About the Author David Wilkie is the artist behind the popular online comic strip Coffee with Jesus. He and his wife Katie cofounded Radio Free Babylon, a media creation consortium that produces literature, music, software, web sites and less tangible ideas about life. Dave has held numerous and varied positions in his career, including writer, creative director, producer, musician, on-air talent, clergyman, fax repairman and artist, sometimes all at once.

By Alan Z If you like “Coffee with Jesus,” a Web comic strip at http://radiofreebabylon.com/Comics/CoffeeWithJesus.php, you’ll love this collection of top strips. The book is excellent — almost as good as the first book by David Wilkie.Although I’m not a Christian, I find that these comics contain a lot of truth. A small group of people, including a vain middle-aged woman, a landscape company owner, a weary priest, and Satan, chat with Jesus, sharing their problems, their opinions, their biases and their humanity. Jesus responds, sometimes with profound wisdom, and sometimes with a pithy one-liner that is nothing more than, well, a pithy one-liner.The strips are great. The collection is great. If you enjoyed the first volume, you’ll enjoy the second. However, here’s why I’m only giving it four stars instead of five:The biggest criticism: There’s no change, there’s no evolution. Nothing is new. We have the same cast of characters, making the same sorts of conversation with Jesus, and he is giving essentially the same types of responses. It's time for new characters to enter the strip. Some teens or 20-somethings. Some seniors. Some who aren’t white. I’d love to see their conversations with Jesus.As far as I can tell, the most recent new character was Joe the Priest, and he entered a long time ago. C’mon, Mr. Wilkie, let’s freshen things up!A more minor gripe: The first book had additional material, like back stories about the characters, little poems, and other prose to break up the comics. There wasn't a lot of that extra content, but it was excellent, and I'd been looking forward to more of those pages. Alas, they’re not here: Volume 2 is 100% comic strips, with no interruption.I thoroughly enjoyed this book… but not as much as the first one. Please surprise me in Volume 3, Mr. Wilkie!

And you'll hear the whispers of a loving Savior that you wish you could have heard then.You'll wish you could have Coffee With Jesus like these folks.Then you'll realize - you can. Score!

A gentle roast with bolder flavor By Arthur Digbee If you know this comic strip from social media or from the first volume, you already know that you want to buy this. This sequel delivers the same wisdom and gentle humor as the first.If you don’t know it, “Coffee with Jesus” features characters who talk with Jesus over coffee. Obviously, this is a way of portraying prayer as an ongoing conversation. Many strips will speak to part of your life, and others will help you empathize with others. Almost always with a smile.Artistically, this is the simplest comic you’ll ever see – with one exception, each character has only one pose, seen at two distances. A smile will occasionally become a closed mouth. Jesus almost always appears in the second and fourth panel, and one character in the other two. That’s it. It’s remarkably effective.Wilkie’s Jesus is a counselor with a sense of humor and not a little irony. At the same time, he does assert his prerogatives as God, and he’s not above trash talking with Satan. This volume has more trash-talking than the first. It also gives a larger role to Kevin, an atheist who works as a consultant to mega-churches, and to Pastor Joe, whose small congregation is an embarrassment to Joe but a pleasure to Jesus. As a result, this volume is much more critical of mega-churches than the previous one.Wilkie comes from an evangelical background that clearly stamps the kinds of Christianity he knows. Catholics, African Methodist Episcopalians and mainstream Protestants will recognize their neighbors here, but not their own churches. When Wilkie talks politics, it’s clear that his characters are G. W. Bush evangelicals. Wilkie is more “inclusive” in his politics, but that really means that he would rather get partisan politics out of the church entirely.Still - whatever your church, whatever your politics, you’ll find something here.
