Surely, if we re going to find release from worry, we must find the One who is greater than us. Tim points us to him in this well-written, easily-studied book. Clyde Christensen, Quarterback Coach, Indianapolis Colts, 2002 - present Tim Lane s latest book is a classic! Dukes, President and Executive Director of the Worldwide Discipleship Association, author of Maturity Matters: The Priority and Process for Disciple Building in the Church This is a readable yet profound book, speaking biblically and personally to our struggles with worry. I recommend it to all who grapple with life in the midst of an uncertain world. Tremper Longman III, Robert H. Gundry Professor of Biblical Studies, Westmont College, Santa Barbara, California Unlike some Christian books that can actually exacerbate the problem, this brief, grace-saturated book will help give struggling Christians guidance on how to address their tendency to worry. Relying mostly on Scripture, but open to the insights of contemporary science, this is well-informed, Christ-centered pastoral wisdom at its best. Dr Eric L. Johnson, Professor of Pastoral Care, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Director of the Society for Christian Psychology Do you worry? Well, here is a book for you! Rather than give you superficial steps to stop anxiety, Tim reminds us of the big picture of God s message of hope in the middle of the what ifs of life. Dr Phillip G. Monroe, Professor of Counseling and Psychology, Biblical Theological Seminary, Pennsylvania In Living Without Worry, Tim Lane provides a unique combination of understanding and compassion for the many worries of life along with a God-focused, Christ-centered, eternal orientation. Dr Bob Kellemen, VP of Institutional Development, Crossroads Bible College, author of Anxiety: Anatomy and Cure I worry. All my attempts to stop worrying have failed pitifully in the past, leaving me even more vexed, but finally there s a book that can help break that cycle. An accessible must-read for anyone who wants to begin the journey of worrying less. --Helen Thorne, Training Manager at London City Mission, author of Purity is Possible Exploring issues from the past, in the future and in the present, Tim helps us to bring all our anxieties to the Lord Jesus. It is only when we humble ourselves before him that we are able to cast all our cares on him. Whether you are beset with worries or are seeking to befriend others who are, this is a great read. It probably will not stop you worrying, but it will give you a framework for understanding it and some strategies for dealing with it. Above all, it will bring you face to face with a crucified Savior and help you to fall in love more deeply with him. Then what will you have to worry about? Richard Underwood, Pastoral Ministries Director, The Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches We live in a worrying world - a world that is not the way God created it to be. That gives us plenty to be worried about. In this book Tim Lane walks alongside the worried and the anxious and shows us how anxiety can be replaced with the peace of God. With great pastoral concern and a sharp biblical understanding of the problem, he shows us how the scriptures speak to the worries of our hearts. I will be using this book myself and recommending it to many. Sally Orwin Lee, Member of the Executive Committee of Biblical Counseling UK With clarity and compassion, Tim Lane helps see the reality of worry in our lives and the real way out of worry in our lives. Because this book is good biblical pastoral theology, it is good biblical pastoral counseling. This timely book is to be warmly welcomed and widely read! But as most christians will soon discover, Jesus calls us not to worry about tomorrow for today has enough trouble of its own. So how can a christian live out Jesus’s word faithfully? Timothy Lane has written a book that helps to address this.First, Lane defines the term worry for the readers. He shows the readers that worrying within the bible often talks about a mind that is distracted to the point that it is overly-concern about the issue. Next, Lane takes the readers through 3 time zones where we often find ourselves worrying about — the past, the present and the future.Lane shows the readers that in Christ, our past can no longer condemn us. In the midst of our struggles with anxiety, it important to constantly find ourselves bringing our sorrows to God, bring to mind His wondrous works in redeeming us, and also to find encouragement and support within the community.Lastly, Lane gives us practical steps that we can take to help us be less anxious. This includes cultivating a heart of thanksgiving, constant self-examination and working out the issues. Lane also raises truths that helps christians think through about their anxiety, for example, Lane shows how the book of James reminds the readers that our life is short and unpredictable, and it is only when we begin that realise that the world rest on the God for whom life is neither short nor unpredictable, can we find solace. The book is filled with biblical truths that really aims to help christians deal with their anxiety, be it if you struggle with Generalised Anxiety Disorder or PTSD, Lane is able to help you do these issues biblically. I highly recommend anyone struggling with anxiety to read this book and to see how God and Christ can help you in your struggles.Rating: 4.25 / 5Disclaimer: I was given this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Constructive Counsel For Combatting Anxiety By Gary J Ware Living Without Worry (Good Book Company, 2014) by Timothy Lane is a helpful, concise, and accessible treatment about the roots of anxiety and methods of dealing with it. While recognising different degrees of anxiety and various physiological