After his daughter was born prematurely in 2010, Burriesci set out to write a book for her eighteenth birthday. In short, honest, and simple letters, Burriesci teaches his daughter about thirty-two great books, from Plato to Karl Marx, and how their lessons have applied to his life. As someone who has spent a long and successful career advocating for great literature, Burriesci defends the titles in this series of tender and candid letters, rich in personal experience and full of humor. Dead White Guys is also a timely defense of the great books, arriving in the middle of a national debate about the fate of these books in high schools and universities around the country. Burriesci shows how the great books can enrich our lives as individuals, as citizens, and in our careers.

Dead White Guys: A Father, His Daughter, and the Great Books of the Western World, by Matt Burriesci

Review “Dead White Guys is much more than “Western Civ for Dummies”: What Burriesci is passionate about is why these books matter, what they have to say to us in the 21st century about life’s persistent questions, as well as more particular cases: Sept. 11 and its aftermath, for example, and income inequality. The chapters frequently begin with a frank, often unflattering personal episode: staying silent while friends blew up frogs with firecrackers; making fun of gays; living a dissipated, druggie lifestyle. In each case, the personal material is spot-on relevant to the concepts under discussion, a testament to the growth and change that can occur when we examine our lives with courage, honesty, compassion and logic." - Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Burriesci takes the theories of our history's great thinkers and connects their contributions to today's world. Underneath it all is an autobiography in the form of a letter to his daughter. There is an element of honesty and vulnerability that explains why the author wants his young daughter to be eighteen years old before she reads this book that is written for her. Some sections are an homage to his hometown and the people in it. Other parts are far darker, but all express lessons learned from his life. Well done!

Although the book's trope is that this is a book of a father's notes to his daughter, it is much more than that. It is a demonstration of how one's life can be shaped positively by finding the elements of "Great Books" that can speak to an open-minded individual, that can help us think about the basics such as what is freedom? what is society? what is truth? what is important? why are we here. Avoids all the cant and "can't" of academia that turns off so many to learning, and shows how you can bypass the industry of academic thought that disguises itself as original thinking. This is a book in which the writer (and reader) can pass go, collect two hundred dollars, have one's mind liberated, if just a little, from the prison house of language that disguises itself as free thought.

I liked the personal stories the author used to open a chapter and then use to explain how it tied in to one of the "Dead White Guys" so named in the title. And I finally learned what "Hamlet" is all about! The contents could have been dry and plodding, but the author kept it moving. Thanks!
