ortberg By MOTU Review When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box is a book on life by John Ortberg, a Presbyterian pastor. His argument is thus: you will die, and when you do, you will lose all the stuff you have. Therefore, instead of focusing on things you cannot keep, focus on things you can.Ortberg says that the object of life is, as Jesus said, to be rich toward God. Pleasing God is part of this; part of it is putting a greater priority on personal relationships. This also turns out to be the place where we find true fulfillment. Ortberg's main target is those who say they will work less and spend more time with their families "when things settle down." His message is this: things never settle down until it's too late. The book is written with an amusing game theme. Ortberg borrows a lot of anecdotes from a lot of different authors, which is fine. He gives credit where credit is due. Ortberg has a surprisingly good sense of humor. Sometimes his jokes are pretty corny, but on the whole he seems like a funny guy. My only criticism of his writing is a small one: several chapters tend to run a little long (the reader has gotten the point and is ready to move on). There is criticism due the publisher: on nearly every other page, there are excerpts from the text blown up in boxes on the same page. Perhaps this is done for those flipping through the book in a shop, or for those who skim, but for the actual reader, it is incredibly annoying and distracting. On the whole, When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box is an accessible, engaging, humorous book on Christian living and eternity. This is obviously a Christian book, but the theologizing does not get heavy-handed, and Ortberg does not beat the reader over the head with the Bible. It can benefit any Christian as well as nonchristians who are feeling unfulfilled.RECOMMENDED

I've actually bought 3 additional copies & given them to friends of mine!John's style in this book is engaging, but also pushed me to think deeply about how I'm living. The stories he tells pull you in... and then cause you to reflect on how the topic might be playing out in your own life.I also appreciate how it's more than "John's best thoughts on living" -- but it points back to Scripture time & again. And in doing so, often unveils a dimension of the Bible in a way I'd not considered before. There were quite a few times I'd interrupt my wife while I was reading it, and say "you've gotta hear this section". Prompted some great discussion. Basically... I loved it.

By Stacey When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back In The Box by John Ortberg is an inspiring, enlightening, life-changing book. Since I am an avid gamer, the cover art drew me in immediately. But it was the author's wit and practical advice that captured my attention and kept me reading. It begins with the greatest opening line since The Purpose Driven Life, and guides you through a series of strategies designed to teach the reader how to "play the game" of life.Filled with wit and humor and moving stories, I laughed out loud one minute and found myself tearing up the next as a poignant illustration was presented to show how so many of us miss the important stuff by concentrating so intensely on temporary rewards. The author then offers practical tactics for modifying our "To Do" lists so we can reconnect with what's really important in life. Not only did I take from this book several ideas for improving my life and relationship with God, but also the desire to make a difference in the lives of those around me as John Ortberg and his Grandmother obviously have.
