This book has been professionally retyped and reformatted to fit modern day standards by officials of the Portuguese Institute of Higher Studies in Geopolitics and Auxiliary Sciences. The mass of existing material on this subject is so great that I have not attempted to make a survey of the whole of European 'Witchcraft', but have confined myself to an intensive study of the cult in Great Britain. In order, however, to obtain a clearer understanding of the ritual and beliefs I have had recourse to French and Flemish sources, as the cult appears to have been the same throughout Western Europe. The New England records are unfortunately not published in extenso; this is the more unfortunate as the extracts already given to the public occasionally throw light on some of the English practices. It is more difficult to trace the English practices than the Scotch or French, for in England the cult was already in a decadent condition when the records were made; therefore records in a purely English colony would probably contain much of interest. The sources from which the information is taken are the judicial records and contemporary chroniclers. In the case of the chroniclers I have studied their facts and not their opinions. I have also had access to some unpublished trials among the Edinburgh Justiciary Records and also in the Guernsey Greffe.

Dr Murray's research brought the rebirth of witchcraft as it is practiced today. She led the way for people like Doreen Valiente, most importantly, and Raymond Buckland later. And Starhawk after. Because of this, Margaret Alice Murray was the champion of all the following and continuing research of the witchcraft community. I studied the book and found my forgotten roots. Read the book and find yours. Blessed Be.

Terrible Research and Total Hype By FYI During years of anthropological research, I've seen this book referred to again and again, yet it simply consists of pseudo-research; it's a total waste of your time and money. Murray's outdated premises are based on the records of confessions of supposed "witches" during their incarceration, torture, and trials. Chapters detail the suffering of these innocents, yet this is evidence of Church doctrine and cruelty, not documentation of anything resembling witchcraft, or old folk ways.Murray's entire thesis is derived from false fragments of pseudo-information, confessions extracted from accused "witches." Yet the witchcraft community has often accepted Murray's nonsense without question. During years of research, I've seen this book referred to again and again, and can't believe that it's been given credibility by so many authors. In anthropological circles, this book is derided as one of the worst examples of poor academic research ever published. It's like theologists defining Judaic practices during the period of the Spanish Inquisition by what victims said about their faith during torture and subsequent "confession." Or what slavery was like from the point of view of the exploiters.Murray actually postulates that the consistency of the practices described in the confessions of "witches" is evidence of a widespread witch religion. Yes, it is evidence, but evidence pertaining to the consistent beliefs of the Papal Bull of Innocent VIII against witchcraft! As in: the tormentors all consistently asked the same set of questions. Thus, the practices of Murray's so-called witches are consistent because the torturers were! This clearly does not reflect some kind of organized witch-religion, it only demonstrates the consistent organization of the Church. One can't write seriously about witchcraft, or learn about it, with this terrible, totally unreliable information, extracted under duress by the Church. Which is not to say that some forms of ancient folkways, traditions, and yes, even various kinds of witchcraft or shamanism may have survived throughout Europe after the spread of Christianity.Instead of this terrible documentation of suffering, try the academic series of six volumes edited by Bengt Ankarloo, "Witchcraft and Magic in Europe." There is a lot of New Age garbage out there, but you can pick through fun books by Doreen Valiente, or Pauline & Dan Campanelli. For the real thing, read up on authentic tribal religions, examine the excellent works on shamanism and plants by Wade Davis and Richard Evans Schultes. You don't need to waste your time on Murray's outdated garbage.

Prior linguistics knowledge is a must (or at least knowledge of French) By Shane Well if you're looking for this book then I'm sure you already know that many (if not most) of Murray's claims have been discredited, so it's not worth harping on that. The book itself was in the condition described (great). The only thing I would like to say to potential buyers of this book is that there is extensive use of old English, and many of the testimonies are in French. If you don't have much background in Linguistics (like me) you may find it a bit hard to read at times (like I did). I understand that Murray's "The God of the Witches" is a bit more friendly and easier to understand, if that's what you're looking for. Overall though I'm satisfied, because the product I bought was in fact what was advertised.

