When the Game Is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box, by John Ortberg

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Pastor and bestselling author Ortberg (God Is Closer Than You Think; Everybody's Normal Till You Get to Know Them) offers a thoughtfully written instruction manual for Christian game players of all ages. Using games as a metaphor, Ortberg presents carefully considered tactics for succeeding in life from God's vantage point. Each chapter weaves the rules of gaming with the Christian journey: understanding the object of the game (being spiritually rich toward God); the setup (keeping score, taking turns, preventing regret); how to play (with rules, gratitude and a mission); hazards (competition, greed, losing); and winning (choosing the right trophies). Christians will especially appreciate Ortberg's wise counsel on being the kind of player other people want to sit next to, as he exhorts readers to learn to lose with grace, win with grace and forgive with grace. Perspective is key; after all, when the game is over, it all goes back in the box. Ortberg demonstrates some finesse in bringing together the extended game imagery with various real-life stories that are by turns comical and poignant. With excellent tools for personal and group study alike, this book's strategy offers a win-win solution. (Sept.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. WHEN THE GAME IS OVER IT ALL GOES BACK IN THE BOX by John Ortberg By MOTU Review When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box is a book on life by John Ortberg, a Presbyterian pastor. His argument is thus: you will die, and when you do, you will lose all the stuff you have. Therefore, instead of focusing on things you cannot keep, focus on things you can.Ortberg says that the object of life is, as Jesus said, to be rich toward God. Pleasing God is part of this; part of it is putting a greater priority on personal relationships. This also turns out to be the place where we find true fulfillment. Ortberg's main target is those who say they will work less and spend more time with their families "when things settle down." His message is this: things never settle down until it's too late. The book is written with an amusing game theme. Ortberg borrows a lot of anecdotes from a lot of different authors, which is fine. He gives credit where credit is due. Ortberg has a surprisingly good sense of humor. Sometimes his jokes are pretty corny, but on the whole he seems like a funny guy. My only criticism of his writing is a small one: several chapters tend to run a little long (the reader has gotten the point and is ready to move on). There is criticism due the publisher: on nearly every other page, there are excerpts from the text blown up in boxes on the same page. Perhaps this is done for those flipping through the book in a shop, or for those who skim, but for the actual reader, it is incredibly annoying and distracting. On the whole, When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back in the Box is an accessible, engaging, humorous book on Christian living and eternity. This is obviously a Christian book, but the theologizing does not get heavy-handed, and Ortberg does not beat the reader over the head with the Bible. It can benefit any Christian as well as nonchristians who are feeling unfulfilled.RECOMMENDED

I've actually bought 3 additional copies & given them to friends of mine!John's style in this book is engaging, but also pushed me to think deeply about how I'm living. The stories he tells pull you in... and then cause you to reflect on how the topic might be playing out in your own life.I also appreciate how it's more than "John's best thoughts on living" -- but it points back to Scripture time & again. And in doing so, often unveils a dimension of the Bible in a way I'd not considered before. There were quite a few times I'd interrupt my wife while I was reading it, and say "you've gotta hear this section". Prompted some great discussion. Basically... I loved it.

By Stacey When the Game Is Over It All Goes Back In The Box by John Ortberg is an inspiring, enlightening, life-changing book. Since I am an avid gamer, the cover art drew me in immediately. But it was the author's wit and practical advice that captured my attention and kept me reading. It begins with the greatest opening line since The Purpose Driven Life, and guides you through a series of strategies designed to teach the reader how to "play the game" of life.Filled with wit and humor and moving stories, I laughed out loud one minute and found myself tearing up the next as a poignant illustration was presented to show how so many of us miss the important stuff by concentrating so intensely on temporary rewards. The author then offers practical tactics for modifying our "To Do" lists so we can reconnect with what's really important in life. Not only did I take from this book several ideas for improving my life and relationship with God, but also the desire to make a difference in the lives of those around me as John Ortberg and his Grandmother obviously have.

Best Ebook Online Michel Serres A Brief Introduction, by Alan Murray

Michel Serres is one of the most original and dazzlingly inventive thinkers of the last hundred years. But his work is remarkably difficult and employs concepts drawn from almost every field of knowledge, including literary studies, anthropology, mathematics, physics, and biology, making it a daunting prospect for readers schooled exclusively in philosophy or the humanities. Murray’s short book offers a clear, concise, and engaging explanation of Serres’s key ideas, while at the same time situating his project in a tradition that extends from Auguste Comte to Bruno Latour via Gaston Bachelard. Covering almost the whole range of Serres’ thought from his early structuralist analyses of figures such as Lucretius, Zola, and Jules Verne, to his more recent forays into the fields of ecology and politics, this is a book that will be welcomed by anyone seeking a way into this astonishing body of work, or who would like a deeper understanding of its philosophical force and significance. For readers who want a good, clear introduction to Serres’s work, it’s hard to imagine anything better. It’s engaging and well-written, and tells you everything you want to know in the order in which you want to know it. It’s not the comprehensive overview that I’ve been waiting for, but it packs a lot into its modest dimensions, and I came away with a strong sense of what Serres’s work is all about. My only real complaint is that, while the author supplies a very useful set of end notes, he doesn’t provide a full bibliography. On the whole, though, this is a much needed addition to the literature on Serres, and one which I found very helpful. (Anthony F on Amazon.co.uk)

