A practical guide to the magical history, customs, and practices of pre-Christian Northern Europe • Details the everyday magic of the Northern Tradition, including household magic, protection spells, and the significance of the days of the week • Explores direct natural magic, such as shapeshifting and soul travel, and talismanic or sigil magic, including runes and rituals to unlock the power of crafted objects • Explains how many of these customs continue to the present day In the pre-Christian societies of Northern Europe, magic was embedded in the practical skills of everyday life. Everything in Nature was ensouled with an inner spirit, as was anything made by hand. People believed in magic because it worked and because it was part of the functionality of their day-to-day lives. Many of these practical observances and customs continue to the present day as rural traditions, folk customs, household magic, and celebrations of the high and holy days of the calendar. Exploring the magical pagan traditions of the people now called Celtic, Germanic, Scandinavian, Slavonic, and Baltic, Nigel Pennick examines the underlying principle of the Northern Tradition--the concept of Wyrd--and how it empowers the arts of operative magic, such as direct natural magic and talismanic or sigil magic. Through direct natural magic, individuals can shape shift, journey out of the body, or send one of their three souls (fylgia or “fetch”) ahead of them. Sigil magic involves the powers contained in objects, which can be channeled after the appropriate ritual. Runes are the most powerful sigils in the Northern Tradition and were used to ward off illness, danger, hostile magic, and malevolent spirits. Emphasizing the importance of the cycles of Nature to the tradition, Pennick explores the eightfold sun dials and the four ways the solar year is defined. He looks at the days of the week and their symbolic association with different deities as well as why particular acts are performed on certain days and what the customary lucky and unlucky days are. He also examines sacred spaces, household magic, protection spells, and the role of music in the Northern Tradition. Explaining all the traditional holidays and activities necessary to honor them, Pennick shows how anyone can participate authentically in the magic of the Northern Tradition if they take care to do things properly, with respect, and on the right day.

Pagan Magic of the Northern Tradition: Customs, Rites, and Ceremonies, by Nigel Pennick

Review “Nigel Pennick’s Pagan Magic of the Northern Tradition is a treasure trove of ancient folklore of magical rituals and charms for the protection of people and homes, of barns and livestock, of temples and churches, for good luck and healing as well as causing harm when the rituals are not followed. It describes daily ritual activities of the people of these Pagan times and how they experienced the dangers and evil spirits of the world they lived in. Some of the magical rituals were quite bizarre while others may be of value for living in today’s world. Pennick compares the customs and rituals of a wide range of cultures across Europe and beyond, as well as across time, tracing their origins, similarities, and differences. The book is well researched, well organized, and a valuable and impressive resource for understanding the spiritual journeying of our ancestors.” (Nicholas E. Brink, Ph.D., author of Baldr’s Magic:The Power of Norse Shamanism and Ecstatic Tr)“Whether we call it magic or folklore (or even superstition), the traditional, often pre-Christian knowledge described in Pagan Magic of the Northern Tradition is fascinating. I’ve been referring to Pennick’s books for years when I need a fact or an example of some interesting early magic to cite in my books and blogs. I learned something new on every page!” (Barbara Ardinger, Ph.D., author of Pagan Every Day and Secret Lives)“Magic was a part of everyday life for our Pagan ancestors, a spiritual approach to the environment used by everyone and embedded in all the practical skills of living, from farming and building to music and healing. Nigel Pennick shows us that it is a tradition that still flourishes and rewards us in the modern world.” (Anna Franklin, author of The Sacred Circle Tarot, Pagan Ritual, and Hearth Witch)“Nigel Pennick’s book offers a well-documented overview of everyday magic, the last recourse against all evils. It introduces us to a strange Pagan world haunted by spirits and supernatural owners of nature and rehabilitates the studies of magic as an important part of our common cultural heritage. Pennick’s book is well worth a read!” (Claude Lecouteux, professor emeritus at the Sorbonne and author of The Tradition of Household Spirit)

About the Author Nigel Pennick has traveled and lectured extensively in Europe and the United States on sacred geometry, the spirit of place, spiritual arts and crafts, and labyrinths. He is the author and illustrator of more than 50 books, including The Pagan Book of Days and The Book of Primal Signs. He lives in Cambridge, England.