Barbara and her life partner, John, created the first (and perhaps the only commune for grown-ups where open sexuality was encouraged and fully embraced. We called it Sandstone Retreat. Nestled in the wooded splendor of Topanga Canyon, California, with sweeping vistas of the Malibu Mountains and Pacific Ocean, it was fifteen acres of beauty and pleasure, a retreat from artificiality. It was a community where a person’s mind, body, and sexuality came together in total abandonment. The dress code was total nudity, and the mind-set was acceptance of all things pleasurable, sensual, and sexual. Barbara Williamson, "the most liberated woman in America," shares her life story for the first time to tell the world about the controversial Sandstone Retreat in Malibu, California in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s As cofounder with her life partner, John, recognized as “the messiah of sex,” of the highly successful and controversial Sandstone Retreat in Malibu, California, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the couple started what became known as the hub of the sexual revolution. The clothing-optional, alternate-lifestyle Sandstone Retreat was outrageously popular, with a membership reaching 500 and host of nearly 8,000 visitors. Long before today’s reality television inundated the airwaves with its media “personalities,” Barbara and John Williamson were the darlings of the media, with newspapers, magazines, books, movies, and television shows clamoring for interviews. In this book - Secret Revealed By The Pioneers Of The Sexual Revolution : Finding Yourself By Removing Sexual Boundaries, you will learn about the story of the then controversial Sandstone Retreat of the later 1960's and early 1970's

Two brothers learn about their mixed culture using metaphoric examples from the aquatic wild life during a trip to the aquarium. The book is beautifully illustrated with colourful characters and witty rhyming.

Price This is a story I thought had no interest for me whatsoever, but the author made the subject matter so interesting and enticing! I think the author gives a view of BDSM that would surprise anyone who is totally in the dark about this often forbidden subject. I give full praise to the author and her approach to this subject. Can't wait for more of this story!

By Amazon Customer This material was new material for me, but I'm impressed with the authors ability to paint the picture. The only problem was it was too short, but I'm definitely ready for the next book.

It was a good explanation of BDSM for a novice. Joslin is overly sceptical of her best friends treatment by her Dom. Hopefully their friendship can be repaired. I did think their were too many editing mistakes for a book this short. It would take such a short time for someone to do so.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent Read By SusanS Hamilton combines a fascinating look at Paul's life and his shaping of early Christian teaching with detailed maps, timelines and a surprising number of photographs. It has always been hard for me to follow the journeys of Paul and to imagine where he taught and what the places were like - this helped tremendously. As always, this author brings each chapter to a close with a connection to our lives and faith today. It would be meaningful for people new to the Bible and is challenging enough for more seasoned readers.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Paul & Jesus; Paul & The Church By Leah Chang I always enjoy Pastor Hamilton's practical scholarship and his attention to contextualizing scripture into our own life and mission! The Call rollicks and frolics along with the energy and excitement of the NT book of Acts, and that's fitting, since a lot of the information we have about Saul (Jewish name) / Paul (Roman name) of Tarsus comes from the narrative in Luke's Acts.Pastor Adam knows the texts extremely well; he's also getting to know the terrain and layout of the biblical Holy Land. As we journey with Paul and his companions, Hamilton observes what was going on in politics, in Jewish circles, in Christian hangouts, "among the" Greek and Roman gods and culture back at that time and suggests real-life present day applications for each of us in our churches and in the surrounding communities. The book places Paul's life, ministry, and letters in the times and places when and where he grew up, learned, taught, talked, and walked; this New Covenant of grace is not entirely different from the Old one, but it's about Trusting Jesus rather than Trusting Torah. In the Protestant world in which many of us live (and move, and have our being), Paul is our most prominent theologian; we think we know him mostly for his Christology (on pages 72-74 we get a very shorthand version of the saving person and work of Jesus the Christ), yet in The Call Hamilton reminds us it is the work and reign of the Pentecostal Spirit of Life that inspired and enabled Paul /Saul; the Spirit of Life that raised Jesus from the dead in turn brings us to living faith in Jesus. As Martin Luther famously said in his Small Catechism: "I cannot by my own effort or understanding know Jesus my Lord or come to him, but the Holy Ghost has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith, just as the HS calls, gathers, enlightens and sanctifies the whole Church..." In his Acts of the Apostles the gospel-writer Luke brings us most of what we know about the chronology and events in Paul's life; in fact, the Spirit is prominent throughout Luke and Acts. (Pneumatology is the branch of theology that emphasizes the person and work of the HS.)The six chapters of The Call describe God's call to the Apostle Paul along with a parallel call to each of us: 1.to Follow Christ; 2.to Go; 3.to Suffer; 4.to Love; 5.to Give, and 6.to be Faithful. Adam Hamilton includes a few anecdotes and incidents from his own life, mostly in ways that encourage us to discover similarities in our own. The hardbound book is a comfortable size to hold and heft, printed in easily readable type, and includes B&W maps and photographs. However, I seriously wish the book had been edited to omit and change at least most - if not all - of the too many sentences written in the passive voice.

