For five years, two murders have lain unsolved and nearly forgotten in the police vault in the quiet little burg of Frederick, Maryland. Until a young lawyer turns up dead, and the familiar pattern of the Coworker killer plunges the sleepy northern town back into darkness. As the body count begins to rise, it soon becomes chillingly obvious that this time the killer has no intention of stopping. Lacking a suspect, hounded for answers by the ravening media, the police have nowhere to turn but Nate Castle, College teacher by day, locally-renowned PI by night. The case of the faceless Coworker murders is the most demanding of his career. Nate is thrust into a spotlight he’s been avoiding for the past decade. Somewhere out there is a predator against which Nate is the only defense, but the troubled detective has his own demons to fight. Haunted by regret, crippled by the bottle, Nate stands alone in the darkness, challenging a foe he cannot see. Then the Coworker makes a small but critical mistake. And that’s when—all hell breaks loose.

He makes that work for him in creating this creepy twisted tale.Rush opens this his fifth novel with an atmospheric rainy night murder - the kind of Prologue written so well that the seeds of the story to come are all well planted. As he completes this introduction he writes, `In a small town like Frederick, when murders happened, the chances were great you knew the person who did it. It might not be someone you hung with, but you could have passed him or her during the course of your stay in that town.' And from there we meet Nate Castle, a college teacher by day and a private investigator by night. Nate has his demons, not the least of which is the bottle, but the author paints him so well that he gradually becomes a man we want to follow - and it seems that we will be able to do just that as this is The First Nate Castle Novel! But on to the synopsis: `For five years, two murders have lain unsolved and nearly forgotten in the police vault in the quiet little burg of Frederick, Maryland. Perhaps this is not a book to read before bedtime, but what mystery is? Nate Castle will be back. Grady Harp, October 14

Then it says `In a small town like Frederick, when murders happened, the chances were great you knew the person who did it. It might not be someone you hung with, but you could have passed him or her during the course of your stay in that town.' Then you meet Nate Castle, a college teacher by day and a private investigator by night. He is an alcoholic except when he is assigned a case. It really is a good book. It is a must read. I am definitely putting this author on my favorite author list.

The town of Frederick has a serial killer, who seems to like killing young women, usually by strangulation, so to the extent that the object of the exercise is to find who did it, this is a mystery/crime story. The prologue, and some later chapters, put the reader inside the mind of the killer, and it tries to give the mind of such a killer. I have no idea whether this is valid, but it is certainly presented well. However, the bulk of the book is from the point of view of Nate Castle, a professor at the local community college and a doctor of forensic psychology, and therefore a consultant to the local police force. Or more precisely, he should be but he is not because he is habitually drunk. About eighty percent of the book involves Nate trying to stop drinking, and shows what the life of a severe alcoholic drying out is like. Thus when Nate goes to a crime scene, he does not really look for clues; instead he looks for somewhere to throw up. Even worse, the senior detective is, well, an alcoholic. The book is rather light on police work, and because we see through Nate's eyes, we are short on clues, partly because Nate cannot focus enough. There is police work, and in the end they follow a logical approach, but because Nate cannot focus, we do not see this until it is explained. Rush inserts some red herrings as well, and at the end, when things are resolved, I was far from convinced the story was self-consistent, but I cannot justify that remark without spoilers. As a crime story, I found it to be fairly indifferent in the sense of the process of solving the crime, as opposed to the crimes themselves, but as a story about an alcoholic drying out, while it is somewhat grim and unpleasant, and with the caveat that I do not know enough about this to know whether what is presented is valid, this was quite intense and convincing. The grading I give is based on that, and not as a crime story.
