An Important Conversation By Kyle Phillips Bill Blankschaen’s, A Story Worth Telling, invites a conversation that Christians in America need to have.Right from the beginning Blankschaen asks a compelling question, What if you could live a story worth telling, a life of such lasting significance that the account of your life would not just be told but celebrated in places and times you cannot now imagine? (p. 1).He is careful to put that question into a quintessentially American context. A story worth telling is not the risk free, comfort filled, get-along-to-go-along frame that shapes most of our lives in the West. The story that he calls us to live is a story that comes only by “walking with extraordinary faith” in a God who is living and active and seeking to glorify himself through his people.A Story Worth Telling comes at a time when we are experiencing the church having lost its influence, its voice, in the American scene. The once presumed “Christian consensus” has crumbled in a remarkably short time. The most dramatic symbols of the collapse are seen broadly. The “Moralistic Therapeutic Deism” labeled by Christian Smith and Melinda Lundquist Denton in, Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers, reveals that the church has done a dismal job in transmitting the essential reality of true faith. The rise of the “Nones” in recent polling points to the devaluation of the label “Christian.” And of course the apparent, sudden collapse of the Christian articulation of sexuality testifies to the sea change in American culture. Many recognize the collapse and lay the blame at the feet of a church that has lost its way. Many voices are calling the church to attend to basic aspects of what it means to be Christian. David Platt’s Radical and Frances Chan’s Crazy Love and Multiply call the church to a renewed commitment and conviction. The pseudonymous Nik Ripken’s The Insanity of God portrays a vital church in the world of persecution very different from the flaccid church in our world of “have it your way” consumerism and ease.In A Story Worth Telling, Bill Blankschaen grants the issues that confront the church without spending time exploring the whys and wherefores. Rather, he focuses our attention upon the simple, yet profound, issue of faith. As Christ followers we are to be a people of faith, a people who trust God in our lives and not the familiar props the American lifestyle offers us.Blankschaen clearly expresses what the book is about and the challenge he brings. This book is intended to serve as your field guide for stepping out of your comfort zone and into the adventure of a story worth telling. So lace up your hiking boots and prepare to pack for the journey—it’s not for the faint of heart, but nothing worthwhile ever is. And just because you can live a more meaningful life doesn’t mean you will. You must consciously choose it. Existing is all about drifting downstream, going with the flow, rolling down the path of least resistance. Living a dynamic, fulfilling story promises some- thing grander, the opportunity to connect with something bigger than we can even imagine. It requires leaving the well-worn paths and off-roading through life in ways that often make little sense to those simply existing around us. (p. 5)And he delivers. As a “field guide,” he really does write to equip the self-reliant, pseudo-Christian to leave the safety of conventionality to launch into the adventure of a real world faith where you do “what you believe to be true, often in spit of what you see, sense or feel.” In doing so, he helps us understand what authentic biblical faith is, and, and how to move into that kind of existence.Christians in America need to have a frank conversation about the nature of true Christian discipleship, about what it means to follow Jesus. It begins with faith, and it continues in an exciting journey of expanding faith as we realize that God is true to his word after all.If we can figure out how truly to live through faith in the one who loved us, died for us, and now lives through us, everything will change. Bill Blankschaen’s in A Story Worth Telling begins the conversation that could lead to the kind of transformation that results in your life becoming…a story worth telling.

By Clay Sturm Once in heaven, what will we be able to do to prove our love for God that will actually require sacrifice or facing difficulty? Now is our chance to die to ourselves and show God and the rest of the world just how much we love Him and value Him above all else, but if you are anything like me (human, that is) then you are frozen with fear, doubt, and uncertainty.Bill’s new book is a perfect place to start for a wake up call to refocus our lives with an eternal perspective. Thankfully, he doesn't just inspire us to walk a life of abundant faith, and then leave us to figure the rest out by ourselves. Bill switches seamlessly from the inspirational to the practical by examining Biblical heroes of faith, as well as modern Christian role models to spell out how to best position yourself within God’s pleasing will so that He can work through you.

Bill Blankschaen has walked this pathway himself in the last few years to pursue his true calling of being an author and life coach. Little did I know that when I first met Mr. Blankschaen as my son's school principal (and a talented one at that), that a God-given calling was daring him to walk out, on faith, to unknown territory. But it was something that he simply had to do if he was going to discover the explosive growth that God was calling him to. Each chapter is carefully constructed in such a way that leads the reader to ask him or herself a specific set of questions that helps the reader to assess his/her life journey. I can't recommend this book enough. It's a page turner for readers in every stage of life.