Hamm First off, if you're looking for a complete understanding of Paul, his life and world, this book is too short for that. And a bunch of you are probably thinking "thank goodness for that".If you're looking for a "popular" account, and especially if you want a great book to do a small-group study, you probably can't do better.Hamilton fills his book with photos and stories to shed light on the man who some say founded Christianity. The book is a quick and easy read, but still gives enough depth and background to give the average Christian a firm grounding in who this man was and why he means so much to us today.Highly recommended, especially if you can get a group to do it together.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong... is the sixth book in Jeremy Clarkson's bestselling The World According to Clarkson series.

No one writes about cars like Jeremy Clarkson. While most correspondents are too buys diving straight into BHP, MPG and MPH, Jeremy appreciates that there are more important things to life. Don't worry, we'll get to the cars. Eventually. But first we should consider:

· The case for invading France · The overwhelming appeal of a nice sit-down · The inconvenience of gin and tonic · Why clothes are no better than ice cream · Spot-welding with the Duchess of Kent · And why Denmark is the best place in the world

Armed only with conviction, curiosity, enthusiasm and a stout pair of trousers, Jeremy hurtles around the world - along motorway, autoroute, freeway and autobahn - in search of answers to life's puzzles and ponderings without forethought or fear for his own safety. What, you have to ask, could possibly go wrong...Praise for Clarkson:

'Brilliant... laugh-out-loud' Daily Telegraph

'Outrageously funny... will have you in stitches' Time Out

'Very funny . . . I cracked up laughing on the tube' Evening Standard

Jeremy Clarkson began his career on the Rotherham Advertiser. Since then he has written for the Sun, theSunday Times, the Rochdale Observer, the Wolverhampton Express & Star, all of the Associated Kent Newspapers and Lincolnshire Life. Today he is the tallest person working in British television.

By The Big F More in-your-face bombs from Clarkson, with social commentary and reviews of cars. Or should I say Audis and Mercs. Normally, I would give the man five stars. He writes superbly and is FUNNY. But just how many Audis does he need to review? A little more variation would work. But I'll continue to buy his books and read every word, not because I'm a disciple, but because I like good writing and good British humour.

Each column is a car review, though like Top Gear, sometimes only nominally. Incidentally, the columns occasionally refer to "star ratings" accompanying the reviews, but the actual ratings are not included, at least in the Kindle version. I'm not sure if this applies to the print edition as well.As with other Clarkson books, several caveats apply for non-British readers. He's writing in a UK newspaper, so expect to not quite get some references that are "too British" and/or related to "the news of the day" of a day now largely forgotten. Also, most of the cars reviewed are ones you probably won't ever have a chance to drive in North America. Often because he's discussing weird little cars sold on a strange continent where a significant number of people buy cars with diesel engines for some reason. Or because, even though they're freely available here, few of us ever have the opportunity to drive Ferraris, Aston Martins, Lamborghinis, etc. But they're fun to experience vicariously, and I also find it interesting to have a window into a very different market for "normal" cars than the U.S. - where, for instance, Japanese cars are generally disdained for reasons I still don't quite understand, and people seem to think Ford is a British company.Apart from the caveats, there aren't many surprises here. If you enjoy Clarkson on Top Gear or in his other books, you'll probably enjoy this book too. If you don't, you probably won't.

Not the 6th "Accirding to Clarkson" By Barbara Albritton On the full Amazon site this is described at the 6th in the "World According to Clarkson", it is not. It is a compilation of his Sunday Times motoring columns which are well-written, but not strictly social commentary as the others are. The Kindle site and Amazon app. describe it correctly, but in order to purchase you have to go to the full site. I would have ordered a sample, but buoyed by the "6th in the series" comment (because that's what I was hoping it was) I went ahead and purchased it.

