I sat down planning to read one chapter and ended up reading the entire book in one weekend. Whitehurst clearly breaks down the process of manifestation so you can identify where you might be blocking success in your life and what to do about it. She also provides you with plenty of energy exercises to keep your energy running smoothly, with tips on things that you can do daily and weekly, almost like an energy fitness program--I love it!What I enjoyed most about this book is that it focuses entirely on magic that's available to you every moment of every day with no special tools required. Formal ritual with all the bells and whistles can be fantastic, too, but Whitehurst's Holistic Energy Magic is the stuff you can do while you're standing in line at the grocery store or out hiking in the woods. Easily accessible yet quite powerful tools for making every moment more magical.

Holistic Energy Magic teaches you basics and how to remain in touch and aligned with the elements. Even if you are inside there are ways to connect with the elements. There are techniques for cleansing, healing, wealth, protection and more and it teaches you these techniques without the use of tools which I think further helps on a personal level with using visualization (sight) combined with sounds (hearing), and sense (feel) to better help you manifest your desires in the real world. They are easy to follow techniques that you can do anywhere. You see, you can have tools and robes and hats to help you look the part, but all style and no substance will not serve you well in your spiritual or magickal endeavors. You can have a bright red sports car with a black pen stripe from front to back, but if the car is missing the engine what good is having that car. With this book all you need is you. It is a reminder that magick is all around you in the (Water) you drink, the food (Earth) you eat, in the (Air) you breath, and in your will and passion (Fire) that drives you to make it all happen. It reminds you that you have always had the power of magick within you. You are magick. All that is needed is Patience and Persistence with Proper Training to help you harness that power and guide it to what ever dreams you may desire. This is definitely a book I will refer back to constantly and keep in my collection. I have had other books that focus on inner energy but also outer energy using tools. This book is all about you and strengthening your connection with the elements and your magick within. This book was a missing piece to my puzzle and I am thankful I finally found it. Thank You for a book I've been waiting for.

Message is clear: be creative and explore world of "occult" energies. This will boost creativity in one's life in day to day situations. Book is page turner! But, I must give one star minus because some themes are not explored. Maybe they are (cleverly) avoided by the author. For ex. what about timing in work, Moon's wanning and waxing phases, Sun phases, seasons, planets...and how to tune those informations with ideas from the book? I'ts not easy theme! In this moment author's views are unclear about that. Also in one place I noticed one quite materialistic advice about physical body though maybe it's not real author's intention. In short: four starsThanks Tess for this fine work!

Yukio Mishima was the most internationally acclaimed Japanese author of the twentieth century: prodigiously talented, dazzlingly prolific and a prime candidate for the Nobel Prize. Yet in 1970 Mishima shocked the world with a bizarre attempt at a coup d’état, which ended in his suicide by ritual disembowelment. In his radically new analysis of an extraordinary life, Damian Flanagan moves away from the stereotypical depiction of Mishima as a right-wing nationalist and aesthete and presents him as a man utterly obsessed with time – time-keeping devices and symbols – arguing that this compulsion was at the heart of the author’s literature and life. This book untangles the frequent distortions in the writer’s memoirs, which have often been taken at face value, and traces the evolution of Mishima’s attempts to master and transform both his sexuality and artistic persona. Though often perceived as a solitary protest figure, this book shows how Mishima was very much in tune with post-war culture: taking up bodybuilding and becoming a model and actor in the 1950s; adopting the themes of contemporary political scandals in his work; courting English translators and even becoming influenced by the student protests and hippy subculture of the late 1960s. Yet while being in thrall to the modern world, the flip side of Mishima’s personality – his hidden neuroses and the traumas of his youth – continually pushed him towards a firm rejection of modern Japan and his explosive final act of self-annihilation.

Yukio Mishima (Critical Lives), by Damian Flanagan

Review “Part of the originality of Flanagan’s latest work rests in its approach to time, the author contending that a unique approach to the temporal was a key factor in Mishima’s life and death. . . . Flanagan’s stylishly written literary biography comes closer than most to understanding the enigma of Yukio Mishima.”  (Japan Times)“An excellent introduction to Mishima’s life and work . . . Flanagan provides deft plot summaries and sensitive readings of Mishima’s fiction and deploys a wide array of Japanese sources currently unavailable in English, producing a rich portrait of this very strange and complicated man.”  (Gay and Lesbian Review)“A fine introduction to the life and times of Yukio Mishima, the most internationally acclaimed Japanese author and playwright of the twentieth century. . . . Flanagan is willing to tread where others have been more guarded and pulls few punches while analysing Mishima’s character. . . a thoughtful and engaging re-evaluation. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Mishima, Japanese literature, modern history, psychology, and queer studies.”   (Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies)“For the Japanese, Mishima and his beliefs were  ‘grotesque anachronism.’ . . . This biography demonstrates, however, that aspects of Mishima’s life deserve celebration: his command of the language, his development of a Japanese drama, short story, and the confessional genre, . . . and his dovtion to and attempt to capture beauty—both in person and in writing.” (Times Literary Supplement)