Chapter 11 The Craft and Magic of Buildings Other Apotropaic Devices It is a widespread folk belief that mirrors reflect not only visible light but also intangible spirits and energies. All over Europe are traditions of straight spirit-paths along which, at certain times, travel dangerous inhabitants of the otherworld. Like light, spirits travel in straight lines, and unless something is done to stop them they will enter dwellings whose entrances (windows and doors) are approached by lines-of-sight. To prevent this happening, various techniques are employed by those whose expertise it is to remedy bad places and ward off harm. Mirrors, often in the form of silvered glass balls, are placed at strategic points to reflect the perceived intrusion. Witch balls are lustrous blown-glass spheres around a foot (304.8 mm) in diameter, usually blue or green but also of silvered clear glass. Their reflective quality comes from silvering the inside glass sphere with a metallic mercury mixture, the traditional way of making mirrors. To prevent evil spirits entering the house, witch balls are hung in a window or in the window above the door in houses without leaded glass. In recent years, with a renewed interest in Chinese feng-shui, octagonal ba gua geomantic mirrors have in some cases taken the place of witch balls, having the same apotropaic function (e.g., Lip, 1979, 109--13). But mirrors and other reflective devices have one weak point. During thunderstorms they are believed to attract lightning, which was viewed in the past as a material thunderbolt. In Britain wall anchors in the form of an S were believed to ward off lightning from a building. In Normandy houseleeks were planted on the roof ridges of farmhouses for the same purpose. An eastern English way to try to keep lightning away from one’s dwelling is to bury a toad in the middle of the garden, with others at the four corners. This is quincunx magic, covering an area by treating the four corners and the center. Bay trees planted around the garden, the skin of a seal, and eagle feathers are also anti-lightning charms (Jobson 1966, 112). The Pentagram The pentagram is an ancient apotropaic sign. It is also called “pantacle,” “pentangle,” “pentagramma,” “Solomon’s Seal,” “Drudenfus,” and the “rempham.” It is known from Lombardic and Alamannic sources before the year 700. Medieval and later folk magic gives the pentagram protective power over thresholds. Goethe, in his Faust, makes the demon Mephistopheles gain access to Dr Faustus’s house because the Drudenfuss was drawn inaccurately upon the threshold. A traditional English counting song known as “The Twelve Apostles” tells “Five for the symbol at your door,” which was interpreted by folk-song collectors Broadwood and Maitland as the threshold pentagram (Broadwood & Maitland, 1893, 154-59). The pentagram has an important place in sacred geometry because the fivefold division of the circle is the starting point for the Golden Section ratio. Before the nineteenth century it was not considered significant which way up the pentagram was made. The concept of the evil inverted pentagram was invented by followers of French magus Éliphas Lévi. The medieval choir stalls in St. Botolph’s church at Boston, Lincolnshire, England, show the medieval use of the pentagram in this orientation, certainly not with evil intention. The pentagram at the centerpiece of a medieval rose window in Paderborn Cathedral in Germany is also oriented that way. The starfish is pentagrammic in shape and was used as a magical protection. The fish called “stella” (starfish) was to be fastened with the blood of a fox by a brass nail to the gate as a preventive against “evil medicines” (Agrippa 1533 I, XLVI). House Glyphs, Sigils, and Spells When bricks began to be used in buildings, they were handmade and fired in wood-burning stacks, so they were not all the same color. Bricklayers made patterns in the walls they built, and a popular design was the diamond or ing-rune shape. The protective pattern called “God’s Eye” and “Godsoog” on English and Dutch fishermen’s ganseys (sweaters) is an array of five diamonds. The sigil was painted on wall plaques in fishermen’s inns, with the motto “God sees you,” warning the fishermen to behave properly when away from home. Traditional knitters from Arnemuiden used diamond motifs symbolizing prosperity that came from the brickwork of the buildings in the fishing port (van der Klift-Tellegen, 1987, 19, 36). In eastern England in the nineteenth century bricks were being made on a large scale in different colors, so bricklayers chose contrasting colored bricks to make diamond and ing-rune patterns. On Twelfth Night in German-speaking countries, the Sternsinger go around houses carrying a paper or wooden star on a pole. They sing an Epiphany carol, and then one of them writes in chalk over the door a formula consisting of the initials of the Three Wise Men in the Nativity story--Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar--with crosses between them and the year on either side; for example, 20 C+M+B 15. This is said to protect the house and its inhabitants until the next Epiphany. Another German tradition is that if one draws crosses on the doors before Walpurgisnacht (May Eve, after sunset on April 30th) the house is protected against witchcraft (Schmidt 1988, I, 93).