What if learning these life-changing manifestation principles can be as easy as having afternoon tea? What if you can internalize in ten afternoons or less, what usually takes years of advanced spiritual practice to master? Join bestselling author and spiritual explorer Richard Dotts in his latest book Afternoon Manifestations, as he skillfully distills ten key manifestation principles which have taken him years to pick up into a series of straightforward afternoon lessons. Each chapter of this book revolves around an important manifestation concept, which if understood and applied, will allow physical manifestations to flow freely and more spontaneously into one’s life experience. The focus of this book goes beyond gaining a mere theoretical understanding of these profound manifestation principles. Through the use of examples and inner exercises at the end of each chapter, Richard takes his readers by hand and guides them step-by-step through the actual application of these techniques in their own lives. Drawing on his own experiences over the years, Richard touches on the following often-neglected aspects of our physical manifestations: (1) Does the Universe speak to us and send us impulses on what to do next? — Learn as Richard shows you how to accurately “receive” and act on Universal impulse for the fulfillment of your desires. (2) Realizing the secrets of the I AM teachings — There has been a recent renaissance of the I AM teachings and its application to the manifestation process. But few people understand how to apply these esoteric teachings to their lives in a practical way. Richard takes his readers through the actual realization of these magical teachings in one’s life. (3) Freeing ourselves from past manifestations — Are you still trying to re-create that one big manifestation that has occurred in the past with little success? Richard explains why it is important that we free ourselves from the baggage of our past manifestations and focus on creating from a brand new state. (4) Should we switch our intentions to something “smaller” and more achievable? — Richard’s take on this question will delight you, as he explains why the constant switching of our intentions to something smaller and more “believable” may actually delay rather than speed up the manifestation process. If you are interested in achieving a deeper understanding of these manifestation principles and wish to create from an infinite state of possibilities with each new day of your life, Afternoon Manifestations will be an invaluable guide along your spiritual journey.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Ummm By Ladii_Dinkins Ok the first book wasn't great but good so I waited for the sequel and this one wasn't good to me. The book is al over the place. It moved so fast that I often get myself confused. The time didn't flow well. One minutes character is 5 weeks then 6 months then the baby is a year old. I think the writer has good potential she just might need to take her time. There were times I would read a chapter but didn't know who was talking, I think the writer has the ability to put out good stories just need to focus on the details and pace the book. Karina went from 1 partner to 3 in a years time. I just wished the book was better. I'm left completely confused versus anxious about the next part.

Although there were some inconsistencies in the book, it did not take away from the storyline. It seems as though Karina can't catch a break. Poor child has no idea who was in her corner. And that ending??? Yeah, I will definitely be reading part 3. Good job Kyra!!!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. By Shada I must say I was somewhat disappointed in this book. I waited a long time for part 2 and it just didn't have that fire like part 1. It was not a bad read but the book didn't hold my attention like part 1 did. I will be reading part 3 because I know the author is good at what she do so I will give the series another try.

22 of 23 people found the following review helpful. 4 stars for the book, but......... By Barkbad This is definitely not Mallory Monroe at her best (i.e., the last Tommy and Reno books); however, I am giving this book five (5) stars to show my appreciation for her. I am an interracial romance FANATIC; however, it can be difficult to find quality stories in this genre. I am so tired of seeing all those ".......meet/kiss/shag/marry/shoot Billionaire" books. And if one more author charges $2.99 for a 69 page book, I'm throwing my kindle out the window......like seriously. On the other side of the coin, you have amazing authors who always produce quality work (i.e., Pace, Mynx, Laveen - just to name a few), but they don't publish frequent enough; some maybe 2/3 books a year. However, I can always count on Ms. Monroe to give us something great to read every 4/6 weeks. And even though some books are better than others, she always come through! That's what I love about this author- her consistency. She is consistent with the quality of her books and the time frame in which they are published. And for that, I'm giving a would be four (4) stars book five (5) stars.I actually enjoyed Brent and Mal's story, but it didn't have that "punch" that is ever present in the Sal and Reno stories, and the last Tommy book. This book just didn't give me that "rush", that "heat" that I want in all her books now. I actually think it's because Brent and Mal are such good people. What does that say about me that I prefer the not-so-good guys like Sal, Tommy, and Reno.....what can I say!! I am glad that this story answered that breakup question - when we first met Brent in Sal's book, he was single. Well this story explains the reason why. I have to agree with another reviewer that I didnt like reading about the sex life of the other family members in this book; it should have been more about Brent and Mal. With that said, I still enjoyed this book. The drama kept coming and coming and coming!! And I still love the interaction between the entire Sinatra clan!I end this by saying that I am really looking forward to Mick Sinatra's story! I have high expectations for that book, so I'm going to need Ms. Monroe to bring it!!!!!! 4/6 weeks - I'm waiting..............