conditions that may contribute to, or arise from, extreme situations, Lane offers basic principles to try navigate the circumstances of worry in a positive manner.Identifying causes of worry that arise from past (actions done by the individual, or to the individual), the future (situations that may arise), the present (what is happening now); Lane goes on to unfold a pattern by which the individual identifies how these circumstances supplant or distort focus on God and then cultivate a perspective that expresses trust in God.Scripture is skilfully used to both provide the pattern of the counsel as well as the context for trusting it. Helpful questions practically unfold the process and an important section contextualises the process in terms of recognising that circumstances in life will provide opportunities to give in to worry and fear, but these are used by God to grow the faith of his people.Personally, as a long-standing worrier who is inclined to periods of melancholy, Lane’s analysis rings true and his counsel resonates as being a constructive pattern to dealing with the various situations in life that can easily lead to anxiety. Even as I read it for this review I found current situations causing apprehension giving way to a sense of God’s power and purpose that brings peace. The .mobi edition of Living Without Worry upon which this review is based was provided by Cross Focussed Reviews as part of a Living Without Worry blog tour. Worry and anxiety are struggles I know personally. Often times they can come on at the most inopportune time. Other times there are seasons where worry, anxiety, and depression come in like the tide and roll out with no fanfare. This is why when I read Living Without Worry How to replace Anxiety with peace by Dr. Timothy Lane I was greatly helped. Dr. Lane writes not only out of his considerable knowledge of this topic but also his many years as a biblical counselor, and professor. The first six chapters look at worry—why not worry, what is worry, worry and your past, worry and your future, and worry and your present. Chapter seven looks at how to address worry in your own life while chapter eight helps readers to counter your worry with the gospel. Chapter nine helpful looks at how to cast all your cares on the Lord. Chapter ten looks at how Jesus viewed anxiety and worry. The book concludes with a gospel call to cast our cares on Jesus, the One who cares for us.As I mentioned at the outset of this review, anxiety and worry are two issues I’m very familiar with. Life comes at us a million miles an hour. When these feelings come up in my own life rather than running away from them I run to Jesus with them. Part of being an emotional, and mentally healthy Christian is to take what we know in the Bible and apply it to our lives. When I feel feelings of worry and anxiety rather than dwelling on them I take seriously what Jesus says in Matthew 11:28-30 and what Paul teaches in Phillippians 4:6-8. The invitation of Jesus is to come to His throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16). This means that rather than dwelling on all my problems which only breeds more anxiety and worry, I take them to Jesus the One who is our High Priest and Intercessor. After all, Jesus knows and cares. His invitation in Matthew 11:28-30 is for rest from our burdens. We can cast our burdens on Jesus because He serves as our High Priest and Intercessor. All of this is a biblical way of taking what we know from God’s Word and applying it to our lives.Whether you are having intense of not so intense seasons of anxiety, worry, and depression you need godly friends around you to listen and care for you. This is one reason the New Testament teaches us to one another each other. Living in community, under qualified godly pastors and elders is also important. Being open and transparent with those you trust in your local church is also vital. After all, they can pray with you and encourage you. They can see, how you communicate your words and wrap an arm around you and care for you. They can remind you of the truth of the gospel. I’ve found all of this to be vital in fighting off anxiety, worry, and depression.Yet, sometimes I’ve noticed in counseling other Christians is that we are so focused on earthly circumstances that we can’t listen. Our ears are stopped to hear what others are saying. Sometimes that is because of our pride. Most of the time though in my experience it is because we’re so focused on earthly things that we cannot fill our minds with heaven. In this case rather than filling our minds with God’s Word which is living and active and able to help lift us up out of our depression, anxiety, and worry—we instead choose to focus only on our problems. In this case, we’re choosing to be so focused on earthly things that we cannot be used for heaven. God wants us to fill our thoughts with heaven so that we’ll be of earthly good. This is what Living Without Worry does so well. It points us to God’s Word. It provides the means of the gospel as the only help for worry and anxiety. Sure, we may also need medication in some extreme cases for chemical imbalance. We are to look up to Jesus. He is what we need more than anything else. Jesus is our peace. He is our treasure. We are to trust Him who knows what is best for us and know that He will see us through. These aren’t just words. We are to truly believe these truths and to do battle as God’s soldiers since He’s given us His Spirit.I highly recommend this book. Whether you are struggling with anxiety or worry this book will help you by pointing you to your greatest need in Jesus Christ. Jesus does care for you. He loves you. Read this book and be encouraged, and stirred up once again by way of reminder of the precious truth that Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you.