Richards-taylor I got this one on kindle, then went back and bought a physical copy so I'd be able to put in flags and easily go back to look up interesting facts. (Perhaps someday I'll learn how to do that on the electronic devices, but until then, I felt I needed a physical copy as well. I wish Pennick lived nearby I'd love to be able to chat with him.

By deanna james The cover caught my attention right away. After reading the synopsis I knew this book was going to be a great read. A young man taking a plunge off a 30 story building. What in life could be so horrible to make someone do that? This book was well written. It started out a little on the slow side but quickly took off. I loved the fact that each floor Rich fell told a story of life leading to his fate. Rich wanted to get his life together. He would've done so. His mistake was hooking back up with Quan. His life spiraled out of control. The deeper he got in the harder it was for him to get out. Rich made his decisions and knew what the outcome could possibly be. In the end Rich knew the life he lead and the lives he took would eventually catch up to him. He was prepared to pay with his life if that was his destiny. Everything his father instilled in him was imbedded in his brain. If he was to go out he would like a man. In his mind jumping off that building to face the ultimate death was his way as going out like a G.Throughout the book the author keep me interested. Truly a page turner. Murder, drugs, corrupted police, betrayal, Sex and living in the fast lane. this book had it all. I didn't want the book to end. Mainly because I knew what the outcome would be. Although I hoped some kind of miracle would. Just some wishful thinking. It's fiction right? Great read. The Cunning Linquist is definitely an author to keep tabs on.4 The Reader N U

As we make choices, we learn lessons along the way. What we do with the choices and lessons are up to us.Rich introduced himself in the prologue by jumping off a thirty story building. What a way to open up. Rich has just touched down after completing a five year bid. He hasn't been successful in finding employment. He wants to stay out of trouble, but sometimes trouble finds you.Rich jumps back into the streets head first. It's sure to be trouble, and more than he bargained for. He goes toe to toe with enemies, cops, and trouble. Rich seems as if things will be better but we all know the streets have a way of raising you or killing you. Rich is in an all out war and at times he is losing and others he's winning.Along the way, Rich reflects back on his upbringing and lessons learned from his father. His father was 100% just let and imparted jewels of the streets to Rich. Rich thinks back to the lessons throughout the story and shows his intelligence.I am giving four stars. The Linguist grabbed my attention and kept it. This was not your typical street story, with glitz and glamour. It was realistic.

The one thing that really caught my attention with this book was the cover. The cover had me wondering what was going to happen and why was this man jumping from a building. Once I read the book, I realized it had to do with the number of levels to the building and how each level had a story with it. Once I started reading the book, I struggled to read it in the beginning because it was a little slow but once the book moved along, I was captivated by the each story that I read. I definitely enjoyed reading this book and I will pick up another book from this author very soon. Try something new and grab this book. Its not your normal urban read and that's what makes it so unique.4 THE READER NU

At first I thought Jae would be a good look for her, but he's about the dumbest trap king I've ever known. He can't seem to shake Kay's skank behind and I honestly don't think he wants to. Maddie knows Jared is no good for her, but she doesn't know how to leave him alone. When John comes along he's like her knight in shining armor however, all that comes tumbling down and we're left with a cliffhanger wondering who in the heck that chick is banging on the door. A bomb.com read and I can't wait for part two!!!!

