Starving and certain that I would die in my dingy jail cell in Spain, I made a deal with God. I fell to my knees, promising to give up all drugs and criminal activities. I prayed out loud, witnessed only by the urine-soaked walls and huge rats that shared my cage. My desperation was raw and naked. I thought about the Countess. I thought about my parents at home on Long Island. But mostly I thought about myself. “Save me, God, and I will live virtuously and honor my family.” I was released early and found myself back home, penniless and living in my parents’ basement. God had kept his promise. I soon broke mine...Without A Net is an autobiographical road trip through a volatile period of American history. Barry Hornig was a seeker and an explorer. His adventures were splendid and sordid, and the sort of stuff that would teach anyone a lesson. This is the story of how he learned his lessons the hard way.

About the Author Michael Claibourne graduated from Oberlin College with a BA in English Literature in 1990. After studying Japanese for several years in Tokyo, he worked in software development for a while in Los Angeles, first at Disney Interactive and then at DreamWorks Feature Animation. Finding writing far more rewarding than the world of software engineering, he has switched to writing full time. (Michael Claibourne)Barry Hornig attended Boston University and graduated from Emerson College with a BA in 1963, after which he took part in Tim Leary’s LSD experiments at Harvard. A native of New York City, he has been able to combine his love of travel with his knowledge of Central Asian textiles and kilims, and he has traveled extensively through Afghanistan, pre-Taliban Pakistan, Spain, Morocco, and South America. He was a real estate broker in New York City, then started a rug factory in the ancient city of Balkh, Afghanistan in the 1970s. An international collector of textiles and an authority on weavings and carpets from Central Asia and Europe, Barry currently divides his time between Santa Monica, California and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He has worked with top interior designers and has considerable clientele in the entertainment sector. A professional sports fisherman who is very concerned about our oceans, Barry is also obsessed with the paranormal―especially clairvoyance, mysticism, Sedona and UFOs. He has talked with Space People, had visions in Masar-i-Sharif, been blessed by Muktananda and hugged by Ammachi. (Barry Hornig)

Skating on thin ice through the high-flying world of copiousamounts of drugs of all variety, glamourous women, prostitutes, blackmailers, time in a Mexican jail, the mob, and a strange group of wierdos including drunks,million-dollar drunks including top-rated gamblers, Hefner's Mansion, All-nighters and more .Much time spent in the 70's at Studio 54 in New York where he hung out with top celebrities and movie stars Fascinating and sometimes very scary tales of his days in Pakiston and Afghanision where his skill led him to become an expert on incredible and expensive rugs from that area. When he finally begins to try to straighten out his life, he meets and falls in love with the famous New York Model and PlayboyPlaymate Diana Wilson, who shared his unending curiosity for truth, mysticism, obscure religions and a wonderful curiosity about everything. Not to give away what's in the book, but it's phenomenally fun to read as you can never even think of what he'll be up to next.I really enjoyed it.

The adventures intertwine and pile on each other in a rollicking decades long journey of darkness and light.Claiborne converts these sordid adventures in to an extremely readable book and certainly takes the reader on a no hold barred experience. Like an intelligent Forrest Gump on whatever drug was big at the time, Hornig seems to walk through all the happenings of the underbelly of American culture since the 1950's to the present. From the Flamingo Kid to hippy real estate broker to the pimps and prostitutes of New york, Studio 54, Afghanistan, prison, Indian Gurus, Morocco, and Santa Fe, this guy has seen and done it all. And he seems to hold nothing back; he tells us the shocking truth about all of it.I have a sneaking suspicion many colorful stories will flow from this seed pod of adventures.

Once I started the book I couldn't put it down, and finished it within two days. Some parts of it made me cringe, cry and sigh. It was like a complete journey with Barry, the co-author and subject, through the crazy times and phases of his life. I particularly enjoyed the chapter where Barry meets his soulmate, Diana (aka Playmate Reagan Wilson). Definitely recommend this book to people who enjoy adventure/travel stories with excitement and insight.