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Got To Love Those Sinatras By Diana R Love the Sinatras. The family just keeps growing. Brent is a chip off the old "Big Daddy" block. Alpha all the way! Loving his strong woman with a passion. This series is my new favorite. Not feeling the Tommy and Sal show in the Gabrini series. This book has all the Sinatras, Charles, Jenay, and all their offspring, plus the newest members Mal and June. Their theme song should be "We Are Family". Lots of drama, hot sex, and suspense. But they stick together. A quick and fun read. Can't wait to see what's next for the Sinatras of Jericho.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. I'm tired! By LadyQuay Oh my God, it was so many twist and turns in this one that I'm tired lol. Bent and Makayla now have they on series? They have a city to run, or will he step down and let Eddie take over. While he go work for Big Daddy. Now am I wrong for being glad that Denise got killed, cause she was trying to come back a start some mess. I love how Mallory Monroe drop these book like Beyonce do lol.

ABOUT THE BOOK: At the heart of the Christian faith is the overwhelming truth that as God's people we are the dwelling-place, the temple, of the living God. That fact alone should radically transform us in every way-from our understanding of God's love and our value to Him, right down to our every thought, word, and deed. But too often we overlook this profoundly personal reality in search of "theology," convinced that knowing the facts of faith will allow us to experience the power of God. Instead, we must remember that Christianity is a relationship with a living person-the Lord Jesus Christ-who deeply desires to be present with His people. And He empowers us to live a joyful, abundant Christian life-if we will allow Him His place; if we will make Him Lord of all that we have and are. **** ABOUT THE AUTHOR: For over fifty years, Adrian Rogers preached and championed the Word of God. In that time he became one of America's most respected Bible teachers presenting the Good News of Jesus Christ with strong conviction, compassion, and integrity. His ministry continues thanks to a rich legacy of sermons, studies, books, booklets, and other resource materials. Through Love Worth Finding, his multimedia broadcast ministry, tens of thousands of believers have had their faith strengthened and thousands more have entered into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. His teaching will inspire you to grow in your love of the Lord and serve in His kingdom.

By Michael Taylor Since I read this book shortly after Dr. Rogers' passing (unfortunate for us for we lost a great man of God, but fortunate for him since he's in a much better place!!!), the book meant more to me.The book's aim is to encourage and challenge the reader to not become comfortable and complacent in his/her spiritual walk and to grow into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Much of the focus is on personal purity since Rogers states (and with biblical support) that God will not do great and mighty things through dirty vessels. Having had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Rogers preach a few times in person and many times over the tv and radio, I can attest that Dr. Rogers did not mean for personal purity to be the ultimate end. Doing so would need to an over-emphasis on self-introspection. Rather, Rogers was a very evangelistic preacher and dearly wanted to see readers allow God to work through pure vessels to draw others to Him.Read and be challenged to continue to grow in the faith no matter how long you have been a Christian. If you are not a Christian, consider the book's claims on Who Jesus Christ is and what He did for us!

His insights into the personage, power, and presence of the Holy Spirit is inspired and a must read for any, like myself, who have either overlooked or misunderstood the role of the somewhat obscure member of the Trinty. It is the Holy Spirit who initiates the salvation process, baptizes and seals the believer, until the day we meet our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ face-to-face in glory. Why the doctrine of the character and attributes of the Holy Spirit is not highlighted and preached from the pulpits today is a mystery unto itself. Adrian Rogers addresses this deficiency forthright and with conviction.

