"I wear a locket filled with my grandmother's bones." So begins Avonelle's Gift. Can a descendant reach back into her family stories and recover relatives who have been lost, forgotten, rejected or excluded? What can she discover and retrieve as she breaks through negative judgements about her family's past? Avonelle's Gift vividly captures the history of a family spanning four generations, beginning with a love affair between two teenagers in 1900. A pregnant girl marries to save her family's good name at a time when childbirth and infancy were fraught with danger and mothers and babies could die. This story tells of two motherless children and how each affected the other. By blending available facts with both her historical research and her imagination, the author has filled in the missing pieces of a tale that deserves to be told. As she focuses on bringing out what is emotionally true, she expresses the depth and complexity she finds in her family over several generations. Avonelle's Gift tells of early deaths, lost loves, lost families, unbridled ambition, political corruption, social ostracism and redemption at a time when people could begin anew and rebuild their lives for the better. Like so many family stories with villains, victims and heroes, it tells of courage, determination and the capacity for human hearts to change.

In exchange, I was simply asked to write an honest review, and post it. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising]"With love and reverence I have sought out the where, when, who, why and how of my family soul. Each of us has one, and this is mine."So begins a family story based on its divisiveness. A drifter named Avonelle finds a kindred soul in a quiet loner and she becomes a mother forced into a marriage to save her reputation. However, when she dies in childbirth her husband abandons the child, who unwanted by any relatives, is forced to live, and work for, a small orphanage. She never knew her father until he found his way to her door just before his untimely death. This short visit gives the girl closure she didn't even know she needed.Ethel meets Virgil, himself abandoned by family, and after a convoluted war ravaged separation, they marry, and their story is the "soul" of this book. Through a rough and bumpy marriage, and equally public and private struggles, Virgil outlives Ethel and his second marriage and son Scott bring understanding and deepening awareness of the good, the bad and the changing expectations of his life in the present. His two older children do not know their sibling until he contacts his sister after their father has died. And that begins the hunt for the family story. This book's a bit scattered, and unbeliveable in its scope. On that, Scheller is to be complemented. However, this ARC has poorly repeated editing flaws which are quite annoying. I applaud her weaving the dicotomus strands together as will most of us who have tried to grasp our own family stories. Worth reading

It is a blend of facts that she gathered from family and various documents and fiction. Her saga starts with her great grandparents in the early 1900’s. She begins her chronicle with an explanation of how both her grandparents lost their mothers at an early age and how one ends up living in an orphanage and the other with relatives. She continues forward and explains the good and bad of their relationship and what life dealt them. She follows their lives up until her grandfather’s death in 1964.This was a very interesting novel. The author had a great mixture of fact and fiction that enabled the story to flow smoothly and read as a tale. She did not judge or apologize for choices that were made by her ancestors. Because the story was told without judgment, you were drawn into the story and it read more as a novel than a family history. I utterly enjoyed the book from beginning to end.I recommend this book if you are looking for a great story. Although a family history, the author weaves fact with a rare storytelling ability that makes this a page turner that you will not want to put down.

GIfts from our Ancestor's Are Priceless, Regardless of their Imperfections By Sandra In this interesting and tenderly written book, the author describes four generations of ancestors. These ancestors, like our own, were not perfect, yet she describes them frankly, guessing at their motivations and drives for their failures. The author thoughtfully respects her ancestors’ human frailties and faults, revering them for what they passed on to her. She creatively filled in the blanks about their personal thoughts, fleshing out a story that is interesting and informative as a historical fiction as well as exciting as a story. Although I feared this might prove to be another boring memoir, I am happy to say I was wrong!
