“Yo! Did you just see that?” Latoya cut in, her brown eyes wide. “See what?” Nakeeta glanced around strangely as she hooked a left on to Parsells. “It looked like somebody got laid out back there!” Latoya replied, almost sure of what she saw. “Girl, I didn’t see shit,” Nakeeta spat. She continued with a light chuckle followed by her monotone words. “Toya, ya just nervous about that murder you’re involved in. Try to keep things like that off ya mind, and you won’t be imaging wild things.” “No, Keeta! I’m telling you something happened back there. This ain’t about Rashawn getting killed either,” Latoya confirmed. Nakeeta had been friends with Latoya for years. They disagreed on a lot of things, but since Latoya had got caught in a tight spot, they seemed to argue a lot more lately. “So, are you gonna testify?” Nakeeta asked, hoping her best friend would say “no”. Latoya was her ace-boon, but she didn’t wanna be known for chilling with rats. “I don’t think I really have a choice legally. They subpoenaed me to court. They’re forcing me to go! I wish I never woulda’ got caught up in this B.S! I’m all fucked up now.” Nakeeta looked at her friend with concerned eyes as they parked in front of Latoya’s aunt’s house. She needed to know what happened that night. Maybe Latoya was ready to share. “So how did you get caught up?” she asked. “Well, do you remember Russell?” “The old-timer that you were coolin’ with all winter?” “Yeah, well see, he told me he could put a little money in my pocket by just doing something for him, but he never got around to telling me what it was. Next thing I know, I’m with Rashawn. We parked, chillin’ in front of my house, then this nigga Jabar comes up and start shootin’ right through the window and just blows this nigga head off!” “What! That’s crazy! Don’t Russell and Jabar pump together?” “Exactly! The crazy thing is after he commits the murder, he throws an envelope in my lap. The envelope has three stacks in it, and he tells me Russ said job well done.” “Damn, so they had beef with Rashawn obviously?” “Yeah, and that’s something I never knew,” Latoya revealed, feeling bad for her deceased man. If she had never been fucking with Russ on the side, she would have never been in the middle of this. “So how’d Jabar end up in jail?” “I identified him. I thought it’d be the right thing to do.” Nakeeta stayed silent, thinking over what her friend just had told her. She wanted to get her out of this ‘cause being a snitch wasn’t cool by a long shot. “Girl you need to pack up and get the fuck out of here!” “Then the cops gonna be looking for me.” “That’s better than getting killed,” Nakeeta replied with her eyes locked dead on her friend. Latoya thought about her friend’s words, and what she was saying made great sense. They both knew Russ’s and Jabar’s reputation; if they wanted you dead, best believe you were going to feel their wrath. Rashawn had fallen victim to a hit, thinking that he could take over blocks that belonged to Russ. It was a bold move that he paid for with his life. Now, Latoya carried all the weight of her man’s murder. At this point, Latoya had the power to give Jabar a life sentence or freedom; everything was in her hands. “Yeah, I really need to get the fuck out of the Roc!” Latoya announced, reality setting in. She continued with urgency, “But…but where am I gonna go?” “You got peoples out in Arizona, right?” “Yeah, but that’s where the cops is going to start first.” “Oh yeah, you’re right. Well, maybe you can just move somewhere down south. It wouldn’t be hard to start over.” “Are you serious Keeta? I only have about 500 dollars left from the cash that Russell gave me. How am I supposed to get money to relocate?” She asked herself more so than her friend. “Better get it somehow, Toya ‘cause time is tickin’, and I don’t wanna see anything happen to you, so whatever I can do, just let me know.”
