Review This is an excellent book. The authors cover a variety of areas, putting Jesus as a person in his historical context and his teachings in their religious context. We see that Jesus’s life was that of a first century C.E. Judean rabbi, and that his teachings were firmly based in the Torah. It was only later writers, from Paul onwards that distorted his teachings and inserted anti-Jewish sentiments and interpretations into his teachings. Jesus can be understood as a rabbi engaging in the Jewish tradition of self-critical exploration to improve the Temple. Many other rabbis in the centuries before and after did the same thing, and during Jesus’s lifetime were in the process of changing Judaism from being Temple based to being synagogue based. Jesus was a part of that development and must be understood in that context. Especially useful was the authors’ use of comparable texts from Christian and Jewish texts. I also found interesting the explanations of certain words especially when multiple meanings are present in the original word but a single specific word is used in translation. That may be because I’m a philophile (I love words). This is a useful book for Jews, Christians and everyone else interested in interfaith understanding, and should reduce the sum total of ignorance in the world just a little bit. —Rosemarie CawkwellIn Jesus: First Century Rabbi, twenty-first century Rabbi David Zaslow makes a thoughtful and challenging contribution to Jewish-Christian dialogue. By Melinda Ribner This book skillfully reveals the Jewish roots of Jesus, but it also reveals little known teachings within Judaism that have served as a springboard for the formation of many of the tenets within Christianity. The book is scholarly, persuasive and important to both Jews and Christians who seek to build bridges with each other without sacrificing the integrity of one's one faith. I would hope that this book would be widely read by both Christians and Jews, studied in universities, in churches and synagogues.In this time of rising anti-semitism and anti-zionism, it is so important that Christians more fully understand and appreciate the Jewish roots of their faith. In this time when Christians are being massacred and butchered in the Middle East for their faith, like Jews have been in the past, the bonds between Christians and Jews must be strengthened. We Jews know that we would have been the first to be murdered by ISIS if we were still living in these countries. This book is an answer to this call of strengthening the bonds between Christians and Jews. Thank you Reb David for this important book.

Opened My Eyes About the Power of Perspective When Studying Jesus In Relation to Judaism By Charles Franklin This book really opened my eyes to the power of perspective when dealing with Jesus. As a Christian, I was taught "Replacement Theology", but always had questions about it. I was also taught that Jesus dispensed with the old system and created Christianity. I have (thankfully) moved on from those beliefs, but I didn't really have a deep understanding of Jesus within Judaism. This book answered that for me and serves as continuing education for me on the dynamic personality and teachings of Jesus. (Other books include "Messianic Judaism" by David Stern).This book, in particular, added a key piece of understanding about the implications of "Replacement Theology" and Gentile "superiority". It has serious implications that have been used to justify horrible crimes! By understanding and thinking through where those beliefs come from, we can (in my belief) come to a closer view of what the Gospel actually instructs to do, instead of what we instruct it to do.

Jay This isn’t an academic book but is aimed at the general reader.It’s not just about Jesus but is a collection of responses to different observations made by Christians about Judaism.Instead of emphasizing the differences between the two religions, the author explains how the concepts of vicarious atonement, mediation, incarnation, and Trinity are actually rooted in classical Judaism. Rabbi Zaslow dispels the myths of disparity between Christianity and Judaism without diluting the unique features of each faith.He calls the Hebrew Scriptures the “Elder Testament” and the Apostolic Scriptures the “Younger Testament.” He recognizes Jesus as the faithful, Torah observant Jewish rabbi he was, and accepts him as the “Christian Messiah,” if not the Messiah of Judaism. He says that the beliefs and practices of Jesus fall very near that of the Pharisees and he gives loads of examples.However, he doesn’t understand Paul and needs to read some of the modern scholarship of the likes of Sanders and Wright.That being said, he has gone considerably more in the direction of understanding Christians than most Christians have regarding Jews.