"Maureen Corrigan has produced a minor miracle: a book about The Great Gatsby that stands up to Gatsby itself" --Michael Cunningham. It's a revered classic and a rite of passage in the reading lives of millions. But how well do we really know The Great Gatsby? As "Fresh Air" book critic Maureen Corrigan points out, many of us first read Fitzgerald's masterpiece when we were too young to comprehend its power. Offering a fresh perspective on Gatsby, SO WE READ ON takes readers into archives, high school classrooms, and onto the Long Island Sound to explore the novel's hidden depths, revealing its surprising debt to noir, its rocky path to recognition as a "classic," and its profound commentaries on race, class, and gender. With rigor, wit, and infectious enthusiasm, Corrigan inspires us to re-experience Gatsby and, along the way, spins a fascinating story of her own.Maureen Corrigan is the book critic for NPR's "Fresh Air," the Critic-in-Residence at Georgetown University, and winner of the Edgar Award for Criticism. She is the author of Leave Me Alone, I'm Reading (Random House, 2005).

So We Read On: How The Great Gatsby Came to Be and Why It Endures, by Maureen Corrigan

Review "Maureen Corrigan has produced a minor miracle: a book about The Great Gatsby that stands up to Gatsby itself."―Michael Cunningham"No one is better at bringing a book to life than Maureen Corrigan. Her vividly personal evocation of Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby is at once a labor of love, the story of a quest, and a mother lode of information and insight. As a biography of a novel, it reads like a novel."― Morris Dickstein, author of Gates of Eden and Dancing in the Dark"Second only to the pleasure of re-reading Gatsby is the pleasure of talking to someone about it, and Maureen Corrigan is the ultimate someone: boundlessly erudite, blazingly funny, and infectiously passionate. . . . As with the book that inspired it, my only complaint about So We Read On is that it comes to an end."―Susan Choi, author of My Education"An intoxicating cocktail of talent, celebrity, gangster noir, and the vicissitudes of reputation that create a classic."― Ron Rosenbaum, author of The Shakespeare Wars"As pleasurable to read as Fitzgerald's. ... It's smart and compelling, persuasive without demeaning other interpretations...a gorgeous treat."―The Washington Post"We have to be thankful to Maureen Corrigan for letting us in on her intriguing love affairs with great books, as in this wonderful account of her grand passion for The Great Gatsby. She reminds us that perhaps one true promise of that elusive green light at the end of the dock resides in our creative imagination, and the intimate relationship between a book and its reader."―Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran and The Republic of Imagination"Corrigan's research was as intrepid as her analysis is ardent and expert, and she brings fact, thought, feelings, and personal experiences together in a buoyant, illuminating, and affecting narrative about one depthless novel, the transforming art of reading, and the endless tides that tumble together life and literature."― Booklist (Starred Review)"A literary love letter... [Corrigan's] tone is lively and bright and her enthusiasm for the novel is infectious. You'll feel as if you're attending a lecture by your favorite prof or chatting with a brainy, bookish friend. Bursting with intellectual energy and fun facts, this paean to the 'great American novel will appeal to fans of Corrigan's book critiques and Jazz Age scholars, and will, one hopes, impel readers to pick up the brief work for the first (or fourth, or 14th) time."― Library Journal (Starred Review)"So We Read On is a fine book on many levels, almost too many to list. This book is a love story about a book. It's an expression of love for one of the most lyrical and engaging and prescient novels in the English language. Maureen Corrigan writes not only with passion about her subject, she writes with an understanding of America and the elusive goal represented by the green light on Daisy's dock."―James Lee Burke"Coaxing us aboard her narrative Tilt-A-Whirl, Corrigan spins us from topic to topic and back again, each revolution both reminding and enriching."―Cleveland Plain Dealer"So We Read On is a marvelous mix of the high and the low: solid literary criticism delivered in a user-friendly manner, coupled with the back story of the book's creation, replete with the sordid details of Scott (and Zelda) Fitzgerald's sad, unfulfilled promise."―BookPage"Too genuine and moving to be resisted...[a] generous spirit warms every page of So We Read On."―The Boston Globe"NPR's resident Fitzgerald aficionado delivers the college seminar we all wish we'd taken."―O, The Oprah Magazine

And for the most part I did. Dr. Corrigan, who teaches a course on Fitzgerald at Georgetown, knows her subject well and presents it competently. But I feel like she ran out of Fitzgerald material and relied on Corrigan material before the book came to an end. We get too much information about Corrigan and how difficult it was to track down sources or do the research for the book. I felt like I was getting the bibliographic notes section of the book, when I was still in the last chapter. The sections detailed the literary revival of Gatsby and Fitzgerald also seemed inconclusive. As luck would have it, I have read five "books about books" in the last year or so. If you are similarly inclined, my personal rankings of them would be 1. The World's Most Dangerous Book, (about Joyce's Ulysess) 2. The Empire of Necessity (about Melville's Benito Cereno, 3.) Thomas Paine and the Rights of Man by Christopher Hitchens 4.) So We Read, and 5.) The Zhivago Affair, about Boris Pasternak and the effort to get Dr. Zhivago published.