After the Civil War, the South was divided into five military districts occupied by Union forces. Out of these regions, a remarkable group of writers emerged. Experiencing the long-lasting ramifications of Reconstruction firsthand, many of these writers sought to translate the era's promise into practice. In fiction, newspaper journalism, and other forms of literature, authors including George Washington Cable, Albion Tourgee, Constance Fenimore Woolson, and Octave Thanet imagined a new South in which freedpeople could prosper as citizens with agency. Radically re-envisioning the role of women in the home, workforce, and marketplace, these writers also made gender a vital concern of their work. Still, working from the South, the authors were often subject to the whims of a northern literary market. Their visions of citizenship depended on their readership's deference to conventional claims of duty, labor, reputation, and property ownership. The circumstances surrounding the production and circulation of their writing blunted the full impact of the period's literary imagination and fostered a drift into the stereotypical depictions and other strictures that marked the rise of Jim Crow. Sharon D. Kennedy-Nolle blends literary history with archival research to assess the significance of Reconstruction literature as a genre. Founded on witness and dream, the pathbreaking work of its writers made an enduring, if at times contradictory, contribution to American literature and history.

Review A fascinating and original reading of the popular literature produced during Reconstruction. . . . A significant contribution to the scholarship on the literature of the Civil War.--ChoiceKeeps the reader moving through the South. . . . Will be of interest to historians, literary scholars, and general-interest readers in Southern literature.--African American Review[Provides] insights into the post-Civil War literary marketplace and its containment of literary visions of a more egalitarian South.--Journal of American History

Review With this ambitious and fascinating work, Sharon D. Kennedy-Nolle addresses a substantial gap in Civil War scholarship: the lack of sustained analysis of the popular literature produced during Reconstruction. Writing Reconstruction offers an unparalleled look at how a diverse literature published in newspapers, magazines, and books helped to create and sustain the racial politics of post-Civil War America.--Alice Fahs, author of The Imagined Civil War: Popular Literature of the North and South, 1861–1865Original and historically rich, Writing Reconstruction will provoke discussion and debate. The book explores the impact of military districting on literary production and charts the missed opportunities that led the South away from the egalitarian ideals of Reconstruction and toward Southern Redemption and Jim Crow. Sharon D. Kennedy-Nolle restores these once popular but now largely forgotten Reconstruction-era writers to mainstream American literary studies while placing their works in intellectual dialogue with major American authors and southern ideologues. A compelling portrait of the post–Civil War South.--Edlie Wong, University of Maryland

About the Author Sharon D. Kennedy-Nolle is consulting faculty for the Samuel Rudin Academic Resource Center at Iona College.

Part History, Part Literary Criticsm By Amazon Customer Sharon Kennedy-Nolle fills in major gaps in literary history by discussing reconstruction writing through the prism of the five military districts created by the Federal government. She carefully treats the works of Constance Fenimore Woolson, Albion Tourgee, George Washington Cable, and Octave Thanet. She also discuss the literary productions of Storer College. She writes with both scholarly precision and emotional intensity. The quality of mind that she brings to her work is alluring.A first-class effort on all levels.

By charles The book was really helpful but there is one thing that readers should keep in mind. When choosing the numbers from the Chaldean Numerology chart, you should choose based on how your name SOUNDS and not how it is actually written. The true numerical value and vibration is in the sound. I did that and the definitions that correspond with the deities were a much closer fit. Instead of using CHARLES MAYS I spell it out phonetically, CHARALS MEIS. Also, in the EXPRESSION part of your name, it would recommend to get a free VEDIC astrology chart done(there are sites that do that online) and see what is your ascendant or rising sign is. Your rising sign shows you HOW you EXPRESS yourself to the world and how you express your gifts. So if you have a bunch of deities in the number 2 section that share the same archetype they are all going to express it a little differently. Hanuman which is ruled by Mars is going to express himself a little more differently that Ogun who is also ruled by Mars. The same with Ganesh and Eshu(Mercury) and Lakshmi and Oshun(Venus). Your rising sign "fine tunes" it, but like Sharron Ali Myers said, that is not to say that you could not use the deities that are not a direct match for your vibration. I highly recommend this book!! Buy it, apply it and enjoy!!