'It's my feeling that whatever's bothering you, you ought to be able to say it in less than 500 words. The rest is window-dressing ... Probably explains why I didn't write WAR AND PEACE...'Sir Terry Wogan has been busy over the past 10 years writing his ever-popular SUNDAY TELEGRAPH column. In this first collection of the very best of his weekly musings, Terry delivers his distinctively dry and amusing views on life. From the disappointment of the declining years, the ubiquity of TV cooks ('Nowadays, you can't throw a stone in a country road without hitting a television chef, in full colour'), to vanity and those little daily annoyances that drive you to drink, he never fails to entertain. Terry's modern grumbles, gentle social commentary and witty observations make for a delightful assortment of reading.Charming and wry, with not a hint of lickspittle, this is WOGAN'S WORLD at its most entertaining.

This book collects some of his columns for The Daily Telegraph. They are full of his usual wit and humor. When I was stationed in England his morning radio show was one of the highlights of my day. This collection has all the hallmarks of those same musings on life, weather and the eccentric reflections of Wogan. One of the excerpts tells of Wogan having a Guy Fawkes fireworks display on the radio of course - with listeners complaining about the lack of parking, toilet facilities and burnt out fireworks on the carpets around their radios. Ah - yes that is the Wogan I remember. However even though anyone can understand his advice for a stress free Christmas by stuffing the turkey with Prozac, unless you are very familiar with English celebrities, politicians, what a lounge suit is, the BEEB, and the significance of Cheltenham and the gold Cup, one might feel a bit lost in understanding some of what is being written about.

For centuries the book of Psalms has been read as a random collection of poems with no intentional arrangement. But is this a correct understanding?O. Palmer Robertson equips us to see a clear redemptive-historical progression that develops across the five books of Psalms. With the aid of charts in full color, he demonstrates how an intentional structure is indicated by elements such as the placement of acrostic psalms, strategic couplings of Messianic psalms with Torah psalms, and the grouping of psalms by topics. If you love the psalms, Robertson will give you a better grasp of the whole Psalter and a deeper appreciation of each individual poem.To download a free PDF of Dr. Robertson's groundbreaking full-color charts of the structure of the Psalms, visit P&R Publishing's website. The Flow of the Psalms: Discovering Their Structure and Theology. Philipsburg, N.J.: P&R Publishing, 2015. 304pp. ISBN 9781629951331 $21.99 (paperback). What are we to make of the Book of Psalms? Is it just a collection of poems/songs that was thrown together at random? Is there no deeper structure to the work? Is it structured around the Five Books of the Torah (see Gordon Wenham, Psalms as Torah: Reading Biblical Song Ethically [Grand Rapids, Mich.: Baker Academic, 2012].)? The question of the Psalm’s structure is one that has plagued theologians from Augustine to Wellhausen, with every theologian giving a different answer than the one before. It is specifically this problem of structure that Dr. O. Palmer Robertson examines in his new book The Flow of the Psalms: Discovering Their Structure and Theology. That there is a basic structural element that organizes the Psalter is evident from the division of the Psalter into five “books” (Book 1: Psalms 1-41, Book 2: Psalms 42-72, Book 3: Psalms 73-89, Book 4: Psalms 90-106, and Book 5: Psalms 107-150), with the first four ending with a doxology, and the lasting ending with a climactic five-fold chorus of “hallelujah” (Psalms 145-150). This much is widely agreed upon—but Robertson points out that there is in fact much, much more. There are at least twelve elements of basic structure within the Psalms that can be detected.Robertson begins showing some of these architectonic features by demonstrating that Psalm 2, as well as Psalm 1, functions as something of an introduction to the rest of the Psalms. These are the “two poetic pillars” that introduce the recurrent themes of the Psalter, with a focus on the Torah and the centrality of the expected Messiah. These two themes reappear at crucial junctures in the Psalter, with Torah Psalms occurring again at Psalm 19 and 119, underscoring the centrality of the Torah, and Psalms 18 and 118 emphasizing the centrality of the Messiah. That these two themes should be repeatedly linked together at significant points in the Psalter is pregnant with meaning. It is in his examination of the centrality of the Messianic psalms for understanding the redemptive-historical arc of the Psalter that Dr. Robertson really shines. His section on what he terms the “Yahweh Malak (Jehovah is King)” psalms is some of the best work in the field of Old Testament studies that I’ve ever read.Robertson provides new and trenchant insights into the Psalter on practically every page. For example, am I the only one who never noticed that Psalm 22 forms a pivot point in a group of five psalms (Psalms 20-24), uniting two psalms about the Messiah’s kingship with two psalms about Yahweh’s kingship? Because of these sorts of insights, the benefit of Dr. Robertson’s book for preaching should be readily apparent.I’ll not continue to belabor the helpfulness of this work, as I could become uncontrollably effusive in my praise. I recognize that the modern church (thanks to the prevalence of Dispensationalism, among other factors) is woefully ignorant of the Old Testament, and hence of the Psalms as well. Yet there was once a time when the ancient church would not ordain a man who had not memorized the entire Psalter.O. Palmer Robertson holds a Th.M and also the Th.D. from Union Theological Seminary, and has taught at Reformed Theological Seminary (as part of that institution’s original faculty), Westminster Theological Seminary, Covenant Theological Seminary and Knox Theological Seminary. He is currently the Principal of the African Bible Colleges of Malawi and Uganda, and is best known for his books The Christ of the Covenants and The Christ of the Prophets. I am of the opinion that this latest work on The Flow of the Psalms is no less a landmark of biblical theology, and it deserves an extraordinarily broad readership.