Scott Fitzgerald died at age 44, the victim of a turbulent life of alcohol, high living and emotional trauma. Unhappily, at his passing, he was not a revered star of the literary world. What would become his literary bequest to the world, his novel THE GREAT GATSBY, was barely an afterthought in literature. A few years before his death, Fitzgerald sadly discussed the book’s languid literary status in a plaintive letter to his editor, Max Perkins: “I wish it was in print. It will be odd a year or so from now when Scottie assures her friends I was an author and finds that no book is procurable….” Fitzgerald’s funeral would be eerily similar to that of Jay Gatsby --- barely anyone attended.Today, 90 years after its publication, THE GREAT GATSBY is one of the most read books in the world. It is on the reading list of almost every high school literature class in America and is the one American novel that most educated Americans have read. SO WE READ ON asks why. And while author Maureen Corrigan cannot really answer that, she does offer readers wonderful insight into the life of its troubled author and some suggestions as to why readers seem to be “borne back ceaselessly” into its thrall.Corrigan is the book critic for NPR’s “Fresh Air” and a professor of literature at Georgetown University. She teaches THE GREAT GATSBY as a labor of love, even going so far as to travel with her students to New York City to experience “the living text of the city.” She believes that Fitzgerald loved the Big Apple as he wrote the book. He had visited there while a student at Princeton and returned after military service. New York City of the ’20s suited his life aspirations. Part of Corrigan’s affinity for the classic work obviously stems from her love of New York. It is an enthralling combination. For Corrigan, THE GREAT GATSBY is just about perfect, despite going against every expectation of what a Great American Novel should be. Length and plot development are not exhaustive, and the end is fairly predictable. Readers learn the basics of Jay Gatsby’s life but with very little detail. How he earned his fortune can still be debated, although most would attribute his money to some illegal activity. His early romance with Daisy also leaves many unanswered questions. Readers know very little about Nick, the narrator of the story. But perhaps it is the unanswered questions and the brevity of the novel that make it so majestic. It simply does not fit the mold for what most scholars would require of a great novel. It may not be hefty in pages, but it contains some of the most beautiful sentences ever written. Fitzgerald may suggest that the American Dream is a mirage, but his words serve to make it irresistible. The book’s brevity may contribute to its appreciation and greatness in another fashion: readers often return to it to savor its elegant writing once again.SO WE READ ON discusses not only THE GREAT GATSBY but also its role in culture. Corrigan mentions the novel’s various movie versions. Surprisingly her favorite is the least known: the 1949 version starring Alan Ladd. It interprets the novel as an underworld crime saga as opposed to the more modern films that treat the book as a love story. One of the joys of reading comes from new discoveries. I anxiously await the opportunity to watch the one movie version of THE GREAT GATSBY that I have yet to see. There is much more to enjoy in Corrigan’s paen to Fitzgerald’s novel. Readers are reminded of his brief Hollywood life and the tragedy that would envelop both him and his wife, Zelda. Corrigan reminds us that many great authors have been “one-hit wonders,” but laments Fitzgerald’s failure to reach his potential as a writer as a loss for literature, as well as a personal one. SO WE READ ON enriches THE GREAT GATSBY and those who read it.Reviewed by Stuart Shiffman

Collins A special thank you to Little Brown & Company and NetGalley for a complimentary reading copy in exchange for an honest review. (also purchased the audiobook). So We Read On: How The Great Gatsby Came to Be and Why It Endures, by Maureen Corrigan offers extraordinary insights and commentary, into the real meaning behind this timeless classic; the characters, the time, viewpoints and perspectives, symbolism, comparisons, and interesting tidbits of this talented author, Scott Fitzgerald; inspiring readers to re-read, to experience the life of the good and the bad of this exciting era and the "American Dream".As a huge fan of The Great Gatsby, having read it many times, during my younger years, and within the last few years, the movie, performances, reading the book again twice, and listened to the audiobook. Have also read Z, Zelda Fitzgerald and many other books surrounding this intriguing couple. Wow, So We Read On was outstanding!A thought provoking and compelling view with a fresh look and perspective into the symbolism between the life of Scott Fitzgerald and Gatsby character. I listened to the audiobook, read by the author; so right on, as her vast knowledge is reflective throughout the pages. I was so engrossed, as I am a big research nut and loved Corrigan's passion and extensive insights (what a super idea going back to the high school as everyone has a different take). The entire time I was listening to this captivating book, I was thinking "Wow, Corrigan could duplicate this book with all the classics out there!" It would be incredible, as I for one would buy anything she writes. So We Read On is a book you will want to buy (as ideal for reference, gifts, and would make a great book club choice, or for lectures, discussions, groups, etc.), as I found myself trying to make notes while listening to the audio, so need to go back and buy the e-book in order to make notes, as there is so much to take in. I cannot possibly hit on all my notes as you have to read the book; however, some of the main items I found fascinating, are listed on my blog as do not want to make the review too lengthy. A few highlights:The Great Gatsby is not a character driven or plot driven novel; it is a voice driven novel. Gatsby is the ultimate enigma and center of the novel. The Great Gatsby is similar to Scott's end of relationship with Zelda. Symbolic of The price of the American Dream. A junior high or high school student views The Great Gatsby, versus a mature adult (totally different), as why you need to re-read many times as you age, as the meaning is profound. The isolation of Gatsby's life, as he is always alone, similar to Fitzgerald's life (many similarities, depending on what was going on in his personal life with Zelda and timing). Burial, etc. The meaning behind the rainbow of shirts, the cars, the parties, the glitz, glamour, money - Does Daisy think Gatsby is becoming like Tom? What happened to the poor humble boy, is he gone? The Great Depression (lights out), parties and black Tues 1929; good times cannot roll on indefinitely. The Great Gatsby projects allusion. A funny novel, comedy like novel. The Great Gatsby is really the only successful book Fitzgerald wrote, and unfortunately was not appreciated until after his death. Represents rich careless people - detached poetic style. Page for page is elaborately patterned. The complexity of the novel so overlooked. The American Dream is irresistible, heartbreaking and buoyant. Gatsby and Daisy's reunion took place in the middle of the novel (which is important). Billboard and green light (symbols); patterns and narrative structure; always reaching and striving and still unable to find happiness. A hard boiled story. The novel is wildly over designed. Brilliantly written.Drawing on the author's own experience as a reader, lecturer, and critic; a powerful read you will not want to miss. I was blown away! Corrigan is witty and brutally honest and yes, you definitely will want to re-experience Gatsby in new more favorable light. Read both - Highly recommend!