GNOSISMATTERS.COM RECOMMENDS DEITY LINKAGE By Amazon Customer As a Spiritual Consultant of www.gnosismatters.com, I often help people identify their spiritual parents and give instructions on how to build a personal altar. I have found Deity Linkage by S. Ali Meyers valuable for others to use to discover this important information. The system of identification that S. Ali Meyers uses in this book, introduces the spiritual seeker on how to resonate and develop these archetypal divine forces within one's soul complex. Knowing your spiritual parents i.e., soul patterns helps you to establish a divine linkage with one's inner gods and outer gods necessary to build a power generator (Altar) to trap divine energy for the purpose of gaining the power of self knowledge. I highly recommend this valuable tool.

By Priestess Auset Ra Amen Excellent manual using Chaldean numerology to find your deity. in the Pythagorean system my birth name is a number 4, in the Chaldean system its a number 9, what is so funny is the deities listed were the very ones I had been working with for years and who's presence I felt strongly throughout my spiritual journey, some are even ancestral energies that comes from my matriarchal bloodline so this is a very accurate system. the book is also a cultural boon so no matter what spiritual system you practice, your cultural preference there is something here for everyone. This book is a guide to help you not only find a deity based on your science you came to this realm with, but how to begin to work with those energies, I'm going to purchase a few more copies and pass them out to my children to begin working with. in the back it gives you instructions on how to set up a basic altar, offerings to the gods and some really cool prayers, not only to the ancestors but to the deities as well, also listed are pictures of various altars to give you an idea of how to set up you own spiritual base. the author also cites Dr Mitchell Gibson who is quite the Metaphysical teacher on all laws of Metaphysics. I would like to thank the author for doing a manual such as this now I have something concrete to recommend to my students, family and friends Ase S Ali Myers for this wonderful blessing.

No matter how many steps she tried taking forward something always got in the way and changed the course of things. Ariane proved to really be dumb. She should've listened when her family warned her about Jayshawn, but she had to learn on her own. Jayshawn was still doing too much. His obsession was crazy and his behavior to get what he wanted wasn't any better. I felt bad for Collin because sometimes being nice and helpful can be a persons downfall if they're not careful. Tamika and Alexis were very stubborn but I was glad they could get things right. There were so many times I wish someone would knock some sense into Alexis. No matter how much a situation didn't seem right, she still managed to be caught up in some mess. Smh at Malik. That wife is crazy. I know it's always said it's not tricking if you got it, but sometimes one fails to realize the consequences. Now I'm ready for part 3. Will Ariane's role be revealed, what more does Jayshawn have up his sleeves, who's about to catch themselves in the altercation based on the ending, Alexis ever be able to live a normal life after everything that's happened to her, and how much more Alexis have to endure because of her ways?!

The summary lead me to believe that Alexis' actions would now play into the title. Being a bit selfish "using what she's got to get what she wants" aka trickin'. (or was her brief dalliance with Malik the trickin'????) hmmmm I guess I like for the title, summary and actual story to connect, but I am sure there was some sense in the madness for the author. And I thought okay all that happened in part 1 would harden her heart and she would come out as a bit of a bad ass- less victim. Alexis still has not realized/accepted/acknowledged any responsibility for her actions in all that occurred. The stand out in this book was Ariane. i was thinking Alexis who? I was more interested in how Ariane went from a 16 year old baby mama to having the money to pay for Shawn's legal fees AND keep his commissary "stacked" and then to killer. What was her thinking behind killing Colin? Did she want to blame Shawn all along or had she set out to frame Alexis thus getting her out of the picture by sending her to jail-that was her ultimate goal right? Atleast it was before she finally wised up to the real Shawn. The only thing that made sense was Shawn killing Tamika out of revenge. And Ariane setting up Shawn once he betrayed her. Again not sure how I feel about the story, but i applaud the author for putting her craft out there for everyone to experience.
