This book for grandparents is centered on the grandparent-grandchild relationship. I am both a social work professional and a grandmother of 8, and I invite you to join me on a journey of exploration and affirmation as we consider together our individual circumstances and our goals and wishes for our relationship with our grandchildren. Using the familiar quote "There are only two things we can leave our (grand)children One is Roots The other is Wings" and thoughtful interviews with grandparents and grandchildren - and with the "middle generation" too, we seek to understand and explore what grandparenting means to each of us personally, and of reflect upon possible ways to enhance and deepen that relationship. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 begins by developing and understanding of grandparents' individual and unique circumstances and histories, and the ways that they have related to their grandchildren, near and far, younger and older, welcoming as well as distant. This is followed by an in-depth exploration of both the "roots" - what we wish to pass on, and the "wings" - the ways in which we would like to support and contribute to our grandchildren's success and happiness. Part II focuses on our grandchildren, first by exploring their world, and then by introducing the ideas and experiences of individual grandchildren in relating to their grandparents. Part III focuses on intergenerational communication skills, and includes ideas for addressing some of the challenges that we may face, such as long-distance grandparenting, language and cultural barriers to communication, trust, privacy, responsibility, family contexts, and the all-important role of the middle generation. Part IV combines the insights from the previous sections to develop a possible context and method for creating and sustaining relationships with are meaningful and satisfying to both grandparents and grandchildren. Each of the 8 chapters concludes with some suggestions for thought and self-reflections, and space for writing notes, feelings, and ideas. The final section, "Our Grandchildren's Gifts" offers some personal stories and insights of special moments with grandchildren.

About the Author Juliet Rothman is a social worker who has worked directly with elders, children, and families for over 30 years. She has taught in these fields as University of California Berkeley's School of Social Welfare and at Catholic University's National Catholic School for Social Service for 25 years. Add up these two numbers, and the years of school, and you have - a Senior! Juliet is the author of several textbooks in social work, addressing ethics and values, developing relationships, working in the field of social work, cross-cultural communication and relationship-building, and disability, as well as other areas of social work. She has also written in the field of bereavement. Her books are available world-wide and have been translated into several languages. The devoted grandmother of 8, she has enjoyed every age and interest, and has been very involved with each of her grandchildren. She has especially welcomed getting to know all of her grandchildren's friends and their families. The idea for this book grew out of many conversations with both grandparents and grandchildren, during which each shared ideas, experiences, and concerns about the grandparent-grandchild relationship, and their desire to have the very best and most meaningful times possible with each other. She says that the process of interviewing grandparents and grandchildren for her book has been one of the most wonderful and rewarding experiences of her life!