What did the Dalai Lama say to the pizza guy from Brooklyn? “Make me one with everything!” It’s a familiar joke, muses Lama Surya Das, but it holds a profound truth: that in addition to inner peace, meditation is a path for all-inclusive connection .With Make Me One with Everything, he invites us to experience this expansive dimension of the dharma through the art of intermeditation.   “If you’ve ever felt ‘at one’ with something—your beloved or your child, a wooded trail, a favorite song—then you’ve experienced intermeditation,” teaches Surya Das .Based on Tibetan Buddhism’s core insights into the deeply connected nature of who we are, intermeditation offers both new and experienced meditators a fresh new way to commune with every moment—on and off the cushion—in oneness with our partners, our family and friends, our enemies, those in need near or far, our higher Selves, and Nature itself.

Make Me One with Everything: Buddhist Meditations to Awaken from the Illusion of Separation, by Lama Surya Das

Review “Lama Surya Das is a true American treasure, and this may be his most important book yet. In a time when meditation and mindfulness are being turned into navel-gazing narcissism, yoga is being sold as a sexy commodity, and many of our religious truths are being used to advance a gospel of spiritual materialism, Lama Surya Das sets the record straight, reminding us what authentic spirituality is all about and how it can help us to heal ourselves and our world. I hope everyone will read this book—it has the potential to change the direction of American spirituality.” —Adam Bucko, coauthor of Occupy Spirituality: A Radical Vision for a New Generation and The New Monasticism: An Interspiritual Manifesto for Contemplative Living   “With his characteristic freshness, clarity, and wisdom, Lama Surya Das invites us into the vibrant domain of relationship with ourselves and all beings. This book nourishes the heart through awareness practices—co-meditations—that are expertly attuned to daily life and awaken us from the trance of separation. Please dip in! Realizing our inherent connectedness is the hope for healing our world.” —Tara Brach, PhD, author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge   “In Make Me One with Everything, Lama Surya Das once again expands the scope of understanding what spiritual practice is all about. Through teachings, stories, personal encounters, and the depth of his own practice, he shows with wisdom, clarity, and humor that in interconnection—inter-meditation—nothing is left out. A much-needed perspective in these times.” —Joseph Goldstein, author of Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening   “A marvelous account of how we meet each other in meditation and life, this book is filled with wisdom, humor, and richness about the how’s and why's of inter-meditation.” —Roshi Joan Halifax, abbot of Upaya Zen Center   “There are many meditation books out there. This is not one of them. What it teaches is delightfully different from ordinary mindfulness, and deeply profound. If you've gotten your feet wet with mindfulness and are ready for a deeper dive, make yourself one with this book.” —Jay Michaelson, author of Everything is God: The Radical Path of Nondual Judaism and Evolving Dharma: Meditation, Buddhism, and the Next Generation of Enlightenment   “A survival manual for our Hearts. Lama Surya Das is transmitting the most profound essence teachings in the language we speak and understand in the West. A great blessing for all of us.” —Krishna Das, chant master and devotee of Neem Karoli Baba   “Make Me One with Everything is an important contribution to the new discussion of the future of religion and spirituality in our globalizing age. Sociologists identify this discussion as a ‘strategic divide’ ripe with ‘religious identity paradox’ as we move from parochial, tradition-driven religion to the difficulties of a global multicultural civilization. The insights in this book shed important light on how diversity need not become difference and then division. Three cheers!” —Kurt Johnson, PhD, coauthor of The Coming Interspiritual Age   “In this book, the most published and perhaps best known American Tibetan Buddhist writer unfolds his teaching of ‘inter-meditation,’ a path to discovering, as he says, ‘Our oneness with everything.’ The author’s folksy writing style and extensive use of examples, personal anecdotes, and stories makes this book eminently accessible to beginner and advanced alike. Drawing on the teachings of many different religions as well as his own insights and discoveries, Surya Das shows how a spiritual life in the modern world is not only possible, but very doable.” —Reginald A. Ray, author of Touching Enlightenment   “Surya Das has taken a huge and profound leap into Relational Buddhism and inter-meditation through his original co-meditations and other daily life practices and spiritual exercises. This is a beautiful and practical book revealing what the ancient teachings and teachers can powerfully illuminate about deepening and strengthening relationships in our contemporary lives. A wonderful, highly readable, and wise contribution to the awakening-awareness movement today!” —Janet Surrey and Samuel Shem, authors of The Buddha’s Wife: The Path of Awakening Together   “In this captivating book, Lama Surya Das introduces a potpourri of methods that illuminate inter-meditation. He has put together a powerful and loving argument for inter-meditation, which ultimately leads to the experience of oneness. There are wonderful flashes of humor and fascinating stories as well as the wisdom that he has culled from his venerable Tibetan Buddhism lineage.” —Ram Dass, author of Be Here Now and Polishing the Mirror “Life’s journey is an exciting, scary, unpredictable, and beautiful path. We can choose to walk the path with grace, humor, and love, or we can fight the path with ignorance and frustration. It is critical to have a good friend walk the path with you at various times to help you see the beauty and serenity of the path. In my Indian tradition, we call this a Pad Yatra, a spiritual foot journey. We conduct Pad Yatras all over the world and the Himalayas so that we may better understand ourselves, other beings, and the world. An integral part of the Pad Yatras are the gurus and their teachings. It is considered one of the world’s greatest blessings to walk with a great teacher, to follow the footsteps of a great being—the blessings bestowed and the wisdom imparted can carry you through life’s many challenges and surprises. In this book, Make Me One with Everything, Lama Surya Das walks with the reader through life’s experiences while imparting ancient wisdom through the voice of a familiar friend. The modern world is a distracting, fast-paced place.  Ancient Buddhist wisdom, unfiltered, can be esoteric and seem irrelevant. Lama Surya Das breaks down pieces of these precious Buddhist teachings and translates them so that they are approachable, easy to understand, relevant to today’s society, and preserve the ancient wisdom of sacred teachings. As an old friend of Lama Surya Das, I am very excited that he is sharing his talent, voice, humor, and wisdom with the world. May you be blessed with insight as you embark upon your “Book Yatra” with Lama Surya Das. This wisdom is meant to be universal and should appeal to anyone at any life stage, anywhere in the world. May it help you in your life and may it inspire you to help all the countless beings in the world. May all beings be blessed with a spiritual path and a spiritual guide.” —His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa, Head of the Drukpa Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism

I highly recommend all of his books to anyone By Barbara K Regardless of other masters I have studied and practiced with, Lama Surya Das has a unique way of explaining and adapting profound buddhist concepts and practices into ones readily accesible and understandable to non-buddhists and also providing advanced and experienced practitioners with simple and kind key point reminders. I highly recommend all of his books to anyone, including those who are already trying to live radical non-denominational dzogchen buddhism and transmit the dharma in their daily thoughts words and activities.

Authentic, accessible and a pleasure to experience By CC Surya Das clearly has both feet firmly planted in the 1,500-year-old Himalayan tradition of the lineage he holds, and simultaneously in the vivid realities of today's Western world. Like his Awakening the Buddha Within, this book turns out to be a tremendous combination of timeless wisdom and timely skills that can benefit anyone. Deftly weaving together threads of compassion, reverence, relationships, intimacy, adversity, joyfulness, mortality and transcendence with his evocative word-plays and pithy one-liners, the author offers readers a delightfully accessible, entertaining and nonetheless deeply transformative experience. Don't miss it! One of the very best books from this best-selling author, authentic spiritual mentor and downright mensch. Totally well worth the read!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. One of his best books! By S. K. Cormier As usual, Surya Das takes complex subjects and brings to them a beautiful clarity that allows the reader to immediately understand and incorporate his wisdom into their own lives. His new book, Make Me One with Everything, is a treasure of information to help all aspiring Buddhists and non-Buddhists find balance through techniques of what he terms inter-meditation. These techniques include meditation, contemplation and dialoguing with others in order to see that we are all interconnected in our humanity - we are all one with everything. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with the questions of how to find harmony and peace in our crazy, hectic lives. Surya Das has decades of training in Tibetan Buddhism and he guides us with that ancient wisdom as well as his grounded, honest and loving interpretations for the Western seeker.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ~ A Nice Serving Of Chaos Magick ~ By SilverLining I really enjoyed this book on Gods and Goddesses and here's why :1) Right at the top of the book, the author identifies this as Chaos Magick, since there's a mix of different deities from different cultures and belief systems. He also seems to identify with the idea of Eclectic Pagan, which is similar - right away, establishing that this book is not for the narrower minded magick folk .2) The book is written in a PRACTICAL manner. There are actionable ways to apply what's revealed in this book. For example, you are looking for a new way to connect with some of the beings outlined in this book. And here, it's nice to see new methods that worked for others, that resonate with you and that you can apply to your craft.3) No oversell. I think that's what they call it? You know, where the author is really trying to sell you something else (like a $500 course, or more books). This book is exactly what it claims to be. A manual to improve your magick activities. That's it. It's a book/manual designed to help you improve your life.4) No bias here. It seems as if the author, his occult group, has picked these deities based on their attributes and characteristics - along with their experience of interacting with them. That’s what you call Chaos Magic. There are no opinion pieces on the various types of philosophies, or any bias to any type or types of belief systems.Add this book to your Magick library without any hesitation.

I am not disappointed in taking a chance with this great little gem of a book. The illustrations are beautiful. I got a lot out of the descriptions of the archangels, gods and goddesses, and deities of all of the worldly religions. I highly suggest you add this knowledge to your craft.

