Hughes This is a story that takes you from coast to coast...characters of all shapes and sizes, some scoundrels, many regular folks all captured in Annie's wonderful imagination and fanciful illustrations. Who in the world had such wonderful parents? I laughed so hard and wept at times reading this summer story that really captured a time long past now but so special to many of us aging boomers...sex, drugs and old timey music...Annie lived it and now we can too by reading The Whore Next Door: An Illustrated Memoir by Annie Campbell
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Life is Grand! By Joy V. While visiting family, I downloaded on my little tablet Annie Campbell’s, The Whore Next Door: An Illustrated Memoir. I had been anticipating my visit, not only to be with my sons, but to sneak away to Annie’s for a few more tantalizing chapters of The Whore Next Door. My previous visit was nearly two years earlier. At that time, Annie had shared that she was writing a memoir and illustrating each chapter. I asked if she’d read a bit. I snuggled against the couch, enjoying the lilt of her sweet voice and suddenly would hold on to my sides as she described utter indignation at "The Momsies" lack of observation clearly evident in the insubstantial bra selection for her well endowed daughter. Her illustrations jumped in my lap. I begged for just one more chapter, but had to save the rest for another time. Thank you, Amazon.After rousing evening family games of Risk, Monopoly or Parcheesi, I’d feign reluctance to retire to my room, ever so sleepily. Slyly I’d make going to bed noises, shut my light and bask in the electronic glow of my tablet. Colors and words exploded from the glass and raucous laughter exploded from my bed. Each night was the same, snatching chapters, as good as eating chocolate under the covers.The Whore Next Door is completely delightful, engaging, blushingly honest for this old “up-tight” broad, and worth the electronic tan. Like a sister, Annie invites us to share just enough of her personal journey. Her moments of joy, loss, disappointments, achievements, self-realization, guts, honesty, openness and love are presented without apology and are cheerfully triumphant! “Life is grand.” Thanks, Annie.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A memoir taking you down memory lane! By M. Bouchard What a hoot! What a trip! I loved reading this book, with its great illustrations, following Annie's life story, with the wonderful -- indeed, perfect -- ending. Anyway, I pulled out my old, stained, disintegrating copy of Moosewood Cookbook (the first one) today, and for some reason I was thinking, hey, I haven't reviewed Annie Campbell's book yet. It's sort of the same era as the story in this book. I would recommend this book highly to any reader who remembers the 70's and 80's -- or maybe you don't remember because you were too stoned -- but you sort of remember as a time when love was free and drugs were ubiquitous, and everybody did their own thing. This will take you back. Great reading!