Phillipsburg: P&R Publishing, 2015. 336 pp. $21.99I was ecstatic to see this new title from O. Palmer Robertson and P&R Publishing. I have written several academic papers on the Psalms and have been intrigued by the works of Gerald Willson, Jamie Grant, Gordon Wenham, and James Hamilton. For the past two years I have also been preaching through the Psalms on Sunday nights.Scholarship and study of the Psalms has been heavily influenced by the works of Herman Gunkel (1862-1932) and Sigmund Mowinckel (1884-1965) who used form criticism to zoom in and study the psalms individually by breaking them into to different categories and relating them to worship within Jerusalem. While there is benefit from this approach to the psalms it can "miss the forest for the trees." Most commentaries and studies on the Psalms have been various versions of Gunkel's and Mowinckel's approach while few have looked at the Psalms collectively as one book.Robertson's work did not disappoint and will be a bench mark for future studies on the Psalms. Robertson builds on the works of Brevard Childs, Gerald Wilson, Jamie Grant, and Gordon Wenham (and others, though interestingly he did not reference Hamilton's work which presents a very shorter but similar argument in 'God's Glory in Salvation Through Judgment) and looks into the structure of the Psalms as a whole. As Walter Kaiser states in the Forward "The Flow of the Psalms has a host of themes and avenues for further thought and reflection...The impact that this view of Psalter structure will have on New Testament perspectives and studies should be enormous" (xi). I agree with Kaiser's words and found myself reading and re-reading several observations that Robertson makes throughout his work. Part of the reason why this book will be so important going forward is that Robertson brings together a lot of the voices of those arguing for structure and shape of the Psalter into one volume. The first chapter on the book serves as Robertson's Introduction. It is here where Robertson argues the why and need of such an approach. He states "it has the potential of uncovering internal connections among the various psalms and it provides additional light to each individual psalm on the basis of this internal structuring" (3). While others might argue that it is impossible to know exactly how the final form of the psalter came together, that should not prevent studies and efforts to uncover the structure and reasoning behind it. In chapter two Robertson goes over the importance of the introductory Psalms 1 and 2 and how their themes of Torah and Messiah run throughout the Psalms. Other keys Torah Psalms (19, 119) are also paired together with key Messiah Psalms (18,118) and are used as a structural tool for the entire Psalter. Other themes and groups are mentioned to round out the chapter. In chapter three Robertson walks through the covenants of the Old Testament from Creation-the Davidic Covenant and relates how they are captured within the Psalms. Chapter four sets up the remains chapters of the book by looking at the overall flow of the Psalms. Robertson argues for the themes of Confrontation (Book 1), Communication (Book 2), Devastation (Book 3), Maturation (Book 4) and Consummation (Book 5). Chapters 5-9 then walk through each book showing how various psalms have been grouped together intentionally and how they all flow together, within each book and within the whole psalter, to form a unified message. Each chapter is filled with great insights into patterns, connections, groups, and other factors that shape the entire Psalter. The final chapter then summarizes the book and especially the emphasis on the flow of the Psalms.I would recommend this book as a beginning point for anyone interested in understanding the Psalms as "a book." Pastors, students, and scholars would greatly benefit from Robertson's work and like Kaiser states in the Forward, this book presents a springboard into further studies and advancements in the study of the Psalms. I consider myself to be ore advance when it comes to the study of the Psalms and it was still a lot of great insight and study. This is not a quick read. It is one that takes time to ingest because it covers such a large book. When thinking through the flow of the Psalter before reading Robertson's work I came to conclusions similar but slightly different than Robertson's (Hamilton's and Wilson's as well). It appears to me that whoever compiled the Psalms did so intentionally with the flow of the entire Old Testament (TaNaK) in mind in which there is the rise of the a nation (through