Joe Vitale takes us through the three steps of gratitude, detachment, and inspired action, but gives examples of how successful people had their prayers answered and different techniques fro being grateful and detached. He describes a synthesis of the three steps. When you are grateful it creates detachment because your attitude is It would be nice" instead of "I have to have it" and that in turn makes inspired action easier. He gives us several methods of meditation, sample prayers, and visual exercises including the "Prayer Wheel, among others. He mentions Barry Neil Kaufman and "The Option Institute". I have been to some of their programs and it is an amazing place to retreat and grow.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their prayer life. It has a plethora of techniques so you are bound to find a way of prayer that works for you.

However the audio version not so much. I am only through the first two chapters and wish I could return the audio. At the end of each spoken segment you are jarred by some ear splitting music. Hopefully the next audio book will include more soothing musical transitions between chapters.

This book is about two very different kinds of company. On the one hand it concerns Shakespeare's poet-playwright contemporaries, such as Marlowe, Jonson, and Fletcher. On the other, it examines the contribution of his fellow actors, including Burbage, Armin, and Kemp. Traditionally, criticism has treated these two influences in separation, so that Shakespeare is considered either in relation to educated Renaissance culture, or as a man of the theatre. Shakespeare in Company unites these perspectives. Bart van Es argues that Shakespeare's decision, in 1594, to become an investor (or 'sharer') in the newly formed Chamberlain's acting company had a transformative effect on his writing, moving him beyond the conventions of Renaissance dramaturgy. On the basis of the physical distinctiveness of his actors, Shakespeare developed 'relational drama', something no previous dramatist had explored. This book traces the evolution of that innovation, showing how Shakespeare responded to changes in the personnel of his acting fellowship and to competing drama, such as that produced for the children's companies after 1599. Covering over two decades of theatrical history, van Es explores the playwright's career through four distinct phases, ending on the conditions that shaped Shakespeare's late style. Paradoxically, Shakespeare emerges as a playwright unique 'in company'--special, in part, because of the unparalleled working conditions that he enjoyed.

Shakespeare in Company, by Bart Van Es

Review "[T]his study will surely be an important and oft-cited contribution to a myriad of topics in Shakespeare studies." --Cithara

"Above all, [Van Es'] concern is, as his title proclaims, not so much with the great dramatist himself as with his acting companions... It is the principal aim of the author to show in detail how the formation of the Chamberlain's Men, with Shakespeare both as a prominent sharer in the company and as its sole playwright, made all the difference between his earlier plays... [W]hat the author has to say may be of great interest to Shakespeare scholars." --The Heythrop Journal

"[An] absorbing study." --The New Criterion

"Highly recommended." --Choice

Rousmaniere The book greatly influences my thinking about Shakespeare’s plays, down to individual characters and scenes. As a general reader with a non-professional, non academic sustained interested in Shakespeare, Es’ book is of the dozen or so books about the Shakespeare the most insightful and really helpful for me to appreciate the plays. Es appears to have everything remotely related to 1590 – 1610 English theater and literary conventions. Working chronologically, Es analyzes Shakespeare’s plays (and to a much less extent his poetry) in light of what else was going on of note, not least of which was Shakespeare’s membership in a company of actors (Lord Chamberlain’s Men), playhouse ownership (the Globe) and for a brief time playhouse lease (Blackfriar’s). His approach is methodical but not tedious. As a general reader, I found myself tempted to skip infrequently. He finishes with a rousing concluding chapter, in which he says that the conventional image of Shakespeare is a giant alone among lesser mortals was a creation of Coleridge and has persisted through today via Harold Bloom and others. Es poses a contrasting prolife of a extremely talented and financially successful writer who was deeply engaged in the to and fro of the theater community – hence co-authorships early and late in his career – and in writing for a stable group of actors over a long period of time. Es delves into several plays in order to explore Shakespeare’s evolving choice of topics and style. These plays include Richard III, Richard II, Hamlet, the Tempest, and Two Noble Kinsmen. But if the reader has a fair acquaintance with 12- 15 of the plays, the discussion in the book will spark constantly associations in the reader’s mind.A tantalizing idea which Es addresses in his usual economic style is the relationships between Richard Burbage, the main tragic protagonist actor, the competitive position of the Globe in the 1600s, and the development of Shakespearean characters (notably Hamlet) who possessed a kind of flawed self-reflectiveness, a deepening self-awareness compared to theatrical convention and contradicted by the character’s actual behavior. (after page 238).The reader will finish E’s book with a far richer understanding of Shakespeare.

2 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A thorough and thoughtful textbook By John Hudson Dr Van Es argues that stylistic changes in the Shakespearean plays post the formation of the Lord Chamberlain's Men in 1594 derived from Shakespeare's structural and financial position as a 'sharer' or 'house-keeper' in the company. I would certainly agree that there were changes in the plays once the playwright was able to write for a consistent group of players. That however does not depend on the playwright's position as a sharer, which in itself rather had a financial impact. While the result of being a sharer was that Shakespeare was in a unique financial position in 1594, and unlike other playwrights was not dependent on selling play scripts for a living, having financially comfortable circumstances does not translate into his capacity as a writer---since when the most ambitious projects of all were written, namely the two Tetralogies, he was not well off as far as we know.