About the Author Damian Flanagan is an award-winning author and translator who has written widely on Japanese politics, arts, and society. He is the author of several books, including The Tower of London: Tales of Victorian London.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A must-read for anyone interested in Mishima By Sapuche I’ve read a dozen Mishima novels, story collections, and plays, as well as John Nathan’s biography of this monumental writer, and Flanagan’s work immediately brought back so much of the enthusiasm I’ve always felt reading Mishima. This biography is a must-read, as far as I’m concerned, for anyone interested in Mishima in his evolution as both a literary figure and a human being. It’s hard to think of Mishima at the end of his life as anything other than crazy, but Flanagan’s detailed portrait of him helps to explain the reasons for this in addition to depicting the fascinating manifestations of Mishima’s mindset late in his life.Early on Flanagan writes: “What makes Mishima such a fascinating subject is that he represented in his own person the intense psychological traumas of the whole sweep of modern Japanese history, its precipitate caesuras and volte-faces under intense external pressures that produced a deep sense of cultural schizophrenia.” That’s quite a lot for one person to represent, yet Flanagan gives highly readable examples throughout this biography to show the truth of the statement. The parts of Mishima’s life and work that are shared and expounded on are well worth the reader’s time, as is the act of re-reading so many of them. Flanagan is an excellent writer who knows how to deliver on a stunningly led life – the life of one of last century’s most talented authors, and a modern-day super-man on the scale of D’Annunzio, Hemingway, and perhaps a handful of others.I highly recommend Flanagan’s Mishima.

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Very lightweight intro to Mishima By Bruce T. “Radically new analysis”?? No, this book is like a very short summary of John Nathan’s classic bio of Mishima from the 80s. The only radically new feature is that this one is written in quaint British English. If you already know the basics about Mishima, you won’t find anything new here. And although the author keeps telling us how “acclaimed” Mishima’s novels were, he has nothing interesting to say about them. He is too concerned with trivia: Mishima’s high school watch, his bossy nana, how come he didn’t win the Nobel prize, etc. The author’s writing style is too sensationalist ("International literary superstar!" “The Day of Death!” “The Orgy of Blood!”) and his analysis is just shallow. But it turns out, that's not surprising. In a note at the end of the book, the author suddenly confesses: “Most of the research for this book was conducted in a coffee shop in Manchester.” Oh come on.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a new look on Mishima By Amazon Customer I read this book in one sitting, sped on by the author’s enthusiasm, and the story’s intrigue and suspense. While this book is a literary critique based on solid and extensive research, it’s almost as riveting as a psychological suspense. It approaches the ‘Mishima incident’ from both a socio-psychological background and from a close examination of Mishima's personal life. The author demystifies Mishima by tearing off Mishima’s self-constructed façades of lies to investigate the significance of him as a real person. The author portrays the socio-psychological aspects of Japanese post-war society - which still echo in Japan today - very convincingly. As a Japanese person, the book reminded me vividly of the suppressed anger, denial, disguised identity and deep sense of failure borne by my late father, a member of Mishima’s generation. The 'Mishima incident’ always seemed to me to be Mishima pointing his finger at a phantom, the hidden scars of Japan's wartime generation. Thanks to this book, I am now one step closer to understanding the legacy of my father’s generation in contemporary Japan.

