Luke and Kate are both nonverbal and diagnosed with "classic" autism. They have always been in self-contained public school placements. This is not a miracle cure book, but neither is it a wistful regret for what might have been. Everyone's Autistic is an attempt to describe living year-to-year as an autistic family, as nonjudgmental encouragement for those who do, frank enlightenment for those who have no idea, and entertaining reading for both. Many of the current autism books focus on the early years and on the Asperger Syndrome/higher-functioning end of the spectrum. This story lays out the broader view of caring for a child and adult with autism-especially two at the lower-functioning end of the spectrum.

Winter Everyone’s Autistic is a poignantly honest and intriguing memoir that describes the reality of many parents living with children who have autism. Most of us, who are neurologically typical, may find it difficult to put into words what it would be like to raise two autistic children. Jeff Romanczuk, does an outstanding job at exploring his own experiences and emotions, sharing his vulnerabilities and shortcomings with the world, which is nothing short of heroic as his experiences will help many families in the struggle of raising children with disabilities of all sorts. Although the book documents the difficulties of his family’s life, it is wittingly intertwined with his effortless sense of humor that was always perfectly timed. I also appreciated the detail given to the reader about his marriage and how they partnered together to navigate the choppy waters of autism. I found this to be inspiring as many partners of children with disabilities do not have as fortunate of an outcome. As a social worker, this book was a valuable read as it helped broaden my knowledge of the daily battle families with “special needs” go through and how they are often judged by persons who have limited understanding. We are so often hounded with cultural competency but the area of disabilities (of any sort) is often brushed over as an afterthought to racial and economic differences. I will be recommending this book to colleagues and past professors as Dr. Romanczuk’s perspective is enlightening and worthy to teach social workers and civilians alike the sensitivity, compassion, and often, humor that is needed in working with or relating to such families.

This memoir, written by the parent of two autistic children, enables readers to vicariously experience the pathway traveled by its author. Readers share the deep feelings of anticipation, disbelief, bewilderment, resignation , sorrow and loss felt by the author and are sustained by the overwhelming sense of joy and faith that permeates the book. Everyone’s Autistic is a tribute to the strength and endurance of the human spirit. The book is recommended for all those interested in understanding more about the autistic child; however, its message is equally important for those concerned with the parents of exceptional children. The book will help many parents who feel the need for support and understanding as they travel a similar journey.

Poignant, tender memoir gives stays with you By Alison Buehler Such a poignant, tender memoir of a family who comes of age with not one child with autism, but two. This baffling condition defines their lives, but not in the ways you might expect. Heartfelt and brutally honest, this book keeps you cheering for the autistic family beyond the last page. While most of us think we could never survive such a trial, this author makes us reconsider. In the midst of an against most odds situation there is laughter, love, and hope.
