James Girls (1), by F.J. Stevens

About the Author F.J. Stevens is a creative writer, singer, songwriter, a native Washingtonian with an immense love for her city with a wildly vivid imagination. She spent the better part of the last 20 years in corporate America, until the day that a corporate merger (and a fairly generous severance package) sent her home to her sofa, where she was able to exhale, put up her feet for a while and pen her first novel, the first in a series of gritty urban family sagas, "James Girls". Leveraging on her experiences, and the many interesting characters she’s encountered growing up in the inner city of DC; endeavoring into the world of entertainment; navigating through the corporate world in a brown girl’s skin and dating in this new modern era of social media where popularity is paramount and dumbing yourself down while turning up is the acceptable norm, F.J. has seen and experienced quite a bit in her day. So, you take a handful of those characters, a few of the more interesting experiences, and sprinkle in some imagination, and you’ve got a recipe for some seriously entertaining material…or a hot mess. Depending on your taste. Today F. J. wears many hats including that of a doting mother to a beautiful son on the autism spectrum, a dedicated mentor to young at risk girls in her city, a businesswoman, real estate investor and entrepreneur. Each of these roles have their own rich rewards and she is beyond tickled to now add “authoress” to the ring.

Stevens and I have to say I am truly impressed with the author's ability to engross the reader into the mindset and the dilemmas that each of the characters faced in the book. Not only did the author effectively incorporate DC culture and dialect into the book, but she also provides a true mental illustration of what it is like to be born into a lifestyle or family structure that is already equipped with its own unique and cultural challenges and influences. As soon as the reader feels safe that the characters have figured things out, another event causes the character to have to figure out a new plan of action. Issues such as drugs, sex, blended families, single parenting, crime, poverty, trust, greed, revenge, morality, law, love, loss, forgiveness, family secrets, facades and loyalty all play an important part in this book. The book also gives a true depiction of how urban neighborhoods function, thrive and why some people choose to live among their hopeless circumstances and others do everything in their power to get out and never come back. The decisions that the James Girls must make are not easy and at times their circumstances truly have you wondering what you would do in the same situation. The book had a wonderful flow, the characters were well written and the two main characters were everything you'd expect two sisters to be - polar opposites. Whether you relate to either of the James Girls, the book will have you picking sides, patting them on the back, mentally screaming at them and smacking your teeth with a "sister girl" attitude. I appreciated the raw, gritty language and the true-to-DC nature of the book. If you are from the DC/MD/VA (DMV) area, you will need to explain to people why you are smiling and grinning while reading as the culture is truly felt in the book. The end will leave you wondering what the sisters will get into (or out of) in the sequel. Definitely could not put it down!

I would recommend this book to any pastor trying to reach this population in today's society. It brings you into the mind of these individuals and how they process information in the challenging world in which they find themselves, dealing with life in this high tech-non-facial connectional way. Yet, seeking a personal connection with a since of suspicion about all their relationships. Check it out.. the James Girls... I've learned something..
