About the Author Margaret Mead (1901-1978) was associated with the American Museum of Natural History in New York for over fifty years, becoming curator of ethnology in 1964. She taught at Columbia University and the New School for Social Research as well as many other universities throughout her lifetime. Some of her books include Culture and Commitment, Continuities in Cultural Evolution, andThe Mountain Arapesh.

It's somewhat misleadingly titled, as it's about villagers in a smaller island off the coast of the main island of New Guinea. But their lifestyle has many similarities with the Sepik peoples on the main island. Indeed, on a recent visit to the Sepik, I encountered the hazardously weak floors in the stilt-houses exactly as she described eighty years ago.Mead has a very didactic and, worse, declarative way of writing. She describes behaviors in definitive and absolute terms, rarely allowing that there may be a range of behaviors between individuals, families, and villages. But the depth and detail of her study of the culture is remarkable.