People don’t give to church because we don’t offer them a compelling vision of the good their giving will achieve. Hearing a young attorney speak of the faithbased reasons for which he had just made a substantial monetary gift to a community youth center, Clif Christopher asked the speaker if he would consider making a similar contribution to the congregation of which he was an active member. “Lord, no they would not know what to do with it” was the answer. That, in a nutshell, describes the problem churches are facing in their stewardship efforts, says Christopher. Unlike leading nonprofit agencies and institutions, we too often fail to convince potential givers that their gifts will have impact and significance. In this book, Christopher lays out the main reasons for this failure to capture the imagination of potential givers, including our frequent failure simply to ask. Written with the needs of pastors and stewardship teams in mind, Not Your Parents’ Offering Plate provides immediate, practical guidance to all who seek to help God’s people be better stewards of their resources.

By Jay Stevenson Every coin has two sides, but the church seems stuck on one side. This book is not about the traditional biblical stewardship message of tithing (i.e., one side of the Stewardship coin). Of course, all church folks should be responding to the grace of God by returning a tenth (In case you need a reminder, go read the OT prophet book of Malachi, Chapter 3).This book focuses on the other side of the Stewardship coin, HOW DO WE PROMOTE GIVING in the church when we COMPETE against all the thousands of other non-profit organizations asking for that same dollar traditionally given to the church. What I like about this book is the new perspective on how to challenge people to give to the church using the good marketing techniques used by the competition. Yes, we (the leadership of the church) need to tell our people of the good things we do with the gifts (tithes and offerings) the church receives. We need to give the poeple of our congregations a reason to give their charity dollars to the church. The book provides excellent examples of good and bad from the author's real life experiences. It also highlites what the pastor and Stewardship Committee (or Trustees) should be doing to accomplish this new marketing perspective.I thought so highly of this book that I personally bought five additional copies for our church's Stewardship Committee and Pastor. After reading the book, you might want to consider doing the same for your leaders...

Very practical solutions to understanding the dynamics of church giving and to rethink the ways of fund raising. A must read for church leaders because it makes us take a good look at ourselves regarding our ministerial responsibilities. The book was a very easy read. I flew from Michigan to Atlanta, GA. I was done with the book before the plane landed and I retained almost 90% of what I read.

I've been working at stewardship for over 20 years w/in my church. This book fired me up to look at our efforts compared to non profits, something I have been unwilling to do, and has energized our leadership with new ideas and approaches. At the very least, the following quote should make you think- ". . .you are not in the business to balance budgets or manage money. You are in the business to change lives for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ--that is it. You have no other reason to exist. If you are not doing that, then get out of the way and let someone else have your spot." P17

“—You have a very beautiful writing style. It sort of reminds me of poetry in the way it has a flowing rhythm to it. I felt your heart and emotion on every page.” — Amanda K. fillmybookshelf.com “Chris, when I read you I am hearing a new, contemporary Black male voice, a male voice unique in today’s market. A voice with a compelling power like Walter Mosley’s.“ — Stanley L. “Your writing strikes me as kind of Walt Whitman-esque, with a touch of noir.“ — Jim D. its-your-story.weebly.com Soondie Slaton is joint owner of a thriving niche shop in the heart of SoHo, partnered with a business-savvy long-lost cousin who is more like a close-knit brother, surrounded by adoring and supportive friends, and the object of affection from the most desired girl from around the way. However, the world of young Soon Sun seems to be eclipsed in darkness. Or so he thinks… Granted, he has experienced his fair share of tragedies, however in recent times his life has been going well. Still, he can’t shake the feeling that there is the other proverbial shoe waiting to drop. And now, happening upon the dawn of his 27th birthday, Soondie is expecting the dreaded doom and gloom to come at any moment. To his dismay, it doesn’t. Over the course of the year, he is slowly shown the tenet of life: that it may not be just, but it’s fair. As he perhaps anticipated, Soondie does experience losses inasmuch as gains. The question is, does that give him cause to check out? The decision is his, despite what he may be led to believe. Shadows of the past shape who we are and can hold us back. We move forward while standing still. 27 Yards An’ Runnin’… is the story of a young man wondering what his life means and where it is going. Running on equal parts optimism, fatalism, cynicism and wonder, we navigate Soondie’s world, love and life. Follow young Soon as he narrates his story— current and past, set to a diverse soundtrack and projected upon with stylized images and enriched atmosphere. The closer he comes to reconciliation, the closer he’s met with what he believes as an impasse.

Phil Moore writing style is as if having a visual conversation with somebody you trust that will give you all of it. The characters are so real that you will say "I know her" "That guy reminds me of..." From the first page to the last I could see this very talented author P.O.V. into this genre. i can't wait to read his next piece.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. love, family By Kandice There are many voices in urban fiction that we don't want to hear telling stories we don't want told. 27 Yards an Running offered fresh insight to the quarter life crisis that most adults face but also the perspective of that crisis from a character very well be an endangered species in this country. Success, love, family, and friendship are all represented without coming across as trite or didactic. I enjoyed the novel thoroughly.

