Siegel's "A Dog for Leo" is the story of a boy who really wants a dog but has to show his parents he's responsible enough to take care of it. After a setback early in the book, Leo (with a little help from his best friend Marty) does his best to prove he can handle having a dog. The question is does Leo get a dog? You have to read the book to find out! Well written by Siegel, "A Dog for Leo" is age appropriate and a delightful read for fourth graders and up, especially those who are thinking of getting a pet. --Ashley McGrath
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Awesome Read Aloud! By TeacheRiv I just finished reading A Dog for Leo to my fourth-grade students and they absolutely loved it! It's a sweet story about a boy who wants a dog more than anything, but he needs to prove to his parents that he is responsible enough to have one. The author uses descriptive language and strong dialogue to portray the special friendship between a child and a dog, while making a point about showing responsibility. The students could relate to the situation and to the main character, who was authentic and credible. We have had many class discussions about good writing so I asked my students to give me examples of this in A Dog for Leo. Here are some of their responses. , "The author helped us to paint a mental picture," "When you read it, you can play the movie in your head." You can make personal connections to the story and the characters," it's a fun story but it teaches a lesson too," One student tasked me if I would call his parents and tell them how responsible and trustworthy he was if from now on he never forgot his homework and kept up with his daily reading log. The first book he would list in that log would be A Dog for Leo, of course!
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. disappointment and best of all parental love By Amazon Customer This is going to be the most honest review you will read on this site because I am Uncle Martin (Marty in the book), so you don't have to read any others. First of all, Congratulations Kandi, I didn't think you had it in you. I've just gotten around to reading the book because of some surgery that left me unable to read with a clear head.The book reads very well and the story moves right along. It has many lessons to teach.....friendship, responsibility, disappointment and best of all parental love.I would surely buy this book for my grandchildren if they were younger and I could get them to sit down for more than 5 minutes. The only criticism I can find with the book is Kandi's age group that she feels this is suited for 8-12. I honestly believe that with some parental help she could lower the age to 6. Best of luck with the book Kandi!!!
