2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Superficial By lec Given its age and the period in which it was written, this is not a bad book, but not terribly useful. Many of the older histories of the Middle Ages continue to be classics for good reason, with considerable scholarship involved (regardless of some views that would be considered totally inappropriate now). This book certainly would not be in the "classic" mode. It is relatively shallow and tends to gloss over some of the less positive aspects of the military orders. Its main focus is on the Knights of St John (Knights of Malta), with a rather superficial treatment of their history. A much, much better treatment, although focusing predominantly on the actual siege of Malta, is Ernle Bradford, The Great Siege: Malta 1565, which is highly recommended. The Woodhouse book is recommended only for its low price and for those who want a very superficial outline.

Comprehensive and Detailed By Kindle Customer This is a well-researched and well-written chronology of the various military-religious orders, particularly focusing on their purposes and actions in rebuilding Christian rule in the Levant.Specific battles are detailed and the personalities of their leadership explored. I would have preferred more attention devoted to how the orders worked in concert and on their mercantile and banking empires. But overall the author lays a strong foundation of knowledge for deeper study of this remarkable and strangely compelling slice of history.