CPA AWARD WINNERIPPY AWARD WINNER"This may be the book to hook a new generation on the religious power of Teilhard's vision of divine presence in matter and the evolving universe." --Elizabeth A. Johnson, CSJ"From the viewpoint of our present understanding of the universe it could be said that Teilhard is the most significant Christian theologian since Saint Paul . . . Spirit of Fire is especially clear in its exposition of the mystical dimension of Teilhard's life within this context." --Thomas BerryIn the twenty years since the original publication of Spirit of Fire the influence of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin--renowned French Jesuit theologian, mystic, and scientist--has continued to spread. He is widely regarded as one of the true prophets of our age, bringing Christian theology into creative dialogue with the new cosmology, expanding the dialogue between religion and science, and opening up profound dimensions of the human condition. The text of Ursula King's lucid biography is enhanced quotations from Teilhard and scores of photographs that document his dramatic life--from the trenches of World War I, to his groundbreaking paleontological research in China and travels in the Gobi Desert. This revised edition, which includes a new chapter on Teilhard's legacy, is the ideal introduction to the life and thought of a remarkable man whose vision and life-affirming spirituality speak even more vitally to the concerns of our time.

Spirit of Fire: The Life and Vision of Teilhard de Chardin, by Ursula King

Amazon.com Review Teilhard de Chardin, a 20th-century Jesuit priest and paleontologist, is a favorite theologian of contemporary notables such as Al Gore, Mario Cuomo, Marshall McCluhan, and cyberguru John Perry Barlow. Cuomo has said, "Teilhard made negativism a sin. He taught us how the whole universe--even pain and imperfection--is sacred." Ursula King, in Spirit of Fire: The Life and Vision of Teilhard de Chardin, has written an accessible, entertaining, and lavishly illustrated biography of Teilhard. His writings were all but ignored during his lifetime, but now serve as a lifeline for people of faith struggling to define divine imperatives for ecological responsibility and technological engagement.

About the Author Ursula King was found of the Teilhard Centre in London. Her many books include Christian Mystics: Their Lives and Legacies Throughout the Ages, Teilhard de Chardin and Easter Religions, and Teilhard de Chardin: Essential Writings.

By A Customer This is a fine introduction to the prolific life and writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, the most important theologian of the 20th century. Chardin's theology, banned for years by the Vatican, was at least a hundred years ahead of it's time. A geologist, palenthologist, mystic, spiritual lover, he proposed that Darwin's theories of evolution were not contrary to God's revelation but actually was Revelation.King's book does a good job of detailing Chardin's life, his passions, his pursuits, his beliefs and his science. Though dry and slow at times, the author does help to illuminate the theology of someone who isn't easy to read. Though he lived a rich life, Chardin's writing can be somewhat cold and too scientific at times for the layreader to understand. This book, however, is good solid primer and should be the starting point for anyone interested in a man ahead of his time.

The Universe And Mankind Are Both Evolving Towards Perfection By Peter Kenney Ursula King's biography of Teihard de Chardin is a fascinating book written in a style which makes a difficult subject seem quite understandable. King weaves the story of Teihard's life around snapshots of his constantly maturing vision of God, the universe and mankind.Known for his original concepts such as the ongoing evolution of both the universe and mankind towards perfection and the existence of a global network of self-awareness, Teihard was always regarded as a loose canon by the Vatican. Consequently, not much of his work was released during his lifetime except for those relatively few items which were privately published and distributed among a circle of his friends. Since his death in 1955 all his books and essays have been made available to the general public. Teihard nurtured close, supportive relationships with a small number of caring females and left many letters which reveal the importance of these women in his life.Although at times he is difficult to comprehend, there is no doubt that Teihard ranks as one of the most prominent thinkers of the twentieth century. The fact that he is recognized as a famous and respected scientist as well as a mystic, greatly increases his significance.

Chardin is someone who has touched my heart deeply from the time I first heard about him many years ago. I was fascinated by the few things I heard about his philosophy and theology. I also hear a lot of new-age citations of him that sound like foolishness. His only work that I read with understanding was "Mass on the World." This short piece was a window into a beautiful soul. Ms. King's work is a sweeping and breathtaking panorama of his life and thought. Her observations are well documented with quotes and pictures of his life and works. I am particularly impressed with how she honors his fidelity to the church's magisterium and his vows. I read this book in three segments. I had to pause to absorb the magnitude of what I read and experienced. The first part was his early life ending with his service in WWI. I remain astounded at his bravery and his complete experience of all the most horrible battles of that war. I do wish the author had made clearer what bored him about the study of Thomas Aquinas. Was he reading poor presentations of Thomas' thought or what problem did he see in Thomas. At his time in Fr. Chardin's life, Thomas was being resurrected by fellow jesuits, one of them, Henri de Lubac, was a close friend. Also J. Maritan and E. Gilson were active. The second segment was his life's work and exile to China. I remain amazed at the energy he gave to science and writing. A powerful mind was at work to make sense of what he learned. I was exhaused reading of his exploits. The third segment was his closing years and his infirmimity. This was a prayerful reading. I was especially touched by his words to a friend, "I always feel God's presence now." The only shortfall I'm seeing in Fr. Chardin's life work is how to get where he saw the need to go. How to learn how I can best make Christ present. Too many new-agers have co-opted Fr. Chardin to make us think we can pull ourselves up by the bootstraps to evolve to the next age. All evolution is in God's Providence. This book really brought Fr. Chardin to life and helped me understand his meaning and message. Another title that brought Fr. Chardin to life is "For the Time Being" by Annie Dillard. Read and Enjoy.