Even if the Winds Still Blow By Amazon Customer I love this story; I just wish it would have been longer, because some parts of this story felt rushed therefore it caused the story to suffer a little bit. Some of it was predictable, but it was still a good story. It is a joy to read about the Heaton family and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A family riven by the Iranian Revolution By N. B. Kennedy Rahimeh Andalibian tells the dramatic story of the implosion of her once secure and happy Iranian family following the 1979 Islamic revolution. The owner of a hotel in the city of Mashhad that caters to Muslim pilgrims, Rahimeh's father, her beloved Baba, becomes involved in an event that ultimately traps the family in the brutal regime of the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and exacts an unimaginable price.Rahimeh is just 5-years-old when the story begins, one of five children of Baba and Maman. She lives an idyllic life, pampered and protected by her loving parents. "The borders of my life were defined by two buildings -- home and hotel - edged by trim topiary hedges," she writes. "How often I skipped for joy along that driveway from one pleasure dome to another."As the narrator, Ms. Andalibian doesn't let the reader know more than she knows at any given age. Growing older, she lets us in on more of her story and her understanding of it. In the aftermath of the revolution, the family escapes first to London and then to Los Angeles, where they must begin again in poverty. The family is resilient and finds its place in the Iranian community, her father starting a business that leads pilgrimages to Mecca. But the events of their last days in Iran -- and the secrets left buried -- affect each family member in different and destructive ways -- depression, resentment, drug abuse and alcoholism, broken marriages, failed businesses and bankruptcies, outbursts of rage and violence. "Because we did not mourn our losses or talk openly about what had happened, the festering wound -- the secret -- got buried deep within our family, like a land mine," she writes. "It was only a matter of time before it would explode."It was particularly interesting to me to read of the Iranian Revolution from the point of view of an observant Muslim family who were just as horrified as the global community by the corrupt new government that abused its power in the name of religion. Here in America, the news was all about the fifty-two U.S. embassy workers held hostage in Tehran for 444 days. We didn't hear much of the suffering of the Iranian people themselves. My lasting memory of the time is the day we went into New York for the ticker tape parade honoring the returning hostages.Ms. Andalibian's tale is a riveting one, marred for me only by the relentless foreshadowing with which she ends almost every chapter in the book. ("Just when we believed life could not get any worse, it did"; "Maman's predictions were to be proven terribly correct"; "The next crisis took an unexpected form, shapely and blonde.") And some events she retells seem incongruous; for example, she writes of her father having to employ torturers to extract stolen family money from an extortionist, yet her mother apparently collects a debt owed the family simply by asking. But these are small points, and nothing that detracts from the power of Ms. Andalibian's story.

A deeply-touching tale and a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit By Osa Once in a while you come across a story that permeates your being as with every emotion and every word exchanged you go on a personal journey with the characters and find yourself transported thousands of miles. This is one of these books from the moment you read the first page till you get to the final paragraph, eyes gritty from the lack of sleep, voice raspy from not having talked for so long. Though this may at first glance seem like another tale of an immigrant family's struggle, it stands out as the author's indepth perception of human nature and the interplay of family drama is one that most of us can relate to. This is a book that made me laugh and made me cry, but at the end it also made me take a closer look at my own family dynamics and ask myself how can I be a better sister/daughter/aunt? If you are trying to decide what book is next on your reading list, look no further, this is it.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A must read By Nazy R Fahimi Ms. Andalibian captures the essence of family in this amazing historical story. She takes the reader on an emotional page turning journey candidly sharing an unthinkable family tragedy, and, the impact of such tragedy on her entire family. This is a story of true courage and hope in the midst of upheaval. Ms. Andalibian gives the reader such deep insight into the human condition that every reader will walk away with a greater understanding of their own family dynamics and the hope and strength we all possess.

Astronaut Sarai Mathews knows the end is near when a giant wave rolls in and pulls her from the beach. But something strange happens: she doesn't die. Instead, she lives and breathes...underwater. While in the depths, she meets a handsome man named Jon Luc. According to him, they’re both Gaiians, a race of beings who are equal parts human and earth spirit. Could any of this be true? Is he real and not just someone she dreamt up during the chaotic moments in the water? For years, Jon Luc has searched for Sarai’s family. They are from a portion of the Gaiians who were lost to slavery and scattered across the Americas. These lost tribe members are called “The Missing”. Now he must keep her enemies at bay because someone else has found Sarai too, and they want to steal her birthright, the phoenix, a mythical creature that only she can capture and control. Jon Luc will protect Sarai at all costs, but first he has to convince her of her heritage. With enemies on their trail, the pair must work together to harness Sarai’s newfound abilities. As a daughter of the Missing, Sarai will attract the phoenix during her next space mission—and if she can’t get control, it might destroy them all.

By JazzyL An intriguing tale in the African American science-ficton genre, complete with history, love, deceit and danger. The story revolves around Sarai and her link-mate Jon-Luc. Sarai Matthews is a 45-year old African American female scientist who is about to fulfill her life's dream and become an astronaut as part of the last crew to ride the space shuttle to the International Space Station. At a pre-launch retreat she is drawn into the ocean and into a world that is beyond her rationale thought. Instead of drowning, she breathes underwater and meets her link-mate, Jon Luc. Jon Luc is Gaiian and it turns out so is she. Gaiian people are a race of ancient super humans that live partly underwater and are the true genisis of the "merpeople" myth. Throughout the tale, Sarai discovers her true identity and that of her mother, Terri Mathews. With Jon Luc and his team at the helm, the group eludes and fights against those that seek to destroy their way of life.

It is an intriguing story of an alien people of African descent who possess an unusual mix of powers to control elements of the earth. It was fantastical in so many of its elements but made believable--how about a powerful creature that lives around one's waist!? I don't want to give the story away, but it weaves ancient Africa, slavery and the super powers of Gaiians together in masterful method. Fortunately there is a sequel and hopefully there will be many more. This is something that I think many African Americans, as well as others, will love.
