Whether recalling long days on a tractor, late nights at prayer meeting, or the joyful heartbreak of raising a family, the poems in Twisted Shapes of Light take truth where they find it. William Jolliff wraps both arms around the phenomenon old Quakers called ''that of God in everyone,'' welcoming into his work a unique cast of characters seldom portrayed in contemporary poetry. The result is an honest struggle with faith and failure--and even an occasional revelation.

If you appreciate the complexity of the world, even for believers, you're in for a treat! There is fire in these poems but it is not the same fire in every poem. In some passion and bitterness, in some hospitality and compassion, in some whimsy and skepticism. Even an undeniable sensuality in a few. In all of them, William Jolliff's love of the unpretentious comes through. Whether he's venting about the harsh hollowness of fundamentalism or treasuring the crumbs of memory from a church potluck in the rolling farmlands of central Ohio, it's all absolutely real. Bill Jolliff is a rare blend of keen intellect, poetic mastery and dirt-real roots. Just about everything that he is and has been shows through in the poems of this collection: farm kid, seminary student, college professor, musician, father and more. This is real stuff here, common lives and people subjected to uncommon examination and reflection and offered up in music and meter, image and sound, all well-honed and polished. His love of the earth and the earthy weaves its way throughout these stories, often in vivid images.Do not take this for light, quick reading. This is the sipping bourbon of poetry: take your time and then take your time again. These poems bear up to repeated reading and every now and then, there'll be a line, usually the last one, that'll just about pull the breath right out of you. But in the end, you'll find some resonation with Jolliff's journey, "… he learns the way light/can shine through pain…"

Middleton Jolliff's newest collection is beautifully crafted, honest, and humble writing. Full of music, teaching, spirit, and light, these poems will stick with you throughout your day, and I suspect, much longer.

I particularly enjoyed "The Way We Live with Sorrow By Daniel Roberson I just had the pleasure this evening of finishing up this delightful collection of poems. It is full of vibrant characters, joys, sorrows, and the honest seeking after God. I particularly enjoyed "The Way We Live with Sorrow," "Sermon for a Monday," and "The Sheep Farmer," among many others. If you like poetry, and even if you don't, I'd give it a try.
