Reunited: A Cybil Lewis Story (The Cybil Lewis Series), by Nicole Givens Kurtz

From the Back Cover "Who are you?" the inhuman voice demanded. Gloved hands slung the cannon around narrow shoulders clothed in the moon colony's spacesuit style. "Cybil Lewis," I replied, not even trying to hide my identity. With my laser gun and its holster hung up back in the D.C. Quadrant on Earth, I wouldn't be able to lie my way out of this one.  No gun, so no threatening him into submission. Layers of nylon cotton blend kept me warm despite the frigid manufactured moon air, but the dread piling into my belly--it burned. The snitch's tip that Charlotte Satou was here had been suspect to begin with. This ambush confirmed it. I glared at the Southeast Territories Marine. The Southeast Territories' tentacles stretched into everything. So it didn't surprise me when I spotted the SE Marine badge stitched onto his shoulder. Yes, they would be in bed with the EuroRepublic's conglomerate of greed and nasal accents. The tint on the visor shielded his face. Was it a robot? The moon colony wars had plowed on for over fifteen years now, so it wouldn't surprise me if they'd gone to using robots because the supply of humans had thinned out. On second thought, no, the being behind the weapon breathed out and in, his ventilation mask unable to successfully strip that away. He carried the plasma cannon like he'd been born with it. But his stance bordered on sloppy. "What are you doing here?" he asked. "I can't tell you that. You want my telemonitor's IP address? That you can have," I said, giving him a grin I used to seduce potential clients. "As to anything else, well, you can't have it." "I can take it," he leered. "You can try." With sternness riding through me, I stared at that visor, daring him to carry through the bluff. Yeah, I was many things, but a blabbermouth wasn't one of them.

The awesome fight scene within the first few pages jolts the reader into this strange, new world. Even though this is the 4th book in the series, I felt I needed more definitions of the weapons and an in-depth picture of the surroundings. I was caught off-guard by some the terms the author used.Author Givens Kurtz keeps the reader captivated throughout the story with gems like, “There are so many dead dozens that we’re using open cargo trucks as mass gravesites. The pits are crawlin’ with body snatchers, raiders, and the freakin’ hungry. Stay in the light. Though that alone won’t save you.” You get sucked into this story like a CSI investigator.Readers who love science fiction (with amazing female leads) will enjoy the Cybil Lewis series. A wonderful short read!

Fast paced, with a kicking heroine--- yes, this series is where you can get back into the Sci-Fi groove. Love it! And to find out that it's a series, but reads as a stand alone? Definitely going to check out the other stories! One of the things I love is that it does not sacrifice story or character for the science. Above all, this is a great story with a strong, believable heroine.

By Travis Surber In the interest of complete honesty, I was given a copy of this story by the author as part of a promotion. Having said that I would have gladly bought it. This is the first story I have read by Nicole Givens Kurtz, and I'm definitely picking up more. The story is well paced with several twists that keep you guessing where it's going. Nicole's worldbuilding is impressive. She's able to make the setting feel expansive and complex without resorting to infodumps or "As You Know,Bob" style exposition. I felt like I knew a lot about Cybil, her motivations, and the world she inhabits by the end of the story. In fact I was surprised to discover this was the fourth story in the series as it could have easily been the first with the way Nicole handles everything.I'm going to nitpick a few things though. I do feel some aspects of the world needed more explanation or clarification. These could have been things covered in earlier stories that she assumed readers already knew, but they left me feeling a little lost. I also felt like some of the story relied on coincidence a little too much in order to move forward. I would have liked for the story to be a little longer as well, but that's true of a lot of short stories. In short, I would recommend Reunited to anyone interested in a good mystery in a well realized sci-fi setting with believably human characters.
