The underlying message is that a disability doesn't have to be about limitations, but rather opportunities. Well written and well illustrated, I highly recommend this gentle, encouraging book!

Essential Eclectic Children's Novel for Literature Enrichment By christina rimmer As a former Behavior Therapist and Early Childhood Educator I find this book to be an excellent choice for those working within the fields of education, and/or therapy; or those that have children or adolescents with neurological/developmental challenges. Reviewing this book as an Early Childhood Educator, I think it’s an exceptional read for beginners (K through 2nd) and would make an excellent addition to any classroom and or child’s own book collection!I’ve received the book in new condition with speedy delivery at no additional cost. The book itself is in pliable condition (paperback) for young hands to easily explore and read. I give it an A+.

While it is the purpose of this little book to emphasize the importance of vocal culture in its relations to literary and general culture, it is not its purpose, except incidentally, to impart elocutionary instruction. Attention is called to a few features of the subject, which, if realized in any voice, would contribute much to the technical part, at least, of good reading.

That British mysteries from the Golden Age of detective fiction (customarily defined as the period between the First and Second World Wars) were not only aesthetically but ideologically conservative has long been a commonplace of mystery genre criticism. In The Spectrum of English Murder, Curtis Evans challenges this view by looking at the detective fiction of Henry Lancelot Aubrey-Fletcher and G. D. H. and Margaret Cole, a trio of popular British crime writers from the Golden Age. Although Aubrey-Fletcher, a Great War veteran and member of his country's traditional gentry elite, and the Coles, prominent socialist intellectuals, wrote about fictional murder from polar points of the political spectrum, the detective fiction of all three authors is alike in that it often defies conventional expectations of between-the-wars British mystery writing. Aubrey-Fletcher's detective fiction, published between 1926 and 1957 under the pseudonym "Henry Wade," offers searching and sometimes searing criticism of myriad aspects of English society. A pioneer of both the police procedural and the crime novel, Aubrey-Fletcher was an important figure in the movement to transform the classical tale of detection. As a sideline from their serious writing on politics and economics, the Coles between 1923 and 1946 produced a significant body of detective fiction, much of it mocking cherished conservative values. Although less formally innovative in their mystery writing than Aubrey-Fletcher, the husband and wife were exceptional within the genre at this time for their employment of leftist-tinged satire and farce. The Spectrum of English Murder offers both fans and scholars of Golden Age detective fiction an entertaining and illuminating analysis of the works of three of the period's most interesting crime writers, all of whom merit modern-day revival.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inform and Entertain By Anthony W. Donley Curt Evans is a scholar focusing on mystery authors and the genre. His latest work complements his last work and gives an in-depth look at the Coles who were interesting and influential British mystery authors and Aubrey-Fletcher who was better known as Henry Wade. Evans has an engaging, personable style that informs without being pedantic.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A great complement to Masters of the Hundrum Mysteries! By Enrique F. Bird A couple of years ago i wrote the following Amazon review for this book's predecessor:"Mr. Evans has written a thorough study of 3 of the principal writers of a group which Julian Symons, a noted writer and critic himself, derisevely called "humdrums". Taking the bull by the horns, the author manages to transform the insult implied in the term humdrum into a positive adjective.Mr. Evans first gives a background to the era these writers belonged to and why and where Symons was so negative about them. He then successfully, at least for me, unmasks the superficiality of the critic's contempt for humdrum writing, all the time giving us lots of information and commentary of English detective fiction between the 2 world wars. This he does in an easy to understand, likable, and at the same time scholarly style that betrays his thorough knowledge of the subject he writes on.He then proceeds, in the same vein, to write in detail on 3 of the main humdrum writers: John Rhode (who is also Miles Burton), Freeman Wills Crofts, and JJ Connington. For each of them he provides biographical information, writing history, and description and criticism of a considerable amount of their mysteries, including not only their best known but many of the others. These 3 chapters are the heart of the book.At the end, he provides with the thoroughness we have now come to expect extensive bibliographical information for each of the 3 writers.Troughout the book, there is an abundance of graphic material consisting mainly of photos, cover reproductions, and maps/diagrams from the books themselves. This is a must read book for anyone who likes the classic detective novel/story, especially of the Golden Age between World War I and World War II. Also, from now on, this should be on the bookshelf of anyone writing about the history of the mystery/detective field. Mr. Evans has additional unpublished material on several other of the humdrum writers and I personally hope they will see print in the not too distant future."Good news - this is the"remainder' of his major work, and it is up to the high standard set by its companion volume. This time he deals with 2 other authors: Henry Wade and G.D.H. & Margaret Cole. It is great to see a major neglected writer as in my opinion Wade was being so thoroughly discussed. And although the Coles are of the five different writers discussed by Evans in the 2 books the ones I do not like much or rate highly, it is a matter of personal taste - what Evans writes about them and their books is much welcome material.Dear Curtis Evans, please do not stop here!

