After numerous breakups and reconciliations, Nina abandons Werner and settles in America, leaving Marlena behind when she is only 5. Now without a wife, Werner makes Marlena his "SS Princess". The price Marlena pays for the privileges this entails is emotional, physical, and sexual abuse by Werner the whole time she is growing up. In her teen years, Marlena becomes a heroin addict to numb her pain. Werner dies when she is in her early 20's, leaving her with an estate worth a few million dollars. Together with her lover, Fabio (who is also an addict, and the father of their two sons), Marlena burns through all of the money in under 3 years. Her mother, Nina, then gets legal custody of both of Marlena's sons, and takes them to America. Utterly broken and still addicted to heroin, Marlena follows her mother to America — with only an 8th grade education, and without hope for the future. In spite of enormous struggles in her financial and personal life, through hard work and a lot of therapy Marlena slowly overcomes the damage done by her upbringing. And yet, through it all, Marlena continues to love her father deeply and, psychologically, has never stopped searching for him. I can easily see this book winning all the important awards! I like the fact that the book was assembled through phone conversations and put on paper by the co-author. If this is the result, then more books should be written by dictation. As soon as the hounds of publishing discover this jewel, it will be in book stores everywhere.

Catelli has done a masterful job assembli By tom levis Guy Catelli should receive an award simply for bringing this book to print. It is the diary of an abused and self abusing daughter of a Nazi SS officer, who would not allow Catelli to change any word; therefore, he became a stenographer...and, in turn, was abused by Marlena. She is so self centered that it is difficult to sympathize with her, and she apparently, feels so threatened by her public, that all of the photographs in the book have the faces blacked out. Because it is a diary, the reader has to fill in the blanks. I had no clear image of Marlena; therefore I became a detached observer...a peeping Tom...waiting for the next misfortune.On the other hand it is an intriguing tale. All the men in her life, damaged her, and I wonder if she can survive outside an abusive relationship... her life as an escort will be revealed in the follow up volume. Her self worth must be at such a low level that she feels she deserves nothing better.Catelli has done a masterful job assembling and making sense of the material. Just as in his earlier study, Behind Lesbia's Door..., he fearlessly courts difficult women and survives.I am awaiting Catelli's next prize winner...The Writing of SS Daughter

Wood A lot has been written about the SS, about the high level war criminals who escaped, about the holocaust, the survivors and their children, and how the German people dealt with and didn't deal with the legacy of the Third Reich post WWII -- but this book addresses a gap in the historical record. What happened to those SS members of lower rank who escaped, not to South America, but who blended in with the populace in Europe? And more especially, what was it like to grow up with such a father? Here we have one such story, beautifully and meticulously written, showing how "the sins of the father are visited upon his children." We don't pick our parents. Marlena certainly didn't choose to have a father who was a war criminal. But she paid the price anyway. Gaetano Catelli has done a masterful job bringing this part of Marlena's story out of the shadows. I eagerly await what still must be in the offing: The rest of Marlena's journey, how she found her way out of these dark byways to become a psychotherapist helping others who are lost, confused and damaged to find that ray of guiding light we all need.
