Grace, a model post WWII housewife, managed her five children and assorted pets with a hyper-observant eye for perfection. Decades later she suffers a debilitating stroke. In this heart-breaking yet spirit-mending memoir, Collamer contrasts the nostalgia of 1960s preteen life with an unstable future after the stroke. When daughter becomes caregiver, advocate, and friend, the process of growing up begins.

The desire to be there - to help, to love... to be loved... to seek, attain approval. I cried. I laughed... I will be rereading this book for years and recommending it to every woman I know (guys, I think you just might 'get' this book too!).

Collamer A well-written, honest and sometimes funny book, sometimes bringing tears and sometimes laughter. It brought back a few memories also. Makes us think about how life can change in the blink of an eye and gives the reader an insight into how to handle those challenges. Mrs. Collamer is a very talented writer who writes it like it is. I enjoyed this book.

It explores many of the thoughts and feelings daughters have about the complicated relationship with their mother. You follow the search for Patty's independence, the mystery of her mothers life before her and her and the impact that her mothers words and traditions have on her life. It follows the physical decline of her ultimate mentor and coach. I feel all daughters can relate to Patty's struggles navigating this relationship and guilt that she carries with her, constantly trying to meet the expectations of a good daughter.