a King), warning to the nation, exile of the nation, physical return, and a longing for spiritual return. Book 1 presents and introduction (1-2) and the rise and establishment of David's throne through trials(3-41). Book 2 presents exile imagery and warnings (42-50) and what it takes to avoid exile (51-71). Book 3 presents exile and judgment and Book 4 then presents essential what Daniel 9 has predicted...a long period of nothing before spiritual return (exodus) happens. Book 5 then presents the spiritual return from exile which happens through a Davidic Messiah.Working and wrestling with the Psalms and the overall flow and structure will bring much fruit to both Old and New Testament studies and I am thankful for such a volume from O. Palmer Robertson and look forward to its impact on future writings.**I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. A positive impact on the studies of the book of Psalms for decades to come By SLIMJIM Before I read this book I didn’t know what to make of the way the Psalms were laid out which was largely due to my own personal difficulty in discerning the reason for the Psalms’ arrangement. This book convinced me that there is definitely a flow in the Psalter. It is packed with a lot of information, that even after I finished reading it I realized I probably have forgotten a lot more than I could remember. I think it is worth purchasing even as a reference which I plan to use in this manner in the future whenever I study or preach from the Psalms.According to the author the purpose of book 1-5 of the Psalms can be summarized as Confrontation, Communication, Devastation, Maturation and Consummation. The overarching theme of Book 1 of the Psalms is confrontation in which David confronts a multitude of enemies as he goes about trying to establish God’s kingdom. This struggle continues in book two but now with a new focus of communications with foreign nations that calls the nations to worship the true and living God. Book 3 describes devastation of both the Northern and Southern kingdom of Israel and pleas for God’s deliverance, while Book 4 we see the writers of the Psalms grow in their spiritual understanding of the destruction and exile followed by book 5 that considers Israel’s return to the promise land and beyond. As stated earlier, there was more information in this book that I have probably forgotten than I remembered. Here are some of the highlights of what I learned:- The book makes the fascinating observation of how Messianic and Torah Psalms are right next to one another. These are Psalms 1-2, 18-19,118-119. This coupling shows the importance of the Messiah and God's laws. Even in the Old Testament the Bible never teaches works’ righteousness but the fact that one finds a Messianic Psalm right next to the Torah Psalm is definitely an illustration of Law-Gospel.- Psalm 45:6 states the Messiah would be divine when the verse addresses “God” explicitly while giving Messianic motifs to describe Him. Amazing!- Hallelujah Psalms are not as frequent as one may think and they are often given as worship of God in climatic terms and strategically placed in book 4 and 5.- The book makes a fascinating observation of how the end of Revelation one sees four references to Hallelujah (Revelation 19:1, 2-3,4, 6) like how Hallelujah appears towards the end of the Psalter.- The book had a good discussion on why Psalm 110 is in book five even though most Davidic Psalm is mainly found in earlier collection of Psalms. The author argues quite persuasively that Psalm 110 is placed in Book 5 in order to give hope of a future messianic king and priest in the post exilic world that is the focus of book 5 in which Israel faced the reality that there is no Davidic king on the throne and the Temple not returning back to its former glory. This Psalm comforts God’s people that God has not abandoned them!- There is a good summary in the end with a lot of new information in the concluding chapter such as the pyramid grouping of Psalms, and the three little discussed themes of the book of Psalms. Readers should be aware that the concluding chapters is more than just a conclusion summarizing the whole book (though it is that). In summary, this is a wonderful book and I enjoyed reading it. I highly recommend it. I think the contribution of this work would have a positive impact on the studies of the book of Psalms for decades to come.NOTE: This book was provided to me free by P&R Publishing and Net Galley without any obligation for a positive review. All opinions offered above are mine unless otherwise stated or implied.