Within four pages I wanted to smack Meena, but also hug her and try to guide her to better choices. The growth of the relationship between Meena and Mama Kakes is so tangible it will make your heart ache. At times I was literally speed reading to get to the revelation--somebody has a twin! Someone dies! Somebody gets married!--and I am waiting for part 2 if there is one. If not, this leaves closure...no abrupt cliffhanger. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed because I'd love to see more of Meena AND Mama Kakes...

Few, if any, authors of science fiction writing since the publication of A PRINCESS OF MARS can say that they were not influenced, to a greater or lesser degree, by the pulp adventure and science-fiction storyteller, Edgar Rice Burroughs. A seminal work, that 1912 novel started the ever popular Planetary Romance genre and the first ever science-fiction series, running for ten books between 1912 and 1948. Burroughs also created Tarzan of the Apes, perhaps the first action hero in mainstream literature and certainly the first in the movies. His popularity with the general public was assured with the 1914 hard cover publication of his first Tarzan novel. However, only since the 1980s have critics in journalism and academia began to recognize the impact of his work on fantastic literature in general. Today his literary future and reputation are secure. The contributors to this anthology include critics, scholars and fans of this most popular of all pulp storytellers: Patrick H. Adkins, David Critchfield, J. G. Huckenpöhler, Charles A. Madison, John Flint Roy, Suzannah Rowntree, Abraham Sherman, Den Valdron, John C. Wright, and Robert B. Zeuschner. Together their essays and articles survey the impact and influence of American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs on science fiction writing and film, and in the process affirm both his reputation and his continued popularity with collectors and the general reading public.

Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Master of Pulp Storytelling, by Charles A. Madison

About the Author A retired professional soldier, who became a high-school teacher (English, Film, Philosophy, Economics and History), Charles A. Madison is an omnivorous reader of all types of fiction and non-fiction. However, as a scholar and researcher he is interested in the collecting of, and the scholarship associated with, the books written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the acknowledged king of the pulps and the writer who kick-started modern science fiction. This anthology is his first book dedicated to that author. He began reading and studying the scholarship associated with Burroughs as a teenager and remains to this day an unrepentant enthusiast for these great novels of adventure and romance. He and his wife Pam live in Killeen, Texas, enjoying the temperate climate and friendly, hospitable people of this great state.

An interesting look at some of the tropes we all know and love; the planetary romance, the lost world(s), and so forth. What pushed it to "4 star" was John C. Wright's review of John Carter (the movie). YES! At last. Someone who understands. It's NOT a bad movie, nor is it a bad story, per se, but it's NOT A Princess of Mars.Another article I found interesting and somewhat humorous was the examination of ERB's use of the 'framing' technique, wherein he was not the protagonist, but was taking down the story FROM the protagonist, or from an eyewitness. Apparently 'Framing' ERB was quite the long-lived chap (but what can one expect when one is descended from Captain John Carter, late of the Army of Virginia).

A Wonderfully Crafted Collection of Articles By JIM GERLACH As a life-long Burroughs fan, I was intrigued by the title, EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS: The Master of Pulp Storytelling. I knew that almost all of Burroughs' stories originally appeared in pulp magazines, but I'd never thought of him as primarily a pulp writer. But the editor and essays in this book delightfully expound on Burroughs gift to tell stories that create worlds of fantastic adventure - the heart of pulp storytelling. Charlie Madison does a wonderful job in selecting and weaving together this wonderful collection of essays using what he calls "asides." These wonderful anecdotes and musings serve as transitions between articles. I found them to be entertaining and full of wit and wisdom. I especially enjoyed Madison’s previously unpublished article on the post-war drama between ERB book publishers. The articles by David Critchfield are fascinating and the choice of John Flint Roy’s chapter from A Guide to Barsoom was a great way to end the book. This is a wonderful book full of warmth and devotion for Mr. Burroughs, but with enough surprises to keep the reader fully engaged.

It's fun reading even if I don't agree with all the articles. Great for someone who hasn't studied ERB and it even has surprises for someone like me who has read a lot. Normally, you would have to read a lot of books and magazines to have had this information at your fingertips. From here, you should have a good idea of what you want to study next.
