About the Author Sam A. Andreades is senior pastor of Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church in Quarryville, Pennsylvania. Previously, he was pastor for more than ten years in Greenwich Village, New York City, and is the founder of Higher Ground (originally called G.A.M.E. [Gender Affirming Ministry Endeavor]), a New York City ministry of Christian discipleship serving those with unwanted same-sex attractions. His wrote his dissertation (D.Min., Covenant Theological Seminary) on gender distinction in marriage. He has been married to his wife for twenty five years and has three sons and one daughter.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. enLightenment from enGendered By Oregon Coaster One of the most winsomely-phrased and gently delivered messages on "gender theology" from a complementarian stance I have ever read. In fact, I don't think I've ever read any book on gender from a Christian point of view that I would call "theology", other than enGendered. For me, it completely demystified difficult passages in Scripture (e.g., the directives on "headcovering" in 1 Cor. 11) that I had long found thorny and/or puzzling. And all in straightforward language, with plenty of Scripturally-based first principles for foundation and real life examples for illustrations. Andreades quotes scholarly work and research, but not in a stuffy or off-putting manner; very accessible to the lay reader. I mentioned his "complementarian" approach, but it is what I would label a "softened" one. The description of gender roles in close relationships is very carefully stripped of trigger language, and recast in terms that are much broader, making their application across culture lines much greater. This is the best book to put into the hands of an eager Christian who wants to know, "How can I take the 1st century terms found in Scripture and apply them to my life as a gendered individual in the 21st century?" (Sorry for the awkward phrasing -- it has gotten so difficult to find the right vocabulary for masculine and feminine terms in the past few years!) Read enGendered and prepare to be enLightened.

Baxter I have given a 4 star review because this book is rather complex for popular consumption Christian or otherwise. The author views gender as God given roles in which a man "consistently lays down his life for the close women in his life....by taking charge, securing them and valuing relationship with them." Women "consistently with joy advances the life of her man and provides him rest." One could argue that this kind of valuing goes beyond gender. Andreades nicely argues that this kind of valuing grows out of gender. This material is rich and it does not bend to cultural stereotypes about gender. This is one of the best Christian books I have read on the subject and yet it will be "too intellectual" for some; while is "too spiritual" for others. I highly recommend this to any one who wants to have a deep understanding of the power of gender to shape our lives.

I get a little grumpy talking about "gender roles " and such, so I didn't really want to read this. While processing through a lot of questions personally as a newlywed, friend of members of the LGBT community, and in light of recent events, this book is gently but firmly helping me think biblically and theologically through some tough stuff. The idea of asymmetricality... If that's a word... Is really helpful. Learning about God, people, and myself through Andreades' words.